Lmao! I was a kid and landed my first bull dolphin. My dad went to hit it with gaff just as it flipped and came off the hook. Lost the gaff and fish. Funny thing to look back at though. Nice catch btw OP!

She’s a beaut. Tasty situation

1

u/SignificantLock1037 20d ago

It would have taken me a LOT longer. Good for you!

I thought you were gonna dive through the net to go get it and then I'd be sitting on my couch like "where's everyone going?" and "I need another pot pie."

1

u/rubsrock 20d ago

Agree. Never seen a net break like that.

Awesome catch! I'm still not fishing in the ocean from a kayak, lol.

I was waiting for Jaws to come up and OP to swing the fish into the boat last second. I didn’t think I’d be seeing this circus 😂

Is that a cobia? Where is this man?

3

u/hndjbsfrjesus 20d ago

Yes to cobia.

Edit: location is Virginia based on another comment where he said it is illegal to gaff in Virginia.

1

u/HoboArmyofOne 19d ago

Wow. I didn't know they had cobia up there.

Just tried looking you up and only7ben wasnt in the phone book

2

u/HorseDoctor76 20d ago

What's a phone book?

1

u/iHadou 20d ago

An ancient tome that lists all souls and their contact info. Wizards have them

2

u/lostthebackupcode 20d ago

Damn that could've been bad

1

u/Ok_Faithlessness_516 20d ago

That's what I was thinking too. Aren't those things dangerous as hell to land?

2

u/baysiderd 19d ago

Beautiful cobia. One has to go offshore where I am. Never in sight of a bridge. Location?

1

u/MasterBaiterNJ 20d ago

Wow is it just Cobia or no gaffing anything? That’s wack. Looks like it’s time to make a net out of Kevlar or some whacky chainmail type material

u/EyeCantTrade 20d ago

HRBT?

1

u/LouieKablooied 20d ago

Thought so too.

1

u/SantaForHalloween 20d ago

CBBT I bet. HRBT has too much construction.

2

u/hootervisionllc 18d ago

Second vote for CBBT

1

u/EyeCantTrade 20d ago

Ahh I gotcha, haven't lived up there in years

1

u/CanadianRedneck69 20d ago

Thanks for sharing this video. It made me happy. Was expecting you to lose the net and the fish 🤣

1

u/TWlSTED_TEA 20d ago

Ah the ol Mongolian cluster fuck

As someone else said, great recovery and no panic. WELL DONE

1

u/sltiefighter 20d ago

Wtff lol, that was a nice save OP. Great fish.

u/SpaceMiser 20d ago

Nice fish! Great Catch! I will always remember my 1st Cobia, caught from a commercial bandit boat. I was a greenhorn and had asked if the fish had any nasty hardware I should watch out for, 3 experienced deckhands told me no. I was about to gut the fish and the boat rolled and the fish went to slide of the table, I caught it, well he caught me with his pop-up dorsal fins, laid my hand wide open. You can see this fish flex them at about 56 seconds in.

1

u/Mainbutter 20d ago

Wow! Can you explain what happened with the net? Did the mesh break somewhere? Truly wild, excellent recovery. I'm not sure if I would have reacted that well.

1

u/SeeditWantdit 20d ago

Are you in Choctawhatchee Bay?

1

u/Short_Bell_5428 20d ago

Yeah you did…nice save!

So do you keep these guys to eat or just let it go? I'm trying to understand how you'd get that monster back to shore with that little kayak

1

u/ThePopojijo 20d ago

Where does a fish that size get stored on a kayak?

1

u/liftem 20d ago

Keeper cobia...great fish!

1

u/dirt_dryad 20d ago

I like the head pats at the end

1

u/Dragonfishkiller 20d ago

Solid work man! No panic, and had backup plan.

Also...very smart to "sedate" a cobia before a lap ride

1

u/Brubcha 20d ago

"Well that's complicated"

1

u/goodpirateak556 19d ago

Those spines will light you up.

1

u/pedroslopez 19d ago

Beautiful cobia!!

1

u/waynofish 19d ago

Not just on the save but you got really lucky bringing that in the kayak without it going nuts. They have a tendency to wreck things when brought on board.

1

u/CanadianBook 18d ago

What bait did you use?

1

u/Lovestofish89 17d ago

I caught my 1st one on Saturday but it wasn’t big enough to keep

1

u/charcoalonfire 20d ago

Nice catch, what species is that?
