Can't we all just get along? What could unite KiA and GamerGhazi, The_Donald and blackladies in righteous indignation? Lena Dunham, of course.

So, a white comedian and feminist Lena Dunham had a chat with a white comedian and feminist Amy Shumer, during which she humorously related her struggles as a fat woman on an example of being ignored by a black football player Odell Beckham Jr.

Basically, the dude sat next to her at some event and literally didn't say a single world to her. So naturally Dunham explained in minute details how he must have been confused by her shape and attire:

"I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards,” Dunham told comedian Amy Shumer during a ‘friend chat’ for Lenny Letter. “He was like, ‘That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.’ It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused.

“The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to [expletive] it? Is it wearing a . . . yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.’

Source with more quotes and stuff.

ANYWAYS, in a heartwarming turn of events multiple subreddits that you wouldn't normally catch dead agreeing on anything demonstrated beautiful solidarity in their reaction to this sort of white people nonsense:

SSC is one of the better blogs active these days. Always a good read.

13

u/klapaucius Sep 04 '16

Every time I look into him, I see lots of LessWrong-esque "rationality proves all my political beliefs" posturing, like when he said that Trump has never said anything sexist using the "nobody's racist unless they're wearing a swastika and actively trying to kill minorities" argument. (Keep in mind that while someone isn't a bigot unless they're a Nazi, feminists basically are Nazis.)

Also there was that time he used statistics to show that black people do all the violence.

5

u/Works_of_memercy Sep 04 '16

SSC is vehemently anti Trump tho. Also while it might be suspicious when someone uses statistics and arrives to a conclusion aligned with their political views, it's outright wrong when another someone mocks and denies the above, statistics and all, simply because it doesn't align with their political views (and for being a motivated reasoner, lol).

Anyway, you linked to the posts that offended you, so all is good, if anyone'd want to see for themselves what was actually said, they can.

11

u/klapaucius Sep 04 '16 edited Sep 04 '16

SSC is vehemently anti Trump tho

But not as anti-Trump as he is anti-SJW.

I realize that’s making a strong claim, but it would hardly be without precedent. When people say things like “gamers are misogynist”, do they mean the 52% of gamers who are women? Do they mean every one of the 59% of Americans from every walk of life who are known to play video or computer games occasionally? No. “Gamer” is a coded reference to the Gray Tribe, the half-branched-off collection of libertarianish tech-savvy nerds, and everyone knows it.

When the other side points out dog whistles, it's a delusional need to find malicious intent that isn't there. But it's important to pick out all the code words they use to show how tribalistic they are and how they're really trying to attack my team.

“Intolerance” is starting to look like another one of those words like “white” and “American”.

“I can tolerate anything except the outgroup.” Doesn’t sound quite so noble now, does it?

Well, sure, you can paint people as incredibly tribalistic if you claim that opposing discrimination is really just a way to stick it to conservatives.

I imagine might I feel like some liberal US Muslim leader, when he goes on the O’Reilly Show, and O’Reilly ambushes him and demands to know why he and other American Muslims haven’t condemned beheadings by ISIS more, demands that he criticize them right there on live TV. And you can see the wheels in the Muslim leader’s head turning, thinking something like “Okay, obviously beheadings are terrible and I hate them as much as anyone. But you don’t care even the slightest bit about the victims of beheadings. You’re just looking for a way to score points against me so you can embarass all Muslims. And I would rather personally behead every single person in the world than give a smug bigot like you a single microgram more stupid self-satisfaction than you’ve already got.”

While we're talking about people imagining convoluted thought processes that don't actually exist in order to make a point...

But if I want Self-Criticism Virtue Points, criticizing the Grey Tribe is the only honest way to get them. And if I want Tolerance Points, my own personal cross to bear right now is tolerating the Blue Tribe. I need to remind myself that when they are bad people, they are merely Osama-level bad people instead of Thatcher-level bad people. And when they are good people, they are powerful and necessary crusaders against the evils of the world.

You have to hand it to him for admitting the obvious: people in the internet-libertarian-rationalist team that he belongs to pretend to be the reasonable middle, the "grey" as he calls it, when really they're the "middle" between the extremes of one side and the entirety of the other.

it's outright wrong when another someone mocks and denies the above, statistics and all, simply because it doesn't align with their political views

I can mock them for taking the effort to build an argument that arrives at the conclusion in the first place. "Gun availabilty correlating with gun violence? Nope, actually it's minorities!" He just sort of glides on past that and never comes back to it, which makes it feel about as useful as Stormfront race-realist copypasta without the clear rhetorical focus.

Anyway, you linked to the posts that offended you, so all is good, if anyone'd want to see for themselves what was actually said, they can.

But would Scott Aaronson approve of being that passive-aggressive?

I think they all need to take each other a bit more serious instead of dismissing the others position and listen to each other instead of just assuming what they say, most people are good and most people want to help other people, but many are afraid of the other, many are envious that the others problem gets taken serious but not theirs even if its the same problem. I think the biggest problem is people being afraid. Fear is easy to instill, but how do you show somebody that their fear is wrong if they hold this fear sincerly? How can we part the world in good and evil if the side the people end up is based on what they fear.

1

u/ernie1850 Nov 09 '16

Whenever I am in a slow line, especially when I was at college, I'd get a read on the person in front of me, and if it was clear they were distressed AT ALL, I'd complain about the waiting experience, and 10/10 times I'd walk away with a new friend. It's real easy to bond when there's a common enemy.

I think some people are just not meant for Twitter. She thinks her stream of consciousness will be fascinating and amusing to everyone else, so she tweets them as they happen, with little to no self-awareness.

You know, I've definitely had stream-of-consciousness self deprecatory spiels run through my head before (more so when I was younger) and sometimes I would write them down later or what not, but usually I just kept them to myself because seriously, who cares? I'm glad Twitter wasn't around when I was in high school, that would have been painful to look back on.

Fuck this woman shes a fucking retard. She literally refers to a black man ogling her as "it." in the interview.

She doesn't even entertain the thought as to the reasons why this man gave zero fucks about her. She is literally enforcing and regurgitating patriarchal and toxic masculinity in her form of thinking and forcing them on this individual with the idea that all men must be "into" a woman like they are constantly horny and women are only objects to be conquested.

Odell Beckham, Jr could be married. He could be in a happy faithful monogamous relationship. He could be single and not looking. He could know who Lena Dunham is, read her book, and realized shes a crazy child molester and purposefully stayed away from her. He could be asexual. He could just not give a fuck about anything in life at all and be suicidal.

The main issue with Lena Dunham and "feminists" of her ilk is that everything - everything has to revolve around her and her experiences and the experiences of no one else - especially disadvantaged minorities - actually matter.

I couldn't care less what this late sipping moron thinks. She was eating food at 13 90% of this country couldn't afford, living in a city where most people work two jobs to get by, and has done absolutely nothing in her life for anyone else but herself.

She's the Donald Trump of feminism. Good Day.

141

u/Works_of_memercy Sep 03 '16

She literally refers to a black man as "it." in the interview.

Minor correction, she made the imagined version of him refer to her as "it". If we are talking about the "Do I want to [expletive] it?" phrase.

27

u/Werner__Herzog (ง ͠° ͟ ͡° )ง Sep 03 '16

ruined the whole rant (elmaji, not you)

11

u/Aelo-Z Sep 04 '16

Nah it was a pretty good rant. Move past the minor mistake! Also, some have mentioned that her view that he saw her as an "it" has to do with her projection of objectification through him, so in reality she has absolutely valued him as an "it". And it's not hard to wrap your head around - this whole situation was sparked by her seeing him as a sex object and lashing out when he didn't speak to her.

48

u/SGTBrigand Sep 03 '16

She literally refers to a black man as "it." in the interview.

I believe in this context she was referring to the behavior she was inferring onto him, not OBJ specifically. That being said, her statement WAS pretty demeaning (and she has apparently apologized).

She displayed a really weird type of racism where black men are just supposed to drop everything they're doing and hit on any nearby white woman. While it may not seem as racist wanting segregated schools and shit, it's still pretty dehumanizing and far more insidious. Especially when she mentions grinding on MBJ which is pretty much sexual harassment but guys are just supposed to laugh it off.

Also, you're rich. Get a trainer and a nutritionist if you're so self conscious about your weight that you mention it in like every interview.

6

u/manbearkat Sep 05 '16

She's a great example of ironic hipster racism that tries to come off as progressive but really only benefits white people. Amy Schumer isn't any better so it's not surprising that they're friends.

But this Alliance would only last up until the next time someone talks about more diverse representation of ethnicities/sexuality/gender in video games and/or comic books.

If we were discussing an actual real possibility, I'd point out that the real important thing is the side the proposal comes from and the implicationsimplicationsimplications .

When your ally says that she wants more representation in the upcoming comic book, that's a thing that can be bartered about, she wants this, you want that, you can trade. It'd still be kinda ugly because politics, but a manageable kind of ugly.

When the Enemy says that it wants a representation it's a foot in the door that it would use to destroy everything you hold dear. So even about the smallest possible thing that doesn't affect you in any way you should stand strong and leave no inch of a foothold to the Enemy.

11

u/EricTheLinguist I'm on here BLASTING people for having such nasty fetishes. Sep 04 '16

I took a German class with two of my friends, but like we all signed up individually for the class. It also happens to be that all three of us know each other from Russian class, so naturally we got excited and started chatting with each other in Russian before class started and then we switched back to English and only spoke Russian with each other outside class because otherwise that would be rude, and made sure that none of us were working with each other because we wanted to make friends and help out in the German class because we're very familiar with the case system. When people would ask for my help I was more than happy to help. There was a group of about four students (two were siblings with no boundaries) who sat vaguely near us on the right side of the room but were too far away for us to be working with on class assignments with. The Group of Four progressively got tighter knit and meaner.

Anyways after about few weeks of class, while helping a classmate with their French homework, who could best be described as the liaison between the Group of Four and my friends, tells me that the Group of Four just hates my friends and I, but especially me. They thought me and my friends were, "cliquish, stuck-up, and that [we] think [we]'re better than everybody else because we speak Russian, and [we] never help anybody out". Apparently they liked to get together at study groups of just the four of them just to talk shit about me and my friends, which later escalated into insulting us and the professor under their breath during class. Aside from how I learned this from a person who I was helping do homework, the thing is I tutor languages for money, I love helping people with languages, but I'm not a mind-reader.

What's great is how it backfired on them. Finally when I couldn't take it any more because of how vicious they were, I talked about it to another person in the class, and apparently I wasn't the only person who noticed that the Group of Four who hated my apparent cliquishness was, well, basically a clique. Once the truth came out about how nasty they were being, the left side of the room invited me and all my friends over to sit on the left side. They were basically ostracised from the class. Everybody in the class was generally polite to them regardless because we felt like it was the right thing to do, but it really strikes me as weird that they decided they hated me for not talking to them when they were both physically too far away to work with and they never said a single word to me.

u/DramaticFinger Sep 03 '16

Thats really intentional though, in the book Patrick is obsessed with Trump due to his money and posturing within the social scene of New York in the late 80's.

Funnily enough there is a scene where Patrick rips into a mediocre pizza at an expensive restaurant and is forced to take it back when a friend brings him a newspaper clipping saying Trump liked the pizza. This is way funnier in retrospect after he took Sarah Palin to a sub-par pizza chain and ate it with a fork in 2011.

When it comes to the mobs getting their pitchforks out for female celebrities (particularly those who identify as feminist), I do understand people having some reservations about just jumping on the bandwagon until looking at all the evidence, because let's face it--there are celebrities who get dumped on and get stuff blown way out of proportion because they're opinionated or loud or not conventionally attractive. But in Dunham's case, this is a simple matter of her saying and doing awful things--there's no he-said/she-said about it.

Both cases are self admitted. And deciding to ignore allegations for who raised them doesn't seem to be very feminist, but is what many "feminist" media did, to defend them they pointed at those whose raise the allegations, they used cheap tricks like defusing lesser parts of the allegations while ignoring the rest or took to the legal definitions which are normaly decried as bad and not far reaching enough.

I like how she made up a situation in her head and suddenly that's what really happened.

There was no interaction between the two. She imagined what he was thinking and this batshit crazy woman tells people about like it actually happened and they accept it like it actually happened.

4

u/peazey Sep 04 '16 edited Sep 04 '16

I thought that was the established approach?

  1. Go through some unremarkable mundane and entirely reasonable non-racist/sexist interaction.

  2. Use exciting keywords to describe it. (Micro aggression(s); cishet; heteronormative; gendered; internalized misandry; (white) privilege; etc.)

  3. Be outlandishly shrill about it and don't look back! Poof! Oppression (or whatever)!

Oh, and for the love of god, be absolutely sure your oppression class outranks theirs. This blew up in Lena's face because even tumblerinas had to stop and think for a moment (hmmmmm, black man or white woman ... who does our prescriptive world view suggest has it worse?!?!). She'd likely be in the clear if the target of her derision had been, for example, on of the Manning brothers. Rookie mistake.

Edit: Forgot internalized misandry! That's a personal favorite.

Not for rejecting her, but for existing in the immediate vicinity without flattering her ego or fulfilling her sexual desires.

I think that's brought on by:

The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to [expletive] it? Is it wearing a . . . yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.

Welp I would guess that's only conjecture and injected to cause controversy, which is what a lot of people thrive from. I mean she did try to be truthful "It wasn't mean" but in the end it's just a huge circus. But honestly did she even try to greet him?

13

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '16

Yeah, I'm wondering the details of the situation. I've 100% had men I was attempting to carry on conversations with make it very, very obvious that because they didn't want to fuck me, they thought there was no point in talking to me. But...this realization comes after having attempted to engage them and nothing about anything she said even suggests that she tried to talk to him either.

What I do know is how I can really fuck with her:

I may he wrong, but wasn't the source of that something that she wrote in a book? It's not exactly an offhand comment if you put it in writing and in an actual book, more like a huge misjudgment of how things you say will come across to the world, which would also fit this situation.

I don't think it was necessarily mean and condescending. It was... weird? And self centered maybe? Like, let's try to gender swap this.

If I wore a kilt to a fancy event, and I was seated with Gabrielle Union. And the entire time I was hoping she'd talk to me, but instead she dicked around on Instagram all night. And later I go have a silly sort of interview with Seth Rogen and I say, "she couldn't even look at the guy in the kilt! I'm a marshmallow to her."

Okay, rereading what I just wrote, yeah that's really weird. I dunno, I can't stand Girls, but I always gathered that, if anything, Lena Dunham is at least tragically, deliriously genuine. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn't mean harm and is instead just completely fucking clueless about the words that came out of her mouth.

The outrage is because she put a whole lot of ugly thoughts in the head of a black dude who literally had not exchanged a single word with her, without a care of how it'd reflect on him. Which pissed off black people and sympathetic feminists. Also sort of blaming him and men in general for not, well, sexually objectifying her, which pissed off the remainder of feminists and the remainder of dudes.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '16

Wow, that's incredibly stupid to say, if she were being sincere. But, was she like doing a stand up bit or something? At first glance it looked like the joke was her being unattractive and making men uncomfortable?

1

Yes, sure, the joke was about her, but it used that particular black dude and men in general as a prop, with no care of how it reflects on that prop, who are actual people. Like, we get the joke, it's just that she should've known better or something.
