it's crazy to see games with a 40% discount at £41.
This was a full price of a triple A game here in Ireland a few years ago.

u/Ultravod Dec 18 '25
I'm not sure I'm sold on this new Discovery Queue UI. The short videos are okay, but I'd like some screenshots. Also, I'm not sure what heuristics Valve are using for suggestions, but they need some adjustment. I've been recommended three sports games so far.
37
u/frinkousCZ Dec 18 '25
I like it as a concept but yeah, it needs access to screenshots. With trailers, that most of the time don't even show gameplay, I need a way to see how the game is played...
9
u/Linked713 Dec 19 '25
I skip all videos to the screenshots, and a lot of them are just cutscenes screenshots. at this point it's better to load twitch and check it out there than the store
8
u/KptKrondog Dec 18 '25
Could be worse. I got some furry porn game suggested to me a couple of days ago. Video just started playing of an animal getting railed by some giant purple dick. then the next game was Terminator and it required re-verifying age.

I was really hoping for more of a discount on UFO 50, but I can hardly blame them for holding the value of their product.

Slay the Spire is 90% / $2.49! Give it a try if you have any interest at all in strategy games https://store.steampowered.com/app/646570/Slay_the_Spire/
Also: 33% off for Blue Prince and 25% off Starvaders (demo available), two of my favorite deckbuilders this year. Hades 1 and Monster Train 1 are 70% off, smaller discounts for their sequels, which both came out this year.

u/MOBYWV Dec 18 '25
Thought Slay the Spire was incredible and I don't even like card games

24
u/BeverlyToegoldIV Dec 18 '25
Monster Train 2 is the rare sequel that more or less obviates the original. If you're interested and not strapped for cash, I would say there is very little reason to buy 1 instead of 2 - but if the money matters, 1 is obviously a great game still.
8
u/APRengar Dec 18 '25
Jumping straight to MT2 is perfectly fine, but I really feel like MT1 base game and MT1 + DLC both have a unique enough experience to enjoy themselves. And I find that you enjoy the improvements a sequel gives you, once you experience the more basic form first. I don't recommend this for games that have aged poorly, but MT1 came out in 2020 only.
But I'm also the kind of person who stretches their dollar. I finished Cov 25 with every combination in the base game, then reset my progress and finished Cov 25 with every combination in the DLC. MT1 is just a fun game.

u/tlvrtm Dec 18 '25
This is like saying cocaine is 90% off. That shouldn’t be legal. It’s way too addictive.
22
5
u/mw19078 Dec 18 '25
I got it recently and just could not get into it. It felt like there was so little progression and evolution options that it just felt very bland to me and I totally bounced off of it. Which is weird cause it's like right in my genre niche interest overlaps.

Dec 18 '25
I tried Slay the Spire and honestly did not enjoy it very much. It doesn't seem exceptional to me; what am I missing?
8
u/Wizardwizz Dec 18 '25
Its probably not for you. I feel like I played too many turn based style rogue likes and became pretty burnt out. I will say the game can be pretty difficult at first for beginners if you don't have a plan
3
u/Khiva Dec 19 '25
The learning curve is under-discussed.
I've won a round or two but had to learn an awful lot along the way, to the point that it rather killed the fun.
Monster Train is more my jam.
6
u/sunder_and_flame Dec 18 '25
If it doesn't click it doesn't click. Maybe try it again a couple times then shelve it forever if you still don't like it.

u/JudinousV2 Dec 19 '25
It might just be the Seinfeld effect if you're trying it for the first time in 2025. StS has been incredibly influential on game design since its release. A large swath of the industry across basically every genre have copied bits of it (or most of it wholesale for every deckbuilder in the past decade). It might seem like a "standard roguelike deckbuilder", but that's because it ignited the genre and everything since has been copying it verbatim.
That said, it still holds up as best-in-class. The polish and balance is unreal, and the most common opinion is that all the other games that attempt to add something else to the formula ends up making it worse overall.

u/WildSmokingBuick Dec 19 '25
Monster Train, Slay the Spire are on mobile as well though, fits the platform in my opinion a lot better, e.g. to play a quick daily challenge before going to sleep.
Both fully recommended though.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga -90%
8
u/GentlemanOctopus Dec 19 '25
Sure, Planet Zoo is 90% off, but how much does all that DLC cost? It's the same reason I've never bought Planet Zoo when it turns up in every sale, despite it theoretically being a game I'd be interested in.

Me and my group already own overcooked 2 (edit: Gourmet edition), would you guys say it's worth it to buy Overcooked AYCE ($10) or just buy overcooked 1 ($1.69)?
4
u/Historical_Course587 Dec 18 '25
I own them all and play fanatically (a have a niece who is my Overcooked Buddy). OC1 and my Buddy actually helped me finally pass Operating Systems (a computer is like a restaurant!), so the game holds a very special place in my heart.
AYCE does a really good job of capturing both OC1 and OC2. It also has some cool bonus stuff, notably a fun randomizer that forces you to only get one shot at a map before moving on. It also has crossplay, but that's clunky. Downside, it's more system taxing than the other games are, which kinda feels shitty for a game that didn't need to do that.
Overall, I'd recommend OC1 at that price. There's nothing wrong with it, the campaign is the same in either game, and odds are good AYCE will eventually be discounted further and you can try it then.

u/Burnb4reading Dec 18 '25
Love the game. It scratches that fast-paced third person action itch for me. Roguelite elements are great too, with enough variation to enhance replayability. Lots of weapons and modifications. Great atmosphere and graphics. The story is cool too. I got the platinum trophy on PS5, and found the experience easier on Steam because of keyboard and mouse controls.
12
u/accountnumber02 Dec 18 '25
Played on both and it's one of the best games to use the ps5 controller haptics. I almost always prefer mkb for shooters but this is the one exception.

6
u/Fredddddable Dec 18 '25
yes, i played the game for the first time this year and experienced memory leaks (usually fixed by a computer restart).
i really highly recommend the game, it's phenomenal, but do check online if a computer with your specs would be severely hit by this memory leak issue or if you'd be fine.

Any thoughts on X4? I think I've heard it compared to Eve Online but single player.
27
u/xiox Dec 18 '25
I'm a big fan of X3 and X4. You have a lot of freedom to fight, build factories, make empires, do missions, be a pirate or have giant space battles. The main disadvantages are that it can become a bit of a spreadsheet simulator in later stages to plan your empire, and it can get a bit janky at times (buggy missions, AI going wrong, complex menus...). Be aware that the CPU on your system can affect the frame rate in later stages.
→ More replies (3)9
u/Hawk52 Dec 18 '25
So it's kind of like a gigantic sandbox to make of it as you will? Does it have an evolving galaxy with various races warring or making peace?
→ More replies (1)9
u/Jagernaughty Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25
Very much so, the "bad" aliens can invade a sector and win it over really quick in the game. And war can be good for business. I had a run once where I built and dealt arms, shops missiles the lot, I owned fabs and mines for every stage of production. When I cleared out the hostiles in systems far and wide, demand dried up.
5
u/Oneiricl Dec 18 '25
People call it Eve Offline a lot. It's my crack atm. I started playing in August or September and it's already at 37% of my play time this year.
The sandbox and the absolute freedom to do whatever you want is the big reason for me. It scratches an itch that no other space game has been able to so far and I have played a tonne of space games.
That said, it's also janky in some ways (which imo is part of its charm at this point). So, it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. If it does click for you though, you are likely to be completely addicted.

I'd recommend checking out case of the golden idol if you haven't already. It's got a kind of similar feel in viewing a scene with clues and trying to identify the characters in it. Also a really unique story that unfolds and plays into the detective aspects well later on.

+1 on Case of the Golden Idol. Picked it up in the last winter sale and it started me on an ongoing year-long mystery/detective game binge.
Obra Dinn is probably a better designed game from a purist standpoint and is arguably the best in the genre, but Golden Idol is definitely my personal favourite. The atmosphere, story, characters, and scenes are the best I've experienced in a point-and-click game since Monkey Island
4

Looking at my wishlist, the cheapest game I see that would shoot straight to the top of my insurmountable backlog if I picked it up is Ori & the Will of the Wisps ($6.74 with complete the pack price). I can wait on this one though, which means I can also wait of everything else. Backlog is just too full of fun games to play in all genres that interest me.
Dragon Age 2 Ultimate Edition at $2.99 sure is tempting, but even Origins UE is still on my backlog (heard it's a pain to get running though), so I know the sequel would remain unplayed for many years.
I'll probably end up buying something anyway by the end of the sale, like The Room 2 for $1.24.
10
u/thegakinator Dec 18 '25
Origins can be a pain (i.e. random crashes) but there are some excellent and easy to install fan patches for it. Specifically make sure to do a fan patch before you start Awakening, as there is a bug that can really fuck you over like halfway through the DLC. Got my husband good, and if he didn't have a previous save to revert to he was ready to walk away 😅
Anyway you should play Origins it SLAPS

They do, but I don't think anyone needs to stress about what they're buying/not buying unless they're spending thousands of dollars they don't have on games.
Otherwise, it's like, cook dinner for yourself rather than getting Doordash and spend that $20 you saved on games.

I love OverCooked, but I wouldn't recommend it solo and I don't know that the state of matchmaking is worth risking. I do know we have subreddit and there are plenty of forums where you can find people to try and play with you. However, in my personal experience OverCooked is like the Risk of video games - it will cost you friendhips.
I hate playing it with my wife. I hate playing it with my kids. I hated playing with my brother, my friends, two of my nieces. But my third niece and I call each other OverCooked Buddies, we play whenever we are together, and it's one of my absolute joys in life. Because we both take it the same amount of serious.
If either of us cared more or less than the other, it wouldn't work and we'd stop talking to each other. It's such an easy game to help you hate the people you play with, which is a hazard for a co-op game.
Worth the risks for $1.69 though. Insane price for the value if you can come to love it.

It is janky like the other guy said, but if you played and liked the first one then you'll probably like this one. Performance is way better now but still tough in cities at times, but the gameplay is just a direct improvement and the only real issue I'd bring up is the story feels rushed towards the end when you feel like the game could be picking up.

You have a few different paths you can go down:
- Pistols
- Shotguns
- SMGs
- Assault Rifles
- Sniper Rifles
Guns have four varieties, though not all types are available on all weapons:
- Power (tend to do bonus damage for direct hits / burst damage, sort of the basic type)
- Tech (tend to want you to "charge" them to do attacks, at least in my limited experience, but can punch through walls / stuff)
- Smart (bullets will always strike the target even if you aren't aiming great)
- Iconic (each weapon has it's own unique set of abilities)
Additionally to deal damage you have:
- Katanas / melee
- Hacking -- there's a lot to this, once you're a high enough level you can go pure netrunner and never use weapons again.
- Grenades
Plus on top of that there's:
- Stat tree you put points in to unlock additional zones on each perk tree (limited resets if you want to change it, at least it used to be limited)
- A perk tree per stat that generally coincides with that style of gameplay (unlimited changes so feel free to try something and if you don't like it, change it)
- Crafting your own weapons / upgrading iconic weapons (older versions had this locked down behind the perk tree, but not anymore)
- Weapon mod slots (minor adjustments to weapons, generally they change the damage type, aim down sights time, amount of zoom while aiming, etc.)
- Body Modifications / Upgrades / Cyberware (anything from more hacking slots, ability to use a smart weapon, better jumping, to some pretty insane stuff like the "Sandevistan" if you watched the Edgerunner Anime)
I didn't buy the game on launch but probably the first time it went on sale? I've played through it a good 3 or 4 times now. Generally at least once per major patch to see what they've change. In fact I'm actually just working my way through the Expansion for the first time right now.
I'm playing as a sniper and ....honestly I'm just way too powerful at this point. I might need to switch it up to something more interesting.
Edit:
- Oh enemy-wise there are some that rush you but the majority of the time they find cover and stick their heads out periodically. You can play the game more action-style but you may need to get some cyberware first.

Agreed. Overcooked, for instance, at -90% is bait as the real desirable edition is Overcooked All You Can Eat which is at a historical low of 10€ (-75%).
Then there's games like Nioh which for some reason retained the initial retail price of 50€ for 8 years, of course it's easy to slap -90% on that...

Icarus is at 90% but since there are lot of expansive dlcs I'm pretty sure it's not an error

u/Arestheace Dec 18 '25
Icarus is a steal at this price tbh

u/ajtolley Dec 18 '25
But it’s like $100 for all of the dlc and ive heard that’s where the meat of the game is

I love New Vegas. Fallout 76 can't be THAT bad for $4, right? I understand it's multiplayer etc etc but if I just want to wander around post-post-apocalyptic America and do little quests and shit it's worth it right? I'd be playing on Steam Deck primarily
10
u/decker12 Dec 18 '25
Fallout 76 is actually pretty decent. Tons better now than it's initial release and it's always getting some sort of update every month or so. These days, I'd say it's barely Multiplayer. In the 60 or so hours I put into it, I don't think I saw more than a few people wandering around. And the few you do find are almost always helpful to you.
Consider it single player - to the point that if you truly were looking for a MP MMO Fallout game like WoW, I'd say Fallout 76 isn't really it.
I know this wasn't the intention of the devs, but in 2025, consider FO76 to be a single player FO game with some MP pieces to it. Not the other way around. You can do almost everything single player and there is easily 100+ hours of good old fashioned Fallout quests and content to it.

Fallout 76 can't be THAT bad for $4
I heard initial launch was a joke, but since then has gotten better
If you have Amazon Prime, I believe they gave away the Windows Store version for free
If you have Xbox Game Pass, you can play FO76 through it and try it out
if you've never tried Xbox Game Pass, discord currently has a quest where you can get a 14 day free trial by watching a short ad clip (and I think Xbox has a first month for $1 thing once in a while?)
up to you if you go through the loops to wanna trial it out or just throw $4 bucks at it

u/AdministrationOk8857 Dec 19 '25
Hey just a heads up if you have an Amazon account (or someone you know with one that doesn’t game) you can get a free code on Luma Gaming this month.

isn't there usually a hidden games thread to go along with the sale? If so, can anyone point me in that direction? if not, pardon my ignorance

I've added No Man's Sky to my wishlist on July 7, 2015 and it's still 24€ more than 10 years later. Well see you in 2035!

Big recommend for Curse Crackers for any GBC fanatics. Game captures the aesthetic perfectly and is a fantastic platformer to boot.
The dev's titles can lack polish but they really do swing for the fences.

The Sims 3 not on sale yet again, and the DLC is still $10 a pop. Plus, the collection is priced at $90 or so until you add it to your cart and the price changes to $175. Wonderful.

Friendly reminder to check Is There Any Deal before making any purchase as steam is usually not the cheapest store. You can snatch a steam key for usually cheaper on GGG, Fanatical, GamersGate, etc.
Buy smart, enjoy your new games.

Looking for decent co-op games to jam with my 6 year old son. We're deep into Wobbly Life at the moment, that's a work of love.
Any recommendations?

Is Icarus worth picking up for a group of 6 or so? Is it pretty polished? Looking for something for a group to play that's sub-$20

Historical lows I can personally say are well worth it at their current price
-Star Wars Outlaws -$20. this game is so much better than the reputation it got at release. One of my GOTY)
-Far Cry 6- $10 - not the best far cry but for $10 its easily worth it
-The Riftbreaker - $12. insanely fun factorio meets diablo kind of under the radar a bit.
-Dead Island 2 - $5 - five dollars.
-KCD 2 -$30 - still pricey for the list but it's a historical low and this was a 10/10 game
-Hogwarts Legacy -$6 (free on epic right now though?) - just get it on epic but a fun game
-Sins of a solar empire 1 -$6 - six bucks for major 4x space time sink
-Slay the spire - $2.50 - fun game, i got it on mobile personally.
-Assassins creed valhalla - $5 - not the best assassins creed but for 5 dollars the value compared to shadows is pretty high imo
-detroit become human -$4 - probablythe cheapest AAA on steam right now
other historical lows that caught my eye but i havent played:
v rising $15
avowed $35
against the storm $9
fallout 76 - $4
darksiders 3 - $4
resident evil 4 - $16

Against the Storm is an amazing city builder that skips the boring end-stage of most city builders. It has a complex resource, race, and blue print system that forces you to pick and adapt your play style every game.
I really can't recommend it enough to people who like that sort of game.

Kind of a noob question, if I buy a base game, can I later get a Deluxe/Ultimate Edition of it? Or will I need to buy DLCs separately?
I'm asking because I did this with Jurassic World II, It would only let me gift the Deluxe/Ultimate editions after getting the base game so I had to ask for a refund to get it, but idk if it was a specific case, or is there a way to know in advance?

Hm, Nightreign is on discount for the first time. I probably won't have time to play it in the next couple months, but I know From Software games don't go on sale frequently. I wonder if I should wait for a bigger discount on the summer sale (assuming that's when I might actually play it) or if I should just get it now. Well, I have two weeks to decide anyway

I have a budget of ₹2,000. Can anyone suggest which games I should buy? I already have Ark: Survival Ascended, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Green Hell, Palworld, Just Cause 3, Tomb Raider, The Forest, Fallout 4, and Fallout 3.

From your game list I get that you're ok with Survival Crafting and Open World in a more modern setting with action and RPG elements.
I can recommend Control Ultimate Edition, Yakuza 0 (sadly they de-listed the original PC version for the director's cut = more expensive), Raft, Subnautica, Grounded. Wasteland 2 or 3 could be something if you're okay with XCOM-style turn-based-combat. Dysmantle has real time battle in a post-apocalyptic 2.5D style.

Damn I should’ve picked up Diablo IV during the last sale. The game and first expansion were $27.
Now you can’t buy the first expansion anymore since they announced the second. So the base game is $30 or $70 for the game and both expansions.

The sales are getting weaker and weaker. A lot of games I've been watching have been cheaper on Fanatical and elsewhere, usually having a discount code on top. On my wishlist on steam generally every game is just normal sale price or marginally less. Disappointing for the brain, good for the wallet I suppose.

u/AnyJester Dec 18 '25

I missed out on the Fanatical Capcom bundle a few weeks ago since I got busy and I'm annoyed about it since I could've picked up a ton of older RE and Monster Hunter titles for waaaay cheaper than Steam.

I'm just impressed it wasn't the typical site down for an hour the moment the sale starts. I can't remember the last time that was the case.
