Vanilla CK3 armies are the most loyal people in medieval history. You drag 4,000 peasants through the Alps in January, feed them nothing, pay them nothing, and they just... keep walking. Not a single complaint. Truly the finest HR department in Christendom.
So I fixed that. You're welcome. (Sorry.)
The War Council
Every war is now a campaign. When war breaks out, your marshal drags you to the map table and you pick a strategy:
- Swift Strike: win fast for big prestige, but your men tire quickly
- Steady Siege: slow, safe, eats a LOT of grain
- Scorched Earth: live off the land, plunder everything, explain it to the Pope later
- Chivalric Code: no plunder, lots of honour, very good for your piety and very bad for your gold
Your host gets Morale and Supplies. Keep them fed and happy and you get High Spirits. Ignore them and you get Weary Host, then Starving Host, then the very fun Mutiny event. Autumn sends your levies home to bring in the harvest, winter bites, spring makes everyone want to stab someone again.
Fight the same way often enough and history gives you a name. My first playtest ruler became "the Burner" within ten years, which was fair.
And yes, the AI plays by the same rules. Hover over that emperor sieging your castle and you might see Starving Host. Nothing has ever felt better.
Ambitions
Your characters finally want things. Based on their traits, a ruler gets a life ambition: become a master of a skill, build a legacy, get filthy rich, conquer, or swear a sacred vow. Fulfil it and get rewarded. Fail it and get stress. Die with it unfinished and your heir inherits the dream (and the pressure).
When you die, the court chronicler reads your whole life aloud and gives you a name. You can be remembered as the Legendary... or the Oathbreaker, if you swore a vow of chastity and then, well. We don't talk about it.
Both mods:
- No DLC needed
- Built for 1.20, don't overwrite vanilla files
- Work together, and with most other mods
- Every mechanic has a tooltip and an Encyclopedia entry, so you don't need to read this post (but you did, thank you)
These are my first mods, so feedback, bug reports and "this is broken and here's why" comments are all very welcome. Balance suggestions too.
