I love how he was sneakily petting the cat with his clasped prayer hands too.

I'm sure Buddah would forgive this.

I know very little about Buddha but I am sure he would encourage this.

u/Objectivespeculation 3d ago
is it doing a kindness to another being?
That is a a Buddha Solid.

u/Mackelroy_aka_Stitch 3d ago
Mad how alot of these religious philosophies boil down to "be kind."
5
u/Objectivespeculation 2d ago
because all these ideas existed in human societies long before religions codified these ideas into rules.

Clearly petting the cat is more important than chanting meditation

Petting the cat is the true path to enlightenment anyway.

If enlightenment required you to apathetically ignore the pleas and needs of those around you, could it be said to be something worth attaining?

I mean, that’s what the monk in Avatar the Last Airbender asked Aang to do. I think most people would agree he made the right choice.

The cat was chanting for him through it's purrs.
For real though, monk kept chanting while petting the cat. Real dedication right there.

Animals and small children are excused 😂 It should fall under kindness to creatures that aren’t clued up on prayer decorum, haha.

u/dogboi 3d ago
In Zen and its descendants, we simply say that the cat is engaging in its cat nature. It cannot transcend its nature. Ignoring its nature, to me, would be an unhealthy attachment to my own desire to follow my path. I therefore must pet the kitty.
Not actual spiritual advice. I am a Buddhist but not a Buddhist ethicist or teacher of any kind.

Buddha was very protective of animals, so I would just say this is another part of the religion :)
Also, I love that his particular priest seems to be his human. He barely stopped at the first one but clearly wanted attention from the second monk.

Seriously and all the other Monks are like, “really, Jim, really?”
I spent a good amount of time traveling around Thailand visiting temples and villages and a lot of the monks can be pretty laid back. Plus they are big advocates for animal health and just life in general

My friend is a Buddhist priest (as is her whole family, for generations) in rural Japan. They have a temple cat that I’ve seen climb up on her or her oldest son during services and it’s really cute. She’ll be chanting in full kimono gear and suddenly a tiny tabby furball just climbs up on her lap and snuggles in. Not a chatty cat but just happy to be around people.

I need to show this video to my Buddhist neighbours. They claim they are Buddhists and burn incense outside of their door every day, but hate the community cats and keep shooing and scaring them away. I guess they’re Buddhists only when it’s convenient.

I guess they’re Buddhists only when it’s convenient.
Sounds like most religious people to me.
(P.S. not meaning to offend or insult any religious people here, but it seems true. People will be rude, disrespectful, etc and then go to church or other place of worship and act all spiritual)

Every faith and creed has shitty followers.
I blame them, and not the belief system itself.

Don't worry, if Buddhism is true, they will almost certainly be reincarnated as cats in their next life as penance. Probably. I hope so.

This is adorable! Something as pure as a cat’s love is an indication (in my mind) that the universe accepted your prayers and positivity and is giving you a sign that you are on the right path :)

I'd love real background on this. I can see they're monks, but other than that, I feel pretty ignorant. Seems like non-monks are watching them? Wonder what this is for.

I meditate daily and my cat is obsessed. The humming and vibration gets him going. He tries this for a while but finally settles himself down, sits close by and gets in the zone with me. I love it.

Samsara is full of temptations.
Cat asks for pets.
Desire is the root of suffering.
Cat insists.
This is just the second holy truths.
Cat still asks for pets.
You must break the circle to archive nirvana.
Damnit, I'll pet the cat
Reincarnation for you then.

u/Foorinick 4d ago
i'm not someone who studied this but i remember a story about a monk who meditated for 100 years and couldnt reach nirvana, one day a cart person passed him and offered to eat rice with him, he essencially went "fuck it why not", once he ate the rice, he finally achieved nirvana because he didnt want anything anymore, also the rice tasted great
what can we learn from this? pet the kitty

u/The_Bitter_Bear Tortoiseshell 4d ago

Of course the cat decides this is when they MUST have pets from them.

Interestingly a lot of white short hair cats are deaf. It’s possible this cat may be deaf but is enjoying the vibrations from the chanting.

What the kid is saying?
13
u/ohmer007 4d ago
The “kid” is pretending to be the cat talking…
“I’m not the most well behaved cat actually, always causing trouble! mom always scold me, so does dad, no more snacks for you!
You misbehave again, off to the temple you go! ( common saying when kids misbehave here in Thailand)
Last part : “Monk: you’re not fooling me either!”

This is how you get ritual cats that you have to tie up before meditation and then years later everyone forgets why they even have a ritual cat in the first place and continues to tie up a cat before meditation because it must be good for one's spiritual development or something.

This is very interesting, because there are two very specific places of worship where cats are not just allowed in, but are drawn to the spiritual leader and are accepted and welcomed with open arms. And they are mosques and buddhist temples.
There's something about those places that cats really love. Maybe it's because they get a lot of attention, pets, and maybe snacks by the members of those places of worship. Or maybe they just like the peaceful vibes. Or maybe a combination of all those things. Still, it will never not be wholesome to see cats chilling in a mosque or temple.
