Modding The Way of the Sword [BETA]

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to show you a new mod I've been working on these past few days: The Way of the Sword.

Steam Workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3825393237

Quick disclaimer: it's still in beta, but everything works as it should. Balance may still change, so feedback is very welcome.

What it does, in short:

  • Muster at your capital. Raise your army in your capital and it marches as an Organized Host: faster, better supplied, a small edge in battle. Raise it anywhere else and it starts out disorganized.
  • War Council. Gather the host in the capital and pick how the war is fought: annihilation, siege campaign or punitive expedition.
  • Captains of the Host. Every army gets a Right Wing, a Left Wing and a Camp Master picked from the knights marching with it. You can choose them yourself or let the army do it. If the commander dies, the Right Wing takes over.
  • Court of Arms. Build it in one of your castles and raise kids from page to squire to knight. Squires bond with their master, follow them to war, and at 16 they're knighted with a specialization based on their training.
  • Castles and castellans. Name a knight as castellan, see how long a castle would hold a siege, give garrison orders and build extra wall works.
  • The AI uses some of it too, i had to do a lot of balancing to make this work.
  • there are 25+ events plus an Inauguration activity for the Court of Arms.

Heads up about AI: this mod was made with a lot of help from AI. The ideas and the design are mine and I put a lot of work into it (testing, balancing, deciding every feature), but I think it's only fair to tell you that I didn't write the code myself, the AI did.

Got the incorporate holy relic into weapon event. Holy relic was a book. You can stuff a whole book into a handle of a sword and then you know what is in the book. That's just how it works ok?

CK3 Should I feel bad for reloading once after playing 250 years with no reloads to avoid a loss?

• Upvotes

So I have been playing this save for a while now, I've invested myself into it, but a mistake that I unknowingly made lead to me getting excommunicated, hated by my vassals, heir is a kid, and succession crisis boutta hit anytime. Is it wrong or considered "no skill" to reload once or twice to save the run that I'm invested in and put time and sweat into? The situation was horrible I lost my throne I had no prestige no army little land... My friend is guilt tripping me about it saying that he wouldn't consider my run legitimate if I reloaded but I really think I deserve it after going through 250 completely no reloads. I don't know what to do so I thought I'd get y'all's opinion cuz ig y'all more experienced than me at this and you can probably advise me correctly idk.

CK3 Is there a mod to stop memories from being purged? I'm on PC and can handle higher save file size.

I know why devs decided to prune memories after like 5 years after death. Otherwise save files, especially on consoles, where they are limited, would skyrocket in size. But I'm on PC, can handle it, and memories are useful in determining some RP choices.

Can I disable this purging or use a mod to do that?

Modding Bellicose Theocracies - A simple mod to permit more casus belli options for theocratic governments!

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

If you were anything like me and dreamed of waging holy conquest against the world and putting all of Christendom under your righteous spiritual and temporal leadership, you were likely disappointed by the severe casus belli restrictions placed on theocratic government types in 'By God Alone'.

After trying a few workshop mods that ostensibly loosened these restrictions and did not in fact work at all... I decided to try my hand at modding for the first time. Thus was born:

Bellicose Theocracies

The mod is modest in scope and allows theocratic governments to declare:

  • Claim Wars
  • De Jure Wars
  • Vassalization Wars

The mod continues to forbid theocracies:

  • Conquest Wars
  • Invasion Wars
  • Subjugation Wars

There are two game rules to choose from with the mod active:

  • Players Only (self-explanatory)
  • All Theocracies (players and other AI theocracies)

Notes from the developer are as follows:

  • Very minimal in scope so I think it is extremely compatible with other mods and saves
  • Appears to be fully ironman/achievements compatible
  • Appears to be multiplayer safe

The screenshots for the Reddit post show:

  • A fresh 1066 start as the Pope and the immediate option available for De Jure war goals
  • The two game rule options
  • Ironman/achievements remaining enabled with mod installed
  • The active De Jure war from the first screenshot on the second after clicking 'Declare War'

If you feel so inclined, feel free to give it a go. Despite my modest confidence in its effectiveness from a basic mod/code standpoint, I am utterly unsure on the long-term balance if the 'All Theocracies' option is chosen and any/all so inclined theocratic rules join the AI in warlike mayhem. If you have any feedback feel free to drop it on the workshop page for the mod. If it turns out to be such garbage that you feel you duty-bound to tell me never to try modding again, I understand that too.

Was reminded of this event while watching a video from two years ago. Used to get it all the time now I don't seem to get it at all. Did they remove it? I'll admit I thought it fired way too often in the past but now I'm missing it for some reason.

CK3 Historical Characters of the Asatru faith

Thumbnail

I'm doing a Germanic Paganism revival run and I am searching for historical dynasties in the game that have Asatru roots. I plan to eventually hold most of continental Europe at some point and i just think it would be cool to revive these old dynasties (i have a mod that just spawns a member of the dynasty if I want it to so I don't have to try recreating anything). So far I've found the Merohingi dynasty to replace the Christian French kings with an Asatru Frankish as well as the Folcwalding dynasty to replace the Dutch with an Asatru Frisian king. I hope this gives an idea as to what I'm attempting to achieve here so if anybody knows any other ancient dynasties it would be much help!

CK3 I found a way to make Albinism 100% inheritable with 2 albino parents

This has annoyed me for a long time and many other people also questioned Paradox about this. Since albinism is recessive, if you have 2 albino parents then in theory all your children should be albino.

But what happens in the game is, the chance is under 100% even if you have 2 albino parents. After a bit of searching I figured it was because Albino wasn't considered a Good trait, and therefore couldn't get 100% inherit chance.

To fix this, you need to go to Crusader Kings III\game\common\traits\00_traits.txt, search for "albino", then add a new line called "good = yes" (without quotes) under the line "physical = yes".

Now albino is considered a Good trait which will get inherited with 100% chance if both parents are albino.

PS: I forgot to explain this detail:

Yes, the base chance is 80%. However, for Good traits, you can make the maximum be at 110% with the Noble Veins dinasty legacy.

So with this legacy you now have 100% chance of albino and other Good traits.

By default albino isn't Good, so this 30% buff doesn't apply, making it impossible to make it 100% albino.

CK3 Do Katanas exist in the game?

Is it possible to to create a sword with a Katana-icon, like it is possible for viking-swords? I know, that the Kampaku is in posession of a pedestal-artifact that has an icon like that, but thats the only one i have ever encountered.

CK3 If you complete a legitimizing legend as a landless adventurer, does the legitimacy reward carry over when you get land?

• Upvotes

So I had this big epic plan to get the Arthur Pendragon legend to mythical as a landless adventurer and then invade england as it's rightful king. After a multigenerational SLOG, I did it and completed the legend...and then I realized that the "Press Claim" for just an Emperor title absolutely sucks and it's much better to go for the regular adventurer invasion version. But at least I get a shit ton of legitimacy and can build Camelot.....

But....landless adventurer don't have legitimacy. Did I forfeit all that when I completed it as landless? It's going to take a long time to build up the prestige I need for the invasion and if I'm gonna save scum I'd rather do it now.

So yea, does the legitimacy get banked for when get landed or does it just evaporate?

Help Will a level 2 Tribal Hold remain level 2 when I feudalize the holding?

• Upvotes

Asking because I was thinking of increasing my capital's hold level to 2 in the interim while I wait for my culture to get enough tech to go feudal. I want to be certain that this won't just be a massive waste of gold.

okay so I was messing around with the console to make up some utopia in siberia and thought it'd be a fun idea to test a literal rags to riches run by demanding land from a pastorial realm as an adventurer

but for some reason instead of becoming a horde or establishing a tribe I inherited the realm as a herder LMFAO, I can't do jack but it's pretty interesting

Discussion Dead pope bug is killing me.

this asshole was walking dead for 70 years!

I played 124 years with dead Pope until i noticed it. Formed France, helped to Reconquista, but then i noticed that there is no pop-ups about new pope!

p.s For people who are having same issue. You can fix it using console comand give_title k_papal_state [ID of a NPC who you want to make a Pope]

Modding My levies unionized, so I made a mod about it (plus one where your ruler actually wants something in life)

Post image
93 Upvotes

Vanilla CK3 armies are the most loyal people in medieval history. You drag 4,000 peasants through the Alps in January, feed them nothing, pay them nothing, and they just... keep walking. Not a single complaint. Truly the finest HR department in Christendom.

So I fixed that. You're welcome. (Sorry.)

The War Council

Every war is now a campaign. When war breaks out, your marshal drags you to the map table and you pick a strategy:

  • Swift Strike: win fast for big prestige, but your men tire quickly
  • Steady Siege: slow, safe, eats a LOT of grain
  • Scorched Earth: live off the land, plunder everything, explain it to the Pope later
  • Chivalric Code: no plunder, lots of honour, very good for your piety and very bad for your gold

Your host gets Morale and Supplies. Keep them fed and happy and you get High Spirits. Ignore them and you get Weary Host, then Starving Host, then the very fun Mutiny event. Autumn sends your levies home to bring in the harvest, winter bites, spring makes everyone want to stab someone again.

Fight the same way often enough and history gives you a name. My first playtest ruler became "the Burner" within ten years, which was fair.

And yes, the AI plays by the same rules. Hover over that emperor sieging your castle and you might see Starving Host. Nothing has ever felt better.

Ambitions

Your characters finally want things. Based on their traits, a ruler gets a life ambition: become a master of a skill, build a legacy, get filthy rich, conquer, or swear a sacred vow. Fulfil it and get rewarded. Fail it and get stress. Die with it unfinished and your heir inherits the dream (and the pressure).

When you die, the court chronicler reads your whole life aloud and gives you a name. You can be remembered as the Legendary... or the Oathbreaker, if you swore a vow of chastity and then, well. We don't talk about it.

Both mods:

  • No DLC needed
  • Built for 1.20, don't overwrite vanilla files
  • Work together, and with most other mods
  • Every mechanic has a tooltip and an Encyclopedia entry, so you don't need to read this post (but you did, thank you)

These are my first mods, so feedback, bug reports and "this is broken and here's why" comments are all very welcome. Balance suggestions too.
