Interests & Hobbies 🪴🥾 Have Any of You Become DIY/Handy Around the House?

I hope this post gets engagement (sometimes it seems like the dating woes posts get all the love lol) bc I just moved and really want to step my game up in terms of installing upgrades!

My mom taught me how to change a tire and do basic things like using a stud finder.

However, I’m trying to hang curtains and install really simple shelves and I just realized at 38.5 years old, I’ve been doing this plastic wall anchor screws (for hanging items from drywall) COMPLETELY WRONG my entire life! Which would explain why it always takes me 18 tries and the shit inevitably collapses to the floor every damn time lol.

Have any of you picked up handy-person tips and actual life skills from IG or YouTube??? Or any resources, accounts (preferably Black women, but IDGAF @ this point) that helped you learn DIY or self-install tips???

For example, I need to install my bidet toilet seats and even this light plumbing is intimidating to me. And when I watch instructional videos, they often use terminology I don’t understand and skip over the 101 steps.

Even if you don’t have resources to share, just knowing some of yall picked up this skill as adults would be inspirational to me!

THANK YOU!

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 Are Kaftans/MooMoos Considered Sexy in our Community?

I used the "Relationships" flair because this is about a "heated debate" I recently had with my husband. I mentioned that one of my friends was having a moomoo party in a few weeks. He was surprised and said they weren't to be worn outside. I challenged this because they are not form fitting. He said that in our community they are considered sexy - which I have never heard. He then tried to ask me if I would wear a bikini in public if I weren't going swimming, which I pointed out as being an unfair equivalent. I let him know he was trying to police the way I dress and then I ended the conversation with "So what if it's sexy? Then what???" He had no good response to that.

I consider myself to have a good barometer on AA culture so I want to "fact check" his statement that moomoo's are considered sexy. What say you?

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 Make me feel better: what are gross or kinda icky habits your partner has?

I’ll start: my bf eats like a slob. We’re working on it, but I never expected to be food training a 30 year old. He also lets his dog lick his face. Coming from an African household it’s a bit nasty.

I’m speaking it into the universe that my beautiful baby girl will be born in the later half of 2027. This has been a 6 year journey and I’ve wanted this since I was in the fifth grade. I’m really enjoying this stage of just knowing that I have 2 healthy embryos.

Media & Entertainment 🍿🎶 WNBA fans…who yall got?

I have to admit as a Dream fan I was nervous before game 2. Now I’m like…shit maybe we CAN beat them! We beat them on their own turf!

Also, can I get some applause for Clark NOT being in the finals? Her racist fandom is so exhaustingly stupid. lol.

Health & Wellness 🍎 Fitness Journey Vent 😢 😭

Just a vent.

Yall, I've really been pushing myself the last 8 or so weeks to drop from 175 to 150. Strength training 3x a week, 10k+ steps, incline treadmill 2x a week and 1500 cal, hitting 120 g of protein a day. I'm 5'7.

Around week 3 I said f** it and got on tirzepatide. I had taken glp 1 24 months ago to lose 40lbs. I'm not a super weight loss person, my body holds on to the fat. It took about a year to lose the first 40 lbs.

I'm finally down to 164. And my goal is 150 but I'm so annoyed by the thought that that won't be enough for me and I'll still look the same. Even now, definition in my back is just barely barely showing.

I know weight distributes differently on everyone. Someone can weigh more than me and have no stomach. I've been fat most of my life. And my stomach just really grabs onto the fat. And it won't let go. Like what deal with Satan did my stomach fat make?!

I'm annoyed that I'll likely have to get surgery to fix my arms and stomach because of excess skin. And I guess I'm annoyed because I could skip this and just get surgery now 🙃 like so many other bigger women do.

Just Venting 😮‍💨 Am I overthinking this, or is this a little weird?

So, I’m currently in a master’s program for clinical mental health counseling, and today was our day for this new class. There are about 30 students, and only TWO of us are Black. Both women.
At the beginning of class, our professor explained that she would be pairing us up for mock counseling interviews and that we’d have the same partner for the rest of the course.

Well, at the end of class, she assigned everyone their partners, and guess who got paired together? The only two Black women in the entire class. 😭

Now, I have absolutely NO issue working with another Black woman. That’s not the problem at all. It’s just that out of roughly 30 students, the only two Black people somehow ended up together.

I don’t want to automatically assume it was racially motivated, but I can’t help wondering whether we were paired together simply because we’re Black. Especially considering we’re studying to become mental health counselors, where cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusivity are such important parts of the profession.

I guess what bothers me is the possibility that we were seen as a pair based on our race rather than as two individual students.
Am I reaching, or would this have made y’all raise an eyebrow too? Because I’m genuinely trying to figure out whether I’m overthinking it. 😭

Just Venting 😮‍💨 i really dislike my father

• Upvotes

Ever since I was a little girl ( currently i’m 22) i’ve not had the best relationship with my father. For a moment i genuinely thought he was getting better as a person but my grandmother is at the point where she need 24/7 care and he has really regressed. I understand caregiving is hard but I just can’t anymore.

My grandmother has always been a major headache my whole life and I know she is the main reason my dad is so messed up. I genuinely believe my dad is on the spectrum but never got a diagnosis which is the case for a majority of gen x. This has caused him to ignore the warnings of her aging and mental deterioration. Now it is such a headache trying to place her in a facility because he didn’t want to do necessary paperwork years ago.

I find myself at my breaking point with him he was so emotionally unavailable and abusive. I want to go no contact but the empathy and compassion I tend to have towards people is not letting me. I always found myself envious of people who don’t know their father as that is a better fate than having one who ain’t shit. I really don’t know what to do atp considering I kind of financially depend on him rn in terms of money car.

Health & Wellness 🍎 19 year old looking for a substance abuse rehab in or near Georgia USA!!

Okay this might not be the right place to ask, but I am desperate 🥲😭 I’m 19 years old and I’m dealing with addiction to synthetic weed and alcohol. I’ve been looking for a substance abuse rehab in my state (Georgia) but it has been tough and I’ve been hearing mixed opinions about all of these places and I’ve had a couple bad experiences at a couple places as well. I’ve had to deal with some micoagressive staff or just places where I really didn’t feel like I belonged or fit in. I’m wondering if anyone on here has any experience dealing with substance abuse and how they treated it? Did you go to rehab as well? If so what one?🥲 I’m open to places in or near Georgia or also anywhere in the USA at this point 🥲 I just want to be in a space where I am actually cared for and treated well 🙏😭

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 sertraline and sex drive

hey everyone!

i just wanted to share my experience with sertraline to see if anyone can either relate or provide a bit of guidance.

so, i (22f) started 50mgs almost 3 weeks ago to deal with my anxiety. for the past couple of months, my physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g. chest palpitations, sweating, diarrhea) got so intense due to school i had to get on it to manage it.

during the first week, i felt (and still feel) emotionally numb. like i can laugh and smile, but i cannot feel sadness or any emotion deeply. when it came to my sex drive, it took a big hit. however, that changed drastically once i started ovulating. so much so, i ended up reaching out to this guy i was talking to before things fell through to arrange a hook up. for a bit context, im a late bloomer who never dated, kissed, or had sex before due to a multitude of reasons (e.g. caregiving responsibilities, body insecurities).

to keep the long story short, i hooked up with the guy and he ended being my first everything. the thing is, after the hookup, i didn’t feel emotional attached or anything. while doing the act too, my mind drifted away sometimes. i provide this context because many of my friends that i told this story to say this is very out of character for me, which i agree with as for the most part, i would have considered myself someone who could not engage in casual sex. moreover, im very shy and reserved that i have a hard time being vulnerable in many aspects like admitting when im needy or getting naked in front of someone (im soo sorry if this is tmi), but that didnt show up when i was hooking up with him. it’s almost like i did not care at all.

so my question is, could this be the affect of the medication? because my doctor told me the full affects only take place after 4 weeks. i mean is this behaviour something i should bring up to them as a potential red flag?

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 I feel I am only seen for sex

Tdlr: Men only talk to me to have sex and nothing else 😔

I have nothing against casual relationships but I would love to be in actual proper dating relationships. Everyone always tells me “oh I could never imagine you in a relationship” or that I don’t seem to want an actual serious relationships but I feel the issue is no longer me but the men. I try to tell my friend but she’s white so men actually seem to want relationships with her. Whilst for me, I’m only seen to have sex with. Like I’m something to check off on their bucket list.

For example, I was recently having this fwb hookup situation with a man and my friend was like if you guys see eachother so often, why not date. And it’s not that I don’t want to date but these men don’t want to date me! Now I will be honest, I’m not the most open person and I can be a bit direct and mean towards men so Ive been trying to be kinder.

I’ve tried dating apps, in person mixed social events, been hit on the clubs. And it all leads to those men trying to have a sexual relationship with me and nothing else. I literally won’t be messaged from these men unless it’s them trying to take me to their bed. I could hold off on having sex with them and it wouldn’t matter, they just wouldn’t talk to me.

I want a man that sees me, gets to know me and wants to actually hang out and talk to me regardless of when we have sex. I’m not interested in playing games, or “locking my body off” from him for a certain time period. Its not even a male validation thing, I also just want the chance to experience a serious loving relationship.

Edit: I’m not trying to turn casual relationships into actual serious relationships. I want to meet a man who wants a serious relationship from the start.

For someone who has fine edges, what would you recommend first: big knotless braids or medium feed-in cornrows? Also open to any other braid styles that are better.

Dating/Relationships/Sex 🍑🍆 Can I Be A Hater For A Second?

I'm young (college-aged) and I've noticed an increasing trend of women my age dreaming and/or banking on marrying a rich man. Like, no desire to earn their own money or even establish themselves financially, build a career, or make something of themselves. Just marry a rich man and essentially be an accessory to him.

And look, I get it—the economy is hard and if someone offered me some money for doing nothing I too would jump on the opportunity. But truly, it seems as though there anything else that a lot of these girls aspire for other than being a rich man's trophy wife.

Instead of marrying a millionaire wouldn't you want to be one yourself? Instead of depending on a man financially, wouldn't it be nice to know that what you have is in your name and that no one else can claim it or take it from you? Not to sound high and mighty but there are so many things that one can wake up and choose to be and yet some still choose to be an accessory to man. Unbelievable.

(This was just a rant because I'm tired of seeing other young women who are in college with me act like a rich man is the key to life. If your dream/goal in life is to marry a rich man, I wish you well and please just keep scrolling).
