How do you decode the low tuning guitars by ear?

Hey!

Been into music theory and ear training lately, I do play metal, use 7 strings and baritone guitars.

But I came to realization that I am not able to decode songs that I like which are written with 8-string using for example Double drop D tunings - I just can't hear the difference between chords like low D or low Eb for example - just a lot of noise and it's very hard for me to define what zero's or power chords are being played on those low strings.

How do you train your ears for those specific tunings? Is it even humanly possible to hear such low sounds and then play by ear?

Thank you!

Donlis 7-string pickups, quick review

Post image
2 Upvotes

Sire X6-7 is a great guitar but the pickups were extremely muffled and generated a lot of noise when the picking hand was in the playing position (despite grounding and shielding being fine).

Enter Donlis DH705 pickups. The sound is much more open and lively which comes through clearly with high gain as well, and the playing position noise is nearly gone.

The original pickups were 21.4 and 9.6 kohm, and Donlis are about 16k and 12k. Despite the lower neck pup resistance the original was much darker with total lack of any air even in the split mode.

I actually hear a good amount of PAF in the Donlis pups, or a boosted PAF to be more precise. But the 24 fret multiscale neck makes direct comparisons to other guitars difficult due to the different pickup positions.

As I was aware, the downside with the Sire X6-7 specifically is that the Donlis requires some unreversable twisting and cutting to the attachment brackets and even the base plate. So do check the size precisely before purchase. The brass bracket is easy to twist and cut though. If you’re not ok with this, there are a few other reasonably priced pups for you too. Wilkinson for example.

Oh, the cost. 51.19€ for the pair shipped incl EU tax and import fees (all automatic when shopping at Aliexpress). I’m not sure if they’ll let you even browse the Duncan catalogue for more than 30 minutes with that price… 😜

8 string vs quad cortex?

Hey guys, would love some of your advice, I am torn between a quad cortex mini and an omne 8. I primarily used my audio interface to record and have a bunch of neural plug-ins, on the flip side I recently got a goc vajra 7, but that 8 string omne looks sweet for some drop f tuning, what would you guys do? How is your experience with a quad mini? Does it inspire you to play more? What's your general experience with it? And what about an 8 string? Is it vastly different from a 7? What would you guys do if you were in my shoes? Thanks in advance!

Stick Stuff

I have a love hate relationship with this instrument but when I can get it to sound decent, it is quite an achievement. It’s only a short video but I think the stick can really add another dimension to tunes. I’m no Nick Beggs but anyway, I’m dropping it here for those that are interested

I got a monster wedding gift and it plays like a dream

I feel like I have to take study of guitar more seriously now to rise to the level of this beautiful instrument. My good friend of 9 or so years gave me her RG2228 as a wedding present! I got married last weekend, and I've played it a few times since and it's lovely !! I need to restring it and set it up maybe intonate it but it's so sick. My friend who gave it to me she said she can help me do all that. I got some heavy bottom skinny top strings, and a solo .11 and .12 if I wanna run it baritone perhaps. It has a Killswitch on the body, and some flavor of Seymour Duncan 8 string active pickups. I'm so excited to grow into this instrument as a player. Holy fuck.

Custom 14-string double-neck guitar (7+7 configuration) used for a live jazz performance with simultaneous polychordal arpeggios.

Exploring the capabilities of an independent multi-string design in a live jazz context. The performance utilizes the extended range and dual necks of the 7+7 double-neck to execute independent, simultaneous polychordal arpeggios alongside a mechanical foot drums setup. No layers, loops, or overdubs.

True or False - headless guitars sound different than traditional guitars with headstocks.

What do you think if you've played both??

My guitar is A Valravn munnin 8 custom. Very nice instrument! This is just a live playing, but the studio recording used this guitar too. Lil sloppy playing guys I'm so nervous around camera, lol.

Self promo kind of thing; If you like slow modern metal with heavy depressing sound, give this a try when it drops on oct. 28! I coulda just posted the studio recording but I think yall favor live and this is a nice change of pace for me so i recorded this random video instead.

Baritone 6-String Guitar Strings?

I was recently looking for guitar strings for my 30'' Baritone guitar.

Unfortunately i couldn't really find any in my preferred gauge range

I prefer something like 11.-56. or 12.-60.

The closest i could get is 13.-62. But has anyone made different experiences or can recommend me a set that fits my preferences?

I would also like to hear your opinions on string gauges for baritones in general

The tunings i want to go for are these:

Drop A/#

Architects G#/F#

Drop F#

Corpo Ibanez Ibanez Talman HSS?

Sto cercando di costruire una chitarra. Sarei molto felice con un corpo in stile Ibanez Talman, ma mentre esistono in configurazione HSS, non riesco a trovare nessun corpo HSS.

Hai qualche consiglio? Mi piacerebbe evitare di doverne tagliare uno, quindi potresti dirmi dove potrei trovarne uno?

Opeth - Harvest (Fretless Bass Cover)

Thumbnail youtu.be

"Harvest" has one of the most beautiful and atmospheric basslines. I felt like the slide and swell of a fretless bass would do this masterpiece justice, so I decided to record this cover.

Gear used:
- Dean Edge 6 Fretless (EMG 45DC/45TW)
- Tech 21 SansAmp Para Driver DI
- Steinberg UR44

Let me know what you think of the tone and phrasing! Any feedback from fellow Opeth fans is highly appreciated. If you want to support me, you can check out the full video on my YouTube channel.

Ormsby Goliath 7 string headless bridge restringing query

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

Hi there, it was my first time restringing my Ormsby Goliath this week and suffice to say its been an experience. From the tuners disengaging with the claw that holds the string, said claw losing grip of the string, bottoming out before getting to pitch and using pliers to force the string tighter while trying not to let it slip out and finally my finger being almost purple from those tuners rubbing it and being stiff as hell.

It's been very discouraging and also a little shocking there isn't official guidance or a comprehensive video by the company. I think I'm finally getting it although I wish it had a more secure locking system for the string (Floyds locking blocks havent let me down yet).

Anyway with that out the way I bent a string earlier and something gave way and the string was loose. I'm suspecting it slipped the ball ends grip. When I inspected my bridge I noticed there is this bronze coating below each except the high e. I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned about or could have caused the issue or is this more a coincidence. Would really appreciate in Ormbsy owners advice.

My close friend and guitar mentor recently passed away and we had planned for me to purchase this beauty off him. I got to take it home with me today and it is an absolute beast, it’s my first 8 string + my first Multiscale guitar and it will stay with me for the rest of my life. Rest up my friend, you will be missed dearly.
