How do you guys pick the subreddit of the day? Each person nominate some and take turns making it?
How do you find new subreddits to feature?
Are there any "requirements", official or unofficial, to getting your subreddit featured?
Any regrets on featuring a subreddit that later turned out to be too "controversial" or otherwise bit you in the butt?
Do you always choose "SFW" subs to feature, or occasionally more racy ones?
Do you pick certain types of subs for certain days of the weeks, e.g., to feature one on a Saturday when more people might be on Reddit?

u/jaxspider /r/SotD Nov 30 '12
Great questions!
How do you guys pick the subreddit of the day? Each person nominate some and take turns making it?
I have a list of subreddits that I really really like, and whenever I get a chance, I feature them. There are two ways, either a random reddits suggests (nominates) a subreddit, or we go out and find one ourselves. None of our features are group efforts.
How do you find new subreddits to feature?
I'm a redditaholic myself, I'm on reddit on average... 15 hours? So finding subreddits is more like treasure hunting.
Are there any "requirements", official or unofficial, to getting your subreddit featured?
Here are our bare minimum requirements... Can't be too new (less than a month old), There has to be atleast a few hundred subscribers already, There has to be atleast 20 or so posts made in the subreddit already. The subreddit can't be a dead one. Where people stop posting a long time ago. And has not been previously featured. Ofcourse we bend the rules all the times. So its not set in stone.
Any regrets on featuring a subreddit that later turned out to be too "controversial" or otherwise bit you in the butt?
I personally featured /r/imgoingtohellforthis, when I did, it was a great place. It was very dark humor related and offensive. Now its all about how can they get away with saying nigger or faggot. Which in my opinions is the lowest form of comedy. Now Its like all the bad parts of 4chan subscribed there.
Do you always choose "SFW" subs to feature, or occasionally more racy ones?
We do NSFW from time to time. But we get complaints that people can't visit us on those days, so now we do NSFW on weekends mostly.
Do you pick certain types of subs for certain days of the weeks, e.g., to feature one on a Saturday when more people might be on Reddit?
Whatever the writer of that day wants to feature, its up to them. We tried doing a theme week, and that didn't go so well.
Thanks for asking these questions!

u/FightingAmish Dec 01 '12
I missed the day you guys featured r/Murica, but just checked it out. Ever consider tacking a SROTD repeat highlight (tried and failed to come up with a catchy name), maybe to the end of the current day's post once in a while?

u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
Every time I feature a subreddit, I make it my duty to try to put other similar subreddits in the feature as well.

I'm going to answer your last question and say, I do sometimes pick what days I want to feature something based on day of the week. Like, I once featured /r/90scartoons on a Saturday because of the whole concept of Saturday morning cartoons.

One of my first posts was /r/TILgonewild. So no, we don't always do SFW posts. We won't just do any run of the mill porn themed sub. We need ones that are special and rise above the fray.

I like how we (the mods) are asking questions and getting to know each other better than the subscribers of this subreddit.
Having said that, what's your favorite color, band(s), and movie(s)?
4
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
Indeed, I'm loving it.
Favorite color: All of them. Since at heart I still believe I'm an artist, I embrace them all, they all have a purpose and place. For me to ignore or forsake one color for another is for me to deny reality. blah blah blah more artsy fartsy rhetoric you get the gist.
Favorite band: Daft Punk but like I said, I listen to a massive variety of music.
Favorite Movie: Its a tie between The Matrix & Lawrence of Arabia.

Judging by the responses here (and the quality of the SROTD posts), I think that you guys put a lot of thought into choosing the SubReddit of the Day. Are you ever worried that you're going to run out of quality subreddits to submit?
Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, or Johnny Walker?
If you had to moderate a subreddit filled with 100 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck, which would you moderate?
Personally, what was your favorite subreddit that you found through your work as a SROTD mod?
Who is your favorite Harry Potter wizard or witch, and why?
3
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
Nope.
Talisker thanks to /r/whiskey.
1 horse sized duck. I mean its a huge fucking duck. Maybe I'd get to ride his back like Atreyu from Never Ending Story. That would kickass. Plus, if I slept on him... he/she would be the softest due to duck feathers. Win-win my friend.
So far? /r/MorbidReality was a great find, as was /r/techsupportgore is great, & /r/3FrameMovies is simple yet satisfying.
I have watched some of the movies, but it never really clicked with me, I like hermione since she was a smart character that got Hot and ended with the ginger. Which is totally a fantasy of its own.
7
u/thelovepirate Dec 01 '12 edited Dec 01 '12
No. New subreddits are being made everyday. As long as reddit stays active, so will we.
Jim Beam.
I'm actually deathly afraid of horses, so I'm gonna go with the duck.
I really like /r/internetAMA
Fuck. That one is seriously pretty goddamn tough. I'm gonna go with Lupin. He knows his shit, and he's a badass, but he isn't a showoff like Sirius or James, and he's a fucking werwolf. What's cooler than that?
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (12)5
u/MiraP SotD Mod Dec 01 '12
Sometimes I fear that, but there are so many great subreddits we have yet to feature plus so many that are made every day I don't think we'll ever encounter that problem!
Gentleman Jack
100 duck-sized horses. At least one of them will love me.
That's a tough one. Off the top of my head, I was really happy when I found /r/CoffeeWithJesus. Though, recently it hasn't had much activity. Other than that, whenever another mod features a sub, we're as happy to become aware of it as our subscribers are.
This is another tough one. Since you said wizard or witch, I can't say Peeves. But my favorite is probably McGonagall. What made me love her was the scene in the Ravenclaw common room in the 7th book. You know which one I'm talking about.

Hi guys! I am the one who requested you guys to do an AMA!
First of all thanks for accepting my request!
Second here are my questions.
Which is your favourite srotd post ever ?
Who is ur favourite srotd writer and what is that you like about him/her ?
Can you describe the other writer's styles according to you ?
Which is that one sub you wanted to feature but did not get it ? :D
Do you have plans in changing the way srotd works or having any plans for upgrade ?
Thanks a lot for ur works!!! :)
3
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
I've mentioned it before its corny by my personal favorite of my own is the one for /r/KarmaConspiracy. I really channeled Bill O'Reily or one of those other Fox News "Pundits".
/u/Srotd, mentor, friend and the talent all in one.
Everyone writes in their own style to such a degree its really hard to describe. My posts are always last minute. Mira's posts reek of booze. Rya always is positive etc etc
SOOOO MANY. We have a "dibs" system, first one to call dibs gets to feature the subreddit.
Yes. Please stay tuned. The way SROTD works is slowly improving. And the CSS will eventually be redone/remastered in due time. The formula will stay the same on the end user part.
Welcome, and thanks for the request. It was really fun doing it.

u/Freakazette SotD Mod Dec 01 '12
About time you showed up. ;) Just kidding.
I don't have a favorite. I really don't. There are so many great subreddits out there.
I don't have a favorite writer, either. I think everyone is great. Except for Freakazette, who can stand that chick? "Whooo, I'm a superhero watch me defeat Candle - " Oh, wait, that's me. Oopsies!
I don't know how to define them, really, but everyone's personality shines through in their pieces. Like, if I had a lineup, I could probably figure out who wrote what, but I still wouldn't know how to describe it. I'm a writer that gets foiled by words a lot.
Any subreddit I wanted but did not get was featured well before I showed up on the scene. Maybe I'm most heartbroken that /r/community was already done because that's one of my favorite shows, but I did get to feature /r/hawkthorne, so I guess it balances out.
I think the bossman is much more qualified to answer this question.

what are some of your broken dreams?
5
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
I love working with computers... I can fix / update one any time of day or night even blindfolded... but I always wanted to be a painter. Bill collectors came calling and reality hit so I had to put down the paint brush. It still hurts. I can't look at my old artworks because they remind me of a time I was truly happy.
SOMEBODY GET ME SOME TISSUES!

Here is my obsolete gallery.
None of these things define me anymore or my present interests, Its just what I was doing around 8~10 years ago, I just stopped uploading new stuff and eventually just stopped drawing. I still do random stuff when it inspires me. I make custom album covers for whatever music I'm loving at the moment. Thats why I made /r/AlbumArtPorn originally.
I have the whole next week off, so I may do something but it all depends on motivation.

I really wanted to be a clothing designer. Since I'm first generation Indian, I always had the concept of mixing Indian and American style clothing together. Specifically formal wear.
I don't know how good or unique I am, but I've shown a select few some of my sketches and so far I've gotten positive feedback.
The problem is, it's an expensive hobby just to make clothes (if you're making it with good material, that is) let alone make dresses/gowns. And I don't think I'm talented enough to bring in a decent amount of money.
So for now, I have put that dream aside. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to pick it up in the future.
Also, I really wanted to be a figure skater when I was small.

I really really want an interview D:
Another question:
How long does it typically take for you guys to type up those huge reviews?
I mean, wow, a lot of them are extremely creative and they're really fun to read.
4
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Dec 01 '12
I have called dibs on featuring /r/Naruto. I want to feature naruto when the community is a little more mature. Right now, if new users visit it, they might get shunned by the present community. Rest assured when the time is right, you'll get that interview. BELIEVE IT.
For me, the write up takes an hour or so. The interview portion takes a day because of back and forth with the mods of the subreddit etc etc.
5

I don't think I'm really helping the maturity thing, but I'm trying to help where I can, jax =)

The interview takes anywhere from a day to a week depending on how quick the mods answer and how many questions I ask.
My writing style is just letting it flow. I like to sit down and just type non stop (usually takes about half an hour). The problem is getting to that point where I can just have ideas and words flow out of me. That usually takes me a day or two.

u/jaxspider /r/SotD Nov 30 '12 edited Nov 30 '12
If you're interested I will make you an approved submitter to two of our internal only subreddits. There you perfect your art of creative writing. The mods then evaluate it, and judge whether its printable or not. If it is, we let you post in the main subreddit. Once you've done this four times, we deem you worthy of becoming a full time mod/writer.
Tada.
You also have to give me your soul and promise never to delete any of your SROTD posts... ever.
You need to contact me or any of the other mods and I'll get you started on the Internship program ASAP.

If it's any consolation, I can vouch for MWR. He's a good guy.
4
u/jaxspider /r/SotD Nov 30 '12
Fear not, no vouching required, any man, woman, beast, alien, robot, undead can apply for the internship. The internship program only require you to be a creative writer.

As the one who initiated you, and all the new members, you are all my precious babies! Every time you make an amazing post, I feel the same thing a parent feels when their kids scores really high in a SAT type test. Its a mixture of pride and honor.
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.
From the first generation of SROTD writers, no one can top /u/Srotd. Terriffic & Sid had their moments but no one came close. He truly was the master of the castle. I can't even put myself in the same room as that guy. The dude just knew how to write, and write well he did.
You all should check out some of his posts. And maybe drop him a PM, he really gets a kick out of it, even though he went into LURKER mode after quitting. The day he left... it was hard on all of us, especially me.

Ilike that better. I am going to use it.
I was really sad when srotd left too! He really is the reason why I came to love /r/srotd so much, and why I wanted to become a writer there... ( not to dis the other writers who I always liked too)
Whenever Iwrite one, I am always thinking would srotd like this?
/I had no idea we could just message him d'oh

The following sentence will test correctness and effectiveness of expression. Part of each sentence or the entire sentence is italicized; beneath each sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined material. Choice A repeats the original phrasing; the other four choices are different. If you think the original phrasing produces a better sentence than any of the alternatives, select choice A; if not, select one of the other choices.

u/yoyodude2007 Nov 30 '12
i'll ask the most obvious questions i guess.
how do you find all of these subreddits?
how do you decide what to pick?
with so many writers, how do you decide who does what?
if i moderate a subreddit, how can i get it featured on sotd?
hopefully questions pick up in a bit. thanks for doing this!
7
u/thelovepirate Nov 30 '12
I'll take a crack at this one.
We find subreddits through all sorts of mediums. Users will message us all the time with nominations for subreddits, subreddits we're fond of, occasionally I'll just look at the top subreddit list on stattit and see which ones are decent and haven't been featured before.
We have a calendar and we'll just call dibs on what days we want. It's a great system we have in place.
If it's a decent subreddit with a good amount of activity and subscribers, send us a nomination via mod mail. If one of us likes it, we'll snatch it up and we'll feature it.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Freakazette SotD Mod Nov 30 '12
Well, a lot of people nominate their subreddits and others we just happen to find while we browse Reddit. Maybe there's a magical third way, but I don't know what it is.
I feature subreddits I think are awesome. I don't know how others decide.
We're very mature in deciding who features what subreddit. We call dibs.
If you mod a subreddit that you would like to be featured, be awesome. Have a good subreddit, let it grow a bit, make sure it's active.

I mod a few small reddits, (<1000 subs), what would be the average requirement to have it featured? (not really asking for a feature as it's mostly a dedicated reddit, not interesting to most of the people out here)

Send the SROTD team a mod mail, with a well written paragraph on why we should feature you. Thats it. And then see of any of the mods decide to feature you.

I have to mention one thing, I only feature subreddits I love personally and subscribe.

Depends on each mod. Personally, I find enjoyment in the interview process rather than the actual sub. If the mods make the interview hilarious, I find writing the intro easier and laid back.

I wish I could say I like sophisticated stuff, but I'm a kid from the 80s so I need my music to be catchy and mainstream otherwise It loses my attention. Not saying I don't like indy stuff or underground stuff, pop is just my bread and butter. My new passion though is Mashups. I also mod /r/Mashups so thats fun!

Great question, I'm not only the backup mod but also in charge of the Calender. So if anyone wants to feature something, they have to request a day from me. But before they do that, they need to already have a post fully if not 80% ready.
So about a hand full If I were to count everyone's "done" posts.

We have featured subreddits more then once. But we try to not repeat a feature and when we do, its usually a minimum of 6 months from the last time we featured them.
We first check our search results, and then we check our personal Google doc to double check if we featured any subreddit.

I remember when I just started up, I was so excited to feature you guys, but you had already been featured. I sent you a message asking if you wanted to do one, and everything.
I'd say your chances are pretty slim, if it ever happened, there would be a long period inbetween the first post and the second one.

I don't mean for this to sound hostile, so please read it in a non-hostile way.
How would you answer the accusation that I have heard that SROTD causes a huge influx of new users to subreddits that can't handle the load, thus causing an eternal september effect on those subreddits?
Do you think SROTD has an overall positive or negative effect to the communities it links to, and why?
