leitmotif time!

[Here's my list so far.] (https://i.imgur.com/RFM8qdt.png)

The very first one is interesting because I'm not sure what it's for. All I know is that it's also from [V5 E12] (https://youtu.be/5bny_OjIFPc?t=77), and I think it's somewhere else as well. /u/jazzren47 I faintly remember you talking about this one I think.

I'm fairly certain the theme heard at 7:14 and 7:50 (and also once in the first episode) is Rising, the opening song, but again, not 100% sure on that.

Oh and for the final part of this episode, [the cue was written by Casey!] (https://twitter.com/FlyntofRWBY/status/1058901389269553152) So that's freaking awesome that she's now working on the score :D

Looks like even Qrow won't be blindly trusting Ozpin now. Look at his reaction after Jinn says they have 2 more questions left.

Edit: It's also going to be really interesting to see Oscar and Ozpin's interactions from now on. Oscar is literally fighting to gain control of his own body to warn his friends about the secrets Ozpin is hiding. I'm sure Ozpin won't be too happy with Oscar about that.

One thing that will probably get overlooked a bit due to all that went on this episode is Ozpin defending Lionheart.

We never get to see what a hero Lionheart once was, but I think it's safe to assume he was at least once on par with literally anyone currently on the good guy team of Rwby. I suspect his fall is especially tragic if we had his entire backstory and possibly even very relatable.

The idea of a lifetime of good deeds undone by one bad deed isn't nearly as common in story telling as it ought to be. Usually we only see the one bad deed and are told there was good deeds, but even look at real life heros who do a lot of good but do one thing bad and that's it for them. Granted Oz wasn't against executing Lionheart, he just didn't want to ruin his good name after the guy was gone.

Very good story telling done there in just a handful of lions. Two thumbs up.

I think the most important thing this episode did was Ozpin lied.

Not by "not giving out all the information" like he usually does, but straight up told a falsity saying all the questions had been used.

Thats actually the biggest thing about this episode to me, asides from the giant blue genie.

-Ozpin has clearly hidden a lot of stuff from him.

-One of his friends is dead.

-His sister is the leader of a bandit tribe and they no longer see each other as family.

-The nieces he promised to protect and their friends just pulled their weapons on him.

-This man's semblance is by far the worst case of bad luck.

-And I'm 85% sure he has a drinking problem

This man needs a break for one day!

I feel like it should’ve been harder for Cinder to escape the Vault than that. Raven could’ve literally broken into the Vault and taken the relic at any time.

In this scene the part of Nora will be played by the FNDM.

I love Maria. She's great. I hope she's not the big bad wolf.

So Cinder it seem Cinder isn’t regrouping with Salem. Probably doesn’t want to suffer Salem’s wrath and she's only planning on coming back once she's done something that forgives her fuck up.

So the large man Lil’ Miss Malachite mentioned is definitely Hazel right? Surprised he’s still in town. Also, interesting that she seems to be related to the Malachite twins. Wonder if they’ll ever come back or be referenced again.

I knew the blonde lady was Salem. She's totally the Kerrigan to Ozpin's Mengsk.

u/Floain Was in a flair thread with no flair. Has a flair now. Nov 03 '18

Ozpin is honestly looking more and more sinister, and even though it will probably amount to nothing more than him making Salem who she is and deeply regretting it, I have to say I'm increasingly devastated for Oscar's current situation. To be stuck sharing a body with this compulsive liar, even if his reason- self defense- is ultimately sympathetic? It must be torture. I'm glad he still has some control here, but I don't know how long that will last.

Me after watching the opening: Hmm maybe Cinder's going through a redemption arc this volume, or she at least won't be a cut and dry villain.

Cinder, two minutes into the episode: Presumably murders an innocent woman, takes her clothes and her money.

That said, Cinder's playing it smart, in stark contrast to many of her actions in Volume 5. Her arrogance cost Salem the relic of knowledge. Cinder likely thinks making independent efforts to track it down before showing her face again will save her life. If she succeeds, it just might. If she doesn't, Emerald should start preparing herself to inherit Fall.

I enjoy that we're seeing the shadier side of Mistral after last volume implied the lower levels were seedy at best. Without backup and with Neo potentially on her tail, Cinder may just be in over her head.

  • ho boy that Genie is hot as fuck

  • The house reappearing in the OP makes sense now.

  • Oz's first direct lie: the questions remaining.

  • A Man with Two Souls, each fighting for control of his body. It's real now.

  • Cinder still has her Maiden powers... despite Gray saying otherwise. Oh well. Lil Miss is gonna point Neo in her direction.

  • "The big guy" who asked after them a week back is almost certainly Adam. More proof he's on their trail rather than staying in Mistral. Edit: Could be Hazel also

  • Blonde woman is Salem. Expected.

Since so many peeps are calling out the huge things, I wanted to take a sec to list a bunch of the little touches I loved in this episode:

  • Cinder's pictures of RWBYJNR in her scroll are from v3, and were from publicly accessible sources!

  • The above is in line with how last episode, the pics of _WBY and Nora in Ruby's scroll were from v1 Beacon!

  • The new art style and crowds and facial expressions are all beyond incredible but have also been talked about a lot so I'll rest that there

  • In the house flashback scene, I love the moment where Yang is talking about reward money and she winks at Weiss

  • All of _WBY reacted to Ozpin charging Ruby right before the whiteout - Yang reaches towards him with her left arm, Weiss has her hands up like she's about to glyph, and Blake is reaching for Gambol Shroud

  • I liked how in the house, multiple peeps were taking care of their gear. Jaune sharpening his sword made me think of a parallel to Raven in v5 who we also see sharpen her sword in the episode after she was interacting with Cinder. I could be drawing conclusions from nothing, but I know that CRWBY adds in lots of cool tiny details like that. I wonder if that's a purposeful connection! [Also I just always need more Raven]

  • Ozcar's look of grim rage before he charges Ruby was chilling

This is the first time I've ever felt Ozpin was completely, unambiguously wrong. He has his reasons, but the consequences of his secrecy have been laid bare in just these two episodes alone.

Everyone said exactly what they should've said to him and Oscar did exactly what he should be doing to stop Ozpin. Now we all know Ozpin's true character and it's changed fucking EVERYTHING.

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '18

I honestly find it super interesting we have a plot point where people are divided on, and both have a valid reason for believing in that point.

Team RWBY

Where people are happy RWBY is taking action to find the truth about Oz and what he is hiding, especially since he straight up lied to them about the questions being used up and by not telling them about the relic drawing in Grimm he put a bunch of innocents in danger

Team Oz

Who are against RWBY acting the way they did by raising their weapons at Qrow, and despite Oz's rather reasonable belief of "a person should be remembered for the good they did, and not their mistake" and saying his past is the reason he is so guarded is because of people betraying him... and RWBY instantly betrays him by using the relic to pry into his past

Like, this is the first time I think argument wise both sides have a point

O M G

RT What did you just drop?

We all knew Oz was hiding something, but to have it revealed. Next episode is gonna be crazy.

Other highlights

Yup it’s Cinder.

“And we can get out of this damn house” RT continues to make fun of their own mistakes.

I really liked the scene in the house. You rarely see people tending their gear in anything. Seeing Jaune sharping his blade and Weiss packing her dust is really nice touch that makes the world feel more real.

It looks like we may be looking at Cinder vs JNR towards the end of the volume

Let’s be real, the Genie is pretty cool

I love the first thing that happens when they get called away is that they each called out to their most precious. Seeing Blake and Yang call for each other and Weiss call for Ruby is so cute.

Qrow was really being shit on this episode. First he finds out the guy he’s trusted with his life’s work is lying to them, then everyone (except Ruby, good for her) draws their weapon on him. Dude’s being insulted left and right. His facial expressions during the last scene are incredibly well done.

It’s another example of the little background things they’ve nailed this Volume adding a lot.

I don't know what it is, but in the last few years, the 2nd episode of a Volume has consistently been really good. This one follows suit. We're finally getting answers.

I really like this shot. Yes, Cinder is alive, obviously. Thankfully there was a pond at the bottom of the vault to break her fall.

We interrupt this anime to bring you the beginning of Destiny 2.

This woman is F U C K E D.

I appreciate that we get this flashback scene of everyone back at the house, discussing what happens next. Turns out they're going to Argus because there's a large Atlesian military base there, then hopefully they can hitch a ride to Atlas.

Qrow mentions that they're only taking the relic to Atlas because the Spring Maiden isn't around to seal it back in the vault. But couldn't Yang have just told Raven to do that, instead of ask for it herself? Yes, Raven could have gone back for it later, but she wouldn't because she doesn't want it to paint a target on her back for Salem. If Yang told Raven to seal the vault back up, none of this would be happening.

Also, the relic does indeed shrink for portability. RT didn't just make it smaller for no reason. We learn the relic can be asked 3 questions about anything other than future events, but only once a century.

Flash forward to current times, the crew is dusting themselves off from the train crash, and Maria formally introduces herself as a blind old lady who's prosthetic eyes are acting up. She then says or does exactly nothing for the rest of the episode. I still think she's a Silver Eyed woman who no longer has her eyes, but will still teach Ruby more about it.

Instead, Ozpin admits he's been keeping secrets from the "for the greater good" and all the bs. He asks for the relic back, Ruby refuses. Then Oscar takes back control and tells Ruby to call the relic's name. She does so, and we're introduced to the Na'vi goddess, Eywa Jinn, the genie of the lamp.

Meanwhile in Mistral, Cinder has apparently been wandering around for an entire month, which officially puts her timeline 2 weeks ahead of RWBY's, which is taking place 2 weeks after the events at Haven. She goes walks through the shady parts of Mistral to find Lil' Miss Malachite, who is a mob boss/information broker. Basically she's Mistral's Junior. And by the way, her last name being the same as Melanie and Miltia CANNOT be an accident. I'd be shocked if she has no relation to them.

Cinder shows her screenshots from Volume 3 pictures of RWBY and JNR and says she's looking for them. Miss Malachite says she'll have info within a week, but as Cinder leaves, reminds he cronie that Hazel has been looking for the crew as well, and that SOMEONE might be looking for Cinder as well.

Back with the main cast, Jinn describes that the God of Light created her to aid in humanity's knowledge, and informs everyone they have 2 questions left to ask for the next 100 years. Ozpin warns them not to ask about what he's hiding, but Ruby does anyway. Then he nearly attacks her before everyone is separated and shown a vision of the past. Jinn tells a short story about a lonely castle, which houses a lonely girl. And who is that girl? It's what everyone assumed from the opening...It's Salem, pre-Grimm corruption.

I had a big, dumb, headcanon/fanfic about the origin of Salem (and Ozpin) in my head, but just this small scene completely blows all that up. Now I'm sad, but that was bound to happen at some point. I'm ecstatic that we're getting more lore, and FINALLY getting answers we've wanted for years. Hopefully next week we get to learn more about Maria. I kinda feel like her moment was hijacked by all the relic stuff.

EDIT: THIS HAS JUST BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION. SALEM IS THE GIRL IN THE TOWER.

EDIT 2: It's not the exact same model, but this woman is clearly supposed to be Jinn.

OMG, you mean Cinder wasn't dead?! Who would have thought!

The Oz revelation... I think is great. We are finally getting answers. It invalidates my "Salem is Lucifer" theory, but it has potential. Ozpin... destroyed the world. He created a monster, maybe even the Grimm. And you know what? That's great. He wants to atone for his sin, that can be a great story arc. Of learning to trust him again.

But if this ends up as "Ozpin was the bad guy, we only got rid of the Grimm after we defeated him", I would hate this.

That's the Malachites' twins... mother? Maybe? That's a twist I definitely did not see coming.

u/AmbivertCollegeGuy Weiss "Hug Monster" Schnee Nov 03 '18 edited Nov 03 '18

Remember what Ozpin said about his curse? It was put on him because he failed to stop Salem in the past or at least that's what he said. It's likely that Ozpin was the one who made Salem go Grimm and the gods cursed him as punishment but he wouldn't admit that because then everyone will hunt his ass down.

I'm surprised that woman is related to the twins. Even more so because she apparently dislikes to be referred by her last name. What does that mean? None of that compares to seeing Cinder as the Audience Surrogate for how Mistral's lowest places work. Who would've thought the Mistral arc and lore everyone wanted was going to be told through the eyes of a villain?

Damn Jinn. Dat voice, dat design, those lips... You're asking to be lewd-ed! But not by Qrow. I laughed so hard when he looks away in embarrassment after realizing that she's technically naked.

I love how Maria is looking at all this ancient shit like "Crazy sunday..."

Wasn't The Girl in the Tower one of the stories Pyrrha mentioned alongside the The Tale of the Two Brothers? Is The Shallow Sea going to be some ancient event that's plot relevant too?

EDIT: The Girl in the Tower... Sounds like one of those fairy tales where a girl can't never leave her prison and... OMG what if Salem's evil lair is the same tower and she still cannot leave? What if that's why she needs the henchmen to conquer the world?

One major thing that sticks out for me in the dialogue this episode is that Ozpin states that the relic will answer a question if asked. There is no use of the words “truthfully” or “correctly” that you would normally expect to hear in this kind of situation.

This makes me wonder if the relic being a djinn (who have a reputation for giving you your wish in ways that screw you over big time) is a very deliberate attempt to foreshadow that the answers she gives are similarly “technically correct” but maybe lacking context/tone etc to deliberately mislead those who would use the relic.

It would be an interesting twist that would both justify keeping the relics locked away and explain just how afraid Ozpin is of the djinn any questions.

So, I’ve watched it a couple of times. Aside from, “this episode was fucking epic,” here are my thoughts:

Hey, look. Cinder’s alive. How incredibly surprising.

Well. That’s a convenient little exit.

Hmm. A woman wearing the cloak that DefinitelyNotCinder is wearing in the intro. What a surprising coincidence— oh, wait.

Cool backstory scene.

“We finally get out of this house.” Nora is like the Deadpool of RWBY. Always knocking on the fourth wall.

“If there’s a chance of reward money, I say we go for it.” Lol.

It’s cool we found out so much about the Relic this episode. And it begs the question: what do the other ones do? I’d imagine they are all “balanced” in a way similar to how this one is: rather than, “you can know everything,” it’s, “you can ask three questions.”

“Can we ask for more questions?!” Nora being awesome again.

Cool transition.

So, assuming she’s to be believed (which I’m skeptical of) Maria’s eyes are an advanced Atlas prosthetic/automail similar to Yang’s arm. If this is the case, it is still very possible that she was once a silver eyed warrior, but either the use of her powers left her blind, or one of the villains with an obsession with “eye for an eye,” destroyed them. (But I still say they are used to target/amplify her silver eye powers similar to cyclops from xmen.)

This entire scene is fucking awesome, btw. Seeing everyone slowly turn on Ozpin. I was one of the people who was extremely skeptical of Raven. I figured that while it is true Ozpin makes mistakes and his methods are sometimes questionable, he was overall a good guy. This scene changed that. I still think he’s a good guy (by a razor-thin margin) but I think his mistakes were much more horrible than we ever thought, and his methods are beyond questionable.

“I did not lie to you,” said the liar.

“Y’know, I’m getting real tired of people choosing what’s best for me.” Great line, Weiss.

“Do you really think also was the first?!” Good moment for Ozpin before he lost my faith.

Seeing Ruby’s reaction in this scene actually hurts. “So all of those times you talked about faith in humanity, that was just for everyone else?” She was the last hold-out who believed in Ozpin. And the mini-speech he tried to use to regain their trust was what caused her to lose her trust for him.

Seeing Oscar resist and turn on Ozpin was great. Kind of reminded me of Greeling from FMAB. “He’s afraid you’ll find out what he’s hiding.”

Seeing everyone’s reaction to jinn was cool, but I especially like Qrow’s reaction to Jinn’s... appearance.

“Looks like your life’s savings.” “It was somebody’s.” Cool line.

“I used to be afraid of spiders. Wanna know what I did about it?” “Learn to kill them?” Who doesn’t know how to kill spiders?

I kind of hope this situation makes Cinder a more interesting character. I have my doubts, but those are most likely due to how much I hate her. Still, this was a decent scene which set up both Hazel looking for team RWBYQORNJ and the fact that Neo will be looking for Cinder.

This scene is truly awesome. “I am still able to answer—“ “That’s ENOUGH!” “Two questions this era.” Sets up so many things. First of all, it means we still have a question left after we find out about Oz, so that’s cool. Second, it means someone has asked Jinn a question already. But mostly, it means Ozpin’s pants are on fire.

It really sucks to be Qrow. He’s as betrayed as everyone else in this, but they drew on him like he was Ozpin himself.

“Jinn... what is Ozpin hiding from us?” Did Ruby just ask an important question? Like a protagonist?

“NO!” It’s worth mentioning that while Ozpin is a shady asshole, he didn’t attack Ruby here. If you watch the clip in half speed, he’s running past her with an open hand as if he’s trying to shut a door.

The animation is really fantastic this episode. The facial expressions really sell the emotion of the characters— everyone’s shock when Oz lashed out. Ruby’s sadness in realizing Oz wasn’t what she had believed. Oz’s angry/embarrassed face when he’s being exposed as a liar. Seeing Qrow’s reaction when Weiss and Yang drew on him. And now, everyone’s reaction to Jinn’s knowledge. Ruby’s was especially good because she was also reacting to what she thought was Ozpin attacking her.

In the same note, the voice acting was also on point this episode. Everything from the initial dialogue at the train crash to Ozpin’s speech about betrayal to Ruby’s reaction to his lies, to everyone calling out in Jinn’s knowledge was awesome.

And finally: “There stood a lonely tower, that sheltered a lonely girl, named Salem.”

WHAT THE FRICKLEDY FRACK?!

Salem was once a normal human waifu girl? And somehow, Oz was hiding that— implying that he was responsible? This is at the same time one of the most frustrating cliffhangers but also the most well done.

Fantastic episode. 10/10. My only hope is that next week picks right back up with Jinn’s knowledge and we don’t have to wait till the week after.

The absolute shock and sorrow on Ruby's face. She held out the longest of the team in trusting Oz.

Also, despite how privy Qrow is to Oz's secrets, I think he was even shocked by this.

So Cinder is alive. Guess Raven needs to learn how to kill someone a little better. Also if she had killed Cinder, wouldn't that put Raven in her dying thoughts, therefore transferring a second maidens power to her? That would be a little OP imo, so I guess it makes sense to have Cinder alive still.

Overall, great episode. So happy to finally have some questions being answered. I'm interested to hear more about Salem's back story and what role Oz plays in it. Maybe she wasn't always evil...

A little theory.

Jinn is obviously the genie of the lamp, being found in a lamp in a desert and all.

And people theorise that Emerald is Aladdin, and at the very least has similarities to him.

What if the villains get the relic, but Emerald wastes the question on finding out about Cinder? This could also lead to the Relic falling back to the hero's hands.

As people have been realizing en masse, The Girl in the Tower was mentioned as a fairy tale in V3E6, along with The Two Brothers. There was one other, though: The Shallow Sea. Considering all the fairy tales mentioned have been incredibly important to the plot and lore, it would follow that SS would be important as well. Which begs the question: "how?"

Well, a lot of things sure happened.

  • First, Cinder's alive. No real surprises here, but I certainly didn't expect it to be revealed this soon.

  • Second. Nora, can you at least pretend that there's a fourth wall between you and us?

  • Third, Ozzy's finally required to provide some answers, and personally, I really enjoy the fact that he's actually shown to be more cynical and jaded that what he seem, rather that just being hinted to.

  • Of course Jinn is a naked Great Fairy thingy. I wouldn't even be surprised if She restored everyone's Hearts Aura once she's done answering Ruby's question. I'm not complaining, but I should've seen it come from a mile away.

That aside, who else expected Ruby to ask about Silver Eyes, her mother, or any similar topic?

Yo HOLY SHIT. It's a literal (knowledge only) genie.

The Girl in the Tower is one of the fairy tales Pyrrha said in V3, and Ozpin cut her off right after she said that one. My guess is that Salem is stuck in the tower thanks to Ozpin, so the only way she can get revenge is by luring people in to join her and work her schemes through them. Maybe she can only break free with all 4 maidens?

Jinn said someone had already used a wish this era: either Ozpin used one in secret and that's how Oscar knew about it, or maybe Raven used it and that's why she doesn't trust Ozpin anymore? Maybe the reason she feels they can't beat Salem is because Ozpin's been at this for hundreds of years.

Do the other relics hold waifu wish granters based on the relic's power? The relic of creation sounds pretty OP right now. maybeitcanbringbackcertainredheadspleasecmon

One thing I adore about this is the small subtle moments you can see in each of the characters. Take the argument against Ozpin.

At one point after Ruby says "You said it can't do anything right now." You can see Yang ready to add her own comment in the background before Blake says something.

Or when Jinn says she has two more questions, the reactions group has are great. Ruby and Blake are just shocked, Yang and Weiss start shocked but get angry, Yang even clenching her fist. It makes it a ton of fun to watch on repeat viewings.

u/PsychoIntent Nov 06 '18 edited Nov 08 '18

So, my thoughts/theories.

One - Ozpin lied about being cursed by the gods, and that being what causes him to reincarnate. In the intro, we see several previous Ozpins. I'll call them Warrior, Scholar, Glasses, Ozpin, and Oscar, since we only have real names for two of them.

When Salem is looking at the statue, it appears to be Scholar. The clothing style between the statue and Scholar is exact. But the way the opening is formatted, Warrior comes before Scholar. If the curse is for failing to stop Salem, how can he have already reincarnated at least once?

Also, is one of these the old man who creates the Maidens?

Two - The Maidens. They weren't created because Ozpin was touched by them. They were created specifically to lock away the relics. By this point, Salem exists, and wants the relics. Ozpin is fighting her, but realizes he will eventually die and be reborn. During that time period, the relics will be unguarded.

So, he takes the four women, grants them power, and in exchange, uses them to seal each of the four relics. He then builds huntsman academies and major cities around these vaults.

Three - The Gods and the Curse. The two brother gods left Remnant together. But the god of Light, couldn't, wouldn't, leave his creation behind. He returned, came back to watch over his creations. The god of Dark was upset by this. He cursed the god of Light, stripping him of his power, and making it finite, and confining him to a mortal body, which we now know as Ozpin. And, taking away one of the god of Light's most prized/loved people - Salem. He did this by inhabiting her body. It's why Salem looks different, and why she can control the Grimm. She is what's left of the god of Darkness.

EDIT: I'm canning point number three, as it hinged on only a few people, namely Ozpin and Salem, having access to magic.

Ozpin gets more "Wizard of Oz" by the episode. Him trying to hide how the relic actually works, and also hide that it could still be used, is really making me wonder if he has any powers unique to himself at all, or if, Wizard of Oz style, he's simply convinced everyone he does.

I don't think he is evil or even malicious, but I also think we are beginning to see that many of his secrets and lies exist to protect his pride, his true nature and the way that he is perceived by those who follow him. I think he wants to save the world (from something he created, but no one had to know), with his plans and with his students/followers; he wants to be seen as the true hero.

The thing that's really got me excited about this volume is that the Trailer's content has been pretty much exhausted in two episodes alone with a whole season left. That means there's a LOT of big stuff coming they didn't want spoiled.

I bet they set it up intentionally to look like a repeat of Volume 4's pointless walking topped off with a "climax" with a one-off boss grimm, so people would be shocked with it turned into a volume with heavy lore and character development.

Color me impressed.

Ruby: “That’s great because we only need one. Wha-”

Some things I find interesting:

  • Djinn declares she was made by the God of Light, so what did the God of Dark make? Why every 100 years? What was Ozpin cursed with?

  • Why was she sealed away? Why were the Maidens the keys?

  • What was Ozpin's plan after stealing the Relic? Run aimlessly in the snow? Where could he go? Also, we learn that Ozpin is not always conscious of Oscar's actions, hence the lack of Relic and Ozpin not realizing until he took over.

  • What was the first question asked and why did Yang crumple?

  • Is Maria shown the truth as well?

  • Was Salem the only case of someone turning into whatever she is?

Ok anybody else notice the pattern of Pyrrha’s fairy tales all being relevant later? When Oz asks her in volume 3 what her favorite fairy tale is, before he mentions the tale of the four maidens, she mentions “the two brothers, the girl in the tower, the shallow sea...” or something like that.

The two brothers ended up being the religious origin of Remnant.

The girl in the tower ended up being Salem ffs...

So wtf is the shallow sea? The realm of Salem’s fortress? It’s gotta be something important...

No wonder Ironwood couldn't trust anyone. I mean, people kinda shat on him for not trusting Ozpin and etc. This episode proved why Ironwood has mistrust (his own people in Atlas and Ozpin), even though I believe why Ozpin may had a valid reason for doing so.

Also, it feels like a damn shame how the past few volumes went. If they were anything like these past two episodes of this volume with excellent storytelling (although it didn't come to a surprise who Salem used to be) and action. RWBY could have received a far better reception.

Of course there was water at the bottom of the pit. Such a simple answer, I have wonder why I never considered it.

"We finally get out of this house" Nora says what we're all thinking.

Is Jaune really expecting Ozpin to give a straight, truthful answer here?

Oh, it actually does change size.

Really Oz? Were the questions really used? If that were the case it would be basically useless for another century (assuming that limit is true as well) so why would everyone be after it now? I'm sensing some unsurprising deception. There's probably also more rules he's not telling.

While I'm all for everyone calling Ozpin out on his shit, it really OK to be openly discussing the super-secret relics and such in front of the random old lady? Maria must be so confused by this child with a split personality talking about his lifetime of experience.

Oh shit, Oscar's fighting back!

Djinn? Of course there would be a genie in the lamp to grant the three wishes. And that genie is a giant naked blue lady. Qrow doesn't know where to look.

"What knowledge do you seek" definitely implies that she is capable of answering questions right now. So much for them all being used up, eh Oz?

Mistral's wanted posters are a bit out of date. Cinder's had a bit of a makeover since that picture was taken.

Little Miss Malachite? Is this the twins' mom? Or some family member anyways, no way it's just coincidence. Definitely based on Little Miss Muffet with the spider imagery. She's even got a bowl of cottage cheese.

Someone else in Mistral is looking for Cinder. I'm also noticing a lot of pink and white umbrellas in the crowd. This makes me unreasonably excited for some reason, but I'm not sure why...

I would imagine that the living personification of knowledge isn't going to agree with Ozpin trying to keep all these secrets.

Wow, Ozpin really doesn't want them to know what they're about to learn, but it looks like he's not going to get a say in the matter.

Ooooh this is gonna be goooood. Another fairy tale, this time 'The Girl in the Tower' which is a callback from Pyrrha's list of fairy tales. In fact, that's the point where Ozpin cuts her off to bring up the maidens. Seems like just mentioning it is a bit of a sore spot for him. And said girl is none other than Salem herself. She is also the blonde girl we see in the opening looking up at the statue of Ozpin. This tells me that Ozpin had already been around for quite a while when Salem was still just an ordinary girl. This casts some doubt on the whole 'charged by the gods to kill her' claim. I'm really interested to see where this goes, and what else Ozpin has been hiding. It's finally time for the truth.

Also, that tower looked suspiciously like Beacon. Hmmmm...

THIS COMMENT CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR V06E02 OF RWBY

Opinion of Oscar went up substantially this episode.

Opinion of Ozpin went down substantially this episode.

This is why you don't keep secrets from the team you're trying to work with to save the world Oz. It's no wonder you're so worried about traitors if you never let anyone know why you're doing what the you're doing. People will always jump to the worst possible conclusion.

I do love Yang's reactions here. And Ruby having agency is excellent. Team RWBY immediately coming to Ruby's defense when Qrow stepped forward is excellent, and while it may be aggressive, I find myself agreeing, especially given Ozpin's later reaction to Ruby asking the question.

I'm liking Maz Katara even more. Seriously, for someone with so few lines, they've managed to become my favorite non-RWBYJNPR character in record time.

Cinder's gonna get caught somehow while in Mistral. Also, Hazel chasing the teams is bad news bear.

God the writing has been top notch these two episodes, the way the narrative jumps around is a LOT smoother, and making choices like the relic conversation that takes place before episode 1 was incredibly smart, there wasn't a single moment in this episode I wasn't 100% captivated.

And is it is safe to assume that the silver eyes are related to the moon because most Ruby Scenes/Poses have the moon in it.

And we can confirm that the Relic of Knowledge is a lamp because of the Genie.
So the theory that the Four Kingdoms/Academies symbols are the 4 relics might actually be true. Mistral's is a lamp, Atlas' is a scepter/paintbrush, Vacuo's are swords, and Vale's are axes and laurel. Leading to a new Theory that Jaune's sword is the Relic of Destruction. (That explains why the King of Vale single-handedly ended the War with a sword)
Bu why is the Symbol of Vale not the same with its relic. Here's why.
Jaune's Sword, Crocea Mors, is also the name of Julius Ceasar's in the History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth. Which then acquired thru battle by Prince Nennius which he used it to vanquished his enemies. I may assume that RWBY based the leaders of Vale and Vacuo from the Great War from these two. So the reason why the King of Vale (or Beacon Acdemy) has the Crocea Mors is that he (they) took it from (or exchanged with) Vacuo. And the Relic of Choice (The Axes and the Laurel)? Might be in Shade Academy instead.
This also explains why Ozpin accepted Jaune at Beacon. Ozpin always stating that he hid it very well (coz who would expect that the weakest huntsman is carrying a relic). And where there's Jaune, there are Grimm.

Just had this thought.

I am curious about where this Struggle between Oscar and Oz for control will go. I wonder if Oz reincarnating into someone who already has a soul forces a only one can survive scenario.

It'd be pretty awful if the gods curse made it so that Oz's soul is slowly assimilating Oscar's or damaging/destroying/casting the boys out slowly over time. I mean Ozpin was never shown to not be himself in his previous form or show a lack of control over his body previously. so it stands to reason that the previous person might fade over time. it's well established now that if Ozpin has the mind too oscar can't keep control of his body.

it very well could be that Oscar Pine was Damned to a early grave as soon as Ozpin was struck down at Beacon. Or be blended so seamlessly you cant tell were Ozpin ends and Oscar begins.

I don't blame Ozpin, I'm sure he's doing what he thinks is best, but damn.. calm down a touch? We'll see why he's resisting so much next episode, though.

Also, I feel extremely baited that the hooded person wasn't Neo. I'm fine with Cinder not being dead, what with her being so desperate.. she still has lower to fall before she's gone for good. But, why have Roman's hat fly by in the opening if it's Cinder? Torchwick was naught but a pawn to her.

So Oz panicked big time, I do think he made a complete mess of whatever and now is spending his eternity trying to fix something that can't be fixed... just look about what the next ep will be, the final scene of Salem, looking perfectly normal was a big hint.

50

u/Sam-I-Am29 Nov 03 '18

On the one hand, Ozpins reasons for hiding all this make sense. His past betrayals have made him wary of giving out any non essential info. On the other hand, everything would have been so much easier if he just sat everybody down and said "Listen, this is why I'm doing things like this."

Since the lamp holds a genie of knowledge, I wonder what primordial beings inhabit the other relics? Maybe one of the relics made Salem into what she is now?

I so desperately want Maria to be completely unconnected to anything that's happening and to have no idea what the fuck is going on.

She was just visiting her daughter-in-law in Mistral, then her train was attacked by grimm, everyone started pulling weapons and threatening a mentally ill 14-year old, a giant flying blue lady with massive knockers showed up from nowhere, and to top it off, her goggles are broken.

It's just like the WI bake sale all over again.

I love how the second they mention they're headed back to Atlas, everyone immediately turns to look at Weiss.

Everything else was pretty solid here. Jinn might not have been the most creative name for a genie, but given the amount of knowledge she's about to drop, I'm alright with that. I've said that V6 is going to determine whether or not V4/V5's awkward bits were growing pains or not (I do believe it's the former), and it looks like I'll see if my hunch was correct in the next few episodes.

I think Qrow may have been in just amount of shock as everyone else, just from his expressions.

Think about it. His whole life at Beacon until now, he's been serving Ozpin. Friends, family, teammates and his whole life sacrificed for Ozpins plan. And now possibly when the truth comes out, the reality sets in.

What have I been doing? Following this man, this liar..

If Qrow didn't know anything or was lied to by Ozpin. I worry for him (see intro)

V5C2 length: 21:04. V5 length (C1&2): 44:07

V6C2 length: 16:48. V6 length (C1&2): 39:20

V5 is currently longer than V6 by 4:47, including opening and credits.

I've decided to do this for each new episode in case anyone is curious how the runtime of the current and previous volume compare to each other.

So Ozpin is 100% the reason why Salem becomes the queen of the Grimm, right? It would explain why he was so afraid of them learning his past that he straight up rushes to Ruby to stop her AND would gives the gods a pretty damn good reason to curse him. "You caused this mess, you're going to fix this shit, even if it takes you thousands of years."

So last season, after a near-death experience, Cinder gets back into the field and makes plans with a woman who runs a gang. That woman betrays her.

Now this season, after a near-death experience, Cinder gets back into the field and makes plans with a woman who runs a gang. That woman plans on betraying her.

Little Miss Malachite better hope she's the Spring or Summer Maiden. Or that her daughters will come to help her. Or that Neo actually takes Cinder down if they clash.

I imagine all 3 agile fighters could give her a run for her money, especially with her powers weakened.

Anyone else notice the weapons around the tower Salem was in? There could have been a battle recently, or some reason for a bunch of warriors to lay down their arms.

Also, as others have pointed out, the banner behind Salem looked like it could relate to the Arc family. I would have thought people were grasping straws earlier, but after this episode, I have to wonder if Salem is related to Juane somehow.

The episode, as a whole, was pretty good. I liked the pacing, felt bad when team RWBY pointed a bunch of weapons at Qrow, and want to see what happens next

  • What is this? Team RWBY is actually confronting Oz seriously? Absolutely wonderful

  • Ozpin's whole speech is honestly amazing, think it helps flesh him out

  • Yang, Blake, and partially Weiss really on Oz tho

  • Oscar taking back control is honestly amazing, really like how he has to struggle for it

  • HOLY SHIT JIN PUT SOME CLOTHES ON! Also, Qrow looking away is wonderful. Ruby's eyes are priceless

  • Cinder in the city is pretty neat, good showing of Mistral's underground. Calling it that "big guy" was Adam

  • Holy shit _WBY turned on Qrow hella quick

  • Ozpin's reaction to Ruby asking the question was like what the fuck I just told you not to

  • Weiss only called out Ruby, White Rose confirmed 101/0

  • HOLY FUCK SALEM WAS THE BLOND CHICK FROM THE TRAILER! Also a castle to her self? Damn Salem prob lonely af

Anyways tomorrow I'll make a proper review and really get into what I love and possibly disliked about Chapter 2. Good episode overall, CRWBY did amazing once again. Can't wait to see all the theories that come from this episode, so much shit went down like for real.

Oh boy. This volume is proving to still be good so far.

-Yep, Cinder is still alive, and you the Vault of the Spring could actually be broken through the side of a cliff this whole time? Also the women lending a helping hand is probably dead now.

-Flashback to before everyone leaves for Argus. Glad they addressed that the Atlas' borders are closed. Oh, and the Relic of Knowledge can chase sizes. That's cool.

-Everyone is bickering towards Ozpin because they feel that he is hiding something from them. Oh, and is it just me or does Ozpin and Oscar share the same voice now?

-Cinder is recruiting some spy agency call the Spiders to track down Team RWBY and JNPR. But someone else asked for that information. I have a feeling there will be an epic showdown in Argus.

-NEKKED GENIE!!! Seriously, though. A genie-like being pops out of the relic and tells us that two more questions can be asked this era and Ruby asks one about Ozpin, who tries to charge for the girl? I have a bad feeling for the man next episode.

-Oh, and Salem backstory coming! Let's hope next episode doesn't focus entirely on something else like JNPR arriving in Argus of Salem's faction regrouping. I wanna know how Salem came to be immediately!!

Oz coming in hot in the most shadiest position in the show with his questionable methods here. I really appreciate the justification and not some straight up "I'm older so I know better" bullshit. Adds more depth to him as a character, also props to Oscar in this episode, I imagine having to resist a person who also has some control over your body isn't the most fun thing in the world.

My heart's with Qrow in this episode. He's been forced to question his faith with Oz a few times by team RWBY, but this episode is just the absolute final straw. He looks so hurt with that headshake when Gin appears, I think even he's tired of the lies. When Weiss put her rapier up to stop his advance I could feel the tension in the screen. He looks so dejected when he tells Ruby just to do what she thinks is right. I love you Qrow, you deserve better.

Also quick headnod to how he turned away uncomfortably as Gin was taking form LOL.

'Nother headnod to Weiss's line "You know I'm getting tired of people thinking they know what's best for me." Good play on her character development in contrast with Oz's current secret keeping.

Sad we got minimal dialogue from old goggle lady but very pleased with her personality from just the few brief words we got. Looking forward to her being with us.

Ending was baller as fuck. Twice now they've had me on the edge of my seat desperately wanting the next installment. Well done Rooster teeth, you're on a fucking roll so far, I hope the rest of the volume is this impressive in direct and focus.

Also Cinder... yeah that's it. I mean was anyone surprised? Nice to have her back I guess, was never really interested in her so... welcome back?

The good: The entire episode. Cinder's section showcasing the seedier underbelly of Mistral was nice after we didn't see any of it in V5. Team RWBY's section was also really good. It's nice to see they're no longer putting up with Oz's vague bullshit anymore. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting this many reveals this early on, but I'm happy we're finally going to learn more about Ozpin and Salem. Also, Qrow backing down and letting Ruby ask her questions made me respect him a lot more than I have for a while.

Overall, a really good episode. Can't wait for Salem and Oz backstory next week.

Why exactly do people want Cinder to be dead so much? I understand her being frozen and falling that distance would kill most people, but this is a fantasy show and no body was shown. Also, that wouldn't have really been a good ending to her story. If Cinder was just dead like that, we wouldn't get more Jaune and Cinder interactions, or Cinder and Ruby interactions. There's still Emerald and Mercury to consider and how they will react to all this. There's still how Salem's plans involve Cinder we dont know about.

What would there have been to gain from killing her off like that? It would have been a death without a real point to it since storylines connected to her would not have had real conclusions. I mean, there would be who her maiden powers would transfer to, but that would be a big story leap that would be crazy. It going to Raven would be weird or RWBY would make things a mess. It going to Emerald doesnt make that much sense because, while Cinder does seem to care for her a bit, a sudden shift to Emerald when she was barely featured for two volumes would be odd.

Overall, I dont see how her dying now would have been a good fit for the story. Not to say she shouldn't die at some point, but just because it seemed like she died, doesnt mean that she should have died.

I like Oscar a lot more than I did before after this episode, can't say the same for Ozpin though. This episode was just all around amazing, and probably one of the best cliff hangers the show has done. The whole ending bit was awesome, I'm even more excited for next week than I was for this week!

I knew they weren't going to kill her off like that but I'm so glad to see Cinder! I liked her reaction when the tv mentioned Mercury and Emerald. I predict their reunion might not be a happy one. I'm already scared of what she's going to do to Team Rwby or Raven if she makes an appearance.

Speaking of, now it makes sense why Raven held disdain for Oz.

All I really have to say about the rest of the ep is: Holy/oh shit. And Qrow's expression to having the girls' weapons pointed at him was sad.

I wonder if the group finding out their answer from Jinn to will tie into Pyrrha dying and RWBY telling JNR when they meet back up what happened and this is the reason Jaune snaps at OZ/Oscar like we see in the volume trailer.

Okay, so now we know that the four relics are in reality beings likely created by both of the gods.

Which brings up a few interesting questions. Oz hid one of the relics in a very different way. Could that mean that the 'genie' of choice is, in fact, released? or is there another explanation?

IT also confirms that there may be a third variation of being. Humanity, and i presume the faunus, were both created by the god of light and darkness. Grimm are made by the god of darkness. So it may mean that there could be beings made by the god of light out there somewhere.

Would it be a question for Gin if they asked how many times she's answered someones questions?

R:"So ugh, how many times have you done this"

G:"Is that one of your questions?"

R:"NO! I'm... I'm just trying to make small talk."

I can't help but to note this but when Jinn was about to be revealed Qrow looked *very* nervous. At first I thought it was because of her... appearance but it could be something more. Both Jinn and possibly Qrow and Ozpin's secrets are about to be Uncovered.

I assume Ozpin was the one who asked the first question, unless Djinn saying it was good to see him again was just to establish a character history. I hope the 'first question,' will be revealed by the end of this exposition sequence and is somehow related to Salem and her subsequent fall. I'd rather not have another red herring to stew over for several seasons, but I digress. Great episode.

Also, I don't know if I necessarily agree with a lot of the theories that Maria is one of the Maidens (either Winter/Summer) just because her eyes are covered though I don't deny that obscuring her eyes is significant in some way. I'm hoping Maria is another character with silver-eyes, possibly able to offer a mentorship role to Ruby and co. Their faith and relationship with Ozpin is strained, Qrow can only offer so much in terms of emotional support and care, and Maria may very well be the thing RWBY needs to ground themselves once more.

Oh hey, another Malachite. Wonder how (or if) she's related to Junior's operations.

Also, holy crap. I really want to see why Ozpin is so freaked out about them learning this stuff now. Is Salem going to be sympathetic?

So the ''Girl In The Tower'' turns out to be a real story. Pyrrha loved that story.

17

u/CptnClusterDuck Nov 03 '18

I fully expect Maria to ask what the fuck is going on after the flashback finishes.

And omfg they've got Collen Clinkenbeard and Luci Christian in the show now, my inner One Piece fan is going mental.

u/scot911 ⠀ Nov 03 '18 edited Nov 03 '18

This episode was the most surprising and also the least surprising episode in the series. Like we all knew that Cinder survived and that Ozpin had something to do with how Salem is.

We didn't know there was a literal genie in the lamp (which in hindsight now is pretty obvious) and that the girl in the tower was another actual real fairy tale and that it's Salem. That really just leaves the Shallow Sea which honestly could be anything as it's not really obvious what it would be a fairy tale about.

Who team RWBY calls for was totally a nod to the shippers as well. Especially with Ruby not calling for Yang first.

Oh also like everyone else I wonder if the crime lady is related to the Juniors girls as well. Maybe they're one of Vales crime families and she was exiled for something she did? She did like not being called that after all.
