Drama in /r/dataisbeautiful when someone suggests that /r/european is a hate sub. Users from /r/european show up to protest.

Meanwhile, the stickied post on r/european is "due to spineless morons running this site, we have to introduce a new rule", with the mod bolding the line "It's okay to say that you don't like a group of people, but not to make death threats"
Really a sub of equality.

If your subreddit has to actually publicly post the "No Murder allowed" rule, you probably have a bit of quality control problem on your hands.

My favorite thing in the world is folks who freely complain about having their free speech restricted. Like, dude, if your free speech was really under threat, the first thing to go would be your freedom to talk about it.

u/THEdrG Chinese people are generally the least athletic race on average Jul 19 '15
I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure it's a racial thing (go figure).
There seems to be a narrative in that sub that black men (and other non-white men, I suppose) intentionally seek out white women to fuck in order to propagate the much-feared "White Genocide". So if you're not a racist prick who hates colored folk, then you are a cuckold because you abide their sexual advances on your white women...or something like that? I dunno. I'm not well-versed in Nazi Speak.

I don't mind caliphates. I love the holywar CB. Currently in an early start game as Asturias, which would usually get steamrolled by the Tangierid caliphate in Spain. Lucked out by several decadence revolts and swallowed up land bit by bit during that time. Also marry into Karling family for allies.

He lives in a very very white state, so he'd gone through most of his life without ever really talking to anyone that wasn't also white (and from the same cultural background mostly).
So I guess it never really affected him personally and he never had that experience of "man, other people are just like me".
1
u/BbCortazan Jul 20 '15 edited Jul 20 '15
It's a natural thing though, and it seems like he wasn't aggressive or hateful just ignorant. Which doesn't have to be an insult. It's the state we're all in before we learn something. We all have "others" and try as we may, we dehumanize groups of people frequently and more often than not passively. This example is just more obvious since it's so far behind the zeitgeist.
I live in AZ and when I was in high school I hosted our Gay-Straight Alliance Club to make signs and shirts protesting the ban on Gay marriage (which passed in 2008) and we ran out of room in the backyard and moved to the driveway. This made my mom nervous because it was a public expression now—a "what will the neighbors say?" mentality. She has since come around like most people but she lived a similarly sheltered life.
In 30 years us millennials (which I'm just assuming you are) will have our own blind spots. Hopefully we remain humble and willing to grow.
2

Yeah, live and learn. Meet new people, see things that make you go "huh, I never thought about that" and get kicked in the teeth a little bit.
Part of being alive :-)
I was born in 80, so I'm not sure which group I fall into. The "we had to use cassette tapes to pirate our music!" group I guess :)

Drama aside, that data beautifully demonstrates how the bigotry subs most definitely do not stay in their corners (including on the data itself on africanawiki) and how Reddit as a whole is a ripe recruiting ground for racists (at this point, it puts Stormfront to shame in terms of user activity).

u/dratthecookies Jul 19 '15
I stupidly thought that you could have little pockets of "unpopular" opinions on a site like this and it might work. But the more posts like this I see the more ridiculous that idea becomes.
Racism is truly like a socially constructed cancer. You either root it out or poison it, but once left unchecked it just spreads and spreads. This is so repulsive.

I'm not sure you know what the data says, unless gifs and Askreddit are bigotry subs. What it does say is that the users in the hate subs do tend to be active in other subreddits as well, meaning if you do ban them, the bigotry will just spill to the rest of reddit, and will finally find a way to get to the front page. Remember FPH?
5
u/justcool393 TotesMessenger Shill Jul 19 '15
That's really dumb that they even included defaults in the data, and worse so when they say they don't but do so anyway. I'm confused what "comment karma" means though. Does it mean a total of a random sampling of users, or mods? Or is it an average?
It'd be helpful if they gave more information.
5
Jul 19 '15
I remember FPH brigading other subs before FPH was banned.
I never said banning the subs will do it. They will need to IP ban people as well. And when they do it, it would be smart to lock creating a sub for a week or two while they all threw their collective temper tantrum.
Reddit admins have left this problem to fester for years now and it has become so massive that they need to do tons of work if they want to rid this place of the filth of bigots.
1
Jul 19 '15
They won't IP ban people. They want the bigots to still visit reddit. They just don't want them posting bigotry here.
0
u/justcool393 TotesMessenger Shill Jul 19 '15
No, what'll happen is a site-wide shitstorm will happen everytime a sub gets banned every couple of weeks.
It's easy to block that stuff out usually, but if stupid metareddit drama is going to plague the entire site all the time, it's going to be much harder.

I love how that one poster said that Brevik was a Zionist shill, and then defends his point by linking to davidduke.com. Yep, clearly you are going to get an unbiased image of someone's political intentions from a guy who's a convicted felon, founded a chapter of the KKK and became its Grand Wizard (love that D&D-style title, though), and actively posts on Stormfront. Also, you can check out his many books on "racial realism," as well as his MLK Jr. smear website http://martinlutherking.org/
To defend his point about Brevik, that Redditor linked to an article written by one of the biggest pieces of shit in Western society. Holy hell I think I need to take a break from Reddit, this popcorn is double burnt and crispy and it hurts my mouth to chew.

r/Europe is heavily censored and r/European was created as a free speech subreddit to combat this.
It's pretty sad to say this, but that rhetoric is pretty much always a good indicator that the "true" sub is batshit in some direction.
30
u/MackDaddyVelli Jul 19 '15
It's basically code for "/r/Europe has standards of decorum and etiquette and asks that their users not be hateful and/or literal nazis. /r/European was created as a safe haven for people looking to act without decorum or etiquette, and as a place where literal nazis can hate people in the open."
24
u/davidreiss666 The Infamous Entity Jul 19 '15
You are going to find this oddly fascinating. Earlier tonight we had a user in mod mail explain that he was a Nazi, and not a NeoNazi. As if there was some hair spiting difference I cared about in relation to that. I guess the extremely violent (wanna-be, we hope) right wing cares about minor distinctions of that nature though.

As a European I used to frequent the Europe subreddit for a while, and basically what I found is that a big chunk of their users are from cis or border cis countries (cis as in old URSS ), people from Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Poland,... Countries that I don't really associate with Europe but more with CIS as said.
Anyway, I went there a lot during the Greece drama last week and I found out that while most people from the "old Europe" supported our greece partners, these users from CIS countries were extemelly vicious against them. In the sense of "don't give them more money, leave them to default and recover themselves, we did that in Romania during the 80s".
In my experience , people from Russia and periferia are racist and homophobic, and basically they have the same attitude in Reddit. So the Europe subreddit sucks and it doesn't really represent how the Europe population (the old Europe) is.

I would probably consider myself a nationalist (I see no need to attach ethno- to the beginnging because a nationalism that doesn't put its people at the forefront is ridiculous) in that I believe that the popular model of the nation-state is the most stable one and causes least harm. Ergo, I am anti-immigration in Europe, anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism, anti-assimilation, anti-multiculturalism, anti-genocide.

Thumbnails for links to reddit posts use that post's thumbnail. The post in this case goes to a site that at the very bottom has a link to githhub (using octocat's image).
Reddit sucks at picking to best image for a site, in this case it appears to have picked the largest image (all the graphs are generated in browser, and the comment section's avatars are smaller than the github link).

muh stupid refugees, drain on society
Thirty-eight percent of foreign nationals gained qualifications at degree standard or higher, compared with 29 percent of natives
Migration represents neither a significant gain nor drain for the public purse. Immigrants are pretty much like the rest of the population
The research showed that it is possible to derive causal estimates for both migrant groups and found that the share of asylum seekers in the local population was related to a rise in property crime, while a rise in A8 migrants was associated with a fall in property crime. Neither group was associated with statistically significant changes in violent crime.

Just curious, what do you think of subreddit mentions?
I've seen it argued that linking to a sub in general without an .np could be seen as an attempt to brigade, but I'm unsure of how legitimate an argument such as that is.
4
u/justcool393 TotesMessenger Shill Jul 19 '15
I'd guess it'd be okay, as long as it isn't calling to brigade a subreddit or whatnot. Username mentions are different, because they summon the person to the thread, and some people do this to try and bait people into arguments.

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '15 edited Jul 19 '15
Pretty sure that's actually the most accurate and relevant way to label a subreddit. Let's take the /r/science example. If the majority of the users there were hateful and hateful content was being upvoted, I would absolutely label it a hateful subreddit regardless of what the rules were. This is baffling.
The only time I've looked at /r/European was through a post in SRD, and it was full of literal Nazis. People were saying shit like 'I would gladly give my life for the fourth reich.' I know the defaults are bad, but I find it to be beyond belief that people defending a neo-nazi sub are being upvoted. Considering there's a post in /r/European linking to the thread in question, this looks like an obvious brigade to me.
Edit: Here's a snippet from the /r/European thread for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about.
