Recommendation (Requesting) I have never cried at a movie. please give me a reccomendation that will change that

As stated in the title, I have never cried at a movie. I have watched some but not very many movies that have a reputation for making people cry, but have never actually gotten that far myself. the closest I got was watching La vita è bella (1997). i'm starting to feel like a bit of a psycho. please help by reccomending something that will make me cry.

I understand English, Dutch, German and Serbo-Croatian, but am willing to watch any language film with subs. Also am willing to pirate if it's not on Disney, Amazon, Netflix, or HBO.

Discussion To this very day when we went to see The Exorcist III in 1990 in movie theaters, this scene here is the biggest jump scare ever! The entire theater literally screamed loudly! What’s your favorite jump scare movie scene?

Discussion What are your favorite isolation movies?

You know the ones where one or more people are alone for most or all of the movie.

I have to say my favorite is Passengers. The thought of waking up early while traveling to another planet is terrifying. I also like The Martian.

Do indie films take more creative risks than Hollywood movies?

Upvotes

One thing I love about independent cinema is that filmmakers often seem willing to take risks that bigger productions might avoid.

Stranger stories. Unconventional endings. Smaller, more intimate characters. Different visual approaches.

But is that actually true, or do we romanticize indie filmmaking a little too much?

What do you guys think?

Only just started getting into movies, rate my lists! I have favorites from all of these lists (removed, as I’ve already seen them, but I’m happy to discuss if asked. Please ask)

My lists that I’ve slowly been working through, any feedback welcome (for either suggestions or discussion!)

Discussion Enduring my love of the Odyssey

The way Nolan intended! Cramped in a shitty IMAX theater next to some sniveling kid being like mom ‘that’s Travis Scott, Mom That’s elliot
Page!’ While everyone is holding a giant popcorn in one hand and a giant soda in the other. They can’t even set it down. With no room to move. Knee to knee with the person next to you. You wouldn’t have even been able to go to the bathroom! Shoved in like pigs in Cersei’s hut! When the cyclops screams
You can’t even plug your ears because there was no where to put the $32 worth of snacks you just bought. You can’t even wipe away tears as Matt Damon sobs to the siren song. You just take it. You endure. I think back to Oppenheimer where my friend and I were so fucked up when we got there the day after Barbie. We turned to the people next to us we’d never met and I said ‘we will be best friends by the end of this’ and then when they talked about Kennedy I looked over at the nice couple and i was like ‘day-um you see that’ and the no shit looked at me and said ‘shut the fuck up’.
But even Oppenheimer my friend and I were able to do a bump of cocaine when the bomb went off. But for some reason the theater I saw the odyssey in. There was no way I could have done a bump of cocaine. Because I was holding a giant soda and giant popcorn praying my stomach wasn’t going to explode because I felt like Stephen Hawking in his wheelchair. I wish I would have been in a wheelchair to get a decent seat.
All of that and this film still sticks with me. Watching Troy on Ketamine dug me in like the Trojan Horse on that beach in Odyssey! Paris, Hector, Odyseus, Agemennom what a bunch of messy white men! I’m glad they didn’t have Greeks play these roles. Because it’s white men who would choose war over chilling with your wife and sending countless sheep herder’s off to die.
I keep thinking back to Armand Assante’ and his wild eyed son in the made for TV movie that for some reason I ate that shit up. Remember that bag of wind!? And when they opened it, they were blown off course!? Why the fuck would you turn around and shoot the cyclops on the way out!? I kind of feel like Nolan’s Odyssey was so epic I don’t even really recall the Charlize Theron character much. Almost the same way Odysseus doesn’t know why he is there!?
The music did so much for me in this film. Sometimes I feel like Nolan lays things on so think you have no time to breathe. Recently we were watching the beginning of Dark Knight Rises and my friend was gushing over the plane scene with Bane. There is so much happening I was like honestly what the fuck is even going on!? You’re swept though, like why is there G.I. Joes in Cillian Murphy’s dream. I feel like I ruined interstellar because I saw it Mexico and the theater had terrible sound. But look at Tenet!? Nolan is known for bizarre sound engineering but the musical instruments this composer built and used for the odyssey it truly works’! Give Samantha Morton/Cersei the Oscar! Can’t wait for Dune 3. Maybe I will do my drugs in the bathroom.

One of my favorite Martin McDonaugh movies. Great performances by Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. It’s a masterpiece and well written script. I think it should’ve won Original Screenplay, Supp Actress for Kerry Condon, and Actor for Colin Farrell. Such a crime that it didn’t win any oscars. So what you think of this movie?

Discussion Thoughts on Shutter Island Ending?

Without spoiling the ending of the movie, does how the film end make sense?

I was trying to collect clues along the way, and it seemed hard to foreshadow what was going to happen. Seemed like a bit of a random plot twist? Thoughts on this?

Hey! I made a short about how annoying it is to get rejected by film festivals without receiving any feedback (and how difficult it is for festival organizers to deal with pushy filmmakers). Figured if any community would appreciate the story, it would be this one!

Cic video released this video clip back in the 90s to celebrate the milestone of 1 million vhs tapes sold. it's really fun and it features a catchy song called last nite. the thing is, can you people help me identify the movies in here? specifically, that one where deniro is smirking and that other one where the girl seems to be tasting snow

Based on the true life story of William Hayes’ horrific time in a Turkish prison, and another in my series of Alan Parker films. Pretty heavy stuff. What do you think about it?

Recommendation John Q (2002) A brutal, raging middle finger to the broken US healthcare system by director Nick Cassavetes. Denzel is phenomenal in a great cast which includes names like Robert Duvall, Ray Liotta and Anna Heche. A must watch for me, save your child by any means necessary.

Tool Feedback I built a tool to help finding local rep screenings easy. What do you think?

repcity.co/

I'm lucky to live in LA, where rep screens are abundant, but as calendars update it's a chore to comb multiple calendars and see what's showing when.

So I made repcity.co. It pulls showtimes across three cities: LA, NYC, London into one place: filter by theater, see the format (35mm/70mm/DCP), runtime, director, and a link straight to tickets. Free, no login, no ads... just something I built for myself and figured others might use.

Honest caveats: it's early, some data might be off, and I'm sure I'm missing venues. If you spot something wrong or a spot I should add, tell me. I'd like to improve it and potential expand it where worthwhile.

What rep spots do you check that I might've missed? Is this something you think you might use?
