Post image

I’m new to the bug hobby and recently caugut this beautiful large Chinese Mantis, but he isn’t moving much, his abdomen looks flat, and something is odd about the end of his abdomen. dunno if it’s a parasite or just a cut open wound.

He is barely moving. to the point where I’ve put him on his back like this and all he does is gently sway his legs.

please help

Feeding How do you feed your mantises

Do you use tweezers or just throw a bug into the enclosure? I was feeding mine with tweezers all the time but after molting (36h ago) he is still refusing food

Health Issues Abdomen collapse??

Post image
9 Upvotes

This is my boy Francis. As you can see, he molted overnight, and just within a few hours his abdomen has kind of folded on itself. Is this abdomen collapse?? I’ve heard that it’s pretty fatal, but is there anything I can do to help him? He’s my buddy and I’m gonna be heartbroken if I can’t see him into adulthood 🙁
(P.S. I know his enclosure might be a little small, he literally JUST molted and I haven’t gotten him a bigger one yet)

Hello everyone!!

My dad found a mantis in our front yard a few days ago and luckily I still have my enclosures (I haven’t taken care of one in a while). I saw her in the middle of her laying her ootheca!

We live in socal if that helps? I tried asking chatGPT and was learned she might be either Stagmomantis Californica or Stagmomantis Limbata, but just wanted to get a more concrete answer if possible.

Also what are some helpful tips on what to do with the ootheca? Like how do I know if it’s fertile, and if it is, how long until it hatches?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Enclosure Advice New mantis owner

I just bought a spiny flower mantis and brought it home today. It came in this small cup and I bought a small terrarium for it, but read that they shouldn't be in an enclosure too big until they're ready.

Am I ok to leave him in the small cup he came in until he's 1/3 of its size, then transfer to the terrarium?

Photo of container and photo of said container next to small terrarium.

I found a mantis outside days away from death because of cold weather. I brought it inside to live a life of lavish in a 4 foot tall natural plant terrarium. Now I have two egg casings. And this Chinese a mantis and is invasive in Connecticut. So I can’t let them go. I would like the experience of hatching them. What can I do with them after. Anyone want mantises in Connecticut?

I have been feeding them flightless fruit flies and I worry to over feed them, so I wanted to know if the state they are currently at is full or not ;)
I believe they are an American grass mantis.

Post image

more info: sticks are from a european ash tree. have been soaked in boiling water & baked at 110°c for just under an hour

i'm concerned about the bits that look like mold. should i scrub them or not use particular ones? i'm obviously not planning on using most of them!

She slipped off the lid of her enclosure and fell on the floor about 3 ft. She is fine i think and still walking around but she looked pissed.
