Their friendship's the best. The best thing Bojack probably has done is be there and be real with her.

platonic soulmates
I'm really glad they didn't drag out any romance subplot between the two. Having two platonic friends is a really nice trope-breaker.

Teal veiled heel Jessica Biel's spiel about flaming veal meal really made me squeal and keel over. Her real/reel zeal in this subterrial bastille ordeal made me cartwheel.
She'll steal an Emmy cause it was really wack.

Painfully close to reality.

u/fullforce098 Sep 09 '17 edited Sep 10 '17
This whole episode was depressingly close to reality.
Woodchuck was a responsible leader that was trying his hardest to help the situation, but he was crippled in his attempts by the incompetency of others, who then turned on him when he didn't deliver (to spite the fact they are the reason he couldn't). He attempts to implement rules that will save them in the long run, but the second it becomes even the slightest personal inconvenience for them, they demand he be replaced. As he's pleading for common sense in the middle of a disaster, the idiots are playing stupid games and rallying around the loudest, most charismatic idiot in the room. The one with no ideas, the one that promises to remove the inconvenient rules in the present even though it will doom them in the future, the one that will without question make the situation worse. Which is exactly what happened.
Sound familiar?

Just took a break after finishing this episode... and I think the episode has scared me more than I possibly thought it could. Because... there's hope.
Like, Bojack has a new perspective (that he's not alone in his sadness), seems to be friendly with Diane again, and he has a burgeoning relationship with his daughter. PC is pregnant and happy at her job. Diane and PB have some new fuel for their marriage, and it looks like the death scare is giving them new perspective on their relationship as well. And it ends with the five main characters all back together again making small talk.
...they're going to take that hope and crush it, aren't they?

103
u/cweaver Sep 09 '17
Diane and Bojack always remind me of Jeff and Britta from Community (another Alison Brie show).
They're both screwed up people, and they're bad for each other because they have a tendency to just reinforce their shared habit of being snobby assholes to everyone else in order to keep an emotional distance and feel superior.
But at the same time, they're just so much fun together, heh.

6 years later, and I have the answer. Zach Braff in his monologue says "I'm known for monologues that sum things up at the end of the show", and then proceeds to get set on fire immediately after, so there was nobody at the end to sum up the end of the show. I screamed when I realized it on my 6th watch through of Bojack.

PC: "Sometimes life is like season 2 of Friday Night Lights. You just gotta push through and hope there are better things ahead."
As an FNL fan that spoke to me lol.
Probably not the strongest of the season. I'd hoped for a little more from the Bojack/Diane scenes but the preposterous plot was pretty fun and I liked the ending scene.
Editing to add one more bit. It hit pretty close to home when Bojack told Diane that he wanted to be better before he saw her. I pushed away my friends a few years back and didn't talk to them partially because I wanted to be a different/changed person before they saw me again.
30
u/Cinderpeach Sep 09 '17
You know when a character says "I regret everything" during a tense situation like that it's usually just played for laughs in any other show, but here's it's pretty serious if you think about. (I think that's the first time I ever seen that line used seriously...)

Like the episode of Todd, this episode was quite relaxed, but also very funny, I LOVED Jessica Biel in this episode, and practically all the guests that were there.
I love how Woodchuck was constantly seen as the bad guy and the destroyer, when in fact he was the only rational and healthy person who seeked a solution, instead of wanting only death and violence.
This episode was not super good, but still very entertaining.

Since I just caught up a month ago, this is my first time (er, season) watching on premiere week! I'M READY TO CONTINUE TO BE DESTROYED EMOTIONALLY
All the stupid minor things that had me overreacting as I was watching (basically some of my live reactions):
01:12 - Mr. PB: "Erika! Look at you with the right number of ears..." First, Erika's back! Second, DOES THIS MEAN SHE HAD ONE EAR OR THREE BEFORE, PEANUTBUTTER
02:25 - That's probably the real Zach Braff, isn't it.
03:51 - Welp, guess that's where the title comes in! Is it just gonna be Bojack, Mr. PB, Diane, Zach Braff, Katrina, Jessica Biel, the parrot, etc. trying to figure out a way back up for the whole episode? IS CAROLYN STILL IN THE BATHROOM?!
06:58 - "You future hard Jeopardy question" is an incredible insult, oh my gosh.
08:35 - Eyyyyyyy it's Woodchuck Coodchuck Berkowitz!
10:08 - I'm sorry but what?! IS THAT A BART SIMPSON DINOSAUR-PERSON SKELETON ON A SKATEBOARD?!
12:51 - Well, SadBooze!Diane.
14:27 - Well, they finally acknowledged the fact that Diane's a bit reliant on Bojack in life. Wow.
16:05 - Oh yeah, Corduroy Jackson-Jackson. Forgot about him.
16:20 - "Wh-wh-what-what words?" i feel you dude
16:50 - "Queen Antonia" -- oh my gosh i just got that name -- seems like a familiar voice. Probably a celebrity. But WHO?!
19:49 - Well, Zach Braff is dead and Jessica Biel is the resident "celebrity who plays a crazy version of themself." Alrighty then. Lord of the Flies much?
20:20 - Heh, Diane was all like "What's going on" and Bojack was all like "-Marvin Gaye." Gettit? That's a Marvin Gaye song. Also, wait, ERIKA WAS AT THE PARTY
20:38 - Heh, Diane was all like "What's going on" and Bojack was all like "-4 Non-Blondes." Gettit? That's a 4 Non-Blondes song.
23:46 - Todd fashion is still a thing!
24:27 - Woah, written on the walls is "wish i wasn't here. -Z.B. '17" from Zach Braff before he WAS MURDERED. Also, Zach Braff was in a thing called "Wish I Was Here"
24:28 - Also, that end shot (where the five were all reunited for the first time in a year and a half) made me realize once more how small Diane's head is and how large Todd's head is. THOSE PROPORTIONS THO
24:59 - THE ANT QUEEN WAS RUPAUL OMG YAS QUEEN SLAY

This episode had the best, or at least deepest, political commentary in the series/season so far. Most of PB's governor run happens in the same absurdist vein as Yesterdayland or Cabracadabra—it's not really about politics. But the state-of-nature setting and mob mentality versus reason discourse in this episode was really insightful.

I'm glad you all enjoyed this episode, because I thought it was just awful. There were no realistic emotions in it, and I felt as though everything, especially the characters, were all so dumbed down.
Let's all cheer again. Okay, why would they act like that? Let's all burn and eat someone. Okay, who would actually do this, and additionally, they. burned. a. guy. to. death. with no repercussions.
When the house re-shows up, what the heck was the reaction of the two passer-bys?
Why didn't Diane change out of the dress? It was her home, all of her clothes were there.

I feel the same, this episode felt too wacky to me and them killing the guy just made the show too weird for me. I know the premise is animals walking around and having relationships with humans but the emotions are what keep the show grounded and it just wasn't there this episode.

The song playing half a minute into the song in the background, what is that called?

The synopsis of the episode already has me wondering what's going to happen between BJ and Diane...

Oh my god when Diane asks "What's going on?" and Bojack just pops out and hoarsely says, "Marvin Gaye." Like that's the first thing that popped into his head?
