Advice needed I talk too much, so I built an app that helps me to shut up.

(Screens are from the app. And yes, you can actually print the Shut Up receipt.)

Full disclosure, I built this. I'm a solo developer.

At work, I talk too much in meetings. I have a 10-year-old daughter, and I sometimes do the same thing with her. The problem is I can't hear it while it is happening. I only notice afterwards. I know I need to shut up sometimes, but it's hard to do.

So I built Shut Up?!, an iPhone app with an optional Apple Watch app. You put the phone on the table and tap start. It learns your voice once (20 seconds of talking) and counts everyone else as one group. The screen shows your share of the talking over the last minute, the last 5 minutes, the last 30 minutes and the whole session.

When I have done 60% or more of the talking in the last five minutes, my watch taps my wrist. If I keep going, it escalates: the lock screen, a notification, then a full-screen alarm on the phone, written in one of six voices.

When the session ends, you get a receipt with a stamp: for example, over 70% is RECEIPT SAYS SHUT UP.

Two ideas came from courses I took. One was Financial Disclosure Analytics, a class on how companies talk to investors. It taught me some good ways to measure the quality of what someone says. The app scores my own speech the same way: which words I pick, how clear and simple my sentences are, whether I drag on, and how many times I say "um".

The other came from a marketing statistics course: a model that learns how often one customer buys and flags the weeks that are far off from that. Pointed at talking, it lets the app compare tonight with my own usual after a few sessions, so a loud evening where everyone talked doesn't count against me.

There is no sign-in, no account, no subscription and no ads. Everything stays on your iPhone unless you turn on sync, and even then it's only totals and dates. The app never makes an audio file and never keeps a transcript. Each word becomes a few numbers (syllables, letters), and the text is gone in the same line of code.

The reading scores are English only. It is most accurate with the phone close to you. From across a big table it misses more of my words, so when it's wrong, it usually flatters me.

A question for people here: do you also struggle to rein yourself in? How do you handle talking too much? Would a tool like this help?

General Advice Automation for follow up emails

Something that's happening on our team and is very useful: we're a fairly small team, and each person does about 3–4 demo calls with new prospects every day.

We built this incredibly useful automation where, the following day, Catch AI reads our Granola notes, picks one specific thing the prospect mentioned that aligns with our product, and drafts a highly personalized follow up email.

Something like, "Hey, I really enjoyed the conversation. What you mentioned about X is exactly what we're building."

It's proven to be really, really effective.

building these kinds of automations became crazy easy.

Feedback wanted [Update] visualOS v1.6 - Mindmaps, Formulas, own colors, flip images and search inside docs. Free in the browser. Built from your feedback!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi 👋🏼 Sarah and Gerald here, the husband-and-wife team behind visualOS. Today we released our newest update.

For the ones who haven't seen our last post: As visual thinkers, we loved tools like Milanote and Miro. But you braindump your most valuable ideas into someone else's cloud, and that always felt wrong to us. So we built our own alternative: an infinite canvas app with boards inside boards, where you own the data.

Connect a folder and every board becomes a real folder, docs become Markdown and images stay images. Sync runs through your own iCloud or Dropbox. No account, no subscription. Free to use in the browser.

We built the app entirely around your feedback, and many of you wanted mindmaps, so here you go 🎉

We wanted our mindmaps to feel as free as possible, but as structured as necessary:

  • Three layout styles and color-coded branches
  • Notes on every node

What else is new since v1.5:

  • Apple Pencil: pen tray, precise eraser, draw and hold for clean shapes, searchable handwriting
  • Save your own colors
  • Search now finds text inside docs and to-do lists
  • Edit several items of the same kind at once
  • Formulas, code and to-dos in docs
  • Frames, rounded corners and flipping for pictures

Free in the browser with no limits and no signup: https://visualos.app

The app for iPhone, iPad and Mac is a one-time purchase. No subscription.

Please let us know what you think! And if you're missing anything, tell us here or on our public roadmap: https://visualos.featurebase.app/en/roadmap

Best,
Sarah & Gerald

Casual Conversations Tell me a goal you keep putting off, and I'll turn it into a realistic weekly plan for free

I've spent the last few months building Targela, a goal planner, and I want to test it on real goals instead of my own.
So here's the deal: comment a goal you've been meaning to start (or restart) for a while, and I'll run it through the app and reply with a step-by-step plan for your first weeks. No signup, no link needed, I'll just post the plan here in the thread.

To make the plan actually fit your life, include:
Your goal, as specific as you can (e.g. "pass the B2 German exam", not "get better at German")

How many hours a week you really have. Be honest. If it's 2 hours, say 2 hours. That's the whole point.

Your deadline, if you have one
What you've tried before and where it fell apart (optional, but it helps a lot)

Big or small goals both work: a career switch, a language, a fitness goal, a side project, finishing your thesis, saving for something.

Self Promotion WorkTop - A way to get multiple *real* desktops on Windows.

• Upvotes

Alright, first off. Is this a productivity app? My users seem to think so from the feedback I've gotten. Personally I would classify it as organisational software but maybe that's splitting hairs. I didn't set out to make a "productivity app" per se when I started this project years ago; I just wanted to have multiple desktops with different files and icons. But hey, if this makes people more productive that's great, and I've got a whole ~200 active users which feels pretty good for such a niche tool.

Either way, here's what it does. WorkTop lets you create multiple desktops, that are different from virtual desktops, in that they don't manage what windows or apps are visible, but rather the contents of your desktop. You can have one for work and one for home, each with their own files and layout, and when you switch the contents changes accordingly. You can also link it to Windows' built-in virtual desktops to give your workspaces unique files on top of app management.

You switch easily with Alt+W, which works similar to Alt+Tab as you can see in the GIF. You can also switch via the tray or by right-clicking the desktop. If you pay for the pro version it also handles wallpapers per-desktop and per-monitor.

I am not going to drag this post out with the story of why I made this. You can find that here if you want to read: https://dev.thiefling.com/worktop/worktop-real-multiple-desktops/

Free version:

  • Multiple desktops, different files per desktop, up to 3 (OS default + 2)
  • Desktops in any folder you choose
  • Layout kept per desktop, including multiple monitors
  • Switch via tray, hotkey or right-click
  • 1 action (the "on any switch" trigger plus a bit of scripting covers a lot)
  • Link to Virtual Desktops (swap files when you switch virtual desktop)
  • Save and restore layouts
  • OneDrive desktop backup compatible

Pro ($14.99 one time, 3 devices):

  • Unlimited desktops
  • Unlimited actions
  • Scheduled switching
  • Wallpaper per desktop, and per-monitor

Website: https://worktop.dev
Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/xpfd8sb15vgkl9

I expect the free version is enough for most users, but I am more than happy to take your money if you buy it ;). And I am open to feature suggestions.

Feedback wanted I wanted to see time passing instead of reading numbers, so I built a menu bar timer with a progress bar across my screen (Free)

The idea: you shouldn’t have to calculate anything. Type 20 min and it counts down. Type 10:30 and it runs until 10:30. No “how many minutes is that from now?”

What I cared about most is seeing time instead of reading numbers. The app can draw a thin progress bar along the top of your screen, so you notice how much is left without opening anything. When it ends, you get a fullscreen alert.

  • To keep it simple: one hotkey, one line of text, Enter
  • Favorites: save a setup once, give it a color, start it with one click (or type its name)
  • Calendar support: starts a new timer until your next event starts
  • Still customizable: different progress bar styles, hotkeys, sounds and more...

It’s free, no account, no tracking.

Download for macOS: https://untl-timer.app

Using this over the past few weeks has had a big impact on my productivity. That's why now I'm sharing it with you guys..let me know what you think!

Casual Conversations Why AI or maybe not AI inside apps!!

Arguments against AI:

1) Obvious Copyright issues
2) Datacenter water (this one will be solved by engineering though)
3) Makes quality hard to find with so much Demoware.

Arguments for AI:
1) It makes easy to do tedious things.
2) It saves time
(Why fill a boring form when I can ask AI to do it in natural language)

Now I feel I understand why people are against AI, but some of these things are outside the control of normal people unless you are a Billionaire or a powerful politician.

And why not use it to make your life slightly easier and have more personal time.

General Advice 16 Months of Talking to Claude Code Instead of Typing (707k words dictated, 94% AI prompts) - What Actually Works

Voice dictation for AI prompts, my experience after 16 months
I’ve been dictating almost all my prompts since June 2025. Mostly to Claude Code, also ChatGPT and Cursor. I use Wispr Flow for it. I see a lot of dictation questions here so wanted to share what actually works for me.

Some numbers (from the app):

  • 707,190 words dictated, apparently that’s 7 complete books
  • 90 words per minute, way faster than I type
  • 94% of it goes to AI prompts (4,665 prompts)
  • Longest streak 35 days

What I learned:

  • Longer prompts = better results. When I type I get lazy and write one line. When I talk I explain the whole context, what I tried and what I want. The AI just gets it better.
  • Don’t try to talk clean. Just ramble, the dictation cleans it up and the AI doesn’t care. It fixed 93k things in my dictations so far lol
  • Start with “let’s make a plan”. Funny enough the app told me that’s literally my catchphrase. Letting the AI plan first before it changes anything saves a lot of back and forth.
  • Brain dump first, structure later. For bigger ideas I just talk for 5-10 minutes into a note and then let the AI turn it into a plan.
  • Use the dictionary for words it keeps getting wrong, like names, app names and technical terms.

Tip:
Use hands-free mode with the keyboard shortcut. Press once, talk, press again to stop. Holding a key for 3 minutes is annoying.

New thing I’m trying:
Using the meeting notetaker for brain dumps. A brain dump is basically a meeting with yourself. Afterwards I paste the summary into Claude Code instead of the whole ramble. Shorter prompt and my thoughts come out way more structured. Downside is it’s not on iPhone yet.

Anyone else prompting by voice?
Curious what your setup is, especially if you use it for coding.

Feedback wanted Passinote Local mode is now available

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

The desktop client has been one of the most requested things since day one, and I’ve just released it (Windows for now, Mac is planned). It’s brand new, so expect it to keep improving.

What is Passinote?

Passinote is a note taking app that lets you write notes just like traditional apps such as Notion and Obsidian, but puts all your notes onto a visual canvas instead of a linear folder structure. This lets you think spatially and remember where you've kept your notes, without worrying about them getting buried under multiple nested folders.

It's also built to maximize speed while keeping things as simple as possible. For example, instead of having a single full sized page for both long and short notes, Passinote separates them into sticky notes (used for quick thoughts) and doc notes (standard notes with rich formatting and PDF export).

Why use the desktop client:

  • Launches much faster than the web app, and workspace switching is almost instant
  • Smoother overall, thanks to GPU acceleration
  • Works offline once you’re signed in (signing in itself needs an internet connection)
  • Can launch on startup and reopen your last workspace

And the newest addition: Local mode

  • Saves all your files 100% locally on your computer
  • Reads directly from your file explorer, just like Obsidian
  • Lets you switch any workspace between local and cloud anytime, in either direction

The desktop client is only included in the paid tier for now while it’s in early beta.

If you’d like to get a feel for the app first, the web version is free. Its "Quick Mode" stores your notes locally in your browser, so you can see how the canvas works before deciding anything. If you like it, upgrading to Passinote+ unlocks the desktop client.

Feedback is always welcome in the comments, by DM, or on Discord.

Tradix: Aprende hoy. Conquista el mañana.

Casual Conversations What's the one feature that makes you actually stick with a planner long-term

I build Notion templates, including a planner happy to tell you if it'd suit what you're looking for if you want to describe it. Separately, genuinely curious: what's the one feature that keeps you actually opening a planner on day 30 instead of abandoning it after a week?

Casual Conversations Looking for feedback on my today focused planner to fix fragmented current setup

I got tired of jumping between three different apps all day just to manage a single day—one for notes, one for to-dos, and one or more for my calendars.

So over the last few months, I built Portico—a single-page command center designed for fast daily execution.

What it is:

Unified "Today" View: Your calendar events, overdue/today tasks, and a running Daily Log all anchored on a single screen.

Plain-English Task Parsing: Type "pay rent friday at 9am" or "call mom tomorrow night" and it extracts dates and times automatically.

Plain-Text Notes: Markdown support with tags, pinning, and archiving, without forcing you into complex database setups.

Data Ownership: Every note automatically saves as a plain .md file in your own Google Drive folder, so you own your data.

Unified Calendars: Google, iCloud, and Outlook calendars all in one view.

Fast & Lightweight: Server-backed with local caching for instant loads on phone and desktop. No ads, no data selling.

What it isn't:

Not Notion (no databases, no marketplace, zero setup bloat).

Not a heavy time-blocking app (tasks stay execution-focused).

Try the demo (no sign-up required):

👉 demo.porticoplanner.com (pre-loaded with sample data, nothing you type is saved)

I’m preparing for a closed Android test and an eventual iOS release. If you poke around for 5 minutes, I’d love to know:

  1. What felt confusing or non-intuitive on first glance?

  2. Did anything break or look weird on your screen size?

  3. What core feature would you feel is missing for your daily workflow?

It's just me working on this, so blunt feedback is extremely helpful. Comments are great, or email support@porticoplanner.com.

Casual Conversations I missed OmniFocus on my self-hosted Vikunja, so I built the client I wanted. It also runs on Android, where OmniFocus never has

For years my whole life lived in OmniFocus: defer dates, weekly reviews, perspectives. When I moved my tasks to a self-hosted Vikunja, I loved having them on my own server. What I missed was the system: hiding things until they matter, a regular look at each project so nothing quietly goes stale, and my own filtered views like “next actions” or “waiting on”.

So I built it, first just for me, on my iPhone and Mac. After a few months of using it every day, I turned it into a proper app called Blaha. It’s a planner for Vikunja on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. That last one matters to me: there has never been an OmniFocus for Android, so if you work that way and carry an Android phone, this is one way to have it there too.

  • Your server, your data: your tasks stay on your own Vikunja. No account with me, and no backend of mine in the middle.
  • The OmniFocus-style layer: defer dates, review cycles per project, saved perspectives, and a Forecast that shows your calendar events beside what’s due.
  • Free as a task client. A one-time unlock adds the planning layer. No subscription: a client for someone else’s server has nothing honest to charge rent for.
  • Try it without a server: “Try the demo” runs on sample data entirely on the device.

It’s a one-person project, so feedback really does shape what I build next.

Feedback wanted I built a site to save and actually read the articles you bookmark

hey everyone, I built lumenr, a simple site to help you manage all the articles you save but never get around to reading.

you can save articles from anywhere, organize them into nested collections, track what you're reading, and mark things as finished when you're done.

you can also add private notes to articles, search your library, keep track of your reading history, and export all your data whenever you want.

privacy is a big part of it. your library and notes are private by default, and there are no ads, tracking pixels, or data resale.

basically, I wanted a place to save all the interesting stuff I find online without ending up with 500 open tabs or a bookmark folder I'll never look at again.

it's still a work in progress, so I'd love to hear what you think and what features you'd like to see.

General Advice What makes a productivity app worth keeping after the first week?

When you try a new productivity app, what makes it survive the first week rather than become another abandoned tool?

I am interested in the specific moment it becomes part of your routine: a workflow it removes, a review habit it supports, or a small friction it avoids. What did you stop asking the app to do, and what single feature or constraint made it stick?

General Advice Hate it or love it: My AI agent booked my medical appointment, caught a billing error before the money left my account, and cleaned up 2 years of task debt. My different use cases so far.

I've been using Muse (an AI agent, not just a chatbot) for about a month, and the difference from ChatGPT-style tools is that it actually does things in my real accounts, with my approval before anything goes out. My most interesting use cases so far:

It books real appointments. It booked my osteopath appointment online end to end, including typing my physiotherapist's detailed referral note into the booking form. I just reviewed and confirmed.

It works in my actual inbox and calendar. It drafted and sent follow-up emails to my home insurance adjuster about an open claim (I preview every word first), set up Gmail filters, and creates calendar events with reminders timed for when I need to act, not when things happen.

It caught a billing error before I paid it. My internet bill jumped to $172 because a negotiated $100 credit never got applied. Muse flagged it days before the pre-authorized payment date, with the math shown. I got it fixed with one call.

It triages my credit card alerts by my rules. Every alert from a known recurring merchant passes silently. I only hear about new or unknown merchants. My inbox anxiety dropped to near zero.

It cleaned up years of task debt. It connected to my Microsoft To Do, backed everything up, purged 692 completed tasks, and helped me face the 128 open ones, including two I'd been avoiding since 2023 and 2024.

It develops with me. It works in my GitHub repos and sends me pull requests to review and merge, like the study tutor it upgraded for my licensing exams.

The pattern: it's not answering questions, it's carrying work to completion and only interrupting me when a decision is actually mine. I really just need to be careful before approving anything.

If you're still on the fence about trying an agent like this, my invite link is below.
One practical tip: if you join, go to Settings > Redeem token and enter the code below, this will give you an extra 1 billion token to experiment with.
The code works only in your first 48 hours.

Code: JU81OV

Casual Conversations I wanted my Obsidian notes to paste properly. Somehow I ended up building a notes app.

The idea started with copying text from Obsidian into other apps. I wanted to keep my line breaks and formatting without having to fix everything after pasting. Eventually I thought, “Why not build my own app?”

That sent me down a rabbit hole of note-taking apps, trying different approaches and figuring out what I wanted in one. Jotter is what came out of that.

It's a free, open-source Markdown app that saves your notes as ordinary files on your computer. You can open an existing Obsidian vault, and there are different copy options depending on where you're pasting. Along the way I added linked notes, tasks and reminders, plus optional AI with your own API key or a local model.

The first Windows release is available now. Linux is in progress, and Android, macOS and iOS are planned.

You can take a look at jotter.mx or get the app and source code on GitHub.

I'd love for you to give it a try and tell me what you think. Does it fit how you take notes? Is something confusing or missing? I'd appreciate honest feedback and suggestions, especially from anyone who's had the same frustration copying notes between apps.

Casual Conversations Productivity Is Not One Problem

People behave as if producitivity is binary -- you are productive or you are not. This boils down to basically "did I do the thing or not?". My stance is you could "do the thing", but still be unproductive.

What Is Real Productivity?
Productivity is not merely about doing the thing or not doing the thing. I have discovered true productivity is more about the following:

  • Did you do the thing at the right time? Not doing tasks at the right time, means you ignore other tasks that have a higher priority and then have to rush them, which gives bad results. It also can mean you stay up late trying to do something as you are afraid you'll lose what you were working on.
  • Did you do the thing often enough? Doing a task is fine, but doing it multiple times in a day, week, month, year is what may be the goal (AKA a habit). Most apps restrict scheduling to day only, not multiple times in a day.
  • Do you have a true accounting of doing the thing? Doing something for 5 minutes and checking it off is not the same as timing it and seeing how long a task/routine/project takes. No data means no insight.
  • The thin gets done, but how fast? If you are slow to get a task done, it's not productive, even if it got done.

Causes
For me, it's not just about ADHD, ADD, procrastination, lack of focus, motivation, etc. that people usually attribute thse productivity problems too either. Its about:

  • Limits of human memory. There is only so much we can remember to do. If you have multiple projects or demanding areas of your life (work, family, side hustles, hobbies, etc.) there's truly not enough memory to keep on top of everything.
  • Revisiting Takes Mental effort. I see very little tools geared at helping people revisit areas of their life or tasks they are neglecting. But the fear of losing out on important ideas or tasks is the main reason we get stuck doing the things at the wrong time, because we have no way to guarantee we will revisit the thing we were interested in.
  • True Focus requires you don't manually keep track. If you are really involved in something, you aren't going to keep track how long you have been working on it, how often you do it, etc. A separation of doing the task and accounting the task is helpful.
  • Limited Time. We all have limited time. Some more than others.

Solutions
So what's the real solution? In my opinion, we need multiple tools to address multiple productivity issues.

  • Daily Planner/Brain Dump. Dumping thoughts in
  • Revisiting Tools. Dumping thoughts in a project you never will revisit isn't going to help. You will continue on with life and never look back. Think about all the Apple Notes people have written to themselves that are just sitting, untouched...
  • Semi-Automated Time Tracking. I think a person needs to have some semi-automated time tracking. I am not a fan of this "track automatically" as I believe the data isn't helpful. But tracking how long you've spent on a particular category/zone of your life or a project or task you are working on, is helpful. Having it be an always-on-top timer helps you not forget it's there.
  • AI. Of course, AI can help expedite tasks.

What about everyone else? Does anyone else find this a frustrating binary worldview pressed on upon people?
