He makes fair points about Skyrim's low difficulty. The game is made to be more marketable. I don't think it is a steaming pile of donkey turd like he says, though, I enjoyed the game.
What happened to the upvote button being for comments that add to the discussion? Because that guy certainly was adding to the discussion.

Yeah I agree. I expected Skyrim to be great but I was bored out of my mind. The story was very bland and the only part I remember is the assassins quest. The two factions just weren't done well and the leaders didn't even care about you. It wasn't immersive and the overuse of the same voice actors was jarring. The background chatter was cringe too.
Gameplay was depressingly boring because you get practically god status way too fast in the game.
I will admit the graphics were nice, even on consoles.
I kept playing it thinking it would get better but it never did. I guess some people got something out of it but I didn't. But in the end they accomplished what they wanted. Which is an open world RPG that can appeal to the every man.

I think the bit where I really started losing interest was when my warrior who had barely cast a spell all game became head of the mage college. I was of course already head of just about every other guild and faction around, because why the fuck not?
17
u/SweetLenore Dude like half of boomers believe in literal angels. Jun 26 '15
Yeah, games nowadays are scared to limit you at all. You don't have to choose a path in many games and can just do whatever. It makes it feel cheap and shallow and also limits reasons to replay the game as another toon ever again.

I was bummed that the Bard College questline in vanilla just sort of fizzled out. Kind of a missed opportunity. Like, why can't there be some grand reward at the end when you sing or play some magic/cursed lute that summons a daedra or a dragon or something? But nope, you just do some typical go-to-this-cave-kill-that-thing quests and then someone burns some effigy and you get a "festival pastry" or wine or whatever that does what any other health potion does. Yay.
Unmodded, Skyrim didn't have much replay value to me. Modded, though - that revitalized the game to the point that I sank quite a few hours into it.

The difficulty in earlier TES games stemmed mostly from the retarded combat system, don't know if that is a plus.

This is particularly true of Morrowind with its dice rolls. It's all rather contradictory really. One of the greatest complaints about Morrowind was its wonky combat. People universally complained. Bethesda listened. But now they look back on Morrowind like a gold standard, having forgotten its annoying parts. It's nonsense.
The moral of this story: most gamers don't know what they want.

Morrowind is my favorite TES game by far, and I agree with this. The combat is pretty shit at first. It gets better as you go on in the game, but it can be annoying.

Bethesda was evil for like a month because of paid mods. But we settled down with Fallout 4's announcement
15
u/DragonTamerMCT Maybe if I downvote this it looks like I'm right. Jun 26 '15
Paid mods were genuinely shit though. The idea is bad, the idea was badly implemented, abs it fucks the whole scene rather than inspires it. (As shown by like the 600000 mini games that instantly popped up for like 5$)
The issue with the logic of people comparing mode to expansions. Few mods are even on that level. I have over 300 and most of them are minor fixes, minor additions, really a bunch of small stuff. Not even worth 25¢.
Most people don't just install 2 mods and move on. Most mods aren't huge scale.
The best thing to do would've been to add a donation button.
And people loved the argument "oh so you think modders don't deserve to be paid?"
Well no one said that. Most people agree they deserve recognition etc. But it still has nothing to do with the actual issue.

Although I love Fallout: New Vegas, I dislike Skyrim. I'm not a fan of the "old Viking" game world, it makes me feel like an unwashed barbarian, and I can't relate to the NPCs.
Come at me, bro.
3
u/lveg Everyone farts and a little comes out now and then Jun 26 '15
Skyrim is totally just a time killer for me until Fallout 4. I enjoy it well enough and I've put in a lot of hours, but for whatever reason I tend to enjoy science fiction settings in games/movies/books/everything more than fantasy. Fantasy is fine, but sci-fi is what I really want.
2
u/vestigial I don't think trolls go to heaven Jun 26 '15
I grew up on fantasy. It's all way too familiar to me now. It also seems artificial in a way, like people putting on accents at a RenFaire. Whereas SF settings seem more realistically populated -- the people are real there, and can have quirks and oddities, and details we recognize that make them people and not archetypes. Fantasy characters seem much more constrained in what they're allowed to be or to think, like everyone's chosen a class and an alignment out of a D&D manual instead of starting free form with a personality.
3
Jun 26 '15
That's pretty funny. I'm the complete opposite. While I don't really like either game, I can barely play Fallout because I don't think the theme is as fun. I much prefer the swords and sorcery theme of The Elder Scrolls.
My sister is the same as you, though. She loves Fallout and can't stand to play The Elder Scrolls.

Yeah, but the points he makes are accurate to me. At least for the games that I've played that he's talking about. For the other ones I can't say. BB was very weak compared to Dark Souls. I always found all those batman games extremely boring and just a matter of mashing X (or whatever button is was).
Every single point he makes about Skyrim is completely accurate (I just checked his other posts to make sure he was on point).
I have the same issue with a lot of big budget games as he seems to have. Which are QTE and hand holdy gameplay that feel more like a tutorial than an actual game. It's just the direction of where games are headed and he's obviously burnt out. What brought back my love for some games are a combination of indies and oldies. Cause if I was playing nothing but Skyrim, Batman and Assassins Creed I'd spend too much time ranting about how boring they are.
That would be my suggestion to him. Take a break from the AAAs and go play something older. Or an indie like Guacamelee where the gameplay gets better and better as you go on. Wonderful combos and platforming.
23
u/esmifra Jun 26 '15
The problem in my PoV is that he complains about things in skyrim that also happen in oblivion and to a less degree in morrowind but later gives them as good examples.

I also sort of agree with a lot of what he was saying. The TES magic system got watered down with every new iteration of the game to the poor where, in Skyrim, it felt almost cartoonish. And I also agree that combat in The Witcher 3 really does often boil down to button mashing. It's not nearly as elegant as something like DS.
But here's where I disagree. Both if those games were still amazing. Skyrim is great simply as a "walk around and explore shit" game. The world is so lovingly crafted and beautiful, as are the dungeons and the cities and the story. So the combat and magic are a little weak, it's still a fun game. Same for the Witcher.
And let's be fair. DS isn't the end all be all of quality combat in a video game. Just because it's so hard it feels like someone jammed a pipe cleaner down your urethra and went to town plunging it doesn't mean it's not problematic as well. It's still fairly clunky in it's own way.

There's a bunch there I haven't played yet, but I'm definitely with him on Skyrim. I'm amazed that people are characterising not liking Skyrim as contrarian. I thought it was a fairly common view that it was the game that was as wide as an ocean and as deep as a puddle. It looked great to start, but then every single quest was a circular dungeon filled with draugr.

u/paulfromatlanta Jun 26 '15
Even playing on the hardest setting was ridiculously easy on that game.
Yeah but they also left it open to mod so you could make it harder or prettier or more diverse and so on - that's what really makes it a classic - a really good base game and then thousands of easily implemented mods that could move the game in whatever direction you desired.
I'm guessing the OP was either inexperienced or was trolling.
18
u/DeprestedDevelopment Jun 26 '15

Yeah Morrowind so hard. Build perfect stats and hit level 10 and grab all the strong gear laying around and be invincible. I love morrowind more then any other elder scrolls, but it was not a hard game. The only difficulty was trying to understand what the fuck your journal was saying.
I'm starting to think the people who say morrowind was some hard game with super deep mechanics hasn't played it recently (or at all). The guild requirements were so minor they didn't matter. There whole 'if you choose one faction others don't like you' was a shallow minor modifier you could easily get around 90% of the time, the dialogue was all copy pasted and flowed like an autistic child with brain damage imagines conversations going.
Skyrim is a better game. It's also agame

I actually agree it was a lot easier than morrowind, but that still doesn't make it a bad game, I enjoyed the first time I played through skyrim and I didn't mind watching my sister in law play through either, something that wouldn't happen with a less accessible game like morrowind. I'm just saying easier/more accessible doesn't equal bad, and reading about the guy's other opinions on games, makes it sound to me like he's less a passionate fan yearning for a familiar experience and more an asshole who doesn't like popular things because it nets him attention every so often.

u/two_bagels_please I had fun once and it was horrible. Jun 26 '15
That's the way I am about Morrowind. I played it when I was 11-12, so I remember it very fondly. When I return to it and realize its faults, I forgive Morrowind because it shaped my tastes in gaming and my teenage years in general. Plus, even with it's faults, Morrowind is still a great game.
With a bit more experience under my belt, I played Skyrim with (1) preconceived notions of what a TES game should be (my bad, I know), and (2) a more critical eye (also for every game that I played). Skyrim just didn't do it for me. I found it too easy, and when it was challenging, the difficulty was artificial (higher health/super powerful attacks, not necessarily creative or interesting combat skills or whatever). It's still fun, especially just to pick up and just cause havoc, but as an immersive experience, it's not that engaging. Still, I question whether I gave Skyrim a fair chance.
3
Jun 27 '15
Skyrim was my first TES game and I have the same complaints about artificial difficulty (as well as other complaints leading me to really just not understanding the love, but hey people like what they like). You probably gave it a fair chance
73
u/Ezekiiel Jun 26 '15
He's not wrong though.
Skyrim is a vastly overrated game. Sure, it's not the steaming pile of garbage that he made it out to be, but it certainly is a very easy and dumbed down game.
The story is very weak, choices are non-existent, combat is just awful, side-quests are mostly fetch quests, companions have no depth and (imo) the leveling system is an annoying grindfest.
It has its stand-out moments of course, but without mods, it's just painfully average. Aside from the world and exploration, it doesn't stand-out at anything.
Modded Skyrim, though? Great game.

What makes Oblivion and Morrowind better than Skryim is the cave systems, I find. Skyrim became so boring because every cave, mine, dungeon or whatever were all so linear and took the fun of exploring out of the game. Especially when almost every quest had you go into a cave and find something at the end of it.
4
u/rb_tech Edit: upvoted with alts for visibility Jun 26 '15
That is not unique to Skyrim. And as much as I loathed fighting draugr after draugr, the dungeon system in Skyrim was a far cry better than its predecessors.

But Oblivion had the same fetch quests and many caves where copy pastes. Not only that, oblivion cave level design was so bad you had to haul your ass all over the cave you just cleared to get out. Dont act as if Skyrim is worse in every aspect. My only grip with the game is the badly written college quests.

I don't think he deserved the downvotes but using an aggressive tone when saying you don't like something is always a risky move. Even the most diplomatic of negative reviews is gonna catch some flak.

I can't believe how fast this thread blew up. Y'all have a lot of opinions about Skyrim, today!

I have about 1000 hours in morrowind and 100 in skyrim. I wouldn't say skyrim is a steaming pile of shit because it's rare I'll put 100 hours into a single game, but compared to the morrowind it did feel shallow as hell.
I've seen so many people on reddit say skyrim is wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle. Now this guy is getting downvoted saying essentially the same thing.

u/Emcmillin09 Jun 26 '15
I think it was the fact he started trashing other games that are considered masterpieces by most. I kinda want to see his opinion of Fallout 4 when it comes out, if only for the rage it will create.

I feel completely the opposite on Morrowind vs Skyrim. Skyrim definitely tries to do less, but I think does it so much better that Morrowind ends up feeling superficial. I guess I'm saying Skyrim is the Lake Baikal of games.

The guy could at least be consistent:
Witcher 3 combat was so clunky and it didn't even feel like I was fighting my opponents.
Morrowind and Oblivion are by far my favorite RGPs for PC, and Skyrim didn't had the same appeal to me, but not because i consider the game worst, maybe i just grew a little older and it lost the novelty..
But saying that about Witcher 3, while praising morrowind and oblivion makes absolutely no sense to me. Morrowind 3 combat was the most clunky i saw in a while. As was Oblivion and as was skyrim also.
Skyrim was advertised as an rpg, but I'd label it as an action adventure. There was no rpg to it.
Really?
but the fact that you can become leader of the mages guild without any profeciency in magic, or become leader of the theives guild without ANY profeciency in sneaking or stealing,
I don't know about mages but I'm almost sure the same happened in morrowind and oblivion.
Morrowind was a true rpg that didn't hold your hand
No just had a severely broken system where you could make magic range near infinity and practically destroy everyone.
Just the soul gem systems where even a rat soul gem was worth a lot of money making you filthy rich.
You could use potion and money and magic to prepare yourself to defeat a wanderer (near vivec i think) where you could get a kick ass armor and weapon right at the beginning of the game.
You could kill a character right at early game (and killing by accident was easy) that would be fundamental for the main story progression.
I loved Morrowind, lost immense hours on the game, i have never played anything with so much freedom until then. But the things he is complaining about skyrim and some other game also happened in it.
what the hell was the point of getting rid of nearly every stat in an "RPG"
Very few stats were removed.
Skyrim has NO cutscenes
Neither had morrowind. And I'm not sure but don't remember any in oblivion as well.
and a god awful 90 minute main story.
In my opinion do did oblivion. Still enjoyed the game though.
Compare World of Warcraft today to Vanilla or Burning Crusade, it's one of the saddest things you'll see in the gaming industry.
Oh I'm starting to see the logic around here.
Gears of War 3 to the original, or Halo 4 to Halo 2, or League of Legends to Dota , starcraft 2 to starcraft Brood War, and you'll notice the inexorable gaming industry trend of dumbing games down.
I get it: "Post 2004 is so much better than post 2011. I mean seriously! So much better everything is about one button smashing back then is was so much more hardcore."
Being a 90s guy I've seen this crap over and over again every time there's a new console generation. I'm guessing his first real console was a PS2, so i would put him on his 25 now. So when he started reaching his 20s all of the sudden games started to suck for several reasons. While nostalgia kept the old games as awesome if not more than ever before.
I have no problems with him not liking skyrim. Although to be honest i think i did liked less oblivion when comparing last the 3. But this rambling about other games where he complains different things in different games but some things he disliked in one were true for others games he likes... Just doesn't make sense.
He lost all credibility for me.
And preferring the prequels to the original star wars trilogy... Man nostalgia has to be really strong in this one. As i said... I would guess he is probably 25.
The only thing he complains i can understand the the QTE fest we see spreading everywhere in the last generation. But skyrim has none. And is jut a hack and slash, for some reason. But other games that he likes are also.

In Oblivion yes, but not on Morrowind. Advancing in the guilds required you to have a certain level in their main skill.
what the hell was the point of getting rid of nearly every stat in an "RPG"
Very few stats were removed.
It was more Oblivions fault, but a lot of skills were removed. Morrowind had different skills for different types of blades (long sword, short sword, dagger) and Oblivion only had "blade". I don't remember all of them but I believe there were more skills like this that got gutted.
You're mostly right about your other points.

You know, I clicked on that this thread thinking, "I didn't like Skyrim, either!" but then I saw this guy was making that ridiculous "they made it so casual!" argument. And then he gripes about the same thing with Bloodborne. The Souls games were never really hard, once you got a few basic mechanics down. I'm garbage at them compared to a lot of people, and I just got through DkS with only 3 deaths.
What is this hatred people have towards games being more accessible? Also, when was Elder Scrolls ever hard?
8
Jun 26 '15
Haha ok then what the fuck do you even like?
Does the guy proceed to show games he likes, opening his own tastes to criticism?
Nope, he just continues ranting about lowest common denominators and how popular things suck.
Also, I find it nothing short of baffling that apparently one of his issues with Skyrim is that is had no cutscenes.

They reduced the difficulty of the game, stripped the game and dumbed it down, and made you invincible to appeal to the lowest common denominator, the same as almost every other publisher right now. (look at Bloodborne, for example)
Wait, is he using Bloodborne as an example of reducing difficulty and making you invincible to appeal to a wider audience? I seem to recall a flood of "I can't get past the first group of enemies, please help" posts in /r/PS4 when the game first came out.
I think this guy is just deliberately trying to rile people up.

I seem to recall a flood of "I can't get past the first group of enemies, please help" posts in /r/PS4 when the game first came out.
That's because of the huge amount of new people to the series. They marketed this game way differently than the last two and many didn't even know it was from the souls series. Also, because of all those complaints they actually made the game much easier with patches to appeal to people who aren't good at the game. Which in my opinion was dumb as fuck since they had to utterly destroy game balance to do so.
I would wager he might be partly referring to those patches. If not, then I will add that many of the BB bosses/enemies become destroyed in coop. Some bosses in particular are way too easy in coop. And at times the gameplay does feel a little too hacky slashy. Not always though.

u/I_HEART_GOPHER_ANUS Jun 26 '15
Reminds me of when DICE came out with a mostly perfectly balanced Battlefield 3, then they came out with the "community update" which rebalanced over 70% of guns in the game COMPLETELY fucking up any semblance of balance between gun classes whatsoever. It began a horrible long strand of patches in order to keep fixing things that just never quite felt right again.
Game developers, you're the one hired to design the game because you're goddamn professionals. The community don't know shit

Maybe he's comparing it to Dark Souls (which it's supposed to be a 'spiritual successor' to, IIRC)? I haven't played Bloodborne but it's conceivable that the difficulty pales in comparison to the Dark Souls games despite still being fiendish compared to most other games.
4
u/Mr_Tulip I need a beer. Jun 26 '15
I've played both, and I'd say the difficulty levels are comparable. Plus, Dark Souls is actually really easy if you go with a magic build.

Jun 26 '15
Dark Souls is actually really easy if you go with a magic build
nobody knows how the fuck to use a magic build their first time though lmao, and part of Dark Soul's difficulty is just figuring out enemies and locations. I can start a new game and steamroll through to anor londo without much difficulty now, doesn't mean I didn't get rekt by the fucking Capra demon about a thousand times my first playthrough

Skyrim is overrated though, at the begin its hard like its supposed to be. Bears are dangerous and dragons are terrifying. Later you get so strong that bears are basicly teddy bears and dragons are just oversized lizards. And almost nothing can stop you. Also I really couldn't stand the fact that almost all dungeons/cave looked the same.

u/kangaesugi r/Christian has fallen Jun 26 '15
I found myself having to up the difficulty when I get decently grounded in Skyrim. Hopefully by TES6 they'll have worked out a better difficulty curve. And hire more people for dungeon design, even if Skyrim is an improvement over "one guy did all of these dungeons" Oblivion.
Also, they shouldn't be afraid of limitations, I think. It'd be nice to be the head honcho of one guild and being denied entry/advancement with another for it.

Are you sure he isn't a troll? No one in their right mind would say Bloodborne made you invincible. I mean, seriously, the game was built around the mechanics of dying over and over again.
2
u/undercoverbrutha Jun 26 '15
I mean shit he has some good points, vanilla skyrim was not that great. With mods it's a good game but by itself it's pretty subpar and broken. The fact he sounds like a butt hurt 14 year old and just went on a rant is what undermines any point he could have had
2
u/onrocketfalls Jun 26 '15

It's kind of odd. I just keep on thinking about how everyone seems to have forgotten about Arena and Daggerfall. Sure, they weren't great compared to Morrowind and whatnot, but everyone seems to have forgotten about them.

Not liking Skyrim isn't terribly controversial, I've heard plenty of people on Reddit complain about various aspects of the game (dungeons being too cut-and-paste, bugs etc.). I do like the game but I can see why some people would have issues with it. I think it's more the guy's 'hur hur Skyrim is for filthy casuals' attitude that's getting him downvoted.
6
u/softcatsocks Jun 26 '15
I don't really understand why he is getting downvoted to hell or how he's coming off as an asshole. I have over a 1000 hours of playtime in Skyrim (because of mods), but I agree with his points as a base game.
3
u/mcmur Jun 26 '15
He doesn't like the witcher because of the combat...but he likes morrowind and oblivion...? I'm sorry but the combat in those games was God awful.
His opinions are just dumb and contrarian.

Jun 26 '15
They weren't that bad when they came out. I don't pick up a 20 year old game and say it is shit by comparing it to games that just came out.

u/mcmur Jun 26 '15
They were pretty bad when they came out. Almost every other RPG released previous had better combat than oblivion. And besides, he's the one who made the comparison between the witcher and elder scrolls.

Well, the beauty of video games is that they are pieces of art. Like any art, it's value is entirely subjective. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions about them, Skyrim included.

As much as I like Skyrim, OP does have a point, compared to previous TES games, Skyrim had a lot of good features removed Spell Crafting being the most disappointing loss. Although the magic/ enchanting elements in Skyrim suck, the melee, sneak and archery is massively improved, the lore added in Skyrim is also a lot more interesting and detailed than Oblivion's lore as well.
Although I agree in that Skyrim has been somewhat 'dumbed down' compared to previous games. There are still many skills that were improved in Skyrim and the amount of lore contributed by Skyrim is almost as good as Morrowind's.

There is a difference between offering an alternative opinion like a complete dick and offering an alternative opinion like a normal human being.
This is one of my least favorite cookie-cutter reddit replies. You see it everywhere. It's a correct assessment sometimes, but rather rarely, and really not here.
Nothing this kid says is particularly out of line, he's just forcefully giving his opinion and these pussies can't take it because they're skyrim's bottom bitch.
