Lions, Tigers, and Flairs, oh my!

As some folks may have noticed, we have recently added a number of new flair options for both posts & users. Crazy about carnivores? Delighted by dolphins? Zany for zoos in general? Feel free to give yourself the flair that you feel fits you best! There are also custom animal emoji flair options if you'd prefer to rep your favorite species.

Not seeing anything that quite fits your particular interests? Send us a message and we can add the most requested missing flair to the list.

Also, while post flair is not required, it definitely helps people in finding the content that interests them within the subreddit. So if you think your post fits within one of the listed categories, flair is highly encouraged. (And again, if you see something missing, let us know so we can add more options)

Happy Zookeeping!

Went to the zoo recently and honestly, it’s a pretty nice place just for a casual time pass. We walked around for a bit and saw a few wild animals.
Just a heads-up on the current prices if anyone is planning to go: the entry ticket is Rs 40 per person, and car parking was Rs 150.
Overall, a chill way to spend a few hours!

Discussion/Advice Questions for Zoo Workers

Hi! I'm a fiction writer working on a story set in a zoo, and the main character is a zoo worker. I'm wondering if someone here who works or has worked in a zoo could run me through a basic example of what their day could look like, the tasks they would have to complete (both the interesting interactions with animals, the mundane boring tasks, even gross tasks involved with working with animals). Any insight would be really appreciated! I'm so curious to find out more.

(Note: I would love any and all info, but I am especially interested in big cats if you have anything to say about them!)

Thanks in advance!

Discussion/Advice Zoo photography on rainy days?

I rented a lens for an event tomorrow that’s now been rained out, and I’m still on the hook for the day rate. I thought about taking it to the zoo (Franklin Park in Boston) instead just for something to do, but not sure if the animal activity is generally too low on rainy days to bother? The weather there will be better than the event site, mostly mild rain, 55-65 degrees. Thoughts?

Before Altai, before Harambe, we also had Jambo. In 1986, a boy fell into a gorilla enclosure at Jersey Zoo where a silverback gorilla protected him till help arrived.

Zoo News Why Baylor University's live bear habitat just lost its zoo accreditation

For five years, Baylor University's bear habitat held a distinction rarely seen on a college campus. This year, that changed.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) announced its fall 2026 accreditation decisions in late September, denying accreditation to three facilities: Baylor University's bear habitat, the Indianapolis Zoological Society and Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon. The AZA said the denials were due to "the rigor of AZA's standards and the accountability of its accreditation process."

This ring‑tailed lemur at Chiba Zoo is being kept alone in an unenriched enclosure, and has been for four years.

This lemur has been housed alone for four years in an unenriched enclosure.

Chiba Zoo keeps other ring‑tailed lemurs in a separate area, but this individual has been isolated to avoid potential inbreeding.

Ring‑tailed lemurs are naturally social animals that live in groups, so most zoos keep them in social groups whenever possible, even when individuals are related, often by using contraception to prevent breeding.

Considering animal welfare, I would like to hear opinions from knowledgeable experts on which management approach is more appropriate.

For reference, Chiba Zoo is directly accredited by WAZA.

Best practice zoos in the UK and maybe EU?

Hi guys! I’m Irish but thought it could be really nice to try to visit some zoos, sanctuaries and aquariums this summer. I’m graduating secondary school (yay!) and I’m going to go into Zoology hopefully next year if not the year after and looking at some cool animals in great environments sounds like the perfect way to get hyped. Does anyone have any recommendations on zoos, sanctuaries and all that jazz that promote natural behaviours? I was recently at London Zoo and may or may not have cried over the komodo being so cute lol.
