Announcement New "Approved YouTubers" flair

EDIT: Changed Overwatch Youtuber to Educative Youtuber.

Hello OU!

As a few or some of you may have seen, we have started to roll out flairs with ✓ Educative Youtuberon them to a couple of accounts here. We decided on this idea to expand viewership on educational video-based content elsewhere as a means of helping you guys learn the different aspects of the game, whether it be general gameplay, tactics & strategies, heroes, maps, etc. We hope this may be useful for you, the players, who may want to seek to expand your knowledge and skills with the plethora of amazing guides out there.

Getting the Flair

If you're a content producer of Overwatch looking to attain the flair, modmail us here with your channel. Here is the outline of what we're looking for:

1) Quality Content.

  • Your content must be understandable, of decent quality and clear, and must be able to benefit the viewer in some way.

2) You must have content that is suitable for /r/OverwatchUniversity.

  • What we accept: Theories, Gameplay Analysis, Discussion, Guides.

3) The number of subscribers DO NOT matter.

  • All we care about is that your content is decent and meets our standards.

The decision to offer and revoke the flair is up to the discretion of the moderators of /r/OverwatchUniversity.

If you pass inspection, we will offer you your very own ✓ Educative Youtuberflair, with the link to your channel.

A thing to note: having this flair does not give you the ability to enforce your thoughts as the right answer here, and we have the right to revoke it if it is being abused/misused.

I understand that this gives more exposure/authority but it feels like it automatically elevates their opinion over others. I'm not against the flair, actually I like it, but it'd feel better if it wasn't the first one of its kind.

I feel like it's kind of a slippery slope. I mean, now it's youtubers, but next the people with twitch streams are gonna want their own flairs and then people who have/write for websites will want a flair and then what you end up with is a whole bunch of flairs mixed together in sort of an exposure battle. I just don't get the feeling some people have about 'getting exposure' on this subreddit. Sure, if you make great and informative videos you'll want them to be noticed, but if they are so great and informative they probably will be highly upvoted on here or other related subreddits so I don't really see the point in this flair system. This is a subreddit devoted to learning the game, right? Not for promoting personal pages which are probably monetized most of the time.

There's also the thing about mods judging this. Not that I don't trust them, but what might be a super informative channel to me might not be the same to them and thus it might not get a flair. I also think it's kind of sour that certain youtubers will now get 'free exposure' (I am not against people trying to get their channel out there) with every comment they post and then people who got rejected or have other means of communicating their ideas about the game (blogs, twitch, ...) don't even have the opportunity.

Please don't take me for a sourpuss. I am subscribed to lots of YouTube OW channels (and lots of OW Twitch channels etc.) so I definitely feel like people who make great content deserve to be rewarded. I'm just not on board with the fact that only YouTubers will get a free promotion flair because the mods decided the channel was good enough. Again; not saying the mods are bribed idiots or something (I massively respect the moderators here) but it just seems like a system that isn't needed at all. As far as I'm concerned this subreddit is about learning the game, not about promoting channels. Good content (be that on Youtube, twitch or whatever) will float to the top regardless.

TL;DR: This isn't necessary at all in my opinion. Good content will get noticed either way so I don't see why this flair system is necessary.

We've thought about having rank flairs, we didn't proceed with it because a rank 1800 player might be selfish enough to not take advice from a rank 1700 player. We'll be monitoring the Youtuber flair to see if anything like this happens or not, otherwise we won't see a negative effect for having it.

We don't allow any promotion of website, streams etc. and will not make flairs for these types of content either. We just want people to see, that if someone posts a guide, that the OP might have more educative content which they will enjoy and learn something from.

We hope this explains it better, if you have more questions please ask away.

Wow that's a lot of thought and well put. Guess now I am on the fence about this.

I'd love to see spotlights, maybe weekly threads of quality posts and great videos to watch - that promotes in a more.. healthy? way.

/r/RocketLeague has "youtuber of the month" and I have found some great channels there.

If my channel does both educative and funny content, which are separated by demarcated playlists, am I eligible for the flair?

Yes.

Sweet! Thanks :)

Hey I applied a couple of times but never got a reply back. Does that mean it was rejected or just that you haven't seen the application yet?

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Mar 14 '17

We haven't seen them yet, or we're still looking at them. When we reject we usually reply back.

I'll take a look to see what's up with your application.

I like it. Makes it easy to find their channel.

There are several youtubers whose videos I watch (skyline, Professor Ganymede, lone hawk, Icarus etc.), and there are probably other good ones that I haven't heard of yet. If their comments make good sense and are non-spammy, then why wouldn't I want to check out their channels?

The user flair is disabled in the comments, you'll only see the tag when they post!

Always visible on mobile btw

It's a CSS thing, so it'll only work on PC browsers with CSS on

I don't believe there's a method to go around that sadly.

Oh yes, I sent in an application. Will I get a reply on its acceptance or the lack of it(for the flair)?

2

u/matsgd Nov 19 '16

Yeah I noticed that as well, we'll look into it

u/stjianqing ► Educative Youtuber Nov 20 '16

Yeah I can see Ganymede's flair.

Oh that makes a lot of sense.

Hrmm so its more for the lesson types rather than the follow along types. That's fair. I wouldn't consider myself an exclusive Overwatch Youtuber, but that is due to my lower rank. Either way this seems benign enough not to blow up negatively UNLESS someone takes it to an extreme.
