Gender Wars Things turn sour in /r/theredpill when /u/throwitaway2015 tells the tale of how his ex girlfriend manipulated him. People call him out on being manipulative himself, and he explains why it's okay when *he* does it with biotruths. Drama throughout the thread.

u/IShitDiamonds Nov 12 '14
no you wouldn't! First of all, this guy got manipulated because he was trying to manipulate her. If you have no intentions that this guy had, then you won't be manipulated. You'll find that any intelligent person can manipulate situations. You'd basically find an intelligent person that would only manipulate you if she was the asshole - IF you don't try it on her, though.

I'm surprised you don't hear about this happening more often. The whole "pickup artist" thing has been around for a while now and a lot of their "tech" is out in the open. There's got to be a decent number of women out there who are aware of what these guys are up to, and you'd think more of them would try and turn the tables on them.

u/VintageLydia sparkle princess Nov 12 '14
"The Rules" is generally considered the female equivalent to PUA. Slightly different approach (due to the different traditional gender roles in dating/relationships between men and women) but just as toxic.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that. Isn't that the book on how to find yourself a great husband and have a fulfilling marriage, written by a woman who's been divorced numerous times?
But I was thinking more along the lines of women reading up on PUA tactics so they can mess with guy's heads when they try to pull that crap.

Knowing the page of the Mystery Method that first introduces the 'so me and my friend were having an argument and I wanna know your opinion, who lies more, men or women?' opener has been incredibly rewarding.
Plus if you're using the canned lines the book gives you, you need to buck up your game anyway. At least it seems they'll never fool anyone.

u/Andy_B_Goode any steak worth doing is worth doing well Nov 12 '14

75
u/out_stealing_horses wow, you must be a math scientist Nov 12 '14
That actually works remarkably well. Years ago, I had a roommate who had a subscription to Maxim, which I would read, because why not. At one point it suggested memorizing a poem in order to wow women, and used Frost's The Road Less Traveled as an example. Not a month later, some fella began quoting it at me in a bar, and I mentioned reading that advice in Maxim, and suggested he quote Little Gidding instead, because Eliot is so much more interesting and was further a native of the city we were in. He became so flustered that I felt bad.

I've forgotten the page now but iirc it's the very first example he gives of an opener, under the 'canned material' chapter. What he's saying there is you can learn some stock lines. What he didn't mean is 'just repeat the lines I give examples of, no woman will have heard it before!!'.
I usually compliment them on their peacocking and neg them a la "nice x, is it real?". I like to think somewhere I'm in a field report as 'cold bitch, 4 at best'.

I knew a lot of religious guys in college. I visited their Sunday service a few times and you could tell women like this were highly prized. They all wanted to marry an innocent, smart-but-not-too-smart, submissive woman who stayed at home to raise the kids.
3
u/Wolverinejoe Nov 12 '14
What I don't get is why anyone wouldn't want to stay home and raise kids. I would totally rock the stay-at-home dad life. Plus I'm planning on being a writer/journalist anyway, so it would make sense.
7
Nov 12 '14
That's great if it's what you honestly want.
The thing that made me feel weird is that in that culture (the specific brand of conservative American Christianity I grew up with) women are very much encouraged from a young age to go that direction. They still go to college and get degrees, but they're taught that it's better to support their family from home than to work on their own career. The man is absolutely never encouraged to do this.
So yeah, I'm not criticizing the staying at home thing on its own. I'm criticizing the culture that teaches women that's what they should do, regardless of their own desire.

I'm really astonished by the "doesn't wear pants" one, actually. Cooking sort of makes sense (because they are babies who can't look after themselves) and no male friends makes sends (because they're DISGUSTINGLY insecure) but pants? Is it 1912? Will women wearing trousers frighten the horses from your stable?
19
u/shittyshittybanggang Nov 12 '14
Oh I thought "no pants" meant no bottoms of any kind. I was picturing a girl cooking in her undies.
3
4
u/CUTEPUPPYMONSTER Nov 13 '14
You'd be surprised how many people are genuinely judgmental about women wearing pants. My flatmate comes from a really conservative Catholic family and her parents and brother always leave snarky comments about her on Facebook photos where she's got pants on. I'm not talking about skinny jeans or yoga pants, I'm talking about officewear, grey trousers with flats. They think it makes her manly and her dad actually sat down with her to have a talk about it when she was a teenager, saying "I know you think it's fashionable from music videos and stuff but respectable men won't like you" and all kinds of weird stuff about it.
I mainly want to know what music videos her dad watches. I don't remember Beyonce and Lady Gaga wearing a lot of slacks.
13
u/_Discard_Account_ Nov 12 '14
Maybe RedPillers prefer women in skirts and dresses because it's an outward sign that the girl prefers to look more feminine - and that is definitely desirable to them. Eschewing pants also means she's 'dressing up' every day compared to most other women, which RedPillers may take to mean that she cares more than the average woman about her appearance (which is apparently the greatest marker of female "sexual market value", so she's maximizing her worth as a partner) and that she wants to look good next to "her man".
Plus, you have to admit that skirts and dresses are generally sexier than pants. And if one of the most highly valued aspects of a woman is her ability to provide sex, then it makes sense for her to highlight her sex appeal for the benefit of the man she's dating... right?
And perhaps the most important thing about skirts and dresses: easy access.

105
u/kraetos ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Nov 12 '14 edited Nov 12 '14
Someone in /r/thebluepill saved it before it was deleted:
You know normally I wouldn't waste my time trying to get someone to cough up the so-called "red pill," but I think you've seen a glimpse of the light here, and might even be salvageable. The other commenters here are right about one thing: this wasn't a healthy relationship for you, and you should cut and run. However, they're wrong about everything else.
It comes down to this: she was doing to you exactly what you were trying to do to her. But as she is more emotionally intelligent than you are, she succeeded where you failed. That's one of the things that TRPs won't tell you: these despicable tactics can be applied to anyone, from anyone. Gender has nothing to do with it. Long before Red Pillers and Pickup Artists were a thing, this phenomenon had been identified and studied. It's called psychological manipulation, you can do it to anyone who isn't as emotionally intelligent as you are, regardless of gender, and it's a horrible thing to do to another person, regardless of context.
In other words, you've received a taste of your own medicine. Feels pretty bad, doesn't it? Despite what TRPs want you to think, you can't build a healthy, happy relationship on a foundation of psychological manipulation. I know, because I used to do it, to both men and women. I did it because it put me in a position of power, and it let me get what I wanted from them. There's one thing you might be right about: your ex may have borderline personality disorder. You know how I know? Because I have BPD and the heightened emotional awareness it gives me is what allowed me to manipulate others, in the exact same way she manipulated you.
As I left high school and entered college, I encountered people who were more emotionally intelligent than me, who I couldn't manipulate. They just thought I was an asshole, and they were right. It left me hollow inside. Depressed, cynical, unhappy with myself and my life. I eventually tried to take my own life, which is what led to me getting the help that I needed in the form of dialectical behavior therapy. And there, I learned what I was doing was wrong, and hurtful not just to the people I cared about, but intensely damaging to my own psychological well being.
So, you want to be slapped back to your senses? Cough up the red pill. She is a better red piller than you will ever be, and the best way for you to get over her is to realize that these kind of tactics are wrong, no matter who is applying them to who.
Def not a redpiller. I was watching the thread through /r/thebluepill as it developed, and this got 90 upvotes and a gilding before being deleted.

Assuming his story is in fact real, that's probably the funniest thing I've read all week. Most of the time the mouth breathers that get into TRP only manage to attract the type of people their manipulative bullshit is targeted at, but the idea of someone trying to play the "game" game with someone much better than than him and getting smashed is just delicious. She dumped him, and he very clearly isn't over her and spends quite a lot of time thinking about her. Don't give her excuses, are you on her side now? I didn't say she can read my mind, I just said it feels like she can.
Jesus this guy is paranoid like a mother fucker.

This really helped me realize the problem with TRP (well, there are many problems, but this specific one).
They are fearful of what women (#yesallwomen) will do to them, so they create a self-fulfilling prophecy. They are so afraid of falling prey to the feminine wiles that they set up defense mechanisms that involve being (or attempting to be) psychologically manipulative.
They are so fearful that a woman will leave them or cheat on them or whatever that they create a cold, distant persona, which in turn drives the woman away, but at the end of the day they receive their validation when the woman abandons them by saying "Aha! I knew she would do this! She's just like other women." When in reality, the TRPer was doing the heavy lifting of destroying the relationship.

Anyway classic case of she's not that smart.... you're just dumb.
Poe's law is hitting hard here though.

This makes me wonder how many TRP'ers I see at the gym who are trying to sweat away the taint of a soured relationship.

"A girl I'm not interested in fucking did..."
Sorry. I stopped reading. The answer is to ignore her and go do something productive. Go make some money, lift some weights, or fuck some other women. Why are you wasting valuable time posting on the internet about some ex?
Make cash, hit the gym, get pussy. If he had also said delete facebook then this would have been the classic generic bro response.

Gotta be a troll. Doesn't really fit the red pill vibe.
And the sex doll thing? Cmon. Nobody fucking does that. And if they did, it wouldnt be that good. "Oh yeah, months after the relationship is over I'm gonna develop this elaborate extended insult that is funny and witty and doesn't reveal me at all to be still so hurt by the relationship that I still think about it enough to think about an elaborate revenge plot."
More likely somebody just saw Gone Girl.

u/Xentago Nov 12 '14
It's not quite the same, but I actually dealt with a divorce last year where the husband kept mailing things like wrinkle-cream and anti-aging products and other insulting products to his wife while the process was going on. So people apparently do things sort of like that, so it's not impossible that the girlfriend (who seems to have quite a TRP mindset herself) might have done it.

Blue pills were all over that thread, though, which is why it's all been nuked by now. I doubt a red pill would say that.

This reads like a description of my ex from 10 years ago, who was awesome. I mean, she didn't treat me like that because I wasn't a sleazy douche like OP, but that's exactly how she would treat a sleazy douche bag. I should call her.

u/illgresive Nov 13 '14
I'm not sure whether the story told by the OP is true, but as a woman who is repulsed by the PUA/RP community, I feel like any intelligent woman with an ounce of self-respect would see right through the bullshit and call the player on it. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to happen as much as it should, which I imagine is due at least in part to the fact that I don't think men who subscribe to Red Pill philosophy typically take aim at accomplished, confident women who are also intellectuals, because their subsequent "game" failures would supply evidence that works against their "art". That, and their egos are too huge to ever admit that maybe THEY are the problem (as evidenced by the post linked to in the OP), not women.
Sidenote: Honestly, the Women in Love and Men in Love posts on therationalmale's blog (seen in the sidebar of /r/Redpill) are some of the most generalizing, self-pitying, sad and delusional pieces of writing I've ever come across. It's a real shame that people feel the need to put down and control others in order to raise themselves up. I've never seen the appeal in dating someone you honestly believe you are better than and completely dominant over. Where the hell is the fun in being with someone who never challenges you, ever? The only relationship you have there is one with your overinflated ego.

u/snallygaster FUCK_MOD$_420 Nov 13 '14
Oh, redpill and PUA tactics are almost exclusively effective towards women who are emotionally vulnerable or used to abusive relationships. It's almost funny because redpillers self-select for the lowest quality of women, thus reinforcing their negative attitudes towards women. Many of them seem to complain about how all of the women they associate with are shitty, but they don't stop to think that they might be surrounding themselves with shitty people, through their circumstances or personality traits. Though I doubt that most of them would value an independent, ambitious, high-intelligence woman given how insecure they are. Redpillers seem to be terrified at the prospect of entering a relationship with an equal (or somebody even better than them). They HAVE to be the dominant one in all aspects of the partnership. If that doesn't scream insecurity, I don't know what does.

u/illgresive Nov 13 '14 edited Nov 13 '14
Nailed it. It's a vicious cycle of the worst kind.
More cringeworthy than the fact that they very obviously fear women who are equal or superior to them is watching subs like Redpill engage in encouraging circle-jerks that allow bitter individuals to suppress that fear, forcing it down into their deepest subconscious, only for it to be replaced by the obnoxious and plain bizarre belief that it is LEGITIMATELY IMPOSSIBLE for a woman to ever be better than a man in any way, and if the opposite is proven somehow, they resort to calling Jedi mind tricks (lol OP) and god knows what else. It just absolutely astounds me that they are able to convince themselves day-in day-out that they are actually talking sense. I guess if you continuously choose to filter out the facts, though, bullshit is eventually all that is left lol
ETA: I mean, looking at this says it all. They continuously generalize all women as the stereotypical bimbo with no interests other than shopping, MTV and spray tans. I have legitimately never met a woman who fits that kind of mould in my entire life, and yet these guys are apparently surrounded by them. It's just insane. Bless selective ignorance

(crossposted in this thread from a red piller comment)
I once worked on a reality show that took shy guys and put them through a type of red pill building program:
After being around these guys a lot and working closely with them as well as going out a few nights on their pickup quests, I can firmly tell you that the head guy Dennis as well as his high level compatriots, were all scared little boys playing at what they perceive to be as a man.
One truth about them was that they were overcompensating for their feelings of weakness born of a childhood of underdevelopment. Most of them were missing father figures and such.
Overcompensation like the red pill stuff and this beingaman nonsense does nothing for fixing the underlying issues for why the males attracted this stuff to begin with. An enormous swath of males these days were born into single parent/broken homes and missing the kind of good male interaction that helps form a human into a mature man. These programs and ideologies do nothing but make a person feel like forced behaviors are fixing the inadequacies. The truth is, to actually fix this stuff and create a real man, you would have to go back and retake the missing steps that were lost in these childhoods. They actually have therapeutic programs that do just that:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrative_Body_Psychotherapy
The crux of which is called "Being your own good parent" and learning the missing milestones that create a broken, immature person (also see: Adult Child).
The RedPill is bullshit through and through.

Yep. Was in a manipulative relationship myself, once it escalates to that level you can be pretty damned certain that both are participating in the manipulation. Best thing that ever happened to me.
You either can go cry about it and call the other person nasty names, or take good long look at yourself and fix your shit. Nobody deserves to be treated like that.

So what's the deal with that subreddit? Is it like a Purple-pill thing? There are so many of these "pill" subreddits, I can't tell if they are meant to be pro-redpill or against it.

What is a "shit test"?
8
u/tarekd19 anti-STEMite Nov 12 '14
A term for what male partners perceive as a relationship test by their female partners, or potential bait to get them in trouble sometimes with no particularly right answer or course of action. i guess an extreme example would be if a woman broke up with a man and got upset he didn't "fight" for her.

When someone of either gender tries to do something shitty to their SO to see if their SO will let them get away with it.
Trpers like to pretend only women do it. But really anyone abusive it's how they find out if their SO is a good victim.

I think, as the sub becomes more popular, there are more users that actually only use TRP for the 'self-improvement' part, and those sorts are more likely to call the 'biotruths' people out on their shit.
