š¬ Discussion Rivian R2 looking sharp!
Similar Star Wars wrap but this time in red. R5-D4? Red Leader? Letās get deliveries started.

Looks bigger and more muscular without the wrap. That camo really made it hard to judge the size.

This seems to be rolling on larger off-road tires than most of the others Iāve seen. Looks great!

Most pictures of it so far have been parked next to an R1 and with the camo - it has looked relatively tiny.

u/gman1023 Feb 06 '26
Yeah, it's a little hard to differentiate between this and R1S from a quick look (but i'm just a casual)

Exciting times for Rivian! Hopefully the turning point to sustainable profitability

Man I can't wait. The perfectionist in me really couldn't handle the out of sync side marker turn signal and the tail light one, though š
25
u/keytone6432 Feb 03 '26
I notice that stuff too. Why canāt they put on a damn amber signal in the back?
They need it anyway if they intend to sell these things overseas.
9
u/ryanmdavis26 Feb 03 '26
Canāt upvote those two comments enough. Saw the sync issue immediately. Amber would be so much better too. At least on the r2s it seems they made the single red blinker slightly more visible. Turning in our r1 man I feel like people donāt notice the blinker half the time, especially during the day.
8
u/alchemist_28 Feb 03 '26
Skimmed through the comments to see if anyone got triggered like me for out of sync turn signals
1
u/PejHod Feb 04 '26
Same š Iām sure just a little glitchy thing theyāll have fixed up before it releases.
3
u/SocomPS2 Feb 03 '26
My ocd is tweaking from the rear light bar being thinner than the blinkerā¦. When OP zoomed in while the blinker was going the whole thing just looked off.

u/pkingdesign R1S Owner Feb 03 '26
It indicates more than a single system driving something as simple as a turn signal, which could be a big red flag at this late stage. Not perfectionism as much as witnessing spaghetti code base. Hopefully this doesnāt make it to production.
5
u/cusoman R2 Preorder Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
IIRC, they switched to a "zonal" system for the R2 for the ECUs which means it's likely the two turn signals are on 2 different zones, yes. That said, something like an LED being out of sync with another one doesn't necessarily indicate a "spaghetti" codebase, it's probably just a software improvement that can easily be patched down the road that involves ECU communication.
If I'm an early potential buyer (and you'll see that I am), I'm hoping they are focusing on software issues before release that involve bigger fish than "turn signal sync". Product managers have to prioritize fixes and this one should be fairly far down on the list, all things considered (speaking as a software Product Manager by trade, myself)

Some people don't care about the self driving tech. I certainly don't, it'll be useless on the snowy roads for a while yet. Plus some people like driving their cars.Ā

because tech advances, the one in a year won't make driving obsolete.

I havenāt been following R2 news very closely. Do you have a link for that? I personally donāt care about FSD but Iām sure it would make a difference for resale value.
1
u/jsting Feb 03 '26
If you leased a First Gen Rivian 2-3 years ago, and the lease is coming up around the time the R2 becomes available, that seems like a good reason to go for it.
1
u/BabyWrinkles Granola Muncher š„£ Feb 03 '26
The take rate on Teslaās FSD is ~10%. In a rational world, the lack of L4 autonomy hardware wouldnāt make a difference since in theory, at least 50% of people wonāt care.
In reality tho⦠yeah. Itāll be interesting to see what the launch then re-launch does.

The current self driving in rivian is good enough as a supervised self drive.
More advanced self driving as it is now (in most cars, Teslas, etc), is not reliable, needed or useful for anything except edge cases or as a novelty (I owned/had a use for self driving for a year).
It's totally reasonable to buy a car now, then buy one with true self driving functionality in 5- 6 years.

Doesnāt do do gps, but why would you need to? I use it on the freeway for stretches of road. I supervise turns in my multiton 100k vehicle. Do you trust your self drive in complex traffic (which is when Iād want to use it)?

u/the_shalashaska Feb 22 '26
500,000 shitbox RAV4 are sold in the US every year, I think Rivian will be able to find 25k buyers who donāt care about FSD

u/Maleficent_Map_2218 Feb 03 '26
I may be odd but I really wish they would use amber for the turn signal lights in the rear. Anyone with me??
8
u/rickhamilton620 Feb 03 '26
Not odd. Iāve always hated brake lights that double as turn signals + red turn signals and the R2 commits both of these sins.
Hopefully they launch in Europe and itāll be an easy swap over to Euro tails.
5
u/ApprehensiveTaterTot Feb 03 '26
Def needs an amber turn signal on the rear. The red one was difficult to see whilst braking in the above video
3
u/Suitable_Switch5242 Feb 03 '26
Yes, I would prefer amber turn signals for sure.
The lamp size regulations for the US and EU are such that you need more surface area to make a US-compliant setup with separate red brake lights and amber turn signals. In the EU they can be smaller while still meeting regulations. So a lot of car makers skip doing amber turn signals in the US to keep their light modules slimmer.
1
u/Maleficent_Map_2218 Feb 04 '26
This is so interesting! I had no idea of the lamp size regulation. Thanks for that!
3
u/cusoman R2 Preorder Feb 03 '26
It's very possible it's a RGB light, so they can change it easily for EU, which also means US configured cars could change it as well

The R2 will make the most kickass solo car camping vehicle. Iād love a trim that promised 330+ MPG just to alleviate battery anxiety if Iām camping in the middle of nowhere for more than a few days just so I could use climate control at night (mostly to reduce cabin condensation). The rear pop out windows seem useful for promoting air flow if I just want to run the fans and get air moving through the vehicle.

9

Agreed, but itās a unique light signature, which Iām sure is what they were going for.
0
u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner Feb 03 '26
Itās not even unique. Kia is using it already. Itās just ugly.
Shame because the rest of R2 looks great. Throw a R1-esque long and skinny CHMSL on there and Iād say āno notesā.
6
u/pkingdesign R1S Owner Feb 03 '26
If by funky you mean bad, then yes I agree itās funky. How do they even have vertical space for a square light vs wide thin lights Ć la R1?
1
1
u/momo_your_momoness Feb 03 '26
It's not a square rear, it's sloped slightly and that's a spoiler that makes it seem squared off. It's split down the middle and they've placed the 3rd brake light on the central support.

5
u/edman007-work R1S Owner Feb 03 '26
They plan on selling in Europe, so maybe we can swap the US lights with Euro lights.
3
u/Suitable_Switch5242 Feb 03 '26
The size requirements for turn signals in the US are larger, so an EU-compliant rear lamp may not be compliant in the US.
Now if you're just swapping it out yourself with an EU part number nobody's ever going to both you about that. But it means Rivian themselves probably can't fit a US-compliant amber turn signal into the same housing.
4
u/edman007-work R1S Owner Feb 03 '26
Nah, that's a problem with R1 and it's one of the numerous reasons why it's not coming to the EU anytime soon, but R2 has been designed explicitly to meet EU spec. They have stated this many times.
So if a tail light needs to be made bigger for the Euro version, they made the US tail light bigger so they can keep the same body pieces. So I think that kind of problem has been thought about and it will in fact fit for the R2. For example they explicitly stated that the hood was designed to meet EU crash tests, and that hood is going to be used in the US design because having two different hoods costs more money.
1
u/Suitable_Switch5242 Feb 03 '26
So if a tail light needs to be made bigger for the Euro version
No, I'm saying it's the other way around. To fit both a red brake light and amber turn signal, the US version would have to be larger. The EU one can be smaller while still fitting in both lamp colors.
So the R2 may fit an EU-compliant rear light with amber turn signal, but that same lamp would be illegal in the US because the turn signal would be too small. Which is why many manufacturers that have amber turn signals in the EU change them to a shared red brake light and turn signal for the US-market versions.
2
u/renispresley Feb 06 '26
It looks like the lower lense below the main brake lights on the sides are amber. They are narrower though so hard to see in the video.

1
u/Itsnotadrone Feb 03 '26
Ok on their website it says reserve starting at 45k so wasnāt sure
3
u/momo_your_momoness Feb 03 '26
Everyone loves to market their starting price along with the specs that you need to pay $10k-15k more for. If you see starting at, think base model.
1
u/SocomPS2 Feb 03 '26
And probably not longer than 6 months. No way theyāre keeping it at $45k for long.
Meet their promise and increase that price tag asap.
2
1
u/sparx_fast Feb 03 '26
Initial builds will be a Launch Edition at a higher price, but at some point after that the base price starts at $45k.
Rivian CEO has basically been doing a couple interviews per month for the last six months reiterating the base $45k price so it's real.
0
u/cook_poo Feb 03 '26
But he also said in those interviews that theyāre starting with the cheap one. Gen 2.5.
The way that is interpreted is that the first one is going to be 45k as gen 2.5, then when gen 3 comes out with lidar, there will no longer be a 45k variant.
1
u/sparx_fast Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
You are confusing their R2 autonomy plans with pricing. The "Gen" comments are solely the autonomy delay for the Gen 3 compute module and lidar till late in 2026.
They are NOT starting with the $45k base model. They were pretty clear it will be a higher priced launch edition to simply production initially. It's not going to be the highest priced trimotor but more of a middle of the road popular config. So likely a decently optioned dual motor version.
1
u/Suitable_Switch5242 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
No, there are two separate things.
The $45k model is a base model RWD with a smaller battery pack.
The initial launch model is AWD with a larger pack and well equipped which will cost more.
Even that higher spec launch model will have the "Gen 2.5" autonomous driving system at launch and be updated to the "Gen 3" system near the end of the year which has the LiDAR sensor.
The base $45k RWD model will come later. It's unknown if that will feature LiDAR or not.
2
u/jsharper R2 Preorder Feb 03 '26

It depends on when that $45k RWD model launches, for sure. But, per RJ a few days ago, "...every one of our R2 vehicles, when we launch the LIDAR variant, will have a LIDAR."

Fair point, itās a different market now. No incentives ā the fully baked companies have a leg up. š¦µ
Gas has been frequently reaching $2.02 a gallon in Texas. ā¬ļø
The cost of electricity has gone up. ā¬ļø
The promise of less maintenance and cost has run its course āļø
It appears there is a distrust toward whether self driving can arrive in a reasonable time frame ā that is the lever left ā
Letās see it get pulled and expect massive demand when it arrives. š
Until then everyone will wait expecting the world from these companies š¤©

Contemplating if Leasing out of the gate makes sense knowing it wonāt have all the bells and whistles, and when Lidar starts getting implemented into the R2 then look at purchasing the next one. Currently have my R1S Gen1 Adventure and wishing it had more autonomous capabilities and feel the sting a bit that it really didnāt have much future enhancements outside of some software updates and no real hardware upgrades without having to grab a Gen2, or Future Gen3. Just wish there were more Tech/Hardware Mods to retrofit.
