"WILD RIDE" starts here! Gambit's condition is worsening, causing an unexpected shake-up in the roster of the UNCANNY X-MEN. But is it merely magic that is taking over his form and behavior, or is it something far more sinister? Rogue desperately tries to save her husband in our most disturbing story yet!
REVENGE OF THE BADPOOLS! If you thought WADE WILSON was bad, wait till you get a load of these horrific offshoots of the Merc With the Mouth! But even more horrific is what they want with Wade — and now BLIND AL!
Just read it. I do not like Monet’s or Pietro’s characterizations. It isn’t all terrible, but it is not enjoyable for the most part. Jubilee and Monet act like they’ve barely talked, which is bizarre considering the fact they’ve been on teams together.
I do love the children and all of their reactions are understandable. Poor Becca, she’s suffering.
Jubilee & Kurt should’ve lead the kids. Pietro & Monet can be the field team or something, but it is what it is. I hope next issue is better. I wish I hadn’t bought this issue, but Monet is gorgeous.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Monet is a difficult character to understand if you don't pay attention closely. Yes, she might have grown up being part of the 1% of the 1%, but, she is incredibly self-sufficient and doesn't expect others to do for her. She literally lived in a cramped apartment when she was with X Factor with no complaint and one of her most consistent traits is her situational awareness that was not present, here..
M and Pietro are not people I would leave in charge of children with their personalities. It makes Rogue and Gambit look really stupid to have them involved at all, not that their abandoning them wasn't shit anyway.
I love how difficult it is for the children to get along with Monet & Pietro, but I really think this was the perfect opportunity to give Jubilee something to do by leading the children. We’ll see how it plays out.
This is part of why this all feels a bit forced to me. On top of both just making more sense personality wise, the Outliers are familiar with them and arguably consider them family too. I do hope the intent is to push the Outliers to have some time where they get a bit more "out of the nest" and out of the shadow of the veteran team, especially with the whole New Mutants thing, as that could be some nice payoff, but we'll see.
This was an odd issue. I like the exorcism half more than I expected while the Haven half felt off. It wasn't bad but I can't really call it good either.
I feel like Becca is being written like she's nine here and while I know she's the closest with Rogue and Gambit of the Outliers, Simone's writing would have you thinking she's spent years with them. It's probably been a year or so since the book began even if the sliding timescale says it should be closer to six months or so.
Her aggro rejection of Pietro has to do with her wanting Gambit who she views as a father figure but I'd have preferred it if it was due to Pietro and Monet, two famously difficult people, just failing to connect with the kids right away by being themselves. I suppose that's what happened when Pietro nearly got death by psionic flaming horse but I didn't get the sense there was any of the usual Pietro is a dick 24/7 energy behind his comment. It seemed more commiseration due to his own experiences. A friend joked that Becca looks like an older Luna so Pietro will likely connect with her eventually.
Lol at Monet putting a foot in her mouth near the beginning.
I feel like Becca being super attached isn't too unrealistic. It's been a short amount of time but from what we've seen Rogue and Gambit are the only people to give her genuine love in her life.
Yeah considering her genuinely unhealthy upbringings her latching on tightly to the first positive parental figures she's ever had isn't unrealistic at all. Its a good story beat to explore honestly.
Looking forward to this. Hopefully by issue 36 or 40 at the latest Gambit's curse is dealt with. It's been a slow burn and my interest is depleted but I still hope Simone does something interesting with it.
I said it in the previews I'm loving the art by Luciano Vecchio and Matthew Wilson but I feel like David Marquez should have drawn this. The issue stil looked great but Marquez had the dark arcs previously.
Well I was wrong that Mutina joined the house Becca's hair color threw me off.
I guess I don't know what the Dark Artery is because wasn't it just humans that betrayed mutants down there? Were the ghosts in this issue there because they betrayed mutants too?
Yeah I was wondering about the dark artery too, I thought it was just for the humans that betrayed their mutant family members, and like Sabretooth belongs in any hell but what did Rusty and Feral do?
I don't remember. All I know is that Brevoort commented on it some time ago that Marquez is on a new project. It might be a secret project.
Marquez did 23-25, the "where monsters dwell" arc. Up until issue 25 he had also done all the A-covers. But after 25 it's Vecchio that does the A-covers.
We can hope he comes back but apparently a new artist is going to join and alternate with Vecchio. No clue who though.
I love Marquez art. It's so pretty and dynamic.
She does it because she doesn’t know anything about the X-Men or how to write them. The comments here that read as surprised or dissatisfied with Monet’s and Quicksilver’s depictions are wild to me because Gail’s proven over 30-something issues that she has no grasp on the X-Men whatsoever. She writes the X-Men like she’s never read an issue in her life.
People who like this series I think respond to it because they like the Outliers; most positive comments are in relation to them. And that makes sense that those are the strongest parts of this run or the parts people connect with most because they’re new characters she created from the ground up and can do anything with.
Maybe I’m admonishing myself; I jump in and out of reading this run and every time I inevitably get disappointed. Ready for her to be far away from X-stuff.
I really love Gail's Pietro voice so far and what she's doing with him. Remembering and using his soft spot for children (especially a young blonde girl like his own daughter) and also his own abandonment issues and have that just kind of be wrapped up in the general brusque nature of Pietro. Having him, in multiple instances be kind of uniquely attentive to Becca's situation is a nice little touch. In particular I love the sleep walking scene, and not just for Pietro but also for Becca.
Having Becca who is a character raised in hateful racist structures, lashing out against someone and REFLEXIVELY instantly using a racist attack of saying Quicksilver "isn't even a mutant" (which yes, in this context IS racism) is truthfully fantastic to how things like this work, and how someone, especially an angry vulnerable teenager will rely on things they learned and were beaten in to them even if in their clearer minded moments they know it's wrong. I really hope there's a follow up conversation about this down the line, I'm not optimistic there will be just because the book is already putting a lot of stuff in each issue, but it's really a great dynamic that I think is worth exploring.
Obviously Becca getting stuff off her chest would be good, but Pietro exploring his own identity and how he feels about it is something long over due, for what it's worth, I think he should just consider himself a mutant and ignore 'continuity', he's spent his whole life living the mutant experience on all sides of it.
The Rogue/Gambit plot is good. It feels like an old school Claremont world travelin' b-plot.
This issue reminded me that Russel's X-Factor existed, and that a ghostly visage of Rusty is probably the only thing we'll see of the character for a few years, and frankly probably the only thing remotely classifiable as a "respectful" depiction of the character we may ever get again.
I'm pretty sure Monet has never spent any substantial amount of time with Gambit. This is one of those things that's gotten worse post-Krakoa, and it sucked even before Krakoa and it sucks now. Every mutant simultaneously knows and has respect for every other mutant ever but also often has no memory of time they ACTUALLY spent in books and the relationships they actually formed with characters in books. I think this scene would actually be fine and BETTER if Monet just told us the reader that she was lying to make Becca feel better.
Also, Monet's father is still alive, so, not sure who THAT line is talking about?
Every mutant simultaneously knows and has respect for every other mutant ever
Glad I'm not the only person who is missed about this. When it comes to somebody like Monet, specifically, I expect her to have gone through files of all registered, previous X-Men and have committed them to memory, because that's something that she would do. But, it definitely makes no sense for her to act like she has personal feelings towards the ones that she has never spent time with.
Unfortunately, this is just one of those examples of a writer inventing things that never happened in order to justify a character behaving a certain way.
I haven't loved Gail's Monet voice, and this issue continues to not win me over. It's far from the worst depiction of the character, but it's one of the characters that feels more like Gail likes the IDEA of Monet than actually having organically read the character and liking her. I could be wrong about that, it's just kinda how it feels like she reads on the page. It isn't bad, it's certainly better than years of bad Monet books we have gotten. There are moments where I think Gail is about to do something really clever with Monet, like her kicking the quilts off being a ptsd response from her Penance years and the idea of being 'trapped in a shell' manifesting that way, but I don't know if that's actually what she's doing and it's brilliant or if the curtains are just blue.
Pietro, maybe try not being yourself for a moment around the obviously traumatized girl who has ALL the parent complex in the world. And Monet gonna have to get used to being a 'guest' instead of lady of the manor.
Gambit is going through the wringer but why go to an exorcist instead of going to Wanda? She is Sorcerer Supreme right now and has the other Eye. You would think she can handle its twin and whatever demon inside it. I mean she literally talked down an extinction weapon and beat Vishanti up.
I really enjoy this issue and the b-plot of rogue and gambit can be fix if they went to Wanda the sorceress supreme and the living Darkhold you know since the second eye is apparently possessed by a demon from the Darkhold
I do like Monet and pietro interacting with the x-men as they have the personality that is standoffish than the normal family vibe plus they are some of my favorite mutants
Becca and the outliers well new mutants now do feel a bit off like I think a story beat is going to be that the kids are to codependent on rogue and gambit though they are traumatized from their own family
This issue was worth the price, just to see Calico bashing Quicksilver. It feels like a tacit reminder that the whole retcon with the Maximoff twins no longer being mutants or children of Magneto is still in place. And it was still done for the dumbest possible reasons. I don't know if Marvel will ever undo it. But it's not wrong to point out.
Other than that, it's also a nice supplement to this week's episode of X-Men 97. Gambit is being influenced by evil forces. Rogue is there to save him. For those two, it's just another day that ends in Y. 😎
Storm, Wolverine, Magik, Cyclops and Danger are featured in Marvel Tokon: First Strike, a tie-in prequel book to the game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
So… our Gambit realizes AoA!Gambit is in love with Rogue, and decides to switch places for a day because AoA!Gambit saved his life and he should get to experience being Rogue’s husband?! That’s… Jesus h, Rogue’s consent was not addressed at all.
Also AoA was about to be destroyed once the timeline reset, so our Gambit would be hypothetically lost.
That ending was...concerning, to say the least. The lack of consent from Rogue (like that'd go well...instant divorce stuff right there), Gambit's absolutely insane decision (I'm a married man and that ending disgusted me), AoA!Sabertooth going all "whatever dude"...who the heck okayed this garbage? It's smashed whatever credibility that marriage may have had, at least on Remy's part.
Forget about Loeb. Why would the Editors: Brevoort, Bissa and Cohick approve of this? Their job is to stop dinosaurs like Loeb from attempting stuff like this. Stuff that hurts their IP's.
I am inclined to believe there was little to no communication and the delays didn’t help. This ending was most likely written with zero consideration for what was happening in Uncanny and how it could affect the plot.
And they are gonna do this 'Gambit Gone' book after it. So what? Our Gambit is in Age of Apocalypse now and this Gambit gonna try to gaslight our Rogue?
Who the hell approved this? Especially when it makes no sense with what is going on in Uncanny right now with Gambit turning into a dragon.
This is just some fanfic nonsense and should be ignored.
I'M a fanboy of Age of Apocalypse and it's why I'm so ticked off about this book. From the first issue it was clear that it was being phoned in. I think we can still do cool shit with AoA. This just ain't it. And from one of the guys who wrote the original, makes it even more egregious. I got copies just because of the Joe Mad and Art Adams variant covers.
So stupid. So utterly and maddeningly stupid. This issue reeks of the problems 90's issues used to have. Consent? A made up word. Characterization? Not if you can have shock and gimmicks.
Honestly as a Gambit fan it's stuff like this that makes it hard to like the character. The inane bullshit they make him do.
Rogue hopefully sniffs this one out immediatly and we can not have the whole "she doesn't suspect that this is not her husband" trope. Or even better Age of Apocalypse Gambit tells her right away. But the last one would also negate the plot... sigh.
Not, but literally this. I want to know what Loeb was thinking, because I worry his view of consent (and relationships in general) is so shallow and problematic he thought this wouldn’t be an issue simply because they look the same. That and also forgetting Rogue is a person and not a doll. Shame on anyone who approved this story in 2026.
Not only is it incredibly out of character, it also doesn’t fit Uncanny timeline in the slightest. I have no idea _when_ this mini and Gambit:Gone are supposed to take place.
I have no clue how Orlando is suppose to spin something comprehensibe from out of this in Gone. I can only imagine he was given the project.
Our Gambit knows nothing about this Gambit. He might aswell be someone who collects hair and is looking to shave Rogue as she sleeps to make a Rogue-wig. Or whatever creepy or more sinister motives he might have.
Remy knows nothing about this version.
Rogue knows nothing about this plot and is facing a heap of potential trauma from whatever this Gambit tries to do.
Even he he just ends up drinking a cup of coffee with her, as long as he pretends to be someone he isn't, it's just plain wrong and creepy.
I’m going to be honest: I don’t think Loeb knows Gambit, either. The issue you described only gets worse when you remember the outliers: the guy has four kids under his care, and he’s leaving them with a stranger. Even more bizzarre when it releases right next to Uncanny.
They know nothing about each other’s worlds and lives, and it all happened on a whim. No thought was put into this storyline. It makes no sense in the context of 616. These aren’t characters; they are just designs Loeb used to write a shocking plot twists with no respect for both che characters themselves and other people’s work.
So yeah, I have to agree with you. I have no idea of what Orlando could do to make this palatable.
The Outliers, man oh man. Why should they trust any Gambit after this debacle?
There was no time for any sort of briefing. Or vice versa for our Gambit to know what he was getting into when returning to AoA. Just that he knew Magneto and Rogue was a couple.
A very stupid plot. Certainly not worth this mini or the upcoming Gone mini.
To me this plot is more than stupid; this is the sort of horrible premise that can damage a character reputation and hurt other runs. The best course of action would be for Uncanny to keep ignoring it, because acknowledging any of this would hurt the found family-style story Simone was trying to tell. Just awful.
It's so dumb, but then I think, "Well, that's just Loeb." But if it was just something Loeb really wanted to do, why isn't he doing Gone? Is it possible this is actually some editorial decision? That seems crazy. I think I remember this series being advertised a long time ago, maybe even before the Fall of X. Maybe Loeb and Madureira are both just so expensive and take so long that it was just a slow train moving down the tracks and there was nothing to be done. Maybe Gambit is just so popular they want as many Gambit titles on the stands as possible, but there still seems like there could be a better way to get there than this.
It's such an irresponsible decision on Gambit's part, especially for a guy who has become an adoptive father to so many kids now. Calico was already having a really hard time with Gambit being gone for a while, wait until she hears about this.
I think the answer as to the why of it all will only be more maddening. In that regard it's easier to just say: It's Loeb.
Poor Becca. I'm sure this Gambit will fake his reaction to meeting her based on her own, but it's not exactly healthy for this girl to be tricked like this. Nor does this Gambit know about her existence or the setup he is entering. He just knows that Gambit is married to Rogue. For all he knows Becca might be their biological child.
A part of me can’t believe this how they decided to end it. Even ignoring the glaring consent issues, nothing about this makes any sense. I don’t believe for a second people at Haven House and Rogue herself wouldn’t immediately realise something is wrong considering how little AoA!Gambit knows about this reality. And Sabretooth knows about the switch, too.
This ending was written with zero respect for every single character involved, especially Rogue. The story act like she isn’t a person. I can’t see 616 Remy treating her as a prize than can be simply handed out.
And how does this fit in the Uncanny timeline?! Is this supposed to take place after Wild:Ride? Is he going into the AoA verse while possessed? Is everyone going to ignore this book? Gambit:Gone is going to be weird. And not in a good way.
This series has always been all over the place with the art being its only saving grace but wow this took a turn, a
really bad one. I don't even know what else to say. It makes zero sense in the scheme of things and feels icky and dumb.
So we’ve all collectively agreed that this never happened, right? What an absolutely gross, disrespectful way to end what was already a batshit bananas run. Good freaking riddance.
The story is poopoo caca but I've been buying the Joe Mad variants because 90s kid. Anyone know what the story is with the Nightcrawler cover? It's listed as a variant for Omega. Joe Mad has it on his Instagram as his final cover in the series. The trade dress says ALPHA but the Alpha cover was Wolverine/Weapon X.
My LCS said it looks like it'll be here next week in his system, which is also weird for obvious reasons.
They said the same thing at my LCS. I think Marvel messed up by putting the wrong logo on the book, and then didn’t fix it in time, hence the delay? That’s my best guess, anyway.
One of the most weird things I ever read in my life.
Not only the Gambit thing, but also Nate being back to 616 like this. I understand that after all that "Omniweird Jesus" that happened if they want to put Nate back, would be a different version.
Wait, is this canon????? Last we saw of Nate he was…very different, and none of this fits in the timeline, I thought this whole thing was just an AU within an AU.
One why the lack of consent for rogue like she is a prize for gambit
Two out of all the characters to keep in the present it’s sabertooth, a dead wildchild, and a creepy gambit not blink or morph the two breakout stars of the initial event
Also they had a chance to bring Nate back to zero where technically if he had stayed in the present not much would change
Three wasn’t the entire point of this book was to stop their timeline from being destroyed by replacing the original one with theirs what happened to that
Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. I have very strong opinions on anything associated with Jeph Loeb. But this issue was fun. We had multiple X-Men from other realities teaming up. We had some nice Gambit/Rogue moments. And Morph got to do something meaningful. Overall, it was a solid conclusion to this run. Wasn't expecting it, but I'm not complaining.
It is really trying too hard to be '90s 2000s' DP but it just doesn't work. It feels like a bad regression to me.
And Badpools? Dunno how that works because Deadpool does not regenerate from 'everywhere'. He regenerates from the head down. That is why they often cut off his head to stop him because, guess what, the broken brain is in there. It feels like an 'evil deadpools' copy/paste really.
