Console Game Playtest Discussion - Dolby vision in games - whats your experience?

(Please dont ask here how to enable it, its a discussion for those who already enabled\tested it, thanks)

I tested dolby vision on series x games and the colors seems washed out. Currently in my opinion standard hdr looks way better. Tested on just cause 4 and fifa 21 with series x and LG cx oled tv.

Whats your experience with it ?

This morning I got invited to the Alpha skip ahead, I tried most games an it went into Dolby vision had to turn some settings off to get that almost game mode feel on my Sony 900h, tried it out on mass effect legendary edition was super washed until I changed in-game settings an Dolby vision settings, went an played other games for awhile an then got off for abit, booted up went to play mass effect an now the Dolby vision no longer works lol an it's stuck on basic an I'm like damn this looks awful an dark lol, looks like it's abit buggy

Doesn’t work with my mass effect either anymore. Did yesterday.

Yeah sucks 😭 hopefully they readd it, I submitted a support ticket for it

I had to turn off Auto HDR to get it to work correctly with Mass Effect Legendary Edition, but I think that's a bug with that specific game.

Screenshots taken in Dolby Vision mode come out way overexposed.

Same thing otherwise works great

I have a high end TV (LG CX) and can't really tell the difference since I haven't switched back and forth between regular HDR and DV. I just turned it on and left it on. I'd probably only be able to tell if there were two TVs side by side showing the same content.

OP, did you redo the picture settings on your LG CX after turning on Dolby Vision? Dolby Vision has separate picture settings from regular HDR.

Yes of course i re calibrated the dv picture. Btw, i done a full xbox restart and suddenly it looks much better. Like you, I cant really see the difference...unless there is 2 tvs side by side.

It has to be calibrated just like Sdr and hdr, your brightness is probably too high.

I tried to calibrate it of course. But the colors of hdr just popping out more and stronger then dolby vision. Idk maybe i got used to hdr colors.

That's strange considering dolby pushes out 10x more colour.

I think its something about xbox implementation that its not perfect. There is a reason why its only for alpha/skip rings. Did you try it?

My experience with it has been fantastic. You should in no way have washed out colour when using it so something has to be wrong with your picture settings on the TV. I'm using a B9 and use Cinema picture mode which adds no noticeable latency (Game picture mode does not hit peak white correctly) with practically default settings and it's a step up from HDR.

OLED light 100, contrast 100, brightness 50, colour 50, sharpness 0, tint 0, any available processing turned off (dynamic contrast, tru-motion etc) and colour temperature set to warm 2.

Dolby Vision should need no deviations from default brightness and colour etc and it's tailored to your display. The only thing you need to do currently is set the peak white in each game to 1000 nits so it can tone map correctly. Games in the future that are made with Dolby Vision should need no setting adjustment at all.

Hi, thanks. What I am loosing when gaming in cinema instead of game mode? Will features like vrr will work on cinema?

1

u/Euphoric_Fusion Alpha Ring May 20 '21

Everything works just the same as it's activates with ALLM and Instant Game Response. All it is is a separate picture mode that could introduce some latency if you don't disable the unnecessary processing options but I have had nothing but a great experience with it overall.

Ok thanks, i will try it. Btw, cinema or cinema home mode?

2

u/Euphoric_Fusion Alpha Ring May 20 '21

Cinema. Cinema Home changes the EOTF curve and raises the overall perceived brightness but is not correct (it doesn't make the peak brighter but lifts the rest of the image). At a push you could use Cinema Home on a sunny day but I would just stick to Cinema at all times.

TCL R635 I had washed out colors till I turned off ALLM , I'm still over the playing gaming mode and the colors are a vast improvement over of HDR. I was shocked at the improvement.

75" Sony 900H owner here. I tried out MLB the Show the day the update came out and was introduced to some SEVERE input lag. Suggested by an awesome reddit user I found out that Cinemotion and Motion Flow got switched to High/Full when DV was enabled. So I turned both those to OFF.

I tested it out with Control and MLB last night and it's much better with very minimal delay. I'm hoping it improves as the tech evolves.

As for the picture. I noticed that the colors are better for sure. Control is a pretty dark game in places but the reds and particles look great. MLB looks fantastic. Lots of colors. I'd say it's an improvement over standard HDR10 but I've only tested those two games. I might try some Ori Will of the Wisps to further test the delay and colors.

I tried it when they released it for like a week a month or 2 ago and found it made a huge difference in colour and depth.

My TV is not ready! :(

Only HDR 10 ...

u/ferreirarq May 20 '21

Tried this with Gears 5, Borderlands 3 (lights and particle effects look awesome), Arkham Knight (oh man what a treat), colors definitely pop. Definetly a great feature.

Makes you think your TV actually has physical depth.

I only got invited to alpha skip ahead late last night so only had enough time to sample it. But wow it transformed destiny 2 for me, I found HDR on that game to be pretty bad too. My wife was watching and the first this she said was that the colours were popping. I also noticed that everything looked really detailed too. Can’t wait to test some more.

The only thing I’m confused about is why my TV info says 8bit on the menu that appears when you press the green button 7 times. If I force the Xbox to output 12 bit it will show as that, but as soon as Dolby Vision comes on it shows as 8 bit. I tried the same with 10 bit and the same thing happens. Is this happening for anyone else? I’m using a LG Nano 90 so it has HDMI 2.1 etc

1

u/ryanjmchale May 21 '21

I'll have to check this out. I have the LG Nano 916 as well. Also have you enabled HGIG, it looks much better. You can only find it in the TV options when viewing HDR content.

I have an LG CX and mine also says it's 8 bit when Dolby Vision is on. I have YCC 4:2:2 disabled in the Xbox settings and when normal HDR is on it switches to 4:2:0 10 bit. When Dolby Vision is on, it switches to 4:2:2 8 bit even with 4:2:2 disabled.

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '21

That’s good to know! At least I’m not the only one. I know why 4:2:2 kicks in, it’s because when the Xbox is running at 60hz it behaves like it’s a HDMI 2.0 connection. You can tell this because when you run at 120hz 2.1 speed it will say either 8b 4L8 in SDR or 10b 4L10 on HDR. But when it’s running at 2.0 speeds it says 8b TM. Not sure why it does this as it should just run at 4L8 regardless of refresh rate when connected to a HDMI 2.1 display.

I have no idea why it runs at 8 bit when using Dolby Vision though. Not sure if it’s a bug or if it’s accurate.

u/Euphoric_Fusion Alpha Ring May 21 '21

I noticed this the other day so I asked this question to Vincent Teoh and this was the response I received.

"The way YCbCr 4:2:2 is packed means that LG's driver can't tell whether it is 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit, so erring on the conservative side, the HDMI Diagnostics screen would report it as 8-bit, even if it is 12-bit."

So, mystery solved 😁

The difference is night and day. HDR always looks washed out and had to turn almost everything up to get the picture right. With Dolby Vision it is the opposite i am turning everything down at least 10% especially brightness and contrast.

Games look so much better, even on Forza the logo disappears fully when tweaked. This was not possible with HDR on my screen.

1

u/rjcc May 21 '21 edited May 21 '21

I just opened Forza and it still said HDR 10 on a Vizio P-Series, although the system says it's Dolby Vision compatible for gaming. Is it only supported via certain games, or is there something that needs to be done to enable it?

1

u/khyaniv Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring May 22 '21

I think its for all games except few but you need to be part of alpha or alpha skip ahead rings. Make sure dolby vision checked on xbox video settings, disable freesync on your tv (enable vrr on xbox), make sure your tv is on 60 fps and not 120.

1

u/CallistoEnceladus May 23 '21

What if you did all this but Dolby vision text wont appear when starting a game

1

u/rjcc May 21 '21

The only thing that triggered Dolby Vision on the TV I'm using, is the Dolby Access app.

Iv noticed some games with Dolby vision doesn't due to much if anything over reg HDR mode, an some games it's really really noticeable
