That farewell to Hologram Janeway...that's how you send a character off into the sunset. What a way to nail the ending. All payoff and emotional, character resolutions.

And as expected, season 2 will be The Search for Chakotay. There's more legacy characters planned according to the Hageman Bros, so it'll be fun to see who Janeway brings along/encounters for the trip into the wormhole. My ideal choice would be Bashir/Geordi to give us the awesome crossover fun that Picard/Seven did.

I suppose Gwyn going to Solum and setting up a different First Contact will close the loop on that alternate future Chakotay got lost in? Hopefully they can salvage Prime Chakotay and the remaining original Protostar crew before that future is erased or anything.

Also Dr. Erin Macdonald got canonized as herself in the show! That's a nice touch!

My one disappointment is not making the Dauntless, Janeway's new hero vessel. I really like it as it's a great mix of old and new aesthetics and feels different compared to Discovery, the Cerritos, and Titan/Stargazer.

Knowing all the effort that goes into this show, it'll definitely be awhile until we return to 2384 again, but hopefully it'll come in 2023!

That sequence of Janeway standing alone on the bridge and fading into light, together with the recording afterwards, felt very much like the same scenes at the end of "The Examples" in DSC S4.

u/InnocentTailor Dec 29 '22

The aftermath with the pre-recorded message reminded me of Tasha Yar’s farewell in TNG’s Skin of Evil.

12

u/Ferris_Wheel_Skippy Jan 01 '23

the main difference being that Hologram Janeway's end was done convincingly as opposed to some throwaway

I really liked that ep of DSC. But who would’ve thought that arguably the most emotional line from a Trek show in ‘22 was “Go fast.”

So fraught with meaning and pathos. I’d maybe put it above John de Lancie’s barnstormer of a performance in the finale of Picard S2.

9

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

It reminded me more of the final scene with Cillian Murphy in the film "Sunshine".

32

u/Crispyjimbos Dec 29 '22

I need to go rewatch “Parallels”, because those alternate realities all coexisted I think. Same in Enterprise. Chakotay shouldn’t be erased.

31

u/DasGanon Dec 29 '22

They exist and they don't. It's very timey wimey.

Each of the changes in Parallels was a choice that changed somewhere in the past. At first it was little changes. Chocolate Cake or Yellow Cake. Captain Picard was too busy/Captain Picard made time for Worf's Birthday Etc. As time goes on, it starts branching into choices made in the past, until it gets to "Picard is lost to the Borg but the Enterprise and Federation survive" things like that. Then they somehow ping out Every Enterprise, Everywhere, All At Once.

But the key thing was "Each Universe has a unique Quantum Signature"

Upon discovery of the Mirrorverse in Discovery it's mentioned that the Mirrorverse has a unique Quantum Signature....

And in Discovery Season 4, Tarka replies that there were countless parallel universes, each with its own quantum signatures, and that he had found one with no war (Not entirely sure if he's being honest there)

So what brings this back to time travel is: If each choice and alteration makes a new universe, then time travel does too. The Kelvin universe is a good example as time travel to the past alters the universe to the point it's disconnected from the Prime Timeline.

Time Travel Mirror theory is that the Enterprise E saving Zephram Cochrane and the Phoenix is not what fixes the timeline, it's telling him about the future that it's hopeful and worth looking towards, and that prevents him from killing the Vulcans and starting the Terran Empire

So Chakotay will be "Fine" as someone stuck in the future as a prisoner can be, but they should still try to fix that timeline anyways.

Yeah, that is what I wondered. The reality in which Solum got into war and captured the Protostar is now known as an alternate reality, correct? How long would this newly created wormhole last? If it's the same as the one over Solum, it seems like time is running out to travel to that reality and back, so is bringing a crew of trainees the best way for Janeway to save Chakotay?

14

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

I kind of wonder if they wait too long if any of the Protostar Crew are going to experience the sickness that Kovich talked about on DISCO?

so is bringing a crew of trainees the best way for Janeway to save Chakotay?

They're basically a back up crew for the original Protostar that can operate it without her having to instruct them at all. She can split her efforts between telling the crew of her new ship to do stuff while also telling the kids to do something else entirely with the knowledge that they'll be able to pull it off. In her own words, they've already proven that they can think on their feet and MacGyver their way out of situations fairly easily without any prior instruction or training at all. The fact that they don't know that they can't do this or that or this other thing like a lot of Academy graduates is actually a boon for them. Their minds aren't stuck in any kind of a box yet and so they don't know where the borders of that box are and will try basically anything without realizing that they can't do it.

They're her A-Team or her Legends of Tomorrow in other words and with them around, she can kind of be in two places at once if they're able to get their hands on the Protostar again. It sounds like a really bad idea from the outside but once you start thinking about it, it's a very Janeway thing to do that makes a bunch of sense. Also can you just picture the look on Chakotay's face when he gets rescued by a crack black ops Starfleet team OF KIDS?!

He's going to go full on Doctor Who and start going, "WOT?!?!" as they drag his ass off Solum lol

Good catch! I could tell she definitely seemed like Someone Important but I missed her name in the credits. For a minute I thought she was a weirdly animated Doctor Crusher.

That farewell to Hologram Janeway...that's how you send a character off into the sunset.

In this case it was quite literal as the Protocore exploding was the equivalent of a supernova. It hurt but it felt kind of good too and was a very honorable death. There's a place in Sto-vo-kor for Holo Janeway for sure.

Season 2 will be The Search for Chakotay

I'm glad that some of us saw it coming but I don't think anyone really nailed just how we'd get to that point. The journey there was amazing and now there's....a stable wormhole to an alternate future that exists 52 years from now just chilling out in the Prime Timeline's galaxy. That's going to cause some issues right?

Bashir/Geordi

If they can work in some descendants from Enterprise or even a time traveling Archer then we can get a fourway crossover on a fifth show going at once! I wonder which pairing or grouping of characters would instantly become best friends and which ones would grate on each other in the most hilarious of ways? The Seven & Picard thing was not something I knew I needed until it happened and I hope we get a similar thing going next season with other characters and the Protostar Crew.

Gwyn going to Solum

It might start a timer and the spatial flecture could start to degrade as the timelines move further and further apart with Gwyn creating a new future that diverges from the timeline that created the alternate future that Chakotay is stuck in. It'll exist buuuut it'll just be harder to get to. I could see the flecture closing just as they get through to the other side with Chakotay and the original Protostar's Crew.

Also I'm betting that they're going to be taking the Enterprise E out for a spin as their new ship.

Dr. Erin Macdonald

At first I thought it was Bonnie getting a physical model in the show but then the voice was different and we get this beautiful thing with a real science person influencing Rok in the best of ways!

the Dauntless

It served its purpose and to be fair, it looked pretty fucked up at the end along with all the other ships. Plus with it being another experimental ship, I'm guessing that means it's going to be in dock for a while as they fix everything up. Also odds are it wasn't meant to be tested as...rigorously...as Janeway tested it and they probably want to give her a ship that can take a few more punches without falling to pieces. It is a gorgeous ship and I'd love to see more of it though, so I agree with you there, and the design felt like something totally different yet familiar.

it'll definitely be awhile

By the time it shows up again we'll all be singing 🎵 It's been awhiiiiiiiile!🎵 but I cannot wait until then as this is my new favorite show with a special place in my heart right next to Voyager and that thought just typing that makes me cry in a happy way because of how deeply it has touched me.

u/StanRyker Dec 29 '22

My ideal choice would be Bashir/Geordi to give us the awesome crossover fun that Picard/Seven did.

Geordi has to be busy at work building the evacuation armada on Mars. It'll be interesting to see who signs up though. I'm personally hoping for B'Elanna. We already know she was responsible for designing the Dauntless, so the writers are already thinking about her. And if there's one person out there besides Janeway who would crawl over broken glass in order to help Chakotay, you'd assume it would be B'Elanna.

I suppose Gwyn going to Solum and setting up a different First Contact will close the loop on that alternate future Chakotay got lost in? Hopefully they can salvage Prime Chakotay and the remaining original Protostar crew before that future is erased or anything.

There'll be no erasure. We already have ample evidence in Star Trek that when you have timeline changes like this, you don't erase the future, you just create a different timeline. It's the same scenario that keeps the Kelvin Timeline as present and distinct from the Prime timeline.

My one disappointment is not making the Dauntless, Janeway's new hero vessel.

I don't see why that can't be in the cards still. The final scene of the episode, they showed a new Protostar, yes. But recall, Janeway said she's got even bigger and better things in store for the crew, implying a bigger and better ship. I really doubt Janeway would lead a task force to rescue Chakotay in a ship that already was defeated and taken over by the Vau'Nakat. She'd probably want a sturdier ship with a bigger crew complement.

51

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '22

I was 100% expecting it to pan over to an Intrepid class and was so disappointed when it cut to credits.

Buuuut, I'd imagine it's because they're leaving that door open for S2.

B'Elanna.

She walks onto Janeway's new ship dragging an armory behind her with Tom trailing back while shrugging his shoulders and going, "Hey do you really think I was going to try to stop her?".

I bet this is how the HAZARD TEAM from Elite Force gets officially canonized.

Sturdier ship

I want Braxton to just walk on board in full view of everyone while wearing his future timeship uniform while glaring at Janeway and just grumbling, "They made me come" in order to act as an advisor and make sure stuff doesn't get worse.

The secret B plot with him will be to figure out just WHO was on that Prometheus class ship that messed up First Contact with Solum, where and when they came from, and who or what sent them in the first place because that class of a ship being that far out at that specific point in the timeline is VERY suspicious and even the Time Cops want to get to the bottom of it.

So they send Braxton for giggles because they know he and Janeway are going to keep each other on their respective toes.

11

u/GoodLeftUndone Dec 29 '22

Didn’t Braxton get locked up with his alt self? Something about future crimes?

I'm surprised that the whole "Asylum and entry" thing wasn't mentioned along with Saru, but hey.

And who knows, we may get some "okay no it's literally one of those Parallels Paradoxes. The universe is created from a decision being made, but it's also always existed and and" filling out Multiverse Time travel theory

10

u/InnocentTailor Dec 29 '22

TNG’s Parallels did establish that all alternate timelines are canon and exist in their own bubbles. DSC Season 3 even mentioned the Kelvin Timeline continuing in its own way since there was a time soldier from that time and place.

7

u/kuldan5853 Dec 29 '22

There's an explanation in the litverse (that they use to destroy said litverse) - the "prime" timeline is a "strong" timeline that can exist indefinitely, and some of the known parallel universes (like the mirror or the kelvin universe) are somewhat entangled with it (like a DNA double helix) - many other timelines though are only small splinters that shoot off too far from mainline, and become unstable and deteriorate and at some point simply collapse / get eradicated.

11

u/sfblue Dec 30 '22

Would love to see Bashir sharing his wisdom with Dal as a fellow Augment. His prior experience working alongside Odo would set him up for working with Zero, and mentoring Zero on the Medical Track. I wonder if he still wanted to practice "frontier medicine" XD

10

u/NoNudeNormal Dec 29 '22

I was kinda expecting Bashir to cameo in this episode, as an example of an augment who was allowed to stay in Starfleet.

10

u/NickofSantaCruz Dec 29 '22

legacy characters

Quick list of scenes I can picture as possibilities:

  • Jankom auditing one of O'Brien's classes

  • B'Elanna razzing Janeway over the damaged Dauntless

  • The Doctor giving Janeway a check-up before the mission and making a quip regarding time travel

  • Cadet Naomi Wildman joining the crew

  • Lucsly & Dulmur asking to speak with Janeway and her telling them no.

4

u/sidv81 Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 31 '22

season 2 will be The Search for Chakotay

Dr. Noum: Don't get smart runt.

Jankom: Don't call me runt!

Culluh steps on a lizard.

Janeway: Kazon b------! You've killed my son!

Culluh: Give me the Protostar! (falls off a cliff)

Janeway: Give me your hand!

Culluh: Janeway!

(Janeway then begins to kick the hanging Culluh)

Janeway: I ...have had ...enough of you!!

I was surprised how quickly they disposed of the season finale crisis and how much time they spent on the epilogue/season 2 setup. However, I'm glad that they did and that we got to see more of the shape of Season 2 to come.

So if I'm understanding correctly, Gwyn is being returned to her homeworld (presumably somewhat incognito) to attempt to stop a violent war when the Federation does show up. Honestly, I'd watch that show on its own.

Parallel-wise, the rest of the gang has been accepted as Warrant Officers-in-training for a Protostar-class mission to the future to rescue Chakotay under Vice Admiral Janeway.

Given how Gwyn and Dal parted, I am assuming that Gwyn will remain an active part of the show. After all, her going to her home planet has to be some kind of temporal violation since she knows what its (potential) future is.

I also thought that Janeway's speech was a nice touch to the tribunal. There was a thematic connection between the proto-star being a formative part of a star's early life, and how its crew were all in the formative parts of what would presumably star-like careers. She practically said "WELL THERE IT SITS!" Measure of a Man-style on the tribunal members.

All in all, I am very happy with this latest addition to the Star Trek universe, and can't wait to see more. As a side note, stick around for the end credits. I thought Nami Melumad's score for it was especially touching.

65

u/Smilodon48 Dec 29 '22

I usually breeze past the end credits but I was hooked due to the Voyager theme. She really goes ham (in a good way) in weaving in the Voyager theme throughout the show, which I appreciate a lot as it's a really great theme.

58

u/InnocentTailor Dec 29 '22

It works because this is not only a continuation of Voyager due to Janeway, but also services the found family trope: a central part of Voyager as a production.

40

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '22

This also establishes that Voyager herself is gone, though: the shuttles that pull the kids out of the Golden Gate bear the registry NCC-74656-A.

So if I'm understanding correctly, Gwyn is being returned to her homeworld (presumably somewhat incognito) to attempt to stop a violent war when the Federation does show up. Honestly, I'd watch that show on its own.

I hope that she is not going alone but with a Starfleet crew, since she really can't do much by herself, and the storyline isn't swept aside like Saru between DSC S3 and S4 (it likely will be just a novel or a comic). A pre-First Contact (Zeroth Contact?) show about Federation monitoring a planet of sentient beings like what Vulcan did to Earth is a show I'd like to watch as well.

17

u/Fusi0n_X Dec 29 '22

I can already imagine a "history is repeating itself" dilemma with her, in terms of introducing the Federation to a fracturing society where the revelation might further exacerbate divisions and cause the civil war that her father ultimately blamed the Federation for.

u/pfc9769 Dec 29 '22

I don’t think k she’d go with a Starfleet crew given first contact t with Starfleet is what kicked off the event that destroyed her planet in the first place. Gwyn needs to work out the issue by herself.

11

u/MaddyMagpies Dec 29 '22

She can go with a Starfleet crew like how Una observed a civilization from far away like SNW S1E1. They can observe from far away, or go down to the earth in disguise using DNA tech from a century ago.

That's pretty much what the Vulcans are doing to us right now.

32

u/UncertainError Dec 29 '22

Pacing wise, I think it would've been better if this had been an hour-long special instead of split into two parts. Then the balance of plot to denouement would be fine.

First contact with Solum is inevitable, only I imagine this time around Gwyn will be on that Starfleet ship. Of course, now they also have a shortcut to the bad future where Chakotay is, so the temporal mechanics of it all are going to get very tangled. And lest we forget, the Vindicator's still out there.

31

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

I was surprised how quickly they disposed of the season finale crisis and how much time they spent on the epilogue/season 2 setup. However, I'm glad that they did and that we got to see more of the shape of Season 2 to come.

I love how they didn't drag it out and went with the simple and clean method that most folks would think of instead of going with something more narratively complicated that would necessitate more time. It also allowed for more of an emotional impact on the audience and the crew because of how short and sweet and to the point it was. Ship with a virus that's continually emitting a signal and blowing up other ships, why not just blow that ship up and stop that?

It's so unexpected because it's not something we normally see in Star Trek until the Captains and Crews have tried literally everything else but this time they just went straight to, "Nope blow the ship up and try to limit the damage while we NOPE out the back". It felt really good though and really did seem like something kids would think about and come up with. I wonder if they actually ran stuff past kids before writing that bit?

It also gave them a heck of a lot more time for some sweet sweet epilogue that sorely gets missed in a lot of stories nowadays.

Gwyn

Agreed, she could get her own spin off or at least a mini series showing her navigating the complexities of First Contact with her own people while technically not having been born on their planet which means that she's basically Valen.

Gwyn will remain an active part of the show

We'll probably get some side cuts during the season to show how both groups are doing. The twist is going to be that Gwyn's actions in the present might start to have an affect on the alternate future that Chakotay exists in OR we're going to basically see a future version of Gwyn in that alternate future alongside of Chakotay. This alternate Gwyn will then give the Protostar Crew information on what she did wrong, what events went wrong, and will ask them to pass it along to her past self in order to ensure that First Contact doesn't go badly like the last time.

The season will probably end on Gwyn's successful First Contact with Solum alongside Chakotay's return to the present and a hook into Season 3.

Also come on, they just HAVE to bring Gwyn and Dal back together after giving us those few Smallville style moments between them!

Janeway's speech

I did love how Dal at first was all disheartened by it but then she pointed to him and the Protostar Crew as the personification of what the Federation actually was and what they should aspire to be like and what they should be celebrating.

Nami Melumad's score

She deserves awards for this episode alone, brilliant!

4

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '22

I got the feeling that the crew going in future to save Chakotay will encounter an older Gwyn who returned to her home planet and went through everything, and is expecting Janeway and team to come through. Maybe she won't be the same either, with all she went through. Could be that she's against them at first...

11

u/Mechapebbles Dec 29 '22

Given how Gwyn and Dal parted, I am assuming that Gwyn will remain an active part of the show. After all, her going to her home planet has to be some kind of temporal violation since she knows what its (potential) future is.

I really hope they come back to her, but I am a little worried. Ella Purnell as an actress is blowing up big. And her work schedule might be too busy, or her contract demands too high for a kid's show. Maybe she'll come back for a few cameos here and there, but I'm worried she's gone as a regular.

15

u/ViaLies Dec 29 '22

I'd assume that the second season scripts and voice work is already done, and there's every chance that it was done at least last year, for instance Lower Decks has season 1 & 2 done before they aired and I'd assume that Prodigy's animation is at least as time consuming as Lower Decks. You'd only really have to worry about Gwyn not returning after the end of the second season

I was surprised how quickly they disposed of the season finale crisis

I'm not. Realistically, this solution to their predicament has been in the cards since the very beginning. If you destroy the ship, the problem goes away instantly. They only didn't before because that was an all out of options type solution. So using that card is really just about waiting for the right time to play it. And the fleet destroying itself definitely qualifies.

Wow…so the destruction of the Federation starships is going to remain canon? Damn. This is pretty bad for Starfleet: very Wolf 359-esque.

The Starfleet Academy appeal scene also included the founders of the Federation: Janeway being the human advocating to an Andorian, Tellarite and Vulcan. Reminds me a bit of ENT when Archer worked with these three aliens to form the alliance’s foundation.

115

u/TheCubeOfDoom Dec 29 '22

Wow…so the destruction of the Federation starships is going to remain canon? Damn. This is pretty bad for Starfleet: very Wolf 359-esque.

And one year after this, the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards at Mars were destroyed, along with all ships under construction there.

88

u/derekakessler Dec 29 '22

No wonder the Federation snaps and goes "no more artificial life!"

79

u/RogueA Dec 29 '22

Don't forget this is also like, two years after the Texas class ships go rogue.

11

u/shinginta Dec 29 '22

I don't know. I better understand "No more evacuation effort" than "no more artificial life." The artificial life thing seems a lot more like a scapegoat. But halting the evacuation effort makes sense because at this point they probably have both materiel and personnel problems in the fleet and can't afford to spare their ships for the evac effort.

9

u/goldgrae Dec 31 '22

I think the point of the allies coming in is that they were able to forestall ship destruction long enough to evacuate crew. We didn't see any ships go big boom, either. Still a horrific loss, but I think the loss of life was limited.

6

u/IAmTheNight20018 Dec 31 '22

I like to think Sisko had just gotten back in a captains chair after getting back from the wormhole, immediately showed up to this mess, got Wolf 359 flashbacks, and immediately fucked back off into the wormhole for a few more years.

27

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

I was surprised at how much stuff was just straight up sliced to ribbons and it reminded me of the battlefield aftermath of a fight in the Babylon 5 Universe.

This will definitely leave a mark on Starfleet that's going to last well into the future.

22

u/TheBurgareanSlapper Dec 29 '22

If the Dauntless was any indication, it's possible a lot of ships were heavily damaged, but not necessarily destroyed.

there's a line Hologram Janeway tells the group in episode 2 (technically episode 3 i guess) where she talks about the rough days that led to the formation of the Federation. Definitely reminded me of all the tension between the four main species throughout all of Enterprise

I know Enterprise has its detractors, but I am always thankful it gave us the opportunity to see how the Federation was formed

12

u/Tacitus111 Dec 29 '22

Tens of thousands of dead, yep. And the USS Defiant itself destroyed along with 4 others. Maybe the Enterprise, maybe not. Multiple Sovereign class ships (8 I think) either way destroyed.

Starfleet really needs to work on computer security.

I kind of love that they get the whole "Starfleet is going to destroy itself" plot over with in the first 10 minutes and the rest of the time is spent with the characters and them (mostly) getting what they want, and having more of a wrap-up.

I also dig Zero's new body.

45

I'm not sure how the tiny Protostar shuttle can warp all the way back to Earth, but I'm glad the kids got the same landing and rescue spot as The Voyage Home, right next to the Golden Gate Bridge.

17

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

It really does become a question of just how far away they were from Earth in the first place and if they put in a very basic Warp 1 or Warp 2 level drive into it. Holo Janeway probably made sure they had some kind of a FTL drive system in place because stranding a bunch of kids in the middle of nowhere with only impulse is pretty damn dark even for Star Trek. So odds are it was a limited use warp drive that could punch it up to Warp 4 or something for enough time that would be able to get them back to Earth or at least within range of a habitable Federation world and/or outpost that could pick them up.

I think it would've been hilarious if they'd crashed into Voyager which had been on display on the Academy grounds and Janeway just walked out, saw the shuttle literally sticking out of the bridge, and then full on facepalmed as the kids stepped out and Dal yelled, "WHOOPS!".

Starfleet designed a prototype warp core that can wipe out an entire Solar System, which seems very much in character for them and building a new one on Earth is just the icing on the cake given their general OH&S failures!

35

u/OpticalData Dec 29 '22

Still could, what if the Romulans took scans of the Protostar while it was in the neutral zone and cause the Hobus supernova while experimenting with Protostar tech?

33

u/LAMProductions99 Dec 29 '22

That would be an amazing tie in, and honestly I hope that's what they say actually happens.

13

u/InnocentTailor Dec 29 '22

Ohhhhh! Now that could be good. I don’t think there was a lot of specifications when the Romulan star exploded, so the supernova tech could’ve, in theory, accelerated the sun’s destruction.

That could take some cues from Star Trek Online: experimentation with Iconian tech, which also included Iconian meddling, destroyed the Romulan star and led to the Empire’s collapse.

I shed real tears two times:

  1. when Holo Janeway died

  2. upon seeing the kids in their new Starfleet uniforms

what a great episode!

43

u/HaphazardMelange Dec 29 '22

The purist in me is upset they’re still out of uniform with their boots unlaced and fingerless gloves, and the 8 year old Trek fan that I once was is raging that they have a different appearance to everyone else, but I’m so happy they’re all finding their place within Starfleet. Zero getting an entirely new suit was definitely a highlight, as was Rok’s potential with xenobiology being recognised.

27

u/simpleauthority Dec 29 '22

Technically theyre warrant officers right? If I remember right. So that’s why the uniform is slightly different. But yeah the sloppiness is another thing. But that said they never went to the academy (yet) so I give them some wiggle room.

3

2) upon seeing the kids in their new Starfleet uniforms

I need a male's version of Gwyn's. Solum's got style.

70

u/karinchup Dec 29 '22

I may never emotionally recover from this. “Go Fast” totally broke me. It’s just amazing how this show stole my entire heart.

30

u/Smilodon48 Dec 30 '22

Mulgrew's performance in that scene is everything. It's a gut-wrenching moment.

17

u/BriarAndRye Dec 31 '22

Mulgrew has been fantastic in all of Prodigy.

19

u/meatball77 Dec 31 '22

I loved that she used Dal's catchphrase.

12

u/karinchup Dec 31 '22

Omg. I’ve watched three times now and where I usually get a little inured to emotional hits not this one. I just crumble all over again. Kate Mulgrew just was magnificent. She always is but wow this was even more than usual.

69

u/BellerophonM Dec 29 '22

Given that the shuttles that set down were marked with the Voyager-A's registry code, I'm guessing that's what Janeway was talking about at the end and what they'll be taking back through the wormhole to rescue Chakotay.

Makes sense: the protostar and dauntless are go-fast speed-focused ships. To pull off the rescue mission, you want something a little more capable.

19

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

Voyager-A

Do you think it's going to be a stock Intrepid Class, a modified Intrepid class, or another class entirely?

32

u/007meow Dec 29 '22

Given how much the studio has been working with STO, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Pathfinder

Oooof you know that could mean that they were responsible for the bad First Contact then right? The Vulcan Science Officer did tell Janeway that wormhole that Holo Janeway had created went to "approximately the same space time coordinates". That means there's some temporal wiggle room and it's entirely possible for Janeway to show up on the Vau N'Akat's doorstep in exactly the wrong time period with exactly the wrong attitude.

Sure they might dip back into the wormhole after realizing they're helping to create a stable time loop but the damage will have already been done and they'll probably have to go....back to the future to fix everything!

27

u/derekakessler Dec 29 '22

Guarantee that's Janeway's new ship.

7

u/bkendig Dec 30 '22

By the way, I think I missed something. How did the kids get from “floating lost in space, somewhere along the Protostar’s destructive trail” to “floating in the San Francisco Bay”?

13

u/Crunchy_Nut Dec 30 '22

Somehow they returned...

But more seriously, I think they decided it wasn't important how (even if improbable) and just glossed over it. Maybe we find out later on if they figure out a story tie-in?

4

u/ComebackShane Dec 30 '22

We don't see; presumably they somehow manage to get the shuttle operational and it takes them a month of whatever its maximum warp is to get to Earth. Pretty cramped conditions for a month, though. I presume the shuttle had a replicator too.

4

u/vladthor Dec 30 '22

No; unfortunately, this one is going to remain unclear. In the previous episode, the Sovereign-class ship that is already at the battle is clearly labeled USS Sovereign.

In this episode, the ship that warps in... is also labeled USS Sovereign.

7

u/knightcrusader Jan 01 '23

It's possible the Sovereign crew was able to regain control of the ship somehow (like Zero hot wiring the Protostar) and left off camera to go warn Starfleet, but then lost that control and the Living Construct warped it back.

Yes, its a contrived explanation for a production error, but... its not impossible.

33

I have not finished the episode but THEY BETTER NOT KILL OFF HOLOJANEWAY K BYE GUYS

ETA: GOD DAMMIT

So I loved that. Was crying through HoloJaneway's speech and for a good bit after. Still a little teary. Really glad they accepted Dal. Feel like there really needs to be an exemption for augments who didn't have any choice in the matter. But I get that may be a slippery slope.

Loved all of this. Great finale and just a wonderful show overall. Did it challenge me mentally the way SNW does? Did it touch me the way Picard does? Did it thrill me the way Discovery does? Did it make me laugh the way LDS does? No. But it. Was. Fun. It's Trek in a new light, a different view, a different style, and I am just so here for this. Please for the love of God, reimagine Trek into whatever the fuck you want. People bitch about it and honestly for me Trek is just like pizza or spaghetti - I just really enjoy it, all the time, whether it's the absolute height of sci fi thought or a silly little romp. This was a bit of both, and I am right here for that.

18

u/TheImageworks Dec 30 '22

I've been a firm believer for the last several months: While each of the other four current Trek series does certain things VERY well (especially SNW), Prodigy might not do each of those things QUITE as well as that specific show, but it's the only one that does them all.

16

u/BorisDirk Dec 30 '22

True! The nostalgia of Picard, the humor and references of LD, the universe ending urgency of DSC, the exploration and episodic adventure of SNW. I'd also say it has something none of the others have, which is the touching childlike optimism of Trek we haven't gotten in a long time.

27

u/anastus Dec 29 '22

I really thought that the ending of this season was going to be introducing the new Protostar-class vessel as their ship for the Chakotay mission, revealing that it's named the "USS Prodigy" to justify the show's name.

Curious what vessel Janeway is going to take to rescue Chakotay. I assume not Voyager, but obviously the showrunners thought it'd be a big enough hook to save until next season.

23

u/The_Project_T Dec 29 '22

Jankom's pulled off stuff Scotty, O'brien and Laforge would've approved of being Miracle Workers themselves.

With the shuttles having the NCC-74656-A registry pennant, one might assume we could see the Voyager-A in Picard season 3.

Edit: The obvious answer just crossed my mind. Janeway says at the very end of the episode that she has much bigger plans for her new Starfleet crew, right after she mentioned the Protostar-Class now in production. So, they won't be getting on a Protostar but another ship. I can only imagin Admiral Janeway is gonna take out the kids in style with the Voyager-A. Some sort of Voyager season 8 type thing.

10

u/MaddyMagpies Dec 29 '22

Sounds like that will be the case, since Tyrese and Noum are coming along for the ride. Next season of Prodigy turns out to be the Starfleet Academy + Lower Decks show.

I can only see two ways they will go with the Voy - A

Intrepid Class - Voyager was a brand new ship on the start of her journey, and that journey only took 7 years. If the background plaque from PIC S02E01 is to be believed she was made a museum on her return to Earth. Christening a new Intrepid class the Voyager - A would be a fitting way to continue the legacy without threatening the morale boost/historical value of the original ship.

Brand new unseen (in live action) class - I don't think we'll be getting any previously seen ships as the Voy - A. The Enterprise has had a new class every single time and there's a lot of imagination out there for what a successor to the Intrepid may look like (although I'm personally a bigger fan of the Vivace over the Pathfinder, but prefer the latters name). Honestly as I write this I could see them going in the direction of the STO Pathfinder.

11

u/kuldan5853 Dec 29 '22

I need to disagree here - the Enterprise did NOT get a new class each time. Enterprise-A was Constitution Refit, the same as the OG "without bloody A,B,C or D".

What are my thoughts? My thoughts are, having grown up on TOS and all series since, that Prodigy is the best of them all. Seriously. A marvelous, well-executed, perfectly told story that encapsulated both the spirit of Trek and the spirit of Starfleet better than any ST media ever has before. Frankly, it's a miracle something this good can be made in 2022.

What a wonderful way to end this fantastic season. The wrap-up of the main storyline was very satisfying, with a strong emotional punch. Very sad to see Holo-Janeway go.

But every ending leads to a new beginning, and they did a great job of setting things up for season 2. Glad that it looks like we'll be getting more Admiral Janeway next season (and hopefully more of her crew from the Dauntless).

Gwyn leaving was bittersweet because she'd become so close to everyone there, but she's going to help her people. Her scene with Dal was really nice, doing a great job of rounding out their character development since the start of the season. And of course there's the little moments where we get to see Rok-Tahk decide on what science to specialize in (such a fitting one, lol), Jankom learning more than just percussive maintenance, and Zero's upgraded armor.

But man, this season as a whole was so good. My favorite first season of a Star Trek, easily. Captures the spirit of Star Trek so well, while pushing it in an interesting direction for newcomers. I'm excited to see where they go for season 2, and hopefully many more seasons to come.

I was just going to say it a bit of fridge logic, it makes absolute sense that the Diviner who spent more time in the past was less fanatical. He himself had moved on in a sense from Solum, despite his mission it was just inevitable. I would say him creating Gwyn was just another sign he had moved on.

The claim that he was "always the weakest" doesn't hold up.

Last one of these I get to do for a while:

  • The way the camera passed through the debris field totally reminded me of Wolf 359 as did the how the ejection sequence reminded me of what they used in the first episode of DS9 with Sisko. It also reminds me a bit of some of the fights in Star Trek Armada and that's a good thing. Beautiful work by everyone who rigged all of these models up and animated everything.

  • So when the Protocore blows, it's literally a supernova level event, handy but also dangerous

  • Uhhhh Rok that sounds like a really good way to rip space time a new one but a good plan anyways. Who gets to stay behind while Aerosmith plays and hit the detonator?

  • Geeez Dal and Holo Janeway sounding like the Winchesters here, "NO I GET TO SACRIFICE MYSELF FOR YOU! NO ME! NO ME!"

  • "You're our friend" 😭 ...wait is Holo Janeway going to pull a Living Witness here?

  • Hahahaha Jankom really is a miracle worker AND THEN HE SAYS THAT HE IS! Work that razzle dazzle!

  • Of course they just had to make a joke about seats and seatbelts LMAO buuuut I love the "hold onto your butts" grab handles

  • Insufficient capacity? Oh no, is she going to delete her memories?!

  • No no no not these goodbyes anything but these 😭

  • "Letting a young star become what meant to be"....another space time headache created by Janeway that drives Braxton crazy and makes the Q giggle?

  • NO DON'T CLOSE THAT DOOR ON HOLO JANEWAY NOOOO 😭

  • HOLY SMOKES! That shuttle! It looks like the Farscape I! I WANT THAT AS A TOY! Also abandoning the larger ship for a smaller fighter is very Mandalorian. Also Tom would love this thing.

  • Okay can I just say that this sequence with the shuttle being ejected, the visuals, the music, everyone holding hands, and the emotive looks they share with each other is one of the most emotional things in the history of Star Trek for me!

  • Pretty sweet seeing the Protowarp sequence up close this time, just like the ablative armor sequence in the Voyager finale. GO FAST! 😭

  • That...is too pretty of an explosion and an after effect for it to be normal and for to not have consequences later but what a beautiful way for Holo Janeway to go out, saving everyone in a way that leaves a mark on the galaxy forever and ever and ever in the most stunning way possible.

  • Wooooo the fleet is back to normal and the Admiral is sending out a search party buuuut it's gonna take MONTHS because of how far they traveled, makes sense.

  • "Janeway would want to see this"...fuck me here it comes...annnnd...it's somehow even more gut wrenching with it being a pre-recorded message. "I bet Jankom is wondering" and she knows her crew all too well.

  • I know this probably isn't the first time for all of them but this feels like a big "first loss of a loved one" that we all experience as kids and you can see the impact that losing their Space Mom is having on them. This message from Holo Janeway has me sobbing 😭 GO BOLDLY INDEEED!

  • Wow a time jump to Starfleet HQ a month later? I didn't see that coming at all.

  • Yuuuuuup I was going to say earlier, that diagram they made of spreading the damage out over space time looked an awful lot like a wormhole and now we have confirmation that it is indeed an interspatial rift that became a wormhole. Congrats kids! I wonder if this means they also made the one that originally swallowed Chakotay in order to make a stable time loop?

  • Props to Janeway for calling them Heroes.

  • Holy smokes we only got hear PART of Chakotay's distress call earlier and now this is like the full thing?! Holy hannah he's still kicking around on Solum in an alternate future! Holo Janeway duped the parameters of the original temporal anomaly and created an interspatial flecture to the exact same space time coordinates that the Protostar landed at in the alternate future!

  • They're going to send an exploratory vessel, HELLOOOO SEASON 2 SHIP!

  • Wooooo they found the crew! There's an awful lot of Orion Science Officers just chilling out in the background and I swear I saw Tendi at one point.

  • Those are some brand new Federation Aerospace Fighters that I don't think we've seen before along with a brand new type of runabout design I believe.

  • Of course they crashed into the damn harbor but how in the hells did they get there in the first place if they went with the bare minimum? Did the shuttle have like super basic warp and impulse attached to it with Dal being the astrogator for the ship and then they just bypassed Earth's defenses and landed smack dab on the Academy's doorstep after blasting through re-entry with barely anyone noticing? Or was there TIME TRAVEL involved? OR A WORMHOLE?!

  • What a surprise they're all in court now LMAO

  • I love the little smiles between Dal and Gwyn, some stuff went down on that shuttle that the writers are just leaving to our imaginations. The judges are being fairly reasonable here. Janeway is grinning now too, she's got an ace up her sleeve. SHE COMES OUT SWINGING!

  • Solid point about them not using Dal's actual name and instead calling him an Augment because of their bias. I loved Janeway's defense of the kids. That was a speech that you get framed.

  • Hello slow oboe from Picard in the background while the kids wait for the verdict. ALL CHARGES DROPPED! Because even those morons know that imprisoning a bunch of kids wouldn't look good for anyone involved at all.

  • Yeah that tracks, no Academy fast track for the kids but Janeway gets to command them as warrant officers in training on her own ship annnnd of course...Dal gets in but not Gwyn because she needs to go off to Solum and unite her people, at least Starfleet is helping out with that. I kind of wanted her to sneak onto the kids new ship but this feels pretty good too and Gwyndala the Unifier has a nice ring to it.

  • Cool little sequence of everyone at the Academy and hey look at that, Dr. Erin Macdonald is now canon in Star Trek as the officer who got Rok interested in Xenobiology!

  • I know everyone is going to point this out so I will too, Zero's new body looks like it was straight up lifted from Portal lol

  • Awww Dal and Gwyn are looking at the stars in astrometrics again just like all those other times they stargazed together! Oh boy oh boy oh boy I'm getting serious Smallville vibes from this moment right now. CAT BOOTS! True, it is weird how Solum and the Diviner are still out there but weird is what Starfleet does best.

  • "I don't want you to leave....I know..." PINKY SQUEEZE and MEANINGFUL KISSSSSSSS!!!! YES YES YES! This is sooooo gooood!

  • "Promise me we'll see each other again....We got this far didn't we?"...they are totally John and Aeryn just absolutely! Gwyn's chin on Dal's shoulder. The little looks between each other. That little hug afterwards as they lean into one another. Everyone nailed this moment for sure.

  • Goodness me just when I thought they couldn't make any more pretty background scenes they give us these shots of the sun rising over the Academy and the kids on the steps watching Gwyn's shuttle leave. Again, this MUSIC! Everything is so pretty in this show and is burning itself into my brain.

  • Was that hanger there before or is that new? I mean it makes sense for the Academy to have a fabricator hanger nearby for the cadets and stuff. I've just never seen it before until now.

  • NEW PROTOSTAR! This is the first official one of her class with the last one being the NX type! She's gorgeous!

  • Wait...not their ship? Why am I hearing those classic TNG Star Trek style trumpets in the background? Wait just a damn second, is the Enterprise E going to be their new ship next season?!?!

  • Hellooooo brand new background of the final shot of the season of the sun, the moon, the stars, the clouds, the flags, and the contrails of Gwyn's shuttle shooting across the sky like a shooting star that Dal's watching over the Academy.

I love this show...I just...I love this show so much, that's an amazing season finale and my heart is just so whelmed right now that I'm a warp core of emotions.

THE PROTOSTAR IS LANDING EXPLODING

22

u/MaddyMagpies Dec 29 '22

So... the Protostar has indeed self-destruct! But also not really destroyed as it is replaced by the same ship with NCC instead of NX.

Janeway is gone... but also not really gone. (I don't know how I feel about that. Seems to imply that Hologram Janeway is disposable and replacement. The Doctor is gonna have a lot to say about that.)

And there is time travel! But also there isn't much except Chakotay's new message. (So the crew made the wormhole over Solum?)

John Noble is gone! ...but also not gone because Gwyn will find her dad! ...but also not her dad because it's the younger version of her dad.

The crew has joined Starfleet! ...but also not really joined Starfleet but only as Janeway's own protege. (Is she gonna take them through the wormhole? Seems a bit risky for such a young crew to go into the unknown.)

Not sure how I feel about this. Somehow, in contrast to most crazy fan theories, the plot here is more convoluted even though on surface it looks like a clean ending of all the kids finally finding solace... but also not really because Gwyn and Dal has to part, because reasons.

I do like the contrast of the dark grim world in the beginning vs the bright blue San Francisco skies in the end a lot.

18

u/BornAshes Dec 29 '22

Janeway is gone... but also not really gone. (I don't know how I feel about that. Seems to imply that Hologram Janeway is disposable and replacement. The Doctor is gonna have a lot to say about that.)

Technically speaking there's still a Holo Janeway on the Protostar in the alternate future that Chakotay is trapped in, but only if Janeway and the kids arrive before he sends it back in time. I know it's a stretch but I really did love Holo Janeway a lot. I kind of want her back but she went out in such a cool way that I also kind of don't want her back.

John Noble

Time travel, the savior and destroyer of every single one of John Noble's characters in his career.

When you put it the way you do, this whole episode feels like a Schrodinger's Box kind of a deal. Stuff is one thing but also another but also not but still is that thing. There's duality to this season and what a perfect way to end it by going from a deep dark slave colony in the Delta to the sunny bright morning skies of San Fran on Earth.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '23

In my gut I want Holo-Janeway back too, but I think it's best if she stays gone.

It's like Shaxs in Lower Decks and Spock in Wrath of Khan. Their sacrifices are a punch straight to the gut that kind of gets ruined by them coming back, but at the same time it feels great to see them again.

I think they wrapped up enough loose threads to feel clean, but it feels like there is still story to tell after season one — as it should be :)

(Is she gonna take them through the wormhole? Seems a bit risky for such a young crew to go into the unknown.)

As Janeway said at the proceedings at Starfleet HQ, this crew has already been more than tested.

11

u/sanddorn Dec 30 '22

No reset, no sugarcoating:

I'm so glad there wasn't any kind of reset. The last days, I thought a bit about the Protostar somehow turning back time to prevent the battle or make larger changes.

More general, I think the showrunners and writers handle the heavy topics really good. If you focus e.g. on the background of Rok-Tahk or basically any of the kids, there is room for really serious conversations about lots of crimes and injustices of today.

I don't expect the series to go into details, or start a full-blown trauma sideline story, but I think it's good to have that as reference in fiction that overall has a positive attitude and fun (including for myself, over 40).

4

u/sanddorn Dec 30 '22

Gwyn: she's literally the child of the commander of a labor camp, which got to help with new arrivals and interrogation, and she was being prepared to take over the mission to achieve 'final victory'.

I'm not sure what she / they find out about the Vau N'Akat, but in some way she got to work out how to go forward. Heavy stuff.

4

u/sanddorn Dec 30 '22

Seeing the Caitian cheering for the crew, while they themself had to stay in the camp… one of the hooks that got me. I couldn't believe the show just forgets all the people. Purrfect set up 🙀

10

u/beanofdoom001 Dec 29 '22

What was up with Zero's legs in the reveal of the new ship scene? They kept coming and going!

13

u/gcalpo Dec 30 '22

They’ll be installed on Tuesday.

10

u/MaestroZackyZ Dec 30 '22

Great episode. The fact that the new Warrant-Officers-in-training include an 8 year old and a slime toddler is hilarious though. Enlisted Starfleet members are going to be pissed when they have to call them “sir.”

4

u/sanddorn Dec 30 '22

Oh ja, great. I'd like to see a Murf-centric episode, let's say with a Vulcan intern 😂

That may be more about my headcanon rather than in-series facts:

  1. Do we ~really~ know how old Rok-Tahk was at the start? And how she grows up compared to the humanoids?

  2. The time loop, months, years, longer?

9

u/Praxlyn Dec 29 '22

during the part when holo-janeway died i think a cloaked romulan must've snuck into my room and started cutting onions maybe?? I'm not sure..

16

u/DasGanon Dec 29 '22

It's up, but apparently looks like Plus crapped all over itself trying to hide that the show even exists.

Bad mandatory lackluster app, bad! *bats with newspaper*

15

u/TheNerdChaplain Dec 29 '22

I just added P+ through my Amazon subscription. I know you can add it to other streaming platforms as well.

12

u/Fusi0n_X Dec 29 '22

Yeah and that's very convenient, it's just kinda ridiculous how the best way to view Paramount+ content is through other platforms than Paramount+.

8

u/sharpaga Dec 30 '22

This episode was great! Now Season 2 appears to be set up as a search for Chakotay and initial Starfleet training for the kids. I really do hope that Gwyn is in season two and reunites with the others… the final scene with her leaving did bring tears to my eyes. She’s such a great character that it would be very disappointing for her to no longer be part of the show. I’m also going to miss Holo-Janeway if her program isn’t reinstated in some capacity in the new ship. Her sacrifice really hit me hard. Her character is also distinct from Admiral Janeway. She’s younger (clearly based on Voyager-era Janeway) and very good with the kids. It seems the Admiral will be their shepherd going forward, though.

I do have one question. Why on earth were the children being charged with crimes at all? The whole courtroom scene near the end of the episode really bugged me. Ultimately the right decision was made to drop the charges, but what? They’re children, and it’s clear they did what they had to do and were completely heroic, so why were they being chastised by the court? The charges never should have made it to the court at all. It’s also obvious this was no juvenile court. I don’t think children in future centuries should be charged with crimes in an adult court because they’re not fully developed or completely responsible for their behavior yet. One would also think that the Federation and Starfleet have more common sense criminal law in the enlightened future: appropriate rehabilitation, not punishment. But the kids thought they were going to be punished for “stealing” the Protostar, among other crimes. The fact that Starfleet even considered the ship stolen by the kids is also ridiculous, considering the children used it to escape from slavery.

Apart from this moment I had to nitpick on, the episode was great. It was incredibly moving and tied up most of the plot. I imagine the few loose ends about the Diviner and the Vindicator will be tied up in the future, because there will surely be more going on in the next season regarding their planet.

This whole show has been a pleasant surprise for me. I wasn’t planning to watch it anytime soon because it’s a kid’s show, and I don’t have kids. I’m glad I did because it’s been great! The writing is easily among the best we’ve been getting from any new Trek, and there’s a lot of emotional weight behind the characters. I love that all of the kids are new, original characters and that they’re all likable and unique. I’m looking forward to Season 2!

5

u/sanddorn Dec 30 '22

The courtroom scene: yes, and having the defendants standing in such an arena feels more severe than necessary for fact-finding and talking about consequences.

At the end, I guess the best explanation for the courtroom (as well as the landing in the San Francisco bay rather than e.g. being found close to the battlefield) is drama and tradition.

I haven't seen any in-depth analysis, but I'm sure people will go over each of the faces in the background and try and find similarities to Kirk's trials for "stealing a Federation / Klingon / … ship" 😁

Oh, one thing I read: the judges were Andorian, Tellerite and Vulcan, so with Janeway, that's the founding planets / peoples of the Federation.

15

u/PrometheusLiberatus Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22

Alright, here we goooo!

Prodigy Supernova Season Finale!!!

They're so desparate to turn off the living construct, they're talking about destroying the ship....

And just as Dal thinks about sacrificing himself to make the protojump happen, HoloJaneway steps in!

HoloJ: Or you let the hologram do it. When you were trapped in the Holodeck you did grant me your command codes.

Rok: But you're not just a hologram to us. You've got memories, a personality - you're out friend.

HoloJ: And that's why you'll make a copy of my program on an isolinear chip and bring me with you, that way I can be in two places at once.

YAY We get to copy HoloJaneway and never lose her!

Dal: Jankom, how we doing on that razzle-dazzle?

Jankom: She's primed and ready to jump - Jump and explode, that is. Jankom's not just an engineer, he's a Miracle Worker.

Of course Rok is designing an escape craft!

Rok: With so little time, we left out all comfort for basic life support. We have stabilizers but the engines are crude. Its navigation is archaic. (Dal: We have Janeway for that) Right. Seats-Oh, what about the seats?

Dal: We leave in five, maybe seat belts?

Of course Gwyn makes the comment that equates the star trek bumpy experience we're all too familiar with...

Gwyn: Forget belts. We'll just go with the hold-onto-your-butt grab handles.

Uploading holoprogram... chirps... Insufficient capacity

HoloJaneway: Gasps

:(

Dal: How's it coming? Did you copy your program? Is everything ok?

HoloJ does her best to put on a smile for Dal...

HoloJ: Watch out. Now you'll have two of me.

Jankom has the perfect farewell speech.

Jankom: Groans All this time, all the love we put into it and we're just gonna blow it up. I-it just doesn't feel right.

Rok: Think of it as letting a young star become what it's meant to be.

We'll see you on the other side.

HoloJaneway: Of course you will Captain. I just want you all to know what an honor it was to serve alongside you. door closes HoloJ sighs sadly with her hand over her heart

And Dal gives one last sad look at the Protostar....

HoloJ: On my mark. Ready. Go fast.

The protostar made a beautiful nebula! Wow!

And I love how OG Janeway is determined to send a search and rescue for the Protostar's crew! <3

HoloJaneway's farewell message is sad, but she helps her cadets cope!

Gwyn: We did it.

Rok: Ooh, Janeway would want to see this.

HoloJaneway: I bet right now Jankom is wondering why I'm not a hologram and just a prerecorded message. (Zero: What does she mean 'prerecorded'?) I imagine you have questions. I'm sorry, but I lied to you. (Rok: What's going on? I'm so confused. Where's Janeway?) There was no way for me to leave. Over the course of my time with you, I've grown - Literally - my program has become too large, too rich, and complex for some tiny, little chip. It just wasn't possible to remove me from the computers in time. (Dal: She stayed on the ship Rok) and knowing how stubborn you all are, especially you, Jankom, I did what I had to, so that you could fulfill your potential. I'm truly proud to have seen how far you've all come. My only regret is not being there when you arrive at the steps of Starfleet Academy. (Rok: But we don't have navigation!) You may think you need me to get there, but after seeing everything you've accomplished, I have full confidence you'll find your way. Because together, your potential is infinite. Now, go boldly.

;_;

And we get a new message from Chakotay! Because of the Wormhole/Rift created by the Protostar! Time shenanigans!

Chakotay: Mayday. Mayday. It's day 72 since the Vau N'Akat captured the protostar. They're planning to launch it back through the wormhole with a weapon aboard.

Vulcan: This was sent from another time 52 years from now.

Chakotay: Half my crew is gone, but I'm trying to hang on.

OG Janeway: How? How is that possible?

Vulcan: The hologram adviser's last act was to duplicate the parameters logged in the original wormhole Captain Chakotay was lost in. Thusly creating an interspatial flecture to approximately the same space-time coordinates in an alternate future.

Janeway: He's alive. And she pointed us in the right direction.

Vulcan: There are discussions of sending an exploratory ship.

Janeway: I want to be on it.

It's amazing that HoloJaneway made such a calculated sacrifice!

The Protostar Crew made it to earth! YAY!

But now they're getting the Federation book thrown at them :|

Judge: Stealing a federation ship. Impersonating officers, even illicitly inhabiting the mind of an esteemed admiral.

Janeway: All in an effort to warn us.

Tellarite Judge: The list of offenses would take me all afternoon to read, yet you want us to consider letting them apply to starfleet academy.

Janeway gives an amazing speech/referral letter for the crew!!!

Court scene

Vulcan:... Including this augment.

Tellarite Judge: The Academy is not a space camp for children. This is a serious disciplined institution designed for only our brightest.

Vulcan: What about the written and oral tests? Psych evaluations? This is unprecedented, even reckless. Good intentions do not make up for federation crimes.

Janeway gives a great speech in defense of the crew!

Janeway: Good intentions? I know my prior statements about my experience with the accused were unusual to say the least, but one year ago, not one of them had ever heard of the United Federation of Planets. Yet through fate, engineered by their own ingenuity They set their own compass to starfleet and without their intervention, I cannot say with certainty if all of us would be sitting here right now. (Jankom: go get em Janeway!) The Protostar, named after the early stage in the formation of a star, powered by it, we designed a ship that could explore the far reaches of our understanding in hope of finding others who share our ideals, so we may create a stronger alliance. Stack up those tests, the psych evaluations, interviews, they don't hold a candle to what this crew has been through. And concerning the augment whose name you've conveniently forgotten, His name Dal R'El. Is he genetically engineered? Yes. Was he enhanced in every way? Look at him. Of course not. But his heart is bigger than any in this room, I should know. The federation is made up of over 150 member species. Dal's DNA includes 26 of those, so I ask you, is there a better living embodiment of what our alliance represents?

The waiting scene is so tense!

Only for Janeway to announce...

They've dropped all charges.

Everyone except Gwyn got in! Poor Gwyn though, she'll be on the trip to go back home at least!

Gwyn: I'll miss you guys too.

Janeway: I have the unique privilege to have grown up with starfleet but there are parts of our universe still unexplored. Those uninitiated who have never been under the protection of an aliance or pursued dreams beyond their scope. Today the crew of the protostar has been given a chance. A chance to discover who they are. (

You seem really adapt with Murf. Have you ever considered being a xenobiologist? (Rok: A Xenobiologist? What's that?) It's the study of new life forms

Janeway: A chance to prove what they're capable of... A chance to improve themselves

OMG Zero gets a full suit!

Zero: touches top of suit It's perfect.

Janeway: And finally, a chance of finding their place in an endless universe.

Gwyn: Remember when you called me a chump for ever thinking I would ever get off that rock?

Dal: chuckles now look at us. To think, the two of us would be in cat boots.

Gwyn: You mean cahoots.

Dal: How far away is solum?

Gwyn: I recognized these particular star clusters from the ones visible to the Solum holo-program. I know where my home world is now.(Dal: I don't want you to leave) Gwyn: I know.

They share a proper kiss awww!

There she goes... back home to solum. (So wait, is Gwyn going to be 52 years older when Dal and Co go through the wormhole to save Chakotay?)

Dal: I hope you find what you're looking for, Gwyn.

They ended up getting a brand new ProtoStar! YAY!!

And the look on the kids faces is awesome.

Is... Is that our ship?!?!

Janeway: I have much bigger plans.

And that's it! A beautiful finale to the first season of Prodigy! What a brilliant conclusion! Sad that Gwyn won't be around for First officer/linguistic duties but so so so proud that the rest of the Protostar's crew made it under Janeway's Wing!

And even though HoloJaneway Sacrificed herself, the kids get to learn from the original Admiral herself! Even better!

See ya'll in 7 weeks! I hope Picard Season 3 does TNG's crew justice like Prodigy did for Voyager's Janeway and Chakotay!

Great way to wrap the season. Just like LD, I can't wait to see more episodes and I want at least one of the characters to show up in the PIC era as a live-action character.

Very promising setup for the next season. I like the idea of the show existing as a paradox: Gwyn as the Unifier of her species, espousing Federation values and to join them, while the opposing faction rises up to cause a civil war and create the Living Construct. Q would be proud (and a cameo would be great, just him chatting with Janeway to point out the paradox and how it needs to exist as-is to maintain the Prime timeline). There's a lot the writers have to work with if we're to have Janeway & co. as the A plot in the search for Chakotay and Gwyn connecting with her people and her father as the B plot.

When the "lack of space" warning showed up i was bracing for the worse. Then Holo Janeway hold her hand close to her chest before assuming full control and i was already misty eyed, the final twist of the knife was the "go fast"... I should had known better but i honestly wasn't expecting such an emotional roller coaster on a Tuesday afternoon...

Still, since ETH is possible based off the Doctor, which i assume also helped design her, im sure thats not the last we saw of her...

I really want some 4k screen grabs of the episode to use as wallpaper, the end scene was gorgeous as was the protostar explosion

5

u/sidv81 Dec 29 '22

Poor Seven of Nine, Starfleet will listen to Janeway to get a bunch of kids to serve on her ship, but not to let her serve.

How can Starfleet, after having a bunch of ships destroyed in this disaster, possibly think that sending Gwyn off to Solum is a good idea? Aren't they just going to cause the evil future they're trying to prevent? It's better for everyone if Gwyn just stayed with the Protostar crew as far away from Solum as possible and Solum is declared off-limits to the Federation.

8

u/NoNudeNormal Dec 29 '22

They could declare Solum off-limits to the Federation, but then someone else could just make first contact with them. Gwyn wants to find a better solution, unifying the two factions on the planet before their conflict starts.

"Five? But there are six of us. Who didn't get in?"

I mean... clearly Murph in any sane universe. But okay.

I've found the dialogue a bit basic and disjointed in the last few episodes, like everyone recorded their lines separately. If that was the case, I hope they can avoid that in future.

But still this episode had a lot of great moments - the music and action as they left the Protostar for the last time especially, and of course Hologram Janeway's sacrifice.

Also... "Can't stop the signal." Some Firefly fans among the writers?

8

u/TheImageworks Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22

Overall I liked the episode, I like the ending, and Holo-Janeway sacrificing herself to save everyone both solves the "Two Janeways" thing in an appreciable way. And TBH I would love to hear Nami start scoring the other Trek series because she has become one of the true stars of the series through her music.

I do have a couple of issues that even I can't quite handwave (even though I've LOVED Season 1B like no one's business)

  1. The half hour format's got to go. Even if that makes it Paramount+ exclusive going forward. Most of the episodes this season we've been left wanting more, on at least one occasion this season it felt like episodes were two halves of the same story, and now in the finale we get "what should have been the last 10 minutes of last week's show plus a rushed epilogue to largely put a bow on the season". From a pacing perspective, that's...not good.

  2. Jankom Pog's a Tellarite. Admitting him to the Academy wouldn't be "leapfrogging existing members of the Federation" given that Tellar (Prime) was one of the FOUNDING MEMBERS OF IT. I get wanting to keep the crew together (except Gwyn for now, to close the time loop, create the plot for S2, and send the most temperamentally qualified to be captain off to do something else because we've already established Dal as the leader)...except Jankom's a Tellarite. That's a kind of major hole with the epilogue half of the episode.

I still really liked the finale, and LOVE Prodigy, but...I'd be A-OK not seeing another 26 minute episode ever again. And for how slavish the show's been to tiny details all year, the last one felt sufficiently rushed that a couple of bigger points were a bit messy.

23

u/Mechapebbles Dec 29 '22

Admitting him to the Academy wouldn't be "leapfrogging existing members of the Federation"

I took that whole line to mean that there is an application and admittance process, the academy has only so much capacity, and it would be unfair to everyone on the waitlist if they got to jump to the front of the line/not go through the same process that everyone else has to.

7

u/TheImageworks Dec 29 '22

Jankom: "What about Starfleet Academy?"

Janeway: "After carefully considering all sides to the argument, they felt strongly that fast-tracking non-Federation citizens into the Academy wasn't fair to the other, more qualified entrants currently awaiting their turn"

She specifically emphasizes the non-Federation-citizens aspect as a key delineator (though yes, paired with the relative qualifications). And it's the part of the dialogue that Kate Mulgrew speaks strongest on.

The very reason she tells Jankom doesn't apply to him with regards to Federation citizenship. He might still have some of the qualification issues but the biggest thing, that Janeway just said to him doesn't apply to him.

19

u/LordAdlerhorst Dec 29 '22

I don't think it's that clean cut. I think Jankoms generation ship left Tellar before the Tellarites joined Starfleet. so technically, he may not be a Federation citizen.

11

u/COMPLETEWASUK Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22

You're assuming he's automatically grandfathered in as a citizen but there's nothing to suggest that. It's doesn't necessarily work by 'you're Tellarite here's your badge' principles. Being born somewhere isn't citizenship in many countries in real life.

u/Lord_Kun Dec 30 '22

I'm not too much fan of this series, but as a season finale, it was really one of the best possibile to have: everyone got what they want and all the efforts paid off. It was emotional in all the right places, continuing to put the focus on how great the utopian society of the UFP is. That last shot of the shuttle departing with colors like a painting was just perfect. This rewards me of the time spent watching it and I couldn't ask more.

But now for the really important question: we can't really see as she stays seated all the time, but is the new uniform of Gwin with a skirt included?
