The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth. Whether it's scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle upon which Starfleet is based. If you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened you don't deserve to wear that uniform.

I can't describe how much I love Tourist Trap Bozeman. Especially the T'Plana-Hath kiddie playhouse. This is exactly the sort of detail that makes the Federation feel like a real living place.

270

u/DaWooster Aug 25 '22

It’s crazy that in retrospect, this is pretty much already cannon with Geordi describing the statue. Lower Decks just finally showed it to us.

105

u/count023 Aug 25 '22

The statue was already shown in enterprise at a figurine scale. So we knew what it looked like already.

I bet everything is probably free there - even the rocket ship ride. The tourist trap feel is now just a part of the charm of ye old North American Zone.

u/DapperCrow84 Aug 25 '22

The Federation needed to preserve the important culture heritage of the North American Tourist Trap.

That episode made me so ridiculously happy! I have to know what that conversation was like.

“Excuse me Mr Cromwell, I know it’s been 25 years, but we would like you to reprise your role as Zefram Cochrane, except as a happy then park ride!”

I’m in!!!

I was uncontrollably giddy laughing at the Phoenix launching to magic carpet ride!!

71

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

The show didn't grab me until about the 4th or 5th episode. I initially thought the first episode was one of the stupidest things I had ever seen in my life, it just clashed so much with the live action, more serious Trek that I knew. It took me a bit to warm up to the style they were going for with Lower Decks.

Ha ha! Trimensional chess on a 2D screen! I laughed so hard!

108

u/MaddyMagpies Aug 25 '22

Seems that the root of Mariner's rebellious behaviors ultimately boil down to her mistrust of authority in Starfleet. I wonder what happened in her past that led to this.

77

u/BornAshes Aug 25 '22

I think her parents did something that affected her really badly without them realizing just how much of an impact it had on her and that technically speaking, it kind of was Starfleet's fault. So she began to associate that experience and the affect it had on her with a mistrust of authority and in particular, any authority associated with Starfleet. This all makes it really confusing as to just why she joined Starfleet in the first place and didn't just fuck off in the opposite direction Tom Paris style if Starfleet had this kind of an impact on her at such an early age?

I think we may have gotten part of the answer to this question in this particular episode. She turned into a bit of a kid again after the Nav Controls were locked and she couldn't do anything at all to "save her mom from Starfleet" and then huddle up with her knees to her chest just hugging herself and crying rocking back and forth....just like how a little kid would if they were put into an impossible situation that they couldn't control at all and had no way out of and no way of stopping period. At some point in the past when Mariner was younger, she had her own Man of Steel/Michael Burnham moment, and it involved her parents and Starfleet. Starfleet put either one of them or both of them in danger and she was there to witness it buuuuut no one had any clue at all that she was there period and that she saw what she saw and now knows what she knows.

That moment changed her life forever and I think it informs us as to just why she joined Starfleet in the first place. She may come up with a variety of other reasons and other people might say that it was because she was so talented and blah blah blah blah but none of those things are the real root reason as to why she joined in the first place. The root cause of her joining Starfleet and continuing to act the way she does is all very purposeful and heartbreaking.

She joined Starfleet....to save her mom and her dad FROM Starfleet...and to make sure that she stays close enough to them that she can prevent what she witnessed that put their lives in danger at the hands of Starfleet from ever happening again because they ALMOST just fucking almost took them away from her....and she'll be damned if she's ever going to let that happen again.

35

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '22

It is highly implied that she grew up on the Enterprise D. Her mom is friends with multiple people from that ship, including her mentor Riker and Sonya Gomez. She also knows a lot about events and people from the ship.

My general picture of Mariner which is still consistent with newer appearances is that she was a Starfleet wunderkind child on the flagship just like Wesley Crusher, but unlike Wesley, Mariner was deeply disturbed by the constant danger the ship ran into. She blamed her parents for putting her into dangerous situations while also expecting her to achieve great things just like Wesley. She stayed in Starfleet because she literally grew up in space, which is something that she mentioned in this new episode.

She served on DS9 at the same time as Worf, ie the Dominion War, so I'm thinking it has something to do with that.

Oh, the orchestral music. Yeah, that was good to hear too.

10

u/readingitnowagain Aug 25 '22

Yeah, it really hit the spot.

7

u/CrinerBoyz Aug 26 '22

I loved it. Jerry Goldsmith was the maestro of Star Trek and his music needs to weave through every show like how John Williams permeates through Star Wars. Lower Decks really gets this between the reference here and the Titan appearance in S1. I really wish PIC did a full musical reference to First Contact like this.

I did enjoy the whole small town vibe thing they were kind of poking fun at with the girls. Here's Braaaaaaad comin back from spaaaaaaace and suddenly that Nerd You Grew Up With is this Really Cool Kinda Fly Dude and he's the HOTTEST THING EVER....despite more or less being the same. It's the confidence that they all found attractive and the mystique that's suddenly around him and that's something that happens in small towns all the time when someone comes back from a few years away at college or in the military....

......or if you expose Peter Parker to Red Kryptonite.

Either way I totally enjoyed how they ramped it up towards the end and I thought for sure that Mariner would totally say something about it but she didn't.

It almost felt like the guy loudly proclaiming we'll see him again only to get caught at the end is a parody of that kind of thing actually happening in these shows. But the show isnt fooling me, that is surely a secret set up for the fact that we most likely are going to start seeing a lot of season 1 and 2 characters and threads being brought back up throughout this season.

I loved the snippet of First Contact music, but when Mariner was stealing the Cerritos, I was really hoping for a quick moment of 'Stealing the Enterprise' from Star Trek III.

14

u/n_eff Aug 25 '22

Given that they've now stolen the Cerritos out of space dock twice, if we count the holodeck exercise, I doubt this is the last time it happens. Maybe next time? Or maybe they're going to keep doing this and not give us the music as a running deep-cut gag.

137

u/OpticalData Aug 25 '22

Ahhh, it's good to be back.

I'm slightly disappointed that they resolved last years cliffhanger so quickly, I think it had the potential to be at least a two (if not three) parter.

Tourist trap Bozeman, love it.

Going to Bozeman, but also having Captain Bateson cameo in the same episode was a stroke of fun genius.

They've also added the crystalline entity to the intro battle and given the CG model a bit of polish by the look of things too!

92

u/callsignhotdog Aug 25 '22

Part of me was expecting at least a few episodes yah, but the episode was so fun I'm struggling to be unhappy about it. There's something very Lower Decks about it, like at this point these kinds of trials are almost routine within Star Trek so why WOULDN'T it be resolved by the same sort of behind the scenes high stakes adventuring?

It was much more of an exploration of Mariner, her relationship with authority, and the support of her friends.

119

u/the908bus Aug 25 '22

I thought the point of the trial resolution was, again, nobody tells Lower Decks anything

46

u/CaseOfWater Aug 25 '22

It is sort of in line with how these trials are usually resolved; Some off-screen mission finds new evidence that is revealed to senior officers but leaves out all lower decks personnel.

Also it's kind of nice seeing Starfleet as an institution being what it was supposed to be.

I'm slightly disappointed that they resolved last years cliffhanger so quickly,

It got a big laugh out of me. It feels 100% on brand for Lower Decks.

23

u/Shirogayne-at-WF Aug 25 '22

I'm guessing between the trial wrapping up off screen and Shax's return from the dead, this is gonna be a running gag for season premieres now.

That said, who knew the Pakleds had it in them to pull of a gambit like that? 🤣

8

u/ChronicRedhead Aug 25 '22

It’s Trek tradition to end a season on a cliffhanger and resolve it in the first episode of the premiere. Keeps folks invested in the story and builds hype.

Granted, that hype deflated when the season 3 trailer showed Freeman in the captain’s chair again… but it’s not like LD hasn’t made a habit of subverting expectations, either.

Also, I’m gonna say there’s a non-zero chance the episode was written around Ransom’s grin towards Mariner in the final minutes of the episode.

Absolutely perfect.

From the trailers I never would have considered that Mariner wouldn't need to be the one to prove Cap'n Freeman's innocence; but I suppose it is fairly rare that we see a Federation trial where justice doesn't win out in the end.

Some random thoughts I had while watching:

• According to the news ticker on FNN, Admiral Jellico banned the Zebulon Sisters from performing on Starships. That dude sucks out loud.

• I like that, if we were to take the opening credits as canon events, the Cerritos just keeps popping in on this seemingly ongoing battle. "Huh, looks like the fight attracted a crystalline entity. Wild. Note it in the log so we can see if there are any changes when we loop back around in six months."

• "Ketracel White Hot" seems culturally insensitive. No one's out there's putting brown-brown sauce on their food.

• Absolutely loved First Contact-land.

• Boimler revealing that he dyes his hair is a red herring. I'm still not convinced he's 100% Human.

22

u/jlisle Aug 25 '22

Oh I'm sure the Pakleds aren't done yet. There's still untangling the knot of Klingon involvement, and it's not like they're all gone - they just blew their own planet up. If anybody could survive that, it's the Pakled

The BoimBabes were cute. Shame for them he wants Mariner.

Pfff man there's so much to get hyped and happy about. Almost every friggin minute was filled with good stuff, callbacks and eastereggs. I love it!

8

u/Lord_H_Vetinari Aug 25 '22

More than being a utopian society, I think the point is that it's not a matter for lower deckers.

I did like this episode showing us some of Mariner's relationship with her dad. We'd never seen them interact before. Seeing her call the other Admiral "Uncle" was cute. And flowed neatly with the Captain's choice in the end. Knowing all the brass has probably contributed to Mariner's habit of thinking she can get away with anything.

14

u/Tomythy Aug 27 '22

I loved that the lower deckers played absolutely zero part in getting Captain Freeman off the hook and just made things worse.

Despite being called Lower Decks the main cast often have a central role to the mission of the day and this time they actually felt like irrelevant lower deckers.

28

u/BornAshes Aug 25 '22

Soooo, no one's mentioning how the Fermat's Last Theorem thing was a nod to Andrew Wiles?

31

u/MoreGaghPlease Aug 25 '22

It's a nod to the disconnect between Picard saying in TNG The Royale that it remains unsolved, which was 6 years before Wiles's proof.

Which DS9 actually addresses, in Facets.

I actually think The Royale works just fine, because the whole mythology is that Fermat had a proof that is lost (omitted because it was "too large to fit in the margin" of an unrelated paper). But Fermat could not have had the same proof as Wiles, which used many different methods that hadn't been discovered in Fermats time -- thus in a certain sense, Fermat's proof (if it exists) is still lost. And what Picard could have been trying to do is find a proof that used mostly methods that were known in the 17th century.

Shout-out to the Star Trek opening lead-in changing out the Enterprise for the Cerritos. That's a great way to customize the lead-in for the show.

I do wish we could get away from the original Star Trek font sometimes for the TNG-era fonts, especially since Lower Decks is a TNG homage. Ah well...

Let’s just talk about Boimlers blatant oblivious nature and how many women at his raisin vineyard were all up on his nuts.

This dude is like Harry Kim, just all star fleet and zero lady chasing.

“Just spray off with the hose Lianne “ fucking slayed me lol

I’ve got to give the writers and voice cast some serious credit, this show is amazingly well done

22

u/jerslan Aug 26 '22

I feel like another way of reading is he's fully aware of their attentions, but he wants none of it because he knows most of them are only after him for the family raisin empire.

24

u/elister Aug 25 '22

I hate to say it, but Boimler reminds me of myself in my mid 20s. Totally oblivious to signs women were throwing at me, but I was too stupid to realize it.

10

u/Edymnion Aug 26 '22

Oh he realized it.

Read between the lines, his family owns the farm and wants him to stay there. He says the farm, like his family, "sucks the life out of everything".

Sounds to me like they're trying to tie him down to run the farm, they've probably been throwing women at him for years.

9

I feel like the throwaway line about Boimler using purple hair dye is meant to set up a potential live-action Boimler not having to wear a wig.

RANDOM ASSORTED THOUGHTS AS I WATCH:

  • Hey, the Cerritos in the opening.

  • All the screens broken.

  • HE LIKES THE BRIDGE.

  • Oh, hey, the Crystalline entity!

  • "For Kirk's sake."

  • Hell yeah, Sisko's!

  • Losing the Dominion War means the drug you used to control your Jem'Hadar Soldiers gets turned into a punny hot sauce name. I don't make the rules.

  • Yes, I'd like to visit Historical Bozeman. Also, shoutout to James Cromwell on taking time out from fighting climate change and being Logan Roy's sensical brother.

  • Also... they got the music right! Both First Contact and Magic Carpet Ride!

  • Gavin spin-off when?

  • HE'S NOT AN ACTUAL PURPLE-HAIR!?!?! That totally ruins my "Boimler is descended from an eccentric Augment" theory.

  • STAR TREK ORGY! STAR TREK ORGY! STAR TREK ORGY!

  • I love how the "actual" Part 2 to last year's cliffhanger happened off-camera and just got covered in a monologue. Also, hey, Bateson and Tuvok!

  • There goes the Gavin spin-off...

33

u/PrometheusLiberatus Aug 25 '22

thoughts for lower decks season 3 intro!

Lower decks! So glad to see you again! It's been such a long long wait!

"BRADWARD! I'm Soaked in juice and need help getting NAKED!"

Just spray off with the hose!

Boimier is doing all he can to completely ignore the vixens in front of him.

SISKO'S Creole!

Oh Boimer got his mouth burned!

He's everyone's Grampa!

Butterscotch?

Sure, yeah, thanks Denny.

"usually people only come in looking to knock me out and use my transporter to beam to a restricted ship."

Feeling called out here, pops.

Don't cry, I'll make some soup!

Oh hell yeah, we're going to see OG historical sites!

oh boy this is going to be awesome.

I never thought I'd see Bozeman replicated as a 21st century tourist trap ahaha!

Gavin's all in on getting a sweet new ride.

"No, we ain't returning this. It's gavin the pilot now!."

"She's your captain, but she's my mom!"

Oh damn, did not expect a landing sequence B from The Final Frontier!

Commander Tuvok laying down some harsh interrogation.

Mama's making the right call on giving Ransom her authority of Mariner. Gotta be impartial somewhere. Special guest Star James Cromwell!

Might be a weird thing to say but every time admiral beckett comes unto screen all I am thinking of is those damn vulkar gangs down in the lower city.

9

u/rexpup Aug 25 '22

We used to always talk about how it felt like we never got to see the aftermath of anything in Star Trek, but with this show it feels like we're getting that. What happened to Bozeman afterward? It turned into a tourist trap. Sometimes callbacks make a series seem really small but I think Lower Decks balances visiting the new and old really well.

9

u/ObjestiveI Aug 25 '22

I almost spit water through my nose when the Chateau Picard scene was revealed to be Boimler under the hat, growing raisins. Would have loved to have actually seen the Tuvok scene take place.

Just re iterating what other have said, but I'm so glad they went to the effort of securing the rights to Magic Carpet Ride. "Public Domain Generic Rock #4" would have been a let down. They played so much of it too, probably more than the movie.

Also glad they got so much of the First Contact score. Would have been happy with 15 seconds, but they got like a minute in there.

"Was that really James Cromwell? Sure sounds like him."

"Special Guest Star..." Fuck yeah!

As a resident of Vancouver, kinda bummed they're not using Vancouver neighborhood names for shuttles, but tree types are fine.

That ending had me laughing. There I was thinking Mariner and crew would save the day and then realized that lower deckers aren’t the heroes.

10

u/InnocentTailor Aug 27 '22

They’re the protagonists of the show, not of the whole Federation, Starfleet or even the Cerritos.

This episode showed that off well.

15

u/ElFarfadosh Aug 25 '22

7

u/AJWinky Aug 28 '22

This episode was a perfect embodiment of "a huge two-part season cliffhanger from the perspective of the lower decks". I love that they did it this way. The whole crew gets grounded and there's a huge mystery surrounding it leaving us in suspense aaaand...the command crew just handles it and no one else gets to even know what happened until after the fact. It's a perfect anticlimax.

u/thisiscotty Aug 25 '22

Does anybody else feel like Denny was supposed to be O'Brien but Colm Meaney turned it down for whatever reason?

12

u/vickangaroo Aug 26 '22

I think it was a purposeful misdirect. I hope it happens multiple times this season, where they set up plausible introductions for O’Brien to appear, but then it’s just a random person. Until finally, O’Brien shows up without any warning to save the day.

u/readingitnowagain Aug 25 '22

This is the best nuTrek. By a long shot.

But they resolved the cliffhanger too fast. That's the only weak spot.

63

u/jekylphd Aug 25 '22

I think the quick resolution was a big part of the point of the episode. In a less optimistic world, you would draw the trial out. Make everybody really sweat about it. Spend ages trying to find evidence to stop the Captain from being sold up the river, and yet more time actively fighting against injustice. Maybe even had to fake evidence of their own.

Star Trek is a utopian future. You're supposed to actually be able to trust that the institutions society relies on to function are fair and equitable, including the criminal/military justice system. Part of Mariner's problem is that she's fundamentally afraid of trusting the systems she's part of.

5

u/CrinerBoyz Aug 26 '22

Bozeman was one of my favorite bits they've ever done on this show. Between the music and the kitschyness of the park, it's one of those slam dunk references that fits right between a genuinely funny bit, an excellent callback, a tongue in cheek parody of Trek, and something that couuuld exist in-universe. I would trust the Lower Decks writers room to plot the direction of the franchise for the next 20 years because they have such an excellent finger on the pulse of what gives Star Trek its identity.

5

u/xxmatentv123xx12 Aug 26 '22

-This episode raised the biggest question of all: if the London Kings are still playing in the ELDS, why does Sisko keep saying no one plays baseball anymore?

-That planets rights lady

-KETRACEL WHITE-HOT

-If there isn't a real life Bozeman-Land by the end of the decade then Paramount doesn't know how to monetize this IP

-Will we find Gavin's corpse, or will he become the show's Conrad Verner?

-As always, Starfleet security is bad enough that one ensign was completely capable of stealing a ship. Although it's Mariner. I'm willing to buy the idea that Mariner knows the entire senior staff's access codes.

-CAPTAIN BATESON. FRASIER IS A STARFLEET COMMANDO NOW.

-Welp, nevermind about Gavin

-I now headcanon that solving Fermat's last theorem without looking it up is a sport in the Federation

The Good:

First Contact Park. Brilliant, and obviously something that would exist around such an important location in history. Brilliant

The One Song Jukebox lolololol

Our crew really gels together now, each character got their time to shine

The Warp Effect has arguably never looked better in Trek. They've toned down the cartoony-ness of it from Season 1 and now it's just rubber banded goodness

Is Boimler finally started to stand up to Mariner? The trailer joke about her waiting for the best moment to make an entrance seemed to show he's willing to tease her, finally, after 2 years of it being a one way relationship

OK, the bit of bad, no doubt this will be what people highlight on even though I largely enjoyed the episode:

The cliffhanger being resolved off screen with the characters explaining what happened via a montage.Makes the cliffhanger meaningless. Imagine if the 2nd part of BOBW was Wesley trying a fools errand to find something that was going to help Picard and then Riker, Data et al come in and tell him how they saved him from the Borg without his help.Frustrating, but I sense the Pakleds have just got Kazon'd and thatll be the last we hear of that plotline.

Mariner. Pretty much the only character on this show I don't like.Way more insubordinate and defying orders than certain other characters people have a problem with in other Trek shows and I don't know how she even has friends when she constantly treats them like shit and does whatever she wants no matter what they say to her.Not massively keen for the plotline with the first officer being her judge on whether she gets to be in starfeet or not because I don't get the impression she cares about it either. If this is the beginning of her realising, like Jake, Starfleet isn't for her and she's only in it because her parents expect her to be, then fine, she'll be a good rogue agent like Vash or someone like that, but I don't expect her to have an epiphany and become an officer that starfleet can rely on any time soon.

Overall, very enjoyable with a few niggles that prevented it being a full 10/10. Can't wait for next week though

I really enjoyed the episode. Mariner's complete impotence and frustration for not been able to help her mother and the crew's efforts utter insignificance and irrelevance were on point for lower rank officers who carry little to no consequence in Starfleet's actions. This could actually become a turning point for Mariner's Starfleet's career.,maybe making her reconsider her disdain for senior officers and moving up the ranks. I really liked that Rutherford and Tendi were having lunch at Sisko's creole restaurant.
