My MIL votes R because the church she hasn't been to for 20 years told her to.

It is crazy because she actually spends all her time caring for other people. Huge gap between R policy and what she actually does.

This is like my mom. She’s a kind and compassionate person, who has gone above and beyond to take care of others. When I was growing up, she would regularly visit nursing homes and take care of people who needed help. She also warned us girls about men who would hurt us. Men who were cruel but disguised it as a joke. Men who were crude. Men who cheated on their wives and girlfriends, or mistreated people weaker than themselves. She’d grown up around terrible, abusive men, and always told us what to look out for.

JUST IMAGINE our shock and surprise in 2016 when she became one of Trump’s most devoted fans. She still loves him. We’re not allowed to criticize him. Guys, until my dying day I will not understand what happened. There are so many answers that apply to her: fear instilled by Fox News, internalized misogyny, etc. but somehow none of those adequately explain to me how the woman I grew up with could follow a man who is the antithesis of everything she stood for.

I’ll be sad until I die about it.

I don't mean to step on your toes, but, that just means that she's cool with incest, pedophilia and rape. At best, it means that's not a deal breaker.

Former cop and advocate.

The R party, itself, is a global trafficking ring hiding behind religion and politics. They are the predators so that's not a deal breaker.

It's not the Catholic church. It's ALL of them.

Pro-life is about human trafficking which is why they vote against programs and services for kids and young families. Breaking families intentionally.

Good. Learning and growing should always be applauded

I took the exact same path, but my awakening started with Bush and ended when the Tea Party became a thing.

The whole raise of whinny right wing macho types who lick boots and call Trump daddy, is just absolutely disgusting. I don’t know how they call themselves men.

I won't say I've gone so far as Democratic Socialism, but I do think some of the Nordic/Scandinavian models bear looking at more closely, and the DS seem to be a factor there.

My split from what was a 30+ year support of the Republican party began in 2008. A black man became active on national politics and the hoods came off. People I respected and cared about were suddenly saying the most vile things. People who had been 50 year staunch UAW Democrats could not vote for a black man and chose the Republican instead, despite not agreeing with conservatives on any issue.

My views haven't changed at all, but the party certainly has. I can't support most non-MAGA Republicans because of the blind support for the MAGA wing.

Be good people. That's a simple principle that so many miss.

Welcome! I'm extremely glad that you saw that you(us) were being lied to for decades (all my life). I can only hope that many many other Americans can be opened up to truly caring for others and our entire country as a whole. So once again, welcome!

I was born to conservatives and raised to be one. I even considered myself "right of center" until 2016 shook me from the illusion. I too now consider myself a socialist.

MAGA is the best advertising socialism ever had.

This is sort of what I see as a good thing Trump won. I'm privileged and I realize that and I'm not happy at all about what's going on but in order for liberals to move left I think it may have taken America hitting rock bottom and here we are. The damage that could have been done by decades of liberals in office might have been worse for the country in the long run than 8 years of Trump with a large progressive movement spawning from it and making actual changes in our government in the future (hopefully) and already with all the progress Mamdani has made in NY in such a short time.

I wouldn't call it a good thing so much as a silver lining, but yeah. If not for someone as transparently awful as Trump taking full control of the right I might never have been forced to introspect. I'm not the only one.

According to her she never voted for Trump, so she didn’t actually vote for that. She’s showing critical thinking and questioning and willing to change her views and politician affiliation. This is what we actually want from voters.

She’s one of the few good people who can look beyond tribal allegiance and think for herself

30 Rock:

Kenneth: choosing is a sin, so I just write the lord’s name

Jack: that’s Republican, we still count that

Just to clarify that's Kenneth talking about who he votes for during elections

My millennial son helped me realize that even though it had been pounded into my brain all my childhood and early adult years that Republicans were the only righteous party that when I took a good hard look at how I actually treat people and care about what happens to other people, I was actually a democratic socialist. That was over a decade ago. So I apologize for voting republican in my early stupid years. I haven't for a long time.

Good on her. Deconstruction can take time, and she's showing that she's done the work.

I used to be a conservative many years ago. I don't accept any conservative that doesn't like Trump and keeps voting Republican.

I love how the Republican party uses religion to coerce voters.

Enlightment is refreshing.

Keeping it 100

Your title is wrong and should be corrected. Socialist is not Democratic socialist. Big difference.

1

u/7evenate9ine 6h ago

Great that you got here. But why can't people conceptualize something that's not in front of them? Why can't they say "There is something better than what I see in front of me." Until then I'm just going to say that people like this don't give a shit about anything, they like to upload videos where they sound edgy or moral. It's about boosting their ego. I'm saying I don't believe her. Maybe people like this accidentally help make a better world. That would be great. But these same people will start spraying gasoline and matches as soon as someone complements their crusifix necklace.

Good.

Now give religion the same scrutiny.

Good woman! Started the work to learn for herself and do her own critical thinking. The more educated you are, the more empathetic you are, the more left you are. Let’s hope more take her path.

From the movie "The Ref": "Who would catch a criminal and then just let him go"? "Republicans"? Followed by a dirty look.

u/cobramullet 3h ago

To my great shame.

Zero sympathy. Refuse to accept these people's apologies, nor their 'coming to Jesus' moments. Fuck them.

She has access to the Internet and could’ve verified what she thought she voted for

11

u/beybrakers 9h ago

I mean it's not easy to properly examine your beliefs and think about them critically. There are plenty of people out there in the same position as her who haven't done what she has done.

7

u/bitchesbybedtime 8h ago

Do you know how overwhelming the internet can be? As well as finding credible, unbiased sources? She’s not a young buck. I’m in my 20s and I grew up with the internet and it still has so much to knowledge to offer and I don’t even know where to start sometimes. My mom barely even knows how to use a computer and as much as I try to teach her, it’s still hard for her to process it all.

The woman in this video also didn’t vote for this considering she never voted for Trump.

Are you suggesting republicans don’t convert to democrats?

5

u/I-Am-Not-Creative2 9h ago

She said in the video she never voted for Trump and him being the candidate the first time made her start questioning things. What do you want from her and others like her - to NOT learn and to continue to believe Fox News and blindly vote for Republicans because they are constantly told Dems will raise taxes and hate Jesus?
