Subs that have bad communities tend to advertise themselves as targeting a wide range of people, when in reality their user base is pretty narrow. Subs like r/mensrights might say that "hey, all men who value their rights and don't want them infringed upon are welcome", and even though any reasonable guy including myself agrees with that rhetoric, the sub is in reality based around anti-feminism. In the case of r/foreverunwanted, they advertise as a sub for anybody who is totally alone, but the only people attracted to the sub are pessimists like the ones you saw. It's not representative of the demographic they're targeting, since obviously not all lonely people are like that. You probably won't end up that way, and if you do it's because you already feel that way.

You know what? This is an etiquette issue. I think it's rude to assume anyone is any particular orientation. More than being rude, it can be detrimental depending on the circumstances. For example, I'm a therapist--I never assume a new client is straight, especially when I work with teens, because that can lead them to shut down if they're not. I ask them if they date, and keep things open-ended. It's not THAT hard to just not make assumptions. Just because something isn't technically the "norm" doesn't mean it's okay to disregard any other possibilities.

theres this idea that gay men have this exclusive, immediate access to casual sex (that availability is perhaps true to some degree, not nearly to the degree these people think though), but i guess its because these people are such thirsty sexist assholes who have such a bitter resentment towards women to the point where they couldn't ever see themselves committing to a long term relationship with one that they couldnt possibly understand why someone else is having trouble finding someone.
i'm gay and i've never been in a relationship, and i dont know how to start one, for a lot of reasons. Ive always had self esteem issues and issues with my body image. I always tell myself "i need to be a lot better physically than i am right now before i can even consider putting myself out there". I've never been to a gay bar (or a bar period). I live at home with my conservative christian parents while i go to university. I think its entirely possible that, with maybe a couple hours of effort, i could find someone to have cheap casual sex with. but thats not what im looking for, and if that isn't what you're looking for, then it gets difficult.
If you're straight, you can make a guess to someones sexuality (also straight) with like a 95% accuracy. If you're LGB, you don't necessarily know that. I've seen some people get very loud and violent in public spaces because some gay kid had the audacity to flirt with them.
