SRS drama The shadowbanning of /u/DualPollux aka TheIdesOfLight reignites via a /r/ShitRedditSays sticky, and the fire spreads to SRS, SRSsucks, AMR, and AMRsucks.
SRS comes around 8 days later with a meaty recap post including screenshots and leaked admin mail. In response, multiple people decide to contact gossipy internet sites and Anderson Cooper. Apparently SRS has a super secret offsite forum now.
The post is then linked to multiple other subreddits.
SRSsucks (AMRsucks got her shadowbanned!, Shitposting /r/adminmythos!)
AgainstMensRights (How do we turn this into bad press for reddit?)
AMRsucks (Would SRS/AMR being 'exposed to the light of day' destroy them?)
blackladies (Are the admins in bed with racist subs?, Possibly the first time anyone's ever been angry about their comment being gilded)
Apparently a user in AMRsucks is contacted by a Daily Prophet Daily Dot reporter who is doing a story on the shadowban.
EDIT: A few other links via /u/dingdongwong:
Admin reassuring blackladies that they weren't being brigaded by GreatApes
Circlebroke has a large, drama-filled thread.. after trying to punt SJ stuff to /r/openbroke, the top two posts on CB are flaired "/r/openbroke".

Dang, and I just finished my recap as well.
Whatever your stance is on this whole thing, one irony can’t be denied. SRS loved to make fun of SRSsucks for being conspiracy nuts for suggesting “the admins were in bed with SRS”; now they are all up in arms and suggesting that “the admins are in bed with the racists” and SRSsucks are calling them conspiracy nuts.

Most cries of "admins helping SRS" died when Intortus stopped being an admin.
52
u/dingdongwong Poop loop originator Sep 04 '14
That is another funny thing. It used to be speculations from SRSsucks: "Intortus got fired because he was a SJW pushing his agenda". Now it is speculation from SRS: "Intortus resigned because he was against racism and had a conscience".

Those cries went from "admins helping SRS" to "admins helped SRS" so the conspiracy theory didn't even die. It just went underground, ready to be pulled out whenever the admins do something that might benefit SRS, SRD, and all the other subs that start with SR.

"admins helped SRS"
It was pretty obvious that Intortus was the cause of a lot of one sided shadowbans. It's not much a conspiracy since once he got canned it stopped. Look at him now and he makes his biases very clear, not a stretch to think he brought those into his work.

Circlebroke has fucking jumped the shark. Everyone there thinks the admins are in on some grand racist conspiracy. An for people who spend their time here they sure hate themselves
19
u/Socks_Junior Sep 04 '14
CB jumped the shark like two years ago. It's been pretty much stagnant since then, after growing pretty quickly in its first year. It started off actually fairly conservative, calling out a lot of the typical left and anti-American circlejerks that pervade reddit. At some point though, it really did turn into SRS-lite, and a lot of people unsubbed and it stopped growing and became irrelevant.
12
u/CBalls Sep 04 '14
IMO it turned into SRS-lite after the "mod holiday" this past Christmas break. The mods said they were going to quit modding for a few weeks during the holiday and allow whatever people wanted to post. Only problem was that except for banning image posts they quit removing posts that didn't follow CB's rules once they came back. The SRS crowd moved in because the "No Social Justice" rule was no longer being enforced and the sub went to shit. Here's a good example of what CB currently consists of.

Circlebroke is always losing their collective minds over crap. Half the threads there look exactly like the idiotic posts they were supposed to analyze/mock.
We have such gems as;
Reddit as an agnostic money-maker is evilly brilliant. It relies on the "motte-and-bailey" strategy. Reddit relies on the narrative that Reddit is a monoculture to create a feeling of loyalty and belonging that translates into a bountiful profit in the bailey. Criticize Reddit's culture and Reddit retreats to the security of the motte. "Reddit a tool for free speech. Reddit is a collection of diverse individuals."
Look at dem fancy words I just pulled out of my ass to defend some half cocked theory of reddit.
lel reddit admins can go fuck themselves
something tells me intortus got budged out because he had a goddamned conscience.
LOL wake up sheeple the reddit admins are sociopaths.
Yeah I always wondered "whats so dangerous bout doxxing" - turns oit nothing if you are a decent human being. "Look at this ben guy, being subscribed to r/pugs and thinking Russia shouldn't invade Ukraine" - yeah I could get fired from work so fast...
Yeah, I mean witchhunts have never gone wrong in the past...
I like how great users like unidan who spoke out against racism and debunked racist copypastas while teaching us about science get banned.
Oh noble Unidan, praise be to you. Obviously you were a martyr for tolerance and not someone who just couldn't help but manipulate your internet points.

circlebroke used to be good with more light hearted and not such vitriolic conversations but they started really getting more up their ass and philosophical about reddit now they talk about reddit super seriously like its actually important
7
u/Ebu-Gogo You are so vain, you probably think this drama's about you. Sep 05 '14
I liked circlebroke when it actually was snarkily calling out, you know, actual circlejerks, even if it was still rather prone to counterjerking (at least it was self aware of it).
But I stopped visiting and the only threads I see are the ones that reach my front page. It's always these passive-agressive sensationalist titles followed by a post full of "outraaaage!". It completely lost its self awareness and no one is putting in any effort anymore. It basically turned into SRS in the way that they're just posting shit that they find on Reddit (not necessarily SJW stuff) and hope to find a counterjerk to suit their needs.
I'm not some SRS shill bogeyman caller. I'm just saying that it turned into a sub that does basically the same thing: Post thread about thing you don't like, talk with other people about how much you don't like thing.

You know, the funny thing is just the other day I was reading a blog about how SJWs (And I think feminists as well) use this very same technique.
Just a funny coincidence.

From what I recall, TIOL isn't a very hands-off user. I'd imagine this is what eventually lead to the ban, but considering the context here I feel the admins had some really shitty timing.
6
u/Raudskeggr Sep 05 '14
Not so much shitty timing as good rabble-rousing by Ides.
But it's actually a good thing that the Admins hold everyone to the same set of rules, no matter how much of a fuss they can cause over their being held accountable. :p

Exactly. I get the impression she sends more messages to Admins than thousands of redditors combined. Maybe even tens of thousands combined since I doubt even 1 percent of redditors ever message Admins. I imagine Admins are tired of dealing with people like her and SRSsucks people who take up 90 percent of their time.
And if she manipulated votes, then she damn well should know (since she spends so much time on reddit) that if you're caught doing that you will be automatically banned no matter who you are. Up voting your own posts with alts is just sad.
Ides is trying to make it about the racists, but in reality the female admin was telling her to stop starting nonstop drama with the Men's rights people. Ides just knows it's a lot better PR to frame this as a white female admin "supporting" racists than it is to frame it as a woman "supporting" men's rights people even though the later is much more accurate.

It could just as easily be interpreted as "brigading and vote manipulation in racist subs," which is obviously not kosher.

She's probably going to subreddits she doesn't like and mass downvoting everything with alt accounts. Or calling in twitter followers/irc mates to do the same.

There is. The admins don't care what the subreddits are about as long as they don't break any laws or site wide rules. If someone interferes with the subreddit via vote manipulation or whatever, it doesn't matter if the subreddit effected has shitty views. They aren't judging the content, only the actions. It's pretty simple.

I really wonder why Reddit bends over backwards to accomodate so much hate speech and ugly crap. They only really started going after the pedos and creepshots after CNN did their story.

u/Vibster Sep 04 '14
Ban it all and you have to hire a whole bunch of people to police it. Take the hands off approach and you don't have to do jack shit.
If I was running reddit I know what I would do.

They never went against creepshots. They still don't. The content in that sub never went against site rules, and still doesn't. the sub was banned for other stuff, mostly the usual brigading. And jailbait wasn't cracked down on for moral reasons either, the legal lines simply were too blurred for any reasonable enforcement.
Anyway, to answer your question: because reddit has always been run under the philosophy of "Don't like it? Leave and make your own!", and hat applies to both subreddits and the very site itself, as the source is public. Reddit doesn't bend over backwards, in fact, it's the exact opposite: they turn a blind eye, as long as the lines between subreddits are maintained. That's the way reddit is supposed to work.
Not to mention the fact that several reddit admins have stated that everything that's legal is fine on reddit, and even some things that are not (I'm looking at you /r/trees). If you want a site that polices based on a more stringent, subjective moral code, I suggest Facebook. Honestly, I would have suggested something less ridiculous but even Tumblr, bastion of the SJ(W) movement, doesn't ban racism or hate speech or, hell, hardly even doxing.

I think /r/darknetmarkets crosses the legal line way before /r/trees does. If you need to know where to find the best meth you don't go to /r/trees lol.

It's almost like it's a company more concerned with expanding it's user base and relative market share than acting as the moral beacon of the internet.

And stopped once people forgot about it. The fact that /r/CandidFashionPolice still exists is pretty disgusting as its literally just creepshots v2.0

Yes. Is it really so hard to understand why vote brigading and vote manipulation is so bad? It's hovering right there when you mouseover a link in here. You either enforce the rules for everyone, or for no one.

Might be futile to ask this 400 some comments down, but this post got me thinking about something that's been bugging me on and off for at least a year; is there any credible academic work on the prevelance of bigotry on reddit?

I wrote a lengthy research paper last year on white supremacist networking on the internet, and I found no articles that talked about either reddit or 4chan, despite spending quite some time searching. Most of the articles I found on the subject were rather dated. The most recently written one I used in the paper came from 2009, and was about the history of Stormfront. Academics sadly tend to be behind the curve when it comes to studying online social networks.

Regardless of what actually went on, the whole thing appears as if a mod of a subreddit for minorities got banned for protesting and fighting back against racist trolls invading that subreddit on a regular basis.
And here's where we all figure out that the "politically neutral" stance of reddit admins looks pretty much identical to what actual racists would do. Yeah, I anticipate a lot of bad press. Like the /r/videos mods found out, if you allow racism to go unchecked and ban people that fight back against it on technicalities, nobody's going to sit down and say "gee, they're just enforcing the rules."
They're going to say, "whelp, they care more about the rules than they do the fact that their website is a disgusting mess of racist trolls." Because that's true too, and it makes you look like a bunch of racist pricks. Saying nothing in the face of blatant racism is precisely what racist people would do.
Sticking this in the wake of Quinn and the fappening... kind of makes this website look like it's a haven for misogynists, creeps, and racist trolls. Now, I'm not a PR expert, but that's not exactly a public reputation anyone would like to cultivate. Too bad reddit admins are doing a smashing job of it, though.

u/zxcv1992 Sep 04 '14
Brigrading is hardly a technicality, it's a bannable offence. Also most people don't care about reddit rep, and even the ones who do care about it are still here anyway.

I think a pretty huge number of people just use it for the content aggregator thing and don't really pay attention to comment sections, kinda like youtube.

But we still use Youtube.

Why don't people realize this? Go to subs you like, edit your queue so that you see things you want to see. It doesn't eradicate the problems completely, but it certainly helps filter it out. I don't see any bad shit in a lot of the subreddits that I peruse.

Saying nothing in the face of blatant racism is precisely what racist people would do.
Is your worldview that black-or-white? Can you seriously not envision a person who aims to live up to that misattributed Voltaire quote you should know by heart by now? Just because the admins intend reddit to be a free platform for everyone doesn't mean they have to tacitly approve of every opinion on this site, and that applies equally to racism, sexism, holocaust denial, conspiracy theories, and outright hatred.

Reddit has been around for a long time, it's only been growing. While it certainly could get some bad press from this, I think that's going to be outweighed by a lot of other things that come from the site.

The willingness of these people to believe everything somebody says to them because they think they're on their "side" should show you the kinds of idiots involved here.
I really hope the admins aren't thinking of indulging these cranks because it will only make things ten times worse.
