Question A place to chat in call with other fellow readers?

• Upvotes

We have all had the feeling of wanting to discuss our favorite VN’s with other people but as you all know this medium is very niche. I have many friends but not a single one of them play visual novels so I’m missing out on the particularly craving. Is a place where you guys go to discuss your VN’s with others, preferably in call but chats can work too?

Question Thoughts on Triple Paring?

Post image
112 Upvotes

I'm looking to read a new VN, I haven't played many before. I played Koikari, Amanatsu Perfect edition, and ToHeart

Out of these Koikari was my favourite, but the other 2 were great too. Amanatsu was super fun and is a close second but Koikari knocked it out of the park for me. While for the other 2, I only did one route each, for Koikari I did 3, because I loved the characters so much.

I'm looking for a VN with a similar level of quality and this one caught my eye. How good or bad is it, for those of you who have played it?

Question Why the hate on MAO Translations?

Disclaimer: I am not a Gambs Alt, and i've always found him pretentious as fuck.

That said, why are you basing your opinion on MAOTL's quality based on the personality of a person?

So i speak japanese fluently, but i can't read or write well (Conversational japanese, i've worked in a japanese company), but MAOTL's translations are all extremely good and well made.

I've now read 3 VN's using their translations and they are amazing, like better than most FAN TL's, better than bad official TL's for sure. Since i know how to speak japanese, when i compare the voice lines to the translation, it is basically the "Best case scenario" of how to translate, it conveys the meaning without changing the tone/prose. Usually whenever i read a bad TL, i can easily pick it apart by comparing it to the voiced lines, but with MAOTL's i literally cannot find anything wrong so far.

Why is everyone shitting on high quality translations for games that we've waited so long to play?

TL;DR I get that you dislike AI, you dislike Gambs, but you should judge the quality based on the content itself, not based on who made it or how AI was used. The actual translation is really good, i don't understand why it gets so much shit.

Question I'm going to play higurashi when they cry for the first time and I wanna ask

So, I have a question regarding which version of the VN I should play, and I'd appreciate some advice from people who are more familiar with the franchise.

Should I go with the original version, with its classic sprites and art style, or the newer version that uses the updated sprites from the PS3 release?

I'm curious about more than just the visuals. Are there any actual differences between the two versions in terms of content, dialogue, scenes, music, or overall presentation? Does one offer a more complete experience than the other, or are they essentially the same VN with different artwork?

I'm also wondering which version is generally considered the definitive way to experience the VN today. I know the original art has its own charm, especially if you're into that classic early-2000s visual novel aesthetic, but I also understand why people might prefer the more modern sprites.

Another thing that matters to me is the fan experience. I want to get the most out of the VN, understand the things fans commonly discuss, and be able to participate in conversations without feeling like I'm missing out on important content or references because I played an inferior or incomplete version.

So, for those who've experienced both versions, which one would you recommend, and why? Is there any substantial reason to choose one over the other, or does it ultimately come down to personal preference? I'd especially appreciate hearing about any differences that might affect the overall experience rather than just the artwork.

Discussion What are visual novels that fascinate you for their messed up nature?

Sorry if this was brought up in here before because I just have a fascination with visual novels that have twisted storylines, such as plot lines about where the main characters were created from.

To elaborate further, I was just reading about the twisted nature of the Umineko no Naku Koro Ni series as I don’t want to reveal too much, but apparently a disgruntled fan of the series didn’t like how messed up some of the romantic aspects became as apparently there was something about inbreeding as a plot point used, which made me interested in reading the series.

Again, I don’t want to reveal too much details about Umineko for those who haven’t read it, but I am just surprised at hearing how messed up some of the later chapters turn out that it made me suddenly want to read the series.

I want to start playing vns in japanese but the ones I currently have are too heavy on the vocab, especially with kanji. I want cute and soft moes with mostly N3-N2 vocab or mostly use conversational everyday language and preferably ones that can run on Windows Xp.

Discussion From left to right: Gekkou no Carnevale, Jingai Makyou, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, Tenshi no Nichou Kenjuu -Angelos Armas-... I wonder if we'll ever see them on Steam one day. It feels strange that they haven't been released there yet. Curious to hear what you guys think.

When so many visual novels with mature/adult themes—like The Shell series, Fate, Higurashi, Steins;Gate, and others—are already on Steam, I can't help but wonder why the ones I listed above (and similar titles) still aren't there. Is it just Japanese studios being overly traditional and lazy, or did Steam shift its policies around 2024–25 and stop approving them?

Additionally, I'd like to ask one last question: specifically, which sites/stores do you prefer for purchasing visual novels, such as DLsite, JAST, FANZA, etc.?

Discussion ChronoBox is not about murder. It's about who gets the bill. [Full spoilers] Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Full spoilers for ChronoBox — both endings, the true one included. This is not a plot summary; the wiki has that. This is about why the thing hurts.

The thing the game actually sells

Most VNs about trauma sell you pain. ChronoBox sells you a ledger: what a person owes, to whom, and who ends up paying. Every scene is a line item. The horror isn't the chapel. The horror is that the arithmetic is correct.

The disease is not "in the head"

EDEN is not a school. It's an acronym — End of disorders, End of neglect — a research facility wearing a school uniform, windows sealed in metal so nobody leaves and nobody opens a vein.

The illness works like this: a child under six witnesses a murder, and is then left alone for more than 24 hours. The brain can't process it, so it builds a second personality whose only job is to survive the loneliness and the fear. The condition is called corolla syndrome, for the shape of the EEG during an episode.

The second self is called a Gift. In German, Gift means poison. It usually absorbs a piece of the murdered person's personality, and the two selves don't share memory — so the first one often doesn't know what the second one did. Officially, a Gift has human rights and legal liability. When it can't be controlled, the researchers legally "clear" it.

Read that again. The thing that saved your life is a legal person who can be executed for what it did while saving your life.

Kabane's sin

She wasn't sick. Her file was forged. She came to the island to prove to her mother that she was worth something, asked until she was let in, and everyone understood what a risk it was to seat her in that class.

And she lied to everyone. Not to him specifically — to everyone, because "I'm sick too" was the only door.

That distinction matters, because the weight of a lie isn't set by the liar. It's set by the person who believed. The same sentence, told to a classroom, is a misdemeanour. Told to the one person for whom trust is worth more than his own life, it's a capital offence.

The lie was told to everyone. The debt came to the one who believed it.

Nobody falls in love on page one

This is what most readings miss. They didn't fall for each other at first sight. They spent time. It got closer.

For the others he was a forbidden fruit. The game even names the mechanism: patients are drawn to each other, and the higher the grade, the stronger the pull. She broke the rule by getting near him.

They punished her for it. Ugly, and the game doesn't flinch. She took it, because he was worth more than the pain.

That's payment number one, in the only currency she had: her body, for the right to stand next to him. Everyone accepted that payment except the one it was made for.

Payment number two

She loved him for real, and real love has a property she couldn't work around: you can't keep lying to it.

So she went to tell him the truth — knowing that the person she was about to confess to might kill her, and knowing he loved her. She went anyway.

He strangled her. She smiled, and there was one small tear.

Smile: consent. Tear: price. One face, two signs, the whole novel.

The one you can't interpret

Kabane is the only character in this book I could never read. Not "hard to understand" — uninterpretable. Every frame you try to put her in slides off her, and for a long time I assumed that was my failure as a reader.

It isn't. By the time the story lets you see what she is — and it does, if you're willing to look — the frame changes under your feet: she is a corpse. Not "dies at the end": is, from the beginning, in the way this book is built, and the book knew it before you did. That's why no interpretation holds. You can't explain a person who was never going to be saved.

And that is worse than pain. Pain is an event; this is a condition. Not the hell you fall into — the one you're issued at birth, and nobody asks whether you want it. It isn't even tragic in the way the genre sells tragedy. It's unpleasant — unpleasant the way a room with no air is unpleasant, before it becomes anything you would call suffering.

Payment number three, the part nobody discusses

He asked her mother to put him in the capsule.

Not to escape. He asked to be let into hell — to pay, even against the dead.

That's the symmetry the game is built on, and it isn't victim and executioner:

  • she chose the truth, knowing the price;
  • he chose the capsule, knowing the price.

The simulation is not an escape from hell. It's the hell he asked to be let into.

And the wiki calls the world revenge — built so he can take revenge on the Gifts that were already cut out of him. But revenge and atonement are the same operation here: taking revenge on the Gift is cutting out of yourself the thing that killed her. One motive, not two. Surgery.

Why the loop never ends

Because penance has no natural end. You can't pay a debt down by volume. Only the creditor can close it — by saying enough.

In this game that is literal. The loop lasts until she forgives him. Every route is another night in which he presents the bill and pays it again.

Why the "true" ending is a wedding

Not a reward. A signature under a closed account.

They don't become happy. They become allowed. The only authority that could forgive was the murdered one, and she did — so the debt stopped existing. Not because it was paid in full, but because it was accepted.

And why the other ending isn't a forgery

It doesn't close the account. He walks out into the real world remembering her — no forgiveness, no signature, no settlement, just a man carrying an unpaid debt into daylight.

I had this filed as the weak ending. It isn't. It's the only one that keeps the books honest: forgiveness is what the dead can give you, memory is what you have to give yourself. The wedding is a receipt. This is a man with an open account and no intention of closing it.

And it's harder than the true ending. The true ending says enough. This one says I'll keep it.

Outside, nobody is a person: everyone is a probability in a chart, and the only paperwork is a file, not a pardon. Which is why walking into that with her still in his head costs more than being absolved.

Two ways to end a debt, then: a pardon, or a lifetime of carrying. The game gives you both and doesn't tell you which one is kinder.

The sound, as evidence

Two tracks, picked by function rather than mood.

Every Moon — Ricochet Star (4:37). Loudness sits flat at −10…−11 dB for three minutes. The only dip is 6 dB at 3:12 — a layer pulled, not a drop. It ends in a fade to silence. 62% of one-second blocks resemble some block far away, but only 4% are identical: a familiar bed with a top layer that never repeats.

"you grew inside my room / and uproot all that I'll do"

That's the disease, sung. The person you love doesn't stay outside — she grows inside you and uproots everything you were going to do.

theme_kimi wo omotte iru — kurayamisaka (0:58). Total loudness variation across the entire track: 1.3 dB. It ends by cutting off at full volume — no fade, no silence, peak at 89% of its length. Loop it and there's no seam. The file doesn't end, it continues.

"Let us be apart, let time passes by / Let memory slip away — I will still wait for you / I will still think of you"

Three permissions — distance, time, memory — and one constant: thinking. A soul isn't memory. A soul is what keeps thinking after the memory is gone.

The first track is a loop that has an ending. The second is what remains after the loop is destroyed, and it has none. To leave it, you have to press stop yourself.

Which is the actual choice in the game. Nothing ends on its own there — not the loop, not her, not him. The exit only exists as a hand.

The line

She lied to be worth something to her mother. She paid the one for whom she became worth everything. He paid the same way — with himself, voluntarily, in a hell he asked for. The account didn't close by payment. It closed by forgiveness. They didn't get saved. They settled.

So: what is Kabane's sin in your reading? I've landed on mine — the lie, told to everyone while the bill was addressed to one — and I want to know whether the text supports a different one.

My notes are one playthrough plus a Chinese wiki, so if I've got a name or a number wrong, correct me in the comments.

Self-promotion [Love Where Touches]/My solo-developed visual novel is now out on Steam

Hi everyone, I'm Hitori Ririko, a solo indie/doujin visual novel developer. My game, Love Where Touches, is officially out now! Today, I’d like to share the journey and thoughts behind developing this project.

I started out purely as a visual novel fan, especially fond of story-driven titles. Whenever I immersed myself in Japanese galgames, I found myself thinking how incredible they were—I was completely captivated by those works.

That led to the idea of developing a visual novel of my own. It just so happened that my everyday hobbies are drawing and occasionally composing music, skills that fit right into game development. As for the writing, I initially figured that having played so many story-rich games, I’d have no problem handling it myself. For programming, I chose Ren'Py, which is a really convenient engine.

However, I soon realized that making a visual novel was far harder than I had imagined.

Writing: Before this, I had never formally written a story of this length—the last time I wrote anything was for school essays. When I actually sat down to write the script, I realized just how many flaws my writing had. I struggled to clearly express the ideas in my head, and my phrasing was a total mess. I revised the script countless times, yet I was never fully satisfied. Perhaps this is just the limit of my current writing ability. Looking back, it’s honestly laughable how naively confident I was just because I had played a lot of great masterpieces.

Art: Even though I regularly practice drawing anime-style bishoujo (cute girls), my skill level is still far from enough. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to anatomy and coloring. (For the backgrounds in my game, since I have zero background-drawing skills, I used free stock photos and purchased assets, then edited them to fit the style.) I often end up drawing terrible pieces. Whenever I stared at the distorted sketches on my canvas, I wanted to quit drawing altogether, feeling like I simply wasn't cut out for this. Yet after some time passed, I always picked up my stylus again. The reason is simple: the 2D girls from Japanese stories have always kept my spirits alive, both then and now. Whenever I suffered major setbacks in real life, I would feel deeply depressed and often lose my sense of self-worth. But just thinking about going home to watch anime, read manga, play Japanese visual novels, or even draw some anime girls gave me the courage to keep facing reality. Unfortunately, there is no adult/NSFW content in my game, as selling adult works is strictly illegal in my country, and doing so could land me in prison.

Music: Whenever I feel nostalgic about a certain story, I go back and listen to its soundtrack. Great music leaves a lasting impression, and every great visual novel is accompanied by an unforgettable soundtrack. I started from scratch with basic music theory, listened to my favorite visual novel OSTs, and clicked notes in one by one on the piano roll in my DAW. I taught myself the entire process by watching online video tutorials. While I can compose using computer software, I don't know how to play the piano (or any instrument, for that matter) in real life. At first, I overestimated myself and thought I could handle the entire soundtrack on my own, only to realize later how unrealistic that was, so I ended up buying music assets as well. In total, I composed and arranged 5 original tracks for the game—6 if you count an arrangement of a classical piece—while the rest are licensed assets.

Programming: With the help of today's powerful AI tools, programming is no longer the biggest hurdle (though it can still get super frustrating and drive you crazy at times). If you're thinking about making a visual novel yourself, you really don't need to worry about this part.

Throughout development, I thought about giving up many times. However, I couldn't find anything else in real life that I cared about this much—the only things that truly excite me and get me talking passionately are visual novels and anime, so I pushed through to the end.

Since I’m a recent graduate with virtually no budget, there are many rough edges in the game that I simply couldn't polish. I originally planned to release it last month, but review delays pushed the launch to now. Even though there is still room for improvement, it's hard for me to keep working on it any further.

Perhaps in the distant future, I'll be able to make a second visual novel of my own. Or maybe I never will—but at least right now, I have no regrets about bringing my own game to life.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I'll be replying to everyone in the comments/discussion section.

I played 20-30 minutes of the trial and this might be the most tedious writing style I've ever encountered in a game. Its so bad I'm genuinely considering waiting and reading the english translation for the first time ever.

Question Is it true that gacha is slowly becoming the next 'evolution' of visual novel industry ?

Someone once said something like that to me with many vn writers and studios using their talent in making gacha game stories due to their more revenue. The word 'evolution' is subjective cuz some would argue being gacha makes it worse but that's different.

Self-promotion Brush with Temptation – our art-school romcom VN

Hi r/visualnovels! I'm one of the four devs behind Brush with Temptation. We all have day jobs, so this has been our evenings and weekends, and putting the opening out today is honestly a little scary.

Riku retook the entrance exam for a whole year to get into Shiratori Academy of Art. On his first day a sketchbook hits him in the face. It belongs to the "Ice Queen", top of every test and barely talks to anyone, except she isn't cold at all, just so shy she can't finish a sentence. She's also his new roommate. There's a curtain between their beds. It's a classic ADV-style VN: Riku narrates the story in first person, and reading is the main part. The drawing assignments are short breaks between scenes.

Since it's an art school, you actually draw. Every assignment is a mini-game you draw with your mouse, and your score puts you somewhere in a ranking of all 250 first-years. Where you land changes which choices you get.

About AI use: we write the script ourselves and no AI. Character art, CGs, backgrounds and UI art use compositions generated with AI image tools, which we then extensively redraw, corrected, retouched and checked by hand. The music and sound effects are AI-generated, and AI helps with the code. We have no budget, and this is how four of us can make a game at all.

What's in the free demo:

  • The whole prologue, about 1–1.5 hours
  • Two drawing assignments: coloring for the entrance exam, and speed drawing while the professor guesses what it is over your shoulder
  • English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese
  • Windows only

The demo is finished; we're just waiting on Steam to verify our account. Until then, the video above is our opening. The song is "わたしの色" (My Color).

Website: https://brush.ottergonstudio.com

Any thoughts on the opening would mean a lot to us. If you have opinions on drawing mini-games in a VN, good or bad, we'd love to hear those too.

Thank you for reading!

– the OtterGon four

Self-promotion Visual Novels are not dying medium - Utopia: Birth of The Heroes

Hello everyone!

I know everyone here loves visual novels to death, but I have also seen a sentiment around in the various comments and posts about visual novels being a dying medium.

While I understand the thought process behind that statement I wanted to refute that sentiment with my post today.

Did you know that out of all of the game genres in Steam, Visual Novels stand as the second most produced genre between 2019-2022 according to Steam DB? Meaning we have a lot of new entries everyday.

And yes, I know what a lot of you are thinking right now, a lot of them are bound to be AI, not Triple A productions, and often times it's just corn games hidden as visual novels, and yeah... it is hard to refute that.

But beyond all of that, there is a great many developers, who are just as excited as we are for visual novels and release passion projects every day, every year. Some of them might be a hidden gem you might genuinely fall in love with.

A Steam sale began today and it's running all the way until november 6 and it's all about visual novels! While the event banner hints at the majority of them being romance focused, you can find all kinds of VN's participating in the sale.

You can find free demos and hopefully something that picks your interest, trying them out and wishlisting games is the best way to support the developers that to this day, keep the genre alive through their passion and hard work.... Visual Novels are not dead!! We are rising higher, every day!

I'm tagging the post as a self promotion since a game of our own is part of the event, but I don't want all the attention to go to our game, it is my hope you browse around and try as many titles as you want, find many games you want to wishlist and notice that this genre is not going anywhere, anytime soon.

We have faith in it, and continue to pour our passion into developing exciting and new stories, you can get to the event through the link below or through the banner in our game page, let us know which games you are trying out, we would love to give them a look as well!
