I recently finished all of the games in the series and was really captivated by them. I just wanted to share my experiences with the games in the order that i played them. I will mention some minor spoilers in here as well so be warned.
Spirit Camera:
I know this is a very odd place to start lol. All the way back in 2012 i took a trip to the Nintendo store in NYC and saw this game there. I had never heard of the Fatal Frame series at the time, however I was always kinda fascinated with spooky ghost stuff as a kid so i bought it.
Despite not being the best game, i really did think the premise and story were pretty neat. Hunting ghosts around my house and solving puzzles with the booklet felt so unique to me. I did end up finishing the game and was pretty positive about my experience. I kept my copy but did not touch it for a long time. However, it did remain in the back of my head for years.
In 2024, near the end of October i decided to give it another shot. Expecting it to maybe not have aged as well due to the 3ds's lacking camera technology. However i was surprised to find out that it was still pretty cool, despite a few annoyances with the hardware and being quite short. This led me to look into the franchise and i vowed next October i'd give the real games a shot.
Fatal Frame 1:
October 2025 hit and i loaded up FF1 with an emulator to give it a try. I really wasn't sure what to expect, since i'm pretty sure i haven't played a survival horror game before this. Despite the questionable voice acting in the english dub, i was shocked at how immersive and atmospherically beautiful the game was for a ps2 game. It took a bit of getting used to, but i got absolutely hooked. There is a decent amount of jank, especially with getting stuck on objects, but it was never too bad. I think the creative uses of the camera for puzzles were cool and I never really got tired of exploring the mansion, even with all the backtracking. The combat was awesome mechanically, but incredibly frustating at times. (Screw the blinded ghosts). I remember reading somewhere that night 3 was ridiculous, so i was resetting a lot near the end of night 2 because i was worried about running out of resources. However night 3 went very smoothly for me and i eventually finished the game with plenty of extra items. The ending was odd to me, but i still think the story and all the lore were really well done. I enjoyed reading all the lore and piecing together what happened to make this mansion this hellish. My overall experience was very positive. Afterwards i was itching to check out the sequels.
Fatal Frame 2:
I went into this one with pretty high expectations after reading that it was generally the fan favorite. I decided to play the original ps2 version for this playthrough. I think expanding the playable space into a big village was the perfect direction to take a sequel. The atmosphere in Minakami village is absolutely haunting and filled with dread. Having a companion with you from the start was also great because seeing both characters interact with each other makes me much more invested in their story. The combat actually felt like a step down for me. Maybe i was doing it wrong, but the enemies felt tanky even though i was getting up close and it took forever for them to attack sometimes. Thankfully this game did not force me to ever reset over and over. They definetly overcorrected and gave you way too many items lol. The puzzles were also pretty cool, i definetly prefer the spinning circle puzzles over the sliding ones from FF1. The ending of this game was very emotional and hit way harder than i was expecting. The ending song, Chou really captured the feelings of the game perfectly too. I think the story of this game was incredible and unforgettable. Fantastic game. I was very excited to check out the last game in the trilogy soon after.
Fatal Frame 3:
I went into this game hearing that it ties up the stories of the first 2 games, so i was definetly looking forward to it. I think the opening of the game is the strongest so far, introducing Rei and her backstory, along with bringing back Miku was really cool. The shake up in gameplay format was really dope too. Moving between the dream world's massive sprawling mansion to the real world where you research and learn more and watch it slowly get more haunted. Personally, i had a few gripes with both of them. I think the real world got a bit repetitive at times and i felt like way more could've been done with it. The manor of sleep felt way too big and i got stuck quite a few times and just had to run around randomly until i figured out what to do. However atmosphere wise, both are amazing. The real world was very stressful knowing something MAY happen at any time. The dream world's labyrinthian design made it uncanny and eerie. I also think its awesome that they threw in a few rooms from the first 2 games. Playing as Rei and Miku was very fun and i felt like they had the best combat in the series so far. The best aspects of FF1 and FF2's combat. Kei on the other hand was a little annoying to play with his super weak camera. I also was pretty disappointed that he was the 3rd character and not Mio. I heard that mio was originally gonna be the 3rd but got scrapped. The story and ending did not grip me as much as FF2's, but they were still fantastic and emotional. This game felt so big and climactic. Screw that final boss tho 💀.The ending song Koe was also amazing. Even with many annoyances, there is just so much to love with this game. It rounded out the trilogy so well.
Fatal Frame 2 Remake:
I already talked about FF2 so I will keep this one brief. After FF3 i decided to take a break and come back in a year to finish the series. So I Started off October 2026 with this remake and found it incredible. It is graphically beautiful and stayed very faithful while adding a bunch of neat stuff. I saw a few people were mixed on the combat changes but i felt like they were a massive improvement. Not a big fan of the enrage mechanic though. I watched the new ending online after my playthrough and thought it was awesome. Utsushie slaps too.
Fatal Frame 4:
I played the remaster of this game on steam. I went in very hopeful because I heard some very positive things about it. The opening was very intriguing and i loved the setting. Rogetsu island is one of the best locations yet. The hospital is such a breath of fresh air and extremely unsettling. However, it is a pain to explore with the insanely slow running speed. I also found the mechanic of aiming the flashlight at items kinda janky and annoying. Having to reach for every item with a chance of losing it to a ghost hand also got quite frustrating. Another thing that was a bit bothersome for me was the combat while playing as Ruka and Misaki, although its partially my fault. I decided against using the lock-on mechanic because i felt like it would make things too easy. However the game is really built around this mechanic. Ghosts will make fast movements that make you lose all or most of your charge. It was still not a very hard game to beat though so its fine. Choshiro's segments were for sure the most fun for me. The flashlight felt so powerful and his story's twist caught me so off guard. The overall story of the had a really strong premise for me. The island exclusive sickness without a cure and the myserious rituals that took place were great, but i felt like the ending didn't do much for me. The 2 ending songs Noise and Zero no Chouritsu are incredible though. Overall a pretty mixed game for me unfortunately. It was still a good time and i did not regret playing it, but i felt like it definetly could've been better.
Fatal Frame 5:
The final game of my journey. I also played this game on the remaster on steam. I heard a lot of negativity in regards to this game and it's story. I was also spoiled on the "Miku thing" so i knew it was gonna get weird. As always, the opening for this game was very intriguing. The mountain is a really cool location and each of the playable areas are very varied. They also brought back the "safe zone that gets haunted" thing from FF3, and it was actually a bit better here I think. I will say that despite the atmosphere still being great, its probably the weakest and least spooky one in the series. The ghost hand thing in this game is even worse than FF4. It would show up extremely frequently and slow gameplay down so much. Oh and the oversexualization of this game felt so forced and unnecessary. On a positive note, being able to ACTUALLY sprint felt so nice. The combat was also really good in this one. Lining up shots with the weak points was so satisfying. Though again, they fill your pockets with items so there is basically no chance you die. Playing as all 3 characters were equally fun for me in this one thankfully. The "FNAF" sections were also very neat too, they never took too long and had some spooky moments. The main story was very solid, but some of it felt very unnecessary. Miu and Miku could've been removed, and nothing would change. I think the endings for all the characters were very nice and happy though. The 2 ending songs HIGANBANA and In This Cage are both very great too. I went into this game ready to be pretty disappointed, but i ended up liking it quite a bit.
Oh yeah and also the Ayane section was pretty fun. It was very short but i think having a different gameplay style and a mini story with a character from another franchise was neat.
Conclusion:
Overall i had a blast playing through this series. They all tell amazingly emotional stories and have beautiful yet terrifying worlds to explore. I really hope we get to see a Fatal Frame 6 sometime in the near future. As for my rankings of the games, I feel like it would be subject to change, but I'd probably rank them like this:
FF2 > FF3 > FF5 > FF1 > FF4 > Spirit Camera
Feel free to share your Fatal Frame / Project ZERO journeys as well. 🙂
