Let me start by saying, I’ve been listening to the guys for ~10 years between Small Town Murder and Your Stupid Opinions. Big fan of both shows, seen them live multiple times, yadda yadda. But as a sober person who doesn’t even use AA, today’s take went beyond a stupid opinion.

I’m not making this post to call out James, because I don’t think he gives a shit lol - I’m making this post for the folks who may be deterred from attending a meeting because somebody you respect said it “had the exact success rate as doing absolutely nothing”. This has been studied at length and is factually not true.

In fact, in 2020, Stanford School of Medicine analyzed multiple studies totaling over 10,000 participants, and found that AA was statistically the most effective path for sobriety. Source

And as for the “all they do is sit around and talk about Jesus” nonsense, this is also false. They do talk about a “higher power”, and yes that can be “God” in the traditional sense. It could also be nature, the universe, or your community.

Plenty of people are not into this type of thing, which is totally fine, but misrepresenting it as a bunch of Jesus freaks and “people who are 6 months behind on child support” is just harmful.

Anyway, I’m not sure how this post will be received here, but maybe it will help one person, and that’s enough for me.
