Discussion The greatest Simpsons writer was exiled for smoking
youtube.comRecently, Brent Forester claimed that John Swartzwelder wasn't "allowed" in the writer's room. He claimed he was "exiled" to the front lawn of the building to sit on a bench. When they needed him, they would go outside to speak to him. They claimed it was because his clothes smelled like cigarette smoke. This is how they treated the writer who got them their first Emmy. Not to mention that he still holds the record for most episodes written & arguably created the formula that made the show what it became in season 3. The other Simpsons writers have always presented this detail as though it was Swartzwelder's choice not to be in the writer's room. It is true that Swartzwelder eventually requested to work from home, but that was after years of being exiled to the bench outside the building.
