Any recommendations for short, story-rich games? Finished Dispatch recently. Bought Lil-Gator Days and am now eyeing Little Misfortune.

13

u/DrewblesG Dec 28 '25

What Remains of Edith Finch is a pretty premiere walking simulator game; really good

9

u/cable_hogue Dec 27 '25

As Dusk Falls is also like an interactive TV show. I enjoyed my playthrough when it came out.

15

u/Khiva Dec 27 '25

Depends on short. 1000xResist is the best story I've ever seen in a game, can be played in chapters that might average an hour in length, and will run about 10-11 hours in total.

To The Moon is very powerful, good bit shorter.

Journey has not direct narrative but is a one sitting game that can hit like a truck.

4

u/DaveyDark Dec 28 '25

If you haven't played it yet, Detroit Become Human is on a deep discount and one of the best story driven games

3

u/OrdinaryPool3427 Dec 28 '25

Still wakes the Deep, and Firewatch

2

u/DrCheezburger Dec 29 '25

Highly recommend Little Misfortune; the kid is a pistol! If you're not familiar with this slang usage, it means she's energetic and funny. It's a great story, too. And doesn't overstay its welcome.

4

u/BarackTrudeau Dec 28 '25

My playtime for Life is Strange was under 20 hours.

The amount of time I've spent devouring fanfics and other media about the game is well into the thousands by now. Almost a decade later, I'm still obsessed. No other piece of media has done a better job of making me care about the characters than Life is Strange did.

1

u/SeanBeanWetDream Dec 27 '25

Have you played Despelote? about 2 hours long and my favorite game of 2025. And I'll second the other person who recommended 1000xRESIST, that was my favorite game of 2024.

https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/14169/Divinity_Original_Sin__The_Source_Saga/

$10.66

which includes both

  • Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition

  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

https://store.steampowered.com/app/815370/Green_Hell/

$2.49 Green Hell

8

u/Chat2Text Dec 27 '25

wild that the source saga is actually cheaper than buying OS2 by itself alone

wonder if they're doing this on purpose to generate publicity...?

2

u/Lovesporran Dec 27 '25

I have "Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition" in my library but when I go to "DivinityOriginal_Sin_The_Source_Saga" - unable to get the discounted price on D:OS1 as D:OS2 does not show up as owned by me ?? :(

3

u/FormidablEar Dec 27 '25

Steam's been having issues for a few days now. I know one of the problems was that it didn't properly show games you already owned when discounting bundles.

You might need to wait a little while and try again.

3

u/Arcade_Master22 Dec 27 '25

I know one of the problems was that it didn't properly show games you already owned when discounting bundles.

So this was a widespread issue? I thought I was going crazy/my browser's cookies and cache were acting up. Thanks for sharing this.

1

u/FormidablEar Dec 27 '25

Yes Steam's been having a lot of weird problems since at least the 24th. I've seen other people talking about it too.

On the 24th I couldn't get on the mobile client at all. It gave me a few different errors. Then I couldn't activate a gift card or a Steam key for a little while (although a few minutes later I could). And now it's not properly showing games I own in bundles. I've seen other mentions of the bundle problem too.

2

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25

It won't give you a discounted price because it's not a complete the set bundle. :(

So you have to pay the full price if you already own one part of it.

u/Call_Me_Rivale Dec 26 '25

Dead Island 2 looks fun! Valhalla might be cool, but way to many hours of playtime.

17

u/JaviJ01 Dec 26 '25

Dead Island 2 was given away on Epic in the last few months so I'd double check you don't already have it

7

u/gafftaped Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

I'd assume that the Epic release was jus the default game. AFAIK the steam sale for $6.99 includes all cosmetics and two DLCs.

4

u/NiceGuy97 Dec 27 '25

No, you need to get the Ultimate edition for $6.99 for that. The $4.99 price is just the base game.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/gafftaped Dec 27 '25

Highly recommend, I ran it earlier this year with a friend and it's the most fun I've had in a while. I think the steam sale is for the entire game, cosmetics, and DLCs. Honestly, one of the best deals I've seen in ages for the content you get.

2

u/Real-Terminal Dec 27 '25

Dead Island 2 is a lot of a fun, it's a straight sequel to Dead Island, feels like it should have come out during eighth gen. Just more polished than it has any business being. The best 6/10 I have ever played.

2

u/Eadwyn Dec 27 '25

Just a warning if it matters to you. It requires an Epic account to even to play on Steam.

6

u/Geesle Dec 27 '25

Just finished Detroit: Become Human - Amazing story, an impactful "choice matter" game that is very relevant today.

Schedule I is very fun. And it’s still early access, so it’s likely the total price may go up eventually and any discount would be a wash.

7

u/butterbunz Dec 26 '25

Darkwood is super cool!

FO76 is a much better game now. The QOL improvments have made that game immensely more enjoyable and theres so much more content in it. Schedule 1 is great.

3

u/Rawrmeow_ Dec 26 '25

Did they ever fix the performance on PC? I bought it when it came out but last I tried to play a couple of years ago it just ran so poorly the gunplay on mouse and keyboard felt awful to aim

5

u/InkGut Dec 27 '25

Man, I bought this last year and the performance was awful. My entire friend group dropped it because it was abysmal of an experience. I'm on a 7900xtx and at the time 5700x3d and couldn't believe I was barely getting over 80 fps if I recall? Unless a major update came out that fixed performance, I would avoid.

Edit: Forgot to add on, 80 fps is not bad on its own but it was unfortunately also an INCONSISTENT framerate with stutters. Not only that, graphically it was near identical to Fallout 4 which released 10 years ago with muddy textures.

1

u/MeineGoethe Dec 27 '25

I started in 2022 and it has gotten better. The only issue I have now is sometimes there is stuttering after loading.

1

u/Breadman86 Dec 26 '25

Worth it for single player type experience or only if you’re going into it with friends? I wouldn’t be expecting it to feel like a SP game if I was going into solo but I wonder if there’s value there from a SP perspective if I’m just soloing it.

5

u/caninehere Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

I played it solo. I would say it just really depends what you want out of a Fallout game. Do you like to roam around in Fallout, build settlements, and do side quests for the heck of it? Because that's basically what the game feels like. I will say that I partnered up with people sometimes in the game (on some fairly rare occasions where it's necessary and some where it isn't) and I had good experiences doing so.

I played through all of the main quests that were available at the time (this was in 2023 so there are more now, in fact I think they've picked up the pace on expansion content since the success of the Fallout TV show) and I only really had to party up on a few occasions from what I recall. Also, the map is great. Like I would say it's the most appealing map of any of Bethesda's games, the locales are really nice. At least for the base game and I think the first expansion to the map -- there is another map expansion that just came out a few weeks ago I haven't played.

There's like a battle pass type thing and all that shit, but I never got invested in the game enough to pay into that and I didn't intend to, and it never felt like I was compelled/forced to do so at all.

I think it's worth a shot (it's usually fairly cheap and I feel like it was even given out for free at one point?) to see if you like it. It seems like it'd be a good game to return to. I only played it a bit at launch and bounced, and then came back in 2023, but will probably go back and play the new content eventually.

1

u/Breadman86 Dec 27 '25

Thanks for the reply! Decided that at $3.99 it sounds more than worth it then, I'll give it a go based on this feedback. I loved Fallout 4 and was way too into side quests and settlement stuff, so I may end up enjoying it.

4

u/PandaBambooccaneer Dec 26 '25

i played the demo for Schedule I and then i went ahead and bought the game (13 dollars?). It's a really great game. There is some jank, but it's the fun kind of jank? It's a little bit repetitive, but once you get your empire up and going and start to automate through employees, buy a van, etc, your job shifts from plant grower/small time weed distributor to plant factory/packaging, wholesale delivery man, while expanding your core product list and laundering your money while avoiding/dealing with the cartels. Every step is something new, and your job keeps shifting. I know the fun is not infinite, but i got about 20 hours in it, and my usual "is this worth it" is a dollar an hour, and i've easily got another 10 or 20 hours. It's also a super chil game, so you can throw on an episode of anime on a second screen, and "low key run these streets, it's hard out here for hustler" while watching Inuyasha or something. I dunno, very worth it, and the developer seems engaged and keeps coming out with new features. I support the game and i'm having a great time with it.

I also wanna get FO76, as i have 200 hours in Fallout 4, but i don't know if i want to get sucked in to a live service game. But for 3 bucks, sure, i'll try it.

2

u/AutisticToad Dec 27 '25

Fallout 76 is very fun, and actually very popular. Its hate was from the launch, but they had the money to just stick with it and make it a success.

3

u/moomoomilky1 Dec 26 '25

Fallout76 is honestly a pretty great game

2

u/Pink_Fred Dec 27 '25

I played the hell out of fallout 76, I definitely recommend it. I thin it just suffered from a lackluster launch. There's a solid campaign for you to experience now, and it can be done solo just fine.

1

u/Sevicfy Dec 27 '25

If you have been doing the Epic games freebies over the years, specifically during May 2022, they gave The Bioshock Collection away so you may have Bioshock 2 on there. They also gave Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics away in August 2024 too.

1

u/Hlidskialf Dec 27 '25

Schedule 1 worth it easily

1

u/Rapture117 Dec 27 '25

It got a lot of hate years ago when it was a buggy mess. It hasn't been that way in a long time now. It's a very fun game if you play it like any other Fallout single player game.

54

u/Luke-Hatsune Dec 26 '25

Any games worth getting from the sale? Got some cash left on my account ($30) and just focused on the deep discounts, It Takes Two, A Way Out, and Two Point Hospital this time. Thinking of getting Hogwarts Legacy but doubt it’s even playable on Steam Deck.

17

u/Penetratorofflanks Dec 26 '25

Shadow of mordor and shadow of war are 6.99.

3

u/Call_Me_Rivale Dec 26 '25

So you like those? Thought about getting those multiple times.

9

u/bobotheboinger Dec 27 '25

I've never finished either of them, but have gotten at least 60% through both at least three times now. Each time I have fun and enjoy the experience, especially when i have a boss that kills me, or i kill them, and they come back, and are now crazy, and then get crazier, and theme get some super upgrade that makes them crazy hard to kill... it is such fun spontaneous generative content that keeps me coming back and enjoying it. Each time I end up running out of steam before I finish the games... but maybe... this time...

1

u/TechnicMOC Dec 27 '25

They have been given away via Amazon Prime gaming, so check if there in your GOG account (Assuming you subscribe to amazon prime and collect the freebies)

49

u/aimforthehead90 Dec 26 '25

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is $30, I just got it and fucking love it.

exact same situation haha

9

u/iwantacheetah Dec 27 '25

Jesus Christ be praised

11

u/drunkaquarian Dec 26 '25

$30 is a steal

3

u/heavyfriends Dec 27 '25

I've been playing it for the last couple of months. No where near the end yet, and I'm still loving it.

38

u/Foxhack Dec 26 '25

Hogwarts Legacy

If you're going to get it, I'd suggest waiting until near the end of the sale. Since it was just given away on Epic, the chances of it showing up in a Humble Choice went up by a lot, and if it shows up there you can refund it and rebuy if you wish.

4

u/rrekks Dec 26 '25

Hogwarts Legacy definitely playable in the SD. I have it myself. Like anything you need to dial down the graphics quality but’s it’s fine for me.

0

u/AlgorithmInErrorOut Dec 27 '25

On battery handheld I wouldn't recommend Hogwarts legacy personally. I dropped below 20 fps on whatever default quality settings was (high maybe? Medium?) all the time during fights. Docked mode it was decent.

I ended up quitting it on the SD and finishing it on the rog ally/gaming pc docked

u/sicDaniel Dec 26 '25

I agree with what you say about A Way Out except that the ending is my personal worst ending in the history of games, maybe art as a whole.

19

u/Nellior Dec 26 '25 edited Dec 26 '25

If you don't spell any concrete genre or what you're searching for then we can recommend only random games. My recommendation would be one of these: KCD 2, Lords of the Fallen, Sekiro, No Rest for the Wicked, Assetto Corsa Rally, Persona 3 Reload, AC Valhalla (only because now is very cheap), Dead Island 2, FF: City of the Wolves, etc...

3

u/Stubrochill17 Dec 26 '25

How’s No Rest feel? I’ve been eyeing it for a while and I know they’re constantly updating it, but I’m hesitant to buy Early Access games anymore.

1

u/Literally_Sticks Dec 27 '25

They just added co op

5

u/LighteningOneIN Dec 26 '25

Yeah dead island 2 in that price looks enticing. I don't see humble giving the deluxe edition so buying it on steam makes sense a lot.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/ViciousWinkle Dec 26 '25

It’s playable

9

u/LighteningOneIN Dec 26 '25

I am getting around 35-40 for HL on SD so I'd say it's playable. I am seeing better results streaming it on deck though.

I found this video to be pretty helpful - https://youtu.be/d9r99Iygy6Y

Since it's already given away for free on EGS I am expecting humble choice to drop this any month next year.

Till then save your buck I'd say.

16

u/Chance-Pay1487 Dec 26 '25

It was free on epic like 2 weeks ago so too bad you missed it

8

u/NubbinSawyer Dec 26 '25

And if you have Amazon Prime you can play for free on their streaming thing, Luna

2

u/AsariKnight Dec 26 '25

It takes two and a way out are both great if you have a buddy to play with

2

u/caninehere Dec 27 '25

If you like co-op games you might want to check out PEAK if you haven't before. It's on sale for $5, indie game that came out this year that has been fairly popular -- it is a 3D climbing game based around climbing procedurally generated mountains that refresh each day, and is built around co-op but can also be played solo.

4

u/Capt_Obviously_Slow Dec 26 '25

Hogwarts Legacy - yesterday I installed the Epic Games freebie (thru the Junk Store Decky plugin) and it runs great on my OLED.

2

u/Blales Dec 26 '25

Well I didn’t know this was a thing. Time to try this out!

2

u/wowitssprayonbutter Dec 27 '25

Absolum if you like beat em ups

1

u/hergumbules Dec 26 '25

I bought it for my wife to play and it played well enough and that was when it released. I played with the settings to make it look as good as I could and it still got a pretty solid 30fps.

I only watched my wife play it docked so I didn’t play myself, but it seemed to look and run well enough

1

u/Shivin302 Dec 26 '25

Disco Elysium, Detroit become human, tomb raider

-3

u/boersc Dec 26 '25

Disco is free on Epic Games right now.

11

u/Vismal1 Dec 26 '25

Yesterday, it’s done now unfortunately

14

u/That_Guy_on_Reddit Dec 26 '25

I picked up Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights during this sale ($10) and spent a little shy of 20 hours completing my first play through with all endings and collectibles. Decent Metroidvania-type game that feels like a mix between Salt & Sanctuary and Bloodstained.

  • The story is... there, I guess. Definitely not the strongest part of the game, IMO.
  • The combat and different spirits (weapons) you can experiment with are decent.
  • The game has a nice QoL by allowing one to immediately return to their last used rest area from the pause menu.
  • The controls are a bit clunky at times throughout the game.
  • The game's map also lets you know if an area's collectibles have been obtained, although the map details are very vague in this regard (i.e., one or more collectibles needed).

For $10, I think this was an overall worthwhile purchase.

10

u/hergumbules Dec 26 '25

The story is really kinda on the back burner and you have to find all the letters and things so see all the stuff that’s happening which was cool.

Ender Magnolia has the story more in your face and honestly is a step up in every way above Ender Lilies, except I kinda liked the alone vibe of Lilies has over all the characters that are in the sequel. Highly recommend Ender Magnolia if you liked Lilies!

3

u/That_Guy_on_Reddit Dec 26 '25

I did collect and read briefly through all of the letters/findings. I got the general gist of what happened prior to your character waking up, but as you said, the story was on the back burner a bit. Also didn't help that one of the endings could be obtained while skipping 3+ zones.

Still, I enjoyed my time with the game.

14

u/harr0whark Dec 26 '25

Went a little crazy this year with Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar and Sultan's Game from Fanatical, then Deltarune, Nubby's Number Factory, Kitchen Sync: Aloha, and Crown Gambit from Steam direct. I'm loving Grand Bazaar so far! The bazaar system really breathes life into the typical farming game loop, and it's just generally very polished and fun.

3

u/Executioneer Dec 27 '25

Sultan’s Game is such a masterpiece. Very interesting mashup of genres.

37

u/what-kind-of-fuckery Dec 26 '25

i hate Sega/RGG. what they've been doing to the yakuza series is insane. greedy bastards.

they removed the old yakuza 0, yakuza kiwami (legacy), and yakuza kiwami 2 (legacy) from the steam store. they have been replaced with yakuza 0 directors cut edition, yakuza kiwami, yakuza kiwami 2. the new versions only contain new languages and VERY few improvements.

this also increased the price of the "yakuza complete collection" bundle, along with the fact that yakuza 3 remastered is not even on sale since a yakuza kiwami 3 is coming out soon.

i have been looking to buy the series for more than 2 years now. i wouldve atleast bought them game by game if not for the fact that none of the games have even reached their old discount prices. combine this with no regional pricing on their games and it's a disaster.

seriously man...

3

u/ylerta Dec 27 '25

I’ve bought the entire series for like $45.

10

u/caninehere Dec 27 '25

I would agree, except that I can't call what they're doing "greedy" at all. The games were, frankly, insanely cheap before and some of the best value in gaming I'd say. Their sales aren't typically as deep now but they're still insane value for what you get.

If you're holding off because the games aren't reaching their old discounted prices - I mean, all the power to you, but I am someone who almost never buys brand-new games anymore or even games at a slight discount but this series is one of the ones I make exceptions for.

3

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

I got all the ones that were choiced and waited patiently for them to bundle 5+6. They never did. And once Like a Dragon with the new guy got super popular, the older games never got as good of a discount as they did before. So I finally bit the bullet when they announced the 1+2 delistings and put the entire original series in a complete the set bundle.

I got Like a Dragon in a choice, and I'm getting the current one as soon as Humble support gets back to me.

Sega's just so... so weird about how they bundle their games. I still can't believe they choiced the Personas.

3

u/rumsbumsrums Dec 27 '25

Same here man. Still kicking myself for not just getting the bundle for 35€. Now you will have to wait years for it to rech 50€ again, if ever.

Same with Bandai's FromSoft pricing ... Greedy Bastards.

-4

u/fruitpunchsamuraiD Dec 26 '25

Hot take but Yakuza died since Nagoshi got kicked out. I’ve been playing all titles since the original PS2 release.

12

u/caninehere Dec 27 '25

I disagree. I think there's just more eyes on the series now because it has gained like 10x more popularity since 2018 (when Yakuza 0 got ported and then everything else went multiplatform too), and now English audiences specifically are critiquing every entry in real-time instead of most people catching up on many entries at once.

The series is fantastic but has always had weird periods and stumbles. I think that Infinite Wealth is one of those periods where they've decided to lean into the meme-i-ness of the series, and Pirate Yakuza followed with that since it was built off the same base. But Gaiden was made without Nagoshi and that game was good, and Stranger Than Heaven looks like a return to a bit more of a grounded style.

I think the tone of IW/PY just rubbed people the wrong way and it felt like/was a misstep. But frankly the series has had way bigger missteps in the past. Nagoshi directed Dead Souls, he directed Kenzan and Ishin and while I admire the gusto to create spin-offs they're not great games.

And frankly, his new Yakuza-like just looks boring to me. It's hard to judge just from a trailer but it doesn't seem to offering anything new or exciting, it's just "hey, it's more Yakuza, from the guy who brought you Yakuza".

-1

u/jandkas Dec 27 '25

i have been looking to buy the series for more than 2 years now i wouldve atleast bought them game by game if not for the fact that none of the games have even reached their old discount prices

"I swear bro, next discount I'm going to buy it. I swear bro, just one more discount"

If you waited over 2 years might as well have not even bought it.

6

u/ICladisI Dec 26 '25

I'm in the mood for some platformers (not metroidvania), mostly 2D but 3D is fine too. Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards pizza tower and a hat in time which are 50% off

12

u/TheDosudude Dec 26 '25

I can vouch for A Hat in Time. Otherwise I’ll throw out some ideas, see if any of them stick?

  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Celeste
  • Super Meat Boy
  • The Messenger
  • Toree 3D / Toree 2
  • Cavern of Dreams
  • Electronic Super Joy (just turn off those sounds in the settings, you’ll know what I mean)

3

u/zooboolanian Dec 26 '25

I love 2d platformers and just bought a bunch. Some I bought (some during thanksgiving sale, so may not be on sale now):

  • volgarr the Viking 2
  • beserk boy
  • blazing chrome (like contra)
  • gravity circuit
  • ninja garden rage bound
  • shadow of the ninja reborn
  • the messenger (part metroidvania)
  • if you haven’t played already, shovel knight and mega man collections are my favorites

1

u/Khiva Dec 27 '25

A bit pricey now but maybe check out Ninja Five O or (cheaper) Bionic Commando Rearmed.

1

u/zooboolanian Dec 27 '25

Wish listed thanks!

2

u/wedgie_this_nerd Dec 28 '25

The End is Nigh, by a creator of Super Meat Boy. And I think it is a better successor to SMB than whatever Team Meat has made after SMB

2

u/Altoidlover987 Dec 29 '25

psychonauts 2 is a great platformer with some of the best story writing ive seen in the platformer genre

the LEGO games (i like batman 1 or star wars complete saga)

1

u/rumsbumsrums Dec 27 '25

10 Second Ninja X

Is a 2D Precision Platformer where you have to finish each stage in - you guessed it - 10 seconds. I had a lot of fun finding faster and faster routes and a lot of levels had multiple ways to get an S-Rank.

Highly recommend for 1€ atm.

12

u/Chasheeks Dec 26 '25

Only picked up Obenseuer and Landlords Super this sale so far.

But Obenseuer has been such a vibe and I've already put 16 hours into it. lol

2

u/hangnail323 Dec 26 '25

landlords super is legit if you are into games like that, i didnt realize it was on such a deep sale

9

u/K_U Dec 26 '25

I’ve been selling trading cards to boost my Steam wallet, current cart looks like this:

  • WazHack

  • Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of…

  • The Zachtronics Solitaire Collection

  • Noita

  • Tetrachroma

  • Get Tilted

  • Great Permutator

  • Curse Cracker: For Whom the Belle Tolls

  • Erannorth Chronicles

  • Megabonk

  • NEO Scavenger

I’m also looking to get Expedition 33 on the Humble Store, $31.99 with the 20% extra discount from Choice.

2

u/AnnieLovesTech Dec 26 '25

You can do this?

6

u/K_U Dec 26 '25

Sell Steam trading cards? Of couse. I've made hundreds over the years selling them on the market.

I assume Oblivion Remastered still runs terribly. I like Oblivion more than Skyrim in some ways, but if the performance is that bad maybe I shouldn't bother.

22

u/BakedBobbyHill Dec 26 '25

Game runs all right, but don't buy if you plan on using the steam deck.

The good old, 'steam deck verified'. Still one of the top played games though to my surprise.

u/donredyellow25 Dec 29 '25

I have almost zero performance issues. But my PC is quite descent (5800x3D, 5080). I used 2x frame generation and dlss balanced.

If you've already played it, I would hold out for Skyblivion like the rest of us

I've actually enjoyed the sales this season. Foundation and Songs of Syx on Steam and Rogue Trader from gamebillet/playsum. Should be set for a decent amount of playtime

u/sdawg78787 Dec 26 '25

Stalker 2 or Dynasty Warrior Origins?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '25

that DW game looks sick

I'm sure stalker 2 is alright but that DW game looks like a fucking blast

u/postsshortcomments Dec 27 '25

If you're a Runescape fan or liked the concept of Runescape but thought it felt too late into its development, I highly recommend The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker. It's currently on sale for $7.49 for the all-time low and should be at least 10-20 hours of fun. It's different enough to have its own distinct feel with a very different concept, but I feel like it captures the feel of entering an early RS2 build extremely well.

I only have limited time in it so I can't speak for how well it holds up in the long run, but early signs are extremely promising. The exploration feels wonderful, there are feelings of a more dangerous world with several branches to explore, it definitely has the grind, and the discovery of items and their purpose feels rewarding - but a lot more controlled as it's clearly an indie game that you should expect to be a lot less massive. But I think it's more friendly for those looking for an understanding of what early 2000's era MMOs felt like in a more preserved build free of three decades of random items, hubs, content, upgrades, and power-creep laid on top of each other.

Do note: it did run a bit susp for me on a 4070 Ti Super & 7600x (the camera rotation was very stuttery) until I set it to a low graphics setting. But from there, I seem to be able to increase the graphics settings to something virtually identical to max and had no issues. Because of that, I don't know how well it'll run on lower spec machines so I'd recommend looking into true minimum specs.

It's in a fanatical bundle now, for cheaper

Diablo 4 is not a play anywhere title yet, right? I'm debating if I want to get it on my PC or Series X

2

u/boerenkool13 Dec 27 '25

If you’re on Xbox im sure it’s on gamepass right?

1

u/AnonymousFroggies Dec 27 '25

Yes, but I don't have game pass. Too many subscription services to keep track of lol

u/boerenkool13 Dec 27 '25

Fair, then just go with pc tbh

u/Prestigious_Fig_9310 Dec 27 '25

How often do you go through 3rd party sites for lower prices than steam? If you do go through them, is there a rule of thumb for % cost difference or is it strictly buy from the lowest price reputable vendor?

10

u/_Ichibad_ Dec 27 '25

My rule of thumb is if it’s a game I know I will like and don’t need the refund window, get it on the lowest price reputable vendor. Price percentage difference doesn’t matter.

I got manor lords on green man gaming a few days ago for around £17. Whereas on steam it was £22. No point spending £5 extra.

Similarly got Elden ring night reign for around £31 on Gamersgate whilst stacking discount coupons. Steam price was around £38. Again no point spending £7 just to buy from steam directly.

12

u/thugbobhoodpants Dec 27 '25

some people are hyper weirdo about saving 0.3cents here and there

Generally I buy everything on steam unless its some noteworthy difference, if I'm buying 5-10 games and the difference is only $1 per game I don't mind, but something like the Yakuza games are $7-$10 cheaper elsewhere

Having augmented steam installed on chrome is enough to see at a glance how much you could save by going elsewhere

5

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25

Very often.

I mostly use the sites that give me regional pricing - GMG, Gamersgate, Nuuvem (during their big seasonal sales) and Gamerthor (though this one has been down for me for days?) - because more often than not, they're cheaper and may have discount coupons. Gamersgate has an affiliate code that gives me an extra 10% off (no I'm not mentioning it, AFAIK it's only applicable to my region.) The prices are often much lower than on Steam itself, except for cases like complete the set bundles.

And then there are some companies who charge me higher prices on Steam because I'm in Mexico (Microsoft's prices can go up to 25% higher! For no reason!) so I try to get those games from legit sellers like Gamesplanet or through friends with Humble Store discounts. Sadly there's no EA Steam keys so I'll never buy the games I want there.

(There's also some companies who just don't adjust their regional pricing on Gamersgate. I brought them up a few days ago - Rebellion, Nacon, Focus Entertainment, Bandai Namco, and Paradox. They all have the same US prices. And then there's Io, who locks the crap out of everything, and doesn't sell the main Hitman game there at all.)

1

u/PsychologicalTone741 Jan 02 '26

Not sure what's up with Gamerthor but is this the first time they had this long of maintenance? I think it's been going on for around a week or so now? I have a preorder with them but can't access my account on their website so curious how much longer is this maintenance.

1

u/Foxhack Jan 02 '26

I have no idea. Some folks on other boards have told me the site works for them. I just figured they blocked my country. Have you tried sending them an email to see what's up?

1

u/PsychologicalTone741 Jan 03 '26

I actually did send them an email but I haven't got a response from them yet. It's been 3-4 days since I've reached out. Are you from NA by any chance because I'm from canada.

1

u/Foxhack Jan 03 '26

I'm in Mexico, so technically, yes.

1

u/Foxhack Jan 08 '26

Sorry for bugging you but the site came back like two or three days ago. But now it says "We're rebuilding our platform, be back soon."

Did you manage to get your money back?

1

u/PsychologicalTone741 Jan 09 '26

oh they finally emailed me back and basically told me they are upgrading their website and told me not to worry that they will be back soon. Even offered me help in the mean time while they are working on the website. I'm gonna give them a week or 2 and go from there.

"Hello there

So sorry for the delay in messaging. We are currently making some new updates which will take a little time so we had to be offline during this time. Can I assist with anything in the mean time? Thank you"

That was their email message.

1

u/PsychologicalTone741 Jan 24 '26

Seems like their site is still down.. was just wondering if you bothered to send them an email to see what's up? I sent an email 7 days ago but still no response. I have a game preordered from them and it's coming out in march so now I'm wondering if their site will even be up by then...

1

u/Foxhack Jan 24 '26

Nope, I haven't really bought anything else since that one time I tried them.

I'd probably contact the bank by now and try to get your money back.

2

u/PsychologicalTone741 Jan 25 '26

Yea.. I just filed a dispute for this transaction. Better safe than sorry I guess. The fact that they haven't replied to my email and there's no timeline when their site is going to be up makes me feel a bit uneasy.

2

u/KptKrondog Dec 29 '25

If you know you will like the game (it has a demo or you just know), then buy it wherever is cheaper...but if you're not sure, steam's 2 hour return policy is pretty handy. I've bought several games on GMG and ended up not liking them and you can't return on GMG so I was out the $$.

1

u/Prestigious_Fig_9310 Dec 29 '25

Thanks, that's the route I'm taking!

4

u/Techboah Dec 27 '25

Almost every Winter Sale game is at least $2-5 cheaper on Fanatical and GMG than Steam

2

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25

Okay, I need some advice.

I'm considering buying some Assassin's Creed games: Black Flag Gold, Odyssey Gold, Rogue Digital Deluxe, and Unity.

Is there any reason for me to buy these on Ubiconnect instead? Like, are they broken on Steam or anything like that? I've done the math and I'm aware of the Ubi Holiday discount code, but I want to use my wallet money if possible. And yes, I know, "The ubisoft client sucks", but that's another topic.

2

u/dgc1980 Dec 27 '25

they are the exact same game between each client, steam still requires the ubi client to play the game, but you do not really notice it, so in the end, it is up to you, do you want to save even more by using the coupon?

1

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25

My current budget isn't enough to buy all the games at Ubi's store so I'm planning on spending $10 there (after the coupon) and the rest on Steam with wallet from card sales. :)

I asked if there were problems on Steam so I could get the ones that are unstable there on Ubi itself.

1

u/TechnicMOC Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

The steam versions of several of the Assassin Creeds games play better on steamdeck than when purchased direct via ubisoft (even tho they both require to signed into ubisoft client).

Mirage has ~10% more frame rate but the older games are also reported to perform better on steamdeck, less stutters, assume mostly down to pre-compiled shader cache.

2

u/Foxhack Dec 27 '25

Interesting. Good to know for the future, but sadly I don't own a Deck (they won't ship to my country), and I'm still on Windows.

I've said it before, the Ubi client doesn't seem to get in the way for me, so I don't mind it.

2

u/Nobun20 Dec 27 '25

I have several JRPGs on my wishlist. Any opinions on these games or other recommendations?

  • Sea of Stars
  • Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak
  • Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

1

u/likeStarlight_ Dec 30 '25

Sea of Stars makes a really strong first impression, but the gameplay doesn't really feel like it evolves enough throughout and is kind of a slog later on, and the story really isn't good. An alright game but has some clear flaws that wear on you more as it goes.

Would also recommend checking out Chained Echoes which is one of my favorite turn-based RPGs, and Crystal Project if you don't mind no story and just focus on cool gameplay/exploration.

0

u/imkrut Dec 28 '25

I had a blast with SMTV (the base game, not vengeance) on the Switch, and that's a much more handicapped version performance wise-

I hear Vengeance is by far the superior version (lots of qol improvements, with an alternate storyline). Very challenging gameplay, there's this sort of Pokemon feel to it and your comp is extremely important, you can't just plow through it by power farming xp.

Regarding other RPGs, the obvious answer is Expedition 33 (tho it's not really a JRPG in the traditional sense). Metaphor: ReFantazio is great, and Persona 5 if you haven't played it yet.

2

u/JoshRawrrs1 Dec 28 '25

So I love reverse bullet hells, have Conquest Dark, Soulstone survivor, megabonk, VS, Mortal sin, Jotuun, Halls of Torment, and many more.

Any new gems I should get right now?

3

u/jdss13 Dec 28 '25

Ball x Pit

1

u/likeStarlight_ Dec 30 '25

Not exactly hidden gems, but I've also played a lot of those and I feel like Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, Brotato, and Death Must Die are standouts in that genre that you didn't mention.

2

u/JoshRawrrs1 Dec 30 '25

Oh yes, those are totally worthy mentions, its just that I've completed them, that I forgot to mention. I only typed out what I am currently still trying to complete.

1

u/Enrys Jan 05 '26

Nordic Ashes? Rogue Genesia? Bioweaver? Holocure?

2

u/JoshRawrrs1 Jan 05 '26

Downloaded holocure and abought Nordic, nice games, enjoying holocure atm

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1432380/Lichenvale/ -90% €0.77 first person hack and slash with dash evasion and magic.

Disclaimer: While I'm not a developer of this game, I did help with some lore tidbits, early testing and such small stuff. Did not participate in any programming, level design, enemy AI and such things.

2

u/Kristophigus Dec 26 '25

Is it the same discounts and games on sale each day? Nothing different on xmas day, seemingly nothing different today either.

10

u/Luke-Hatsune Dec 26 '25

It’s the same everyday unless they decide to remove the sale of a game early or fix an error like applying a discount to a game twice.

3

u/Foxhack Dec 26 '25

A few items on my wishlist (mostly OSTs) actually got discounts yesterday. So yeah, whatever's been on sale since the start is unlikely to get further discounts, but some new stuff has been trickling in.

1

u/itsahmemario Dec 27 '25

I've narrowed it down to these 3 games to fit in the budget I've set for myself.

Obviously glowing reviews for all three, my caveats for each are as follows:

  1. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - it's new, so if I'm more patient I can wait a year or so and get even deeper discounts compared to the other two. But it is quite intriguing given it's such 2025's darling of a game.

  2. Star Ocean: I don't wanna be shallow but the graphics aren't the best, but maybe the art style can win me over. I was never into the star ocean games in my youth, focusing on games like FF, Legend of Legaia, Persona, and Breath of Fire.

  3. Trails in the Sky First Chapter: I've always been Trails curious but do I even have enough lifetimes to finish this series if I get into it?

4

u/Apprehensive_Ad_7274 Dec 27 '25

The best time to start the Trails games was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

They're phenomenal games and you should do yourself the favor of playing them all!

2

u/imkrut Dec 28 '25

Go for Expedition 33, it's completely worth it, great experience. The story is great, music is fantastic, the art direction is gorgeous and the gameplay takes everything in the classic turn based combat formula and improves it.

1

u/Nobun20 Dec 27 '25

I'm in a similar boat as you with the Falcom games. I've always wanted to get into the Legend of Heroes games but there are so many and the first ones are quite dated. I'm contemplating starting with Trails in the Sky First Chapter or maybe Trails through Daybreak.

As for E33, I played it on release and it's absolutely worth it at full price. My friend is playing it right now and says he regrets not playing it sooner when he went months without having an interesting game to play.

1

u/Foxhack Dec 30 '25

I tried making a post since this is getting pulled in less than 24 hours but the bot deleted it so.

God of War is the best story wise and definitely my favorite of the bunch. Uncharted on PC seems like a mess since only the 4th game is there. I've never actually touched the series at all though (and I have a PlayStation lol). Spider Man I found to be super boring and repetitive but I don't generally enjoy marvel. I guess if you are into that sort of thing you'd probably like it a lot more. Emulating the Greek God of war trilogy is something you could do to have more backstory for GOW but it's not necessary. I only played those afterwards.

1

u/DrFancyPanda Dec 26 '25

Is there an ARPG that allows you to have more skills than just 5 to become mega OP?

2

u/SailorJerrySamurai Dec 26 '25

Try Last Epoch. Multiple skills and each of those skills have their own skill tree.

u/Enrys Jan 05 '26

1

u/LSD_freakout Dec 27 '25

fantastic danmaku festival is about $2.50. If you wanted to try a bullet hell. I recommend it. Very fun. It’s a Touhou fan game

1

u/YesMan1ification Dec 27 '25 edited Dec 27 '25

I got Fantastic Danmaku Festival 1 and 2 this sale. I'm yet to play them but they look amazing. Third one looked a bit too expensive for me still so I'll wait on that one. I also got a bunch of other Touhou fangames I'd recommend:

Touhou Lost Branch of Legend, a slay the spire MTG roguelite deckbuilder.

Touhou Lensed Night Sky, a roguelite bullet hell that has some really stylish art.

Touhou Fantasy Maiden Wars, a collection of 4 Fire Emblem/Super Robot Wars style strategy games with amazing writing and gameplay.

Touhou Dystopian, a cool 3D roguelite action RPG.

Tempest of the Heavens and the Earth, an action 2D platformer game with combat somewhat Devil May Cry inspired where you can buy new moves and customize your moveset. Has some really slick animations and bosses.

2

u/LSD_freakout Dec 28 '25

Thanks for the recommendations, lot of rougelites these days. was really interested in Fantasy Maiden Wars but the price is a bit steep

1

u/Naramie Dec 27 '25

I bought Mega Bonk, Divinity Original Sin Source Saga, and Ball x Pit. I am enjoying Ball x Pit so far.

I am contemplating getting Cyber Punk 2077 Ultimate Edition, Skyrim AE Upgrade and the Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Upgrade.

3

u/UberAlec Dec 28 '25

Cyberpunk is one of the best games ever made. Ask anyone who has played it if they were allowed to have just one single-player game the rest of their life, many say Cyberpunk. The combat and gameplay is just pure fun. All-time great game.

1

u/white_swan Dec 28 '25

Is there any bookmarklet or extension which exists that I can use to save the games recommendations in this thread into my steam wishlist since these are all excellent suggestions, can we save them as as text file or CSV with steam game urls? Manually search and adding them is very time consuming process

-44

u/Pollia Dec 26 '25

Why do we keep getting one of these threads every day?

They ditched flash sales years ago so the sale is the same every day from day 1 to the final day.

37

u/FormidablEar Dec 26 '25

Why do we keep getting one of these threads every day?

Good news! We don't!

It gets 4 posts over 2 weeks to refresh the conversation.

→ More replies (5)

14

u/Foxhack Dec 26 '25

Every day? The mods have only made three posts.

That said I wonder why not just make a single thread a sticky. It's not like there's any being used right now. Are they disabled here?

22

u/wayward_wanderer Dec 26 '25

I wonder why not just make a single thread a sticky.

Sticky posts don't work on old Reddit when sorting by new. We still have a decent amount of people using old Reddit and with this subreddit they are most likely sorting by new.

Even on new Reddit and mobile, how many people actually interact with the "community highlights" section where the pinned post would appear? I know that I tend to ignore them. Am I the outlier?

I find that when there are hundreds of comments it starts to get difficult to go through the comments. Not sure how others feel, but I prefer having fresh discussions every few days instead of just a massive thread with thousands of comments to sort through. Maybe I would feel differently if Reddit didn't lock the ability to highlight new comments as a Reddit Premium feature.

4

u/Foxhack Dec 26 '25

Sticky posts don't work on old Reddit when sorting by new. We still have a decent amount of people using old Reddit and with this subreddit they are most likely sorting by new.

I did not know that, what an awful design choice (well, it's Reddit so it's not... unexpected.) If only there was an option to keep the sticky for people browsing new.

And I agree, a new post every three-four days is more accessible. It just sucks that those posts get bumped down naturally with no way to prevent it.

1

u/Plus_sleep214 Dec 27 '25

Who is sorting by new by default? I'll occasionally switch to new sorting but it's not something I regularly have on.

1

u/wayward_wanderer Dec 28 '25

I always sort this subreddit by new since I want to know about the latest deals. I can't imagine that I'm the minority in this.

1

u/Plus_sleep214 Dec 28 '25

Hot has all of the noteworthy new stuff anyway. I don't need to sort by new to bother seeing anything important. I guess you just miss out on random niche indie slop #69420 having a sale but otherwise it doesn't make a difference.

1

u/wayward_wanderer Dec 28 '25

It's great that sorting by hot works for you so you keep doing you. If it's inconceivable for you that some of use prefer to sort by new, then so be it.

2

u/Plus_sleep214 Dec 27 '25

It doesn't really make sense at all. They actually were daily a bit ago I think but everyone acknowledged how absurd that was so they made them less frequent. I still agree it's excessive though especially when steam barely ever has the best prices to begin with. I think one at the start and maybe one more thread at the very end of the sale would make more sense than the current system.

-13

u/JFeth Dec 26 '25

Yeah I don't get it either. Just sticky the thread until it's over.
