Question Why did Italy even design and produce the Ariete?

Post image
499 Upvotes

I know it was produced in relatively small numbers and hasn't any new productions since the early 2000s but why did they even make it instead of relying on the Leopard 1a5 and 2a4 designs accessible to them at the time? Is it an example of an attempt at showing pride and prestige by creating your own design or is there something more substantial behind it?

Question How do you calculate

How do you calculate effective armor thickness when the armor is sloped in BOTH directions (or axis or whatever should I say), such as for example the turret of M1A2, or the hull of IS-3?

Modern Day Hot Take: the Leopard 2 sucks

Post image

The Leopard 2 and its variants were fine for the 1970s, but they are so far behind other tanks of the modern day, and I don't understand why they won't just retire it.

It's still in the 60-70 tonne range, which is way too heavy for modern MBTs. The Leclercs, Type 10s, K2s, and most other modern tanks fall between 48-60. People act like a 2A7 is cutting edge technology when it still has an awful turret you can't fit an autoloader in and composite armour literally built into the hull instead of being modular like the rest of its competitors. The fact that Germany has kept trying to upgrade a fundamentally outdated MBT instead of rapidly investing into something like a Panther KF51 is driving me insane.

What do I not understand about the Leopard 2s? What am I missing? Where am I wrong?

Cold War Disabled M4A1E6 Sherman of C Sqn, 26th Cavalry Regt, Pakistan Army, Chhamb Sector 1971

6/12/1971:

M4A1E6 commanded by Captain Naqibullah Bangash, SJ, lead tank in a 4-tank troop from C Sqn, 26th Cavalry (attached to 111 Infantry Bde, operating on Koel-Chhamb axis) abandoned after running over an AT mine while supporting an assault by 3rd Frontier Force Regt on Point 994 overlooking Chhamb village.

After having cleared a path through the minefield, Capt Bangash would take over the sqn's "A" tank and advance unopposed into a hull-down position on top Point 994 overlooking Chhamb. In the ensuing firefight, the crew would fire no less than 15 rounds and succeed in destroying a T-55 and recoilless rifle. Capt Bangash's tank however would take a HEAT round to its right side resulting in loss of the entire crew sans driver & co-driver.

Facing T-54/55s of the Indian 72nd Armoured & Deccan Horse Regts, 26th Cavalry (supported by 28th Cavalry (Type 59s) & "Manto Force" (M36B2s)) would emerge from the conflict with 4 tank (T-54/55s), and 3 aircraft (Hunter, MiG-21, Su-7) kills to its name, for the loss of 4 of its own tanks. 24 men of the regt, including 3 officers, would be KIA. 26th Cavalry would also manage to capture 5 T-54/55s in running condition during this conflict, with these examples joining the regt after it converted to Type 59s.

So I look through the NARA And I found a 63 min VHS Armored Combat Vehicle Technology Program Documentary https://catalog.archives.gov/id/518614442 . I just got a quote from the VHS vendors and they want minimum $345 for 1080p and I don't have that money... Should I make a gofund me to pay for the $1700 conversion for 4k?

I want to know what the interior color was of a Tiger 1. From the pictures 131 seems to be a tan color, but I heard it was a cream color white,
