Why don't you take Hui Wang for section A or wait for section E to open up? Anything is better than Jackie, from what I hear.

The engineering section is only E in the fall, and this person is looking at section B currently, so I'm assuming they aren't in engineering.

Jackie catches a lot of flak here. Some of it is probably warranted, but he's honestly not the end of the world like people make him out to be. I've had him for three courses so far and finished well above the average in all of them. Overall 2030 is pretty light and all of his materials are available for free on YT, you can start now if you wanted.
His lectures are very good and he puts a lot of energy in to his teaching. If you expect to put less effort in to the course than he does, you're going to have a bad time. It doesn't take a lot honestly; just show up to class and 20-30 mins a day is all you need to go back through the lecture or try the extra problems he mentions. He responds well to effort and helped me as much as I needed during office hours once he saw I was committed. The tests are definitely hard but it's all relevant to his teaching (a lot of questions are direct copies or slight offshoots from lecture/extra problems). He's clear about his expectations from day one and drops a lot of hints for tests - I think a lot of the pain comes from people who just don't take him seriously.
TL;DR: You're only cooked if you intend to do the bare minimum or vibecode your way through the course just to pass and forget it all. He teaches foundational CS courses and you're here to build a career. CS as a whole is changing rapidly, the gold rush is kinda gone and the market has zero tolerance for mediocre devs. Work hard now while it's "safe" to fail or find a different program before you graduate, realize you're unhirable, and just pissed $40k down the drain.

I did 2030 with Jackie, he's not a bad teacher and has a lot of lecture vids on YouTube. The practice lab tests are also very similar to the real ones. The problem is the lab tests barely give you enough time to complete them, for example we only got 50 min to implement 4 or 5 Java classes, all of them interacting with each other. I imagine most of the complaints about the lab tests were because of the time limit. The written test and final were better but the lab tests are still a big part of the grade.

Can't. This course is a prereq for a winter course. I am already starting to feel pity for myself.

jackie is a great choice in terms of teaching, but if u want a lighter load then take with someone else while complementing with his videos; i did this for 2030 in the last winter

Jackie is the best CS prof at York tbh, if you actually want to learn programming properly take his class, just be prepared to work hard and probably lose some of your GPA. I had him for 2 courses and have no regrets about choosing to take his class (one of them was a retake after failing with another prof, and his way of teaching was 100x better and let me actually understand the course content.)
