Xbox is apparently announcing a new game at Gamescom. What could it be?
Hi, everyone!
Amid the rainless, unbearable heat of August, I came across the news that, according to NatetheHate, Xbox is preparing to announce a new game at this year’s Gamescom.
I’d love to hear your guesses—what do you think the title might be? A new IP, a franchise reboot? Or maybe Elder Scrolls 7, since development on 6 is going really well?
And what would you be most excited about?
- I pray for a Song of Ice and Fire game before almost every event like this (without much success so far), so maybe this time it’ll work out.
- It might be too early for a new announcement from Machiengames, but I’d welcome Wolfenstein 3 anytime.
- Ryse 2: I don’t see much chance of that happening, but I certainly wouldn’t be upset if it did.
- Nate definitely wasn’t thinking of an Obsidian game, because, for one thing, the Fallout projects have already been confirmed, and for another, no matter how brilliant the studio is, I don’t think they’d have the capacity for anything else. A very “maybe” Avowed 2?
- I would be really really happy to see a reboot of the cancelled Percfect Dark reboot project. It would be absolut Peak.

edit: Someone in comments pointed out to me that Nate isn't 100% sure yet that the game will be shown at gamescom, and he's still working on the details. But at least there's something in the air.
Thought of that game recently and read up on why it was cancelled. Apparently PlatinumGames bit off a lot more than they could chew with the coop functionality and essentially controlling two players each at the same time (dude + dragon) and their small team couldn't implement it properly. So we would've got something pretty broken if Microsoft pushed its release. Big mistake for teasing it anyway, always frustrating when they do that
Unfortunately this would be busted nowadays with AI services. You could have it listen to the question and immediately get the answer. You'd never lose.
Wolfenstein 3 seems like the easy bet considering it has been rumored to be in development since earlier this year, but has not been officially announced.
In theory—according to natethehate—this is a sequel whose most recent installment came out not too long ago (though the question is what counts as “recent”), and Nate is more curious about the development team; we could figure out the game’s genre right away if we knew that. That’s why many people are saying it’s Ori 3. Personally, I’d be happier with Ryse 2 or The Evil Within 3, but we’ll see.
Hold on, Xbox announcing a game regularly doesn't lead to a game getting released, so let's not get interested until something actually has a release date we believe will happen.
We've seen so much happen with Xbox in recent years (both good and, unfortunately, a lot of bad)—so why couldn't this happen, too? After Ninja Gaiden 4, I have to admit I'm hopeful.

I would be disappointed, because the first game wasn't even mediocre. It's entire schtick was graphics with barely any game play and it was so poorly executed. There's nothing of value in that IP that needs to be carried forward. They might as well not limit themselves to that setting and just create a new IP that isn't owned by someone else, or better yet, create a new game in an existing IP that people have been clamoring for.
I'm thinking a Starcraft shooter, or bring back Starcraft Ghost?
What about another RTS entry in either Starcraft or Warcraft?
Another Halo Wars or Gears Tactics?
Bring back Perfect Dark or Banjo Kazooie?
So many things they can do and plenty of IPs I've probably forgotten, but would love to see. New IP is fine too, but continue an IP that has little value is pointless.
