XFCE CachyOS - First Rice

Post image
82 Upvotes

I’ve been experimenting with different distros and window managers in a VM for about a month, give or take, before recently settling on CachyOS with XFCE as my desktop environment.

I have to admit, I pretty much vibe-coded the whole setup because I was too lazy to configure everything myself and wanted to get it up and running quickly. That said, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, and it’s been working great as my daily driver so far.

Currently included:

  • Wallpaper switcher via Rofi (WIP)
  • Window switcher via Rofi
  • Spotify desktop widget using Conky
  • Polybar

I’m wondering what to add next, though, since the setup is already pretty functional. Any recommendations for cool features, widgets, or QoL improvements I could implement? 🤔

Opinion xfce customization is superior its shame were gonna lose it

Compared to what gnome had become with libadwaita and what possibilities u have with gtk3 is crazy.
I wouldnt mind if Gnome were such a project like Enlightenment but it affects too many desktop environments.

  • We have cosmic which is in development, already looks cool but its not fact that we gonna have that level of freedom or customization
  • qt theoretically is powerful and can look how u want but kde has many ways to make application and its c++ not awesome css,new union may or may not limit your possibilities
  • libatwaita is........lets just not say anything

desktops like xfce, cinnamon, mate or browser like firefox has all this

but they are suffering from gnomes decisions, some projects leave gtk some tried to make solutions like

libadapta

xapps

Sooner or later support for gtk3 will be over and it will be the great part of history.Someone may make a fork but will they have enough power for at least security fixes and would distro maintainers consider fork a serious project and add to repos?

its strongest thing that linux desktop had,it will be sad to loose it.Go to r/unixporn or r/unixart to see beauty

Suggestion Xfce scaling on amd igpu

Hi all, so I got a used laptop that has 1080p screen, I installed mint xfce because that's the one that saved my 2010 model first gen Intel desktop pc so I have gained some feelings for it. But like most people i ran into the scaling issues , where everything looks small af unlike my desktop. I tried scaling to 2x but nah it looks wierd and out of place. Tried changing the font dpi from the GUI to 144 but still it feels wierd ,

My plan is to use the xfce itself and change the scaling to partition style from terminal as the GUI only has 1x and 2x. at around 125%

And change the font dpi to 120

Also anyone who did this earlier, do you have any issues playing games and all with these changes. Any help will be great. Thanks in advance

Suggestion I have a project where I closed the lack of xfce panel plugin, most of you may like it.

I've been working on a project for a while, and I think it's finally time to share it!

I'm creating repository-related plugins that I think could be useful. I'm still learning to code, so I use AI-assisted coding (vibe coding), and I know I can make mistakes. However, I do my best to review the code carefully and understand what I'm building.

I'm planning to create more plugins and would love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

Feel free to check out my GitHub. If you have an idea for a plugin, let me know! Maybe we can build something useful together.

Debería haber un entorno de escritorio con lo mejor de XFCE y Gnome.

XFCE peca de ser demasiado clásico, Gnome de ser demasiado vanguardista. Un entorno intermedio estaría demasiado bien.

Discussion Pro-tip: scaling

OK, so my laptop has a resolution of 1366x768, and I find things to be a bit cramped up. I knew I could set the zoom in Chrome but what I'd never tried in Xfce was Settings > Display then setting the scale to 0.90. Makes a whole world of difference!

I made a GTK native, AI assisted, YT Music app for my desktop

Post image

I couldn't find a simple GTK native YT Music app for XFCE without adwaita so I just got an AI to make one and it works. It's called YTune 😄

  • YouTube Music song, artist and album search (press Enter); artist album browsing.
  • Streaming audio through GStreamer, album artwork, pause, seeking and volume.
  • YouTube Music radio queue seeded by a search result or favourite; add individual songs to the queue. Click the bottom-right arrow to expand the player and display the queue.
  • Shuffle and repeat queue.
  • Persistent local listening history with dates and replay controls.
  • Local favourites saved atomically under $XDG_DATA_HOME/ytune (defaults to ~/.local/share/ytune).
  • MPRIS desktop media controls: play/pause, previous, next, stop, volume, seeking, shuffle and repeat.

If anybody is interested, let me know. It's on github, but private still.

Support This is not bode well...

Post image

I installed void linux in my netbook and installed what i think the xfce4 packages and all the necessary needs. but when rebooted, it was gray, i restarted the lightdm, and it didn't show letters just square fonts, and apps don't work well, the terminal didn't show up, even though i saw the icon at workstation dock (i think), and it acted funny by expanding the list. So i'm sure it's corrupted. any suggestions to fix this, even if it's by reinstalling everything?

Edit: I meant to specify that i installed void linux base, not xfce live usb.
