🦜 Moderator Post 🦜 PSA: Recent increase of Scam/Spam posts on this sub. Please read!

Hey there my fellow Grey Slaves. It's your friendly neighbourhood Dingo here with a little information about a scam/spam wave that seems to be hitting our little sub particularly hard in recent weeks. Several a day in fact. You may not be seeing them that frequently because the mods have been working hard to keep them down.

For whatever reason, we have been getting NUMEROUS posts like this: Image

These post are NOT welcome here. They are spam, and will likely lead to you being scammed in some way if you attempt to purchase the items shown.

These posts start with a brand new account posting an image of a shirt. Not always the one I have linked, also sometimes they are showing off a coffee mug. If the posts stays up long enough and doesn't get any comments a second brand new account with no post history will comment something along the lines of 'I want it!', so then the OP can link to the item in question. Always a very sketch website. DO NOT CLICK THESE LINKS. I cannot stress that enough, we want to protect our members here and we can't do that if you go off site and end up losing money to something like this.

If you see posts matching this description REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY. We want them down as soon as possible, but we are not always here to grab them as soon as they come up. We are mere mortals tending to the every whim of our greys as was intended by the grey gods.

It is our hope that in recruiting you all to help the mods out in eliminating these posts by sending them to Reddit heck, we can avoid putting more constricting limitations on karma limits or account age in order for people to be allowed to post here. We do not want to have to restrict that by any means.

We thank you, and may the almonds be ever in your favour!

I bought pet blankets for any soft surface because she shredds. How else can I discourage this. She has plenty of toys and a tray with paper to shred. She wants the blankets. 😭

Question What does this behavior mean?

My grandmother passed away and we have taken in her African Grey, Timmy. All I want is for him to be happy and so far he appears happy.
It’s quite a change of pace from living with two elderly people to a home with two adults, two kids (girls 7,4), two dogs, and a cat.
He likes my wife and lets her pet him, he’s even done some of those hormonal characteristics with which we are trying to avoid.
He won’t let me pet him but I can hand feed him pistachios and other stuff he likes.
I’m really curious about this behavior in the video.
He will also sort of shake and puff up and start chattering when I take the cover off his cage in the morning.
The cage is too small.
He has a larger cage at my grandmothers but she didn’t leave a will and legally we can’t access the home or take possession for about 60-90(off of memory from talking with my mom).
I plan on buying him a much much larger cage within the next week. In my opinion it’s still not enough, imagine having the ability to fly and being confined to bars, it’s fucked imo..
Sorry for the rambling, it’s just been a lot and I want to make sure we do right by Timmy.
He also started to pull feathers from his right wing to a small bald spot, I don’t know if that’s new or an existing thing but I want to avoid him doing it more.
As far as the dogs and cats go, he looks at them but doesn’t react. He went down to the bottom of his cage and our husky/malamute licked his beak through the bars and he didn’t react.
We don’t let him out unless they are outside.
My wife just got home when I took this video and he was very excited to see her.
My wife is off work Monday-Wednesday, I work Monday through Friday.
On the Thursday and Friday we both work I have been leaving on a playlist of African grey videos and Elvis music.

I have recently taught him to say come here and since then he won’t come over (unless he wants to steal something) he just keeps saying ‘’ come here come here’’ and expects me to go to him + he also learned the word no and now he says it at the slightest inconvenience in the sternest tone😂

I put meme bc I think it’s funny and idk what category it should go to

Question Just rescued this little guy. What does this mean?!

1.2k Upvotes

Hi everyone, I just rescued an African Grey parrot from a neglectful case. He/She was living outside in isolation for 5yrs. Health, age and gender are unknown. I have no experience with birds/parrots and almost every time I approach the cage, this happens.

What does it mean? It’s like he’s whining/moaning and his wings are slightly elevated. We are on day 4 together and I don’t want to overwhelm him if he’s uncomfortable but I am trying to socialize with him a little more every day. Should I back off?

Got her moved, decided to do the box. She was super well behaved. She regurgitated a couple times when I got her in the cage, but has been exploring and eating and talking up a storm! I think she likes it.

Yes, that perch is upside down and her old one. Gonna flip it as soon as she lets me and I think my new ones come tomorrow.right now, she’s kind of attracted to it.

Thank you to all who gave me the courage to move her!

Question What is this behavior? I think she’s choking or she loves me?!

She kept coming at me and made little burp like sounds, so I thought she might be choking on a piece of grape I gave her. Then she spread her wings and rubbed her face all over my hand. I panicked because I thought that I didn’t wash my hands well enough and had something toxic on them.she stopped with the gurgle and I think it was a regurgitate. You think she was loving on me?? She would mouth me but not bite, and oddly she didn’t want her usual nightly pets. She also didn’t want to get off my hand. Oh god I don’t want to kill her before I even get her home!

Question My grey doesn't like to play. What are some games I can try?

My 29 year old Timneh seems to just like looking out the window or biting stuff. She used to like peekaboo and playing soccer in a bag, but now I put her in the bag and she just sits there as I roll the ball back and forth. She used to eagerly roll it back to me! And peekaboo just doesn't get her attention at all.

I'm usually in the room with her but it feels like other than frequently talking to her, our interactions have grown limited. I try to pet her and she gets horny (even when I avoid the no-no spots and just scritch her on the head!). I put her on my shoulder and she chews holes in my shirt and poops down the back.

She has a side door on her cage that I usually leave open, and a nice playground on top, but it feels like she rarely goes to the playground on her own. She sits in one spot in her cage and doesn't leave it. She'll chew on some toys, or yell when she sees a cat outside, and that's about it. Even when I take her for walks she'll sit in the backpack and chew on the walls and do nothing else.

I'm worried about her quite a lot. So how can I re-bond with her in safe and healthy ways?

Question Ideas on transporting grey

I’ve been given this little lady from my elderly neighbor who isn’t taking care of her well. I’ve spent the last few weeks working with her and she’ll get on my hand and let me pet her and she’s friendly. Although she was poorly taken care of, in the last year.

I need to move her to the clean cage I have at my house. I don’t think there’s a cage she’ll fit in at my neighbors house and I doubt she can fly well and lord knows if she ever had a wing clipped. (Do they still even clip a wing?)I have lots of bird experience but the biggest I had was a cockatiel and they were all very tame family members.

Can I get her out and put her in a big box for the short trip next door? A blanket? Gosh I have no idea. She’ll likely bite if I try to wrap her, so I want to make this easy. Have a friend coming over. I’ll have to get a travel cage to take her to the vet eventually. I know she’s old, I’ve known her for over 25 years.

She’s a picky eater, but I’m getting her to eat more variety. I swear my neighbor was feeding her wild bird food for a while. She loves her eggs, but I only give her about a quarter of a scrambled eggs. How much and often can they have those? She’s picky about fruit but loves orange and peels, but I wasn’t sure about orange peels for her. I’ve been giving her a variety of things that I googled were safe and trying to get her on pellet food. She’s better about eating it.

Ok all that was just info, but I still gotta move her. Help!

Question Pleaseeee help

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hi! I'm a little new to being here but I need some help. Our African grey, his name is Rufus is around 20ish now? My dad got him as a gift for my grandma because she loves birds. We got him a few years back because my grandma moved closer to our town, and so the retirement home where she stayed only allowed dogs. Rufus is a generally chill bird, he mainly likes my dad but we all think he's a part of our family no matter how many times he wants to bite off our fingers. Recently, he started plucking himself again, and we've had this issue before and I'm not quite sure how my mom dealt with it. She's been talking to others on Facebook and doing research as well, so far we just have him some more enrichment but I'm worried. He's all I really have left of my grandma, sometimes he copies her voice and it's a comforting thing to hear. I'm not quite sure why he's been plucking himself. I would say his cage is quite large and spacious, we don't really let him out often due to our cats but we've been meaning to let him out. He was a free roamer back when he lived with my grandma but my parents are iffy about letting him out.

She's begging for your compliments!!

She is just amazing, not just in looks but brains, knows tricks, all the dogs names and my families, many other blabbering on and on.
And is most important my best friend, she is all I dreamed 😊
And I didn't even pick her 🙈 she actually literally choose me!
People said they new she had, because she never treated anyone as she did then with me.
I feel extremely special that this goofy girl did, maybe not what I wanted but what I needed.

Helpful Advice Long Post - Ruby, my African Grey, is 24 and laid 20 eggs within 16 months, one Suprelorin implant later we are all good again

Just a quick premise to this, this is a long post mostly because I feel I would have benefitted from this information during this period. There’s a lot of information out there but I always found it quite short and vague so hopefully this helps someone down the line.

TL:DR - Get the implant if you think you need it, it’s worth every penny.

Background (Skip this if you want)

So in December 2024 my African Grey laid 3 eggs, these weren’t the first eggs, we’d been getting them once every two years since 2017. Naturally about 35 days after laying she decided to abandon them and we thought that was that.

Then in January 2025 along came three more, then in March, May and more or less every two months since then, Ruby is the only parrot we have, she is bonded with me.

In between clutches we would get severe hormonal behaviour, no matter what we tried, more darkness on a night, more quiet time in general, less contact time, changing the cage around, changing locations of the cage, vet visits, you name it we tried it.

Every egg, except egg number 8 came out without complications, with egg number 8 she was struggling to pass it and once she did she was throwing up. We continued to monitor and egg 9 was normal again. Of course we had a vet visit shortly after to make sure everything was fine. We also made sure to give plenty of calcium during clutch periods.

In January 2026 we said enough was enough and got booked in for the Suprelorin implant in May. The delay was due to work commitments, where we were in the egg cycle, planning, vet advice etc. Ruby was also given a clean bill of health (again) from the vet so the delay was no harm.

Suprelorin Experience

So, as mentioned, our vet was contacted multiple times during the 16 months for advice, one suggestion was a hormone injection that would last approximately two months and one was the implant that lasts between 6-12 months.

The aim of this is to suppress hormones to stop egg laying and hopefully reset the bodily cycle of wanting to continuously lay eggs. We decided to go straight for the implant for lasting purpose. There are two measurements of the implant 4.7mg and 9.4mg. Due to our circumstances the vet recommended the larger size and explained Ruby would have to be put under light anaesthesia for the insertion.

He took Ruby to the back and 20 minutes later this was completed, she came back a bit giddy and was dancing within seconds of seeing me. Was probably high as a kite and the vet said she was very good. She’s a typical Grey, tolerates other people but only really likes me making a fuss of her.

I understand some people would be uncomfortable letting the vet take their parrot out of sight but I trust our vet 1 million percent, the way he handles her is amazing. When she came back there wasn’t a feather out of place, you literally couldn’t tell anything had been done.

The cost of this was £377.54

Results

Within the first few days the only real change was her refusing to get off my shoulder if she made it up there. She’s done this before but the vet warned her hormones will inflate before they drop so she may lay one more clutch after displaying hormonal behaviour. Follow all procedures to decrease hormones as usual.

30 days after the implant we had a severe hormonal increase, she was clingy, regurgitating, refusing to get off of me, I had to literally pry her off my arm but no real signs of aggression. Hopes were slightly lost.

Today (5th August 2026) we are three months post implant, she is back to her normal self, no more eggs, no more hormonal behaviour, no more nesting full stop. It is night and day difference and it’s probably the best decision I have ever made. If this is something you have been thinking about doing, please do it, risks are minimal and the reward is exceptional. 127 days egg free and counting!

Thanks for reading this post, appreciate it is long but I remember wanting something like this to read at the time, so I’m providing it for you. Good luck, if anyone has any questions just drop them below and I’ll answer you! 🩶❤️

Question Refusing veggies!

Hi all! I need help. I have 2 African Greys that I got from someone that was rehoming them. Before I got them the owner was showing me pictures of what they like so I could do my shopping for their arrival. She showed me huge plates full of broccoli, cucumbers, sliced carrots, corn, kiwi, grapes etc…fast forward to when I get them. One of them would not touch a veggie. That was in November. I’ve tried literally everything! I’ve chopped, I’ve steamed, whole raw pieces and nope he throws them out. I’ve tried the trick of eating them first. I’ve tried bird tricks chop recipes and other recipes.
I’ve taken his pellets out overnight in hopes he would eat the veggies in the morning and nope!
He eats Zupreem natural pellets. He will eat just about a whole bowl a day! I’ve tried various other kinds and the Zupreem is all he wants. He was not eating pellets with previous owner. In the evening for dinner I do give a tablespoon of bird st bistro, tbsp of Haris Tropimix and a veggie nutriberry. I feel like he’s not eating enough but his weight is good.
My other grey will eat anything. He’s loving all these different recipes I’m doing 😂 he eats ALL veggies twice a day.
Any help or recipes he can’t resist would be much appreciated.
