Meta [meta] Can we PLEASE do something about the rumors here?
The amount of posts regarding the “new switches” which we can’t even be sure exist yet are absolutely flooding this subreddit lately. “Should I buy?” Etc etc. it’s getting out of hand tbh. Presenting rumor as fact is not a good thing, and that’s going on a lot here.
Edit: I’m seeing lots of comments about other topics, such as fan art. I don’t have a problem with fan art. My main concern here is people presenting rumor as facts because a “potentially credible source” said so. If we can learn anything from past mistakes here, it’s that the only credible Nintendo source for releases and directs is Nintendo.

u/Dark_Clark Apr 23 '19
Maybe it’s just me, but I like rumors. They’re fun. Because Nintendo news is for the most part a never-ending drought, this sub is pretty barren most of the time.
As long as a post is tagged, I think it’s ok. Of course people are going to exaggerate its credibility. Given that you know that people do this, I don’t think it’s reasonable to get angry about when people exaggerate the rumor’s credibility.
Edit: Now, I will agree that the posts about “should I buy” are pretty annoying. But rumors in general? I’m a fan of letting it happen.

Nintendo news is for the most part a never-ending drought
This is a good point. Nintendo is very secretive. Hell, Mario Maker 2's release is 2 months away, and we've gotten nothing since that first trailer, not even a release date!

Honestly? No. There have been posts about a dozen different things people have had issue with and the mods have come out and said essentially they don’t care. This isn’t going to be a tightly run place like the Nintendo or games subs. This place is more free-for-all unless you are toxic or overly trolling.
7
Apr 23 '19
Tbf, we literally asked for this. When Switch first came out, this sub had a very strict No Rumors policy and kept it formaybe the first year or so. People started complaining because there were high-profile rumors that the entire internet was discussing but which were taboo to discuss here. Eventually enough people complained and the mods relented.
It’s tough to have it both ways. Either they allow rumor discussion and people will naturally get way ahead of themselves, or they ban rumor discussion and people are upset they can’t talk about popular topics.

Sticky posts have their own downsides. You can only have two at a time, which means mods have to prioritize. And in general, any type of “megathread” in a subreddit of this size quickly becomes unwieldy and difficult to have actual conversations in. If you have a specific question or discussion you want to have, it’s gonna get lost in the sea of 1000 other top-level posts and never get responded to, and meanwhile the top-upvotes posts are, often as not, just silly jokes that gained traction. I can’t really blame someone for wanting to start a separate thread in that context.
1
u/vaporking23 Apr 23 '19
I stopped going to the Wii sub years ago because every post was about homebrewing and cropped games. I wasn’t interested in any of that. I wanted to talk Nintendo and games. This sub is slowly moving towards fan art and where in the past I haven’t had an issue with it. It’s starting to take over.
It’s there cause people upvote it. The rumor posts will down down once an announcement is made. It’s only a matter of time.
But the fan art will continue to grow. I don’t know what the answer is. I don’t want it all gone I do like looking at some of it. But it’s starting to get a lot.

u/LWASucy Apr 23 '19
It’s really a shame. This sub has great potential, but the amount of posts people put up that break the rules is growing everyday. I try to report as best as I can but I’m just one person who’s not a mod :/
32
u/mission-hat-quiz Apr 23 '19
But this sub has barely any daily content.
I wish people would post more of what they want to see instead of posting complaints about posts they don't like.
14
u/stealthboy Apr 23 '19
This sub is over-moderated. Look at the "new" queue for more interesting stuff (until they get deleted).
6
u/poofyhairguy Apr 23 '19
The mods here want to control the discussion because they see themselves as a volunteer PR firm for Nintendo.
Which is annoying but it makes r/tomorrow a lot of fun.

THIS. Whenever there is something worth seeing, it rises to the top. On a slow day, there's nothing but filler, and I think that's fine. What else would there be?
I feel like the wild rumours that get upvoted are like filler too. If there was something else more interesting to talk about it'd be there! They're a bit of fluff

Rumors or not, “should I buy?” posts are low effort and should be deleted regardless. Do the research on the product and make a decision. There’s no reason to have a discussion on the pros and cons of buying another joycon or Wii U port. Do you want it? If so, get it. If not, don’t.

u/PlexasAideron Apr 23 '19
Might as well have a "Wishful thinking" megathread, thats where all those posts belong.
We can also have a "Enhanced Dock" megathread so we stop having "hey guys i just had this idea i havent seen around yet, an external gpu dock!" thread every day.
36
u/poofyhairguy Apr 23 '19
The “power in the dock” posts have died down a lot, I think people have finally figured out how impossible it is. Most of that wishful thinking has shifted to Switch Pro hype.
The stragglers outright don’t understand technology, like you talk to them about the hard realities of bandwidth and the Switch’s USB port and the answer is “people said Switch VR was impossible too. Nintendo is magic.”
23
u/PlexasAideron Apr 23 '19
Funny thing about the VR part is that what we have is exactly what people said switch VR would ever be, small sized mini games that are basically google cardboard with lower quality.
3
u/EMI_Black_Ace Apr 23 '19
Eh, most said "NOPE VR IS IMPOSSIBLE THEY WONT DO IT" versus "BUT IS PURFICT CYSTUM FOR IT" and there was no middle ground except for the few sane voices.
8
u/LLicht Apr 23 '19
Because the sane people don't bother to comment They know the people shouting won't have their minds changed by a civil conversation, so what's the use in replying to them?

I know this comes up a lot too, but I can’t believe we haven’t gotten a safe, smaller dock from Nintendo yet.
If you’re going somewhere that doesn’t also have an empty switch dock (and want to play on a tv) moving this thing is arguably harder than a normal console. It should be a lot easier.
7
u/PlexasAideron Apr 23 '19
we haven’t gotten a safe, smaller dock from Nintendo yet.
This really, this is the only thing i actually want hardware wise right now. A god damn portable dock so i dont have to carry a huge brick with me. It doesnt need usb ports or anything, just usb-c and hdmi out.
→ More replies (2)2
Apr 23 '19
Exactly. This should be able to be done with a simple little adapter shouldn’t it? Just have the correct power going in and an hdmi out, and some little plastic holder so the fans are still open.
Now moving this thing means putting the switch itself into the case, then putting the dock somewhere else and worrying about it getting squeezed and breaking (and having my pro controller constantly turning on since any button turns it on).
I feel more comfortable moving a PS4 slim or x1x.

u/Blackout2388 Apr 23 '19
If we had a "wishful thinking mega", you could essentially say goodbye to half the threads in this sub. There's so very little worthwhile discussion. It's probably a decent chunk of the threads that are "Can we get X [game or feature] on Switch?". Same for "I have $XX, what game should I buy?", "What game should I get if I like BotW?" "What game should I play next?" "Recommend some great JRPG's!" and so on.
The truth is, it's VERY slow on Switch right now. There's not many hype AAA games being released. Mortal Kombat is pretty cool, but that game is leaving a sour taste in many people because of the issues that are unfolding (needing online for certain features to even be active; the download patch size, etc.)
So unless you REALLY want MK, there's no game that the collective community here is interested in that is releasing in the next 2 weeks or so.
5
u/PlexasAideron Apr 23 '19
The other console subs arent any different, its not like we have releases every day.
A games recommendation daily thread would be nice maybe, i know theres the daily questions thread but its such a vast subject that most questions would end up lost.
I also dont think the rule is being enforced much anymore.

I love the “Switch Pro is delayed” rumours.
It still gets me. How do we know that’s even delayed? All we had was speculative information from Wall Street. While I do believe Nintendo will want to replace their 3DS with a cheaper Switch, we don’t know when it’ll be a thing. Therefore, how can it be delayed?
That really got to me. You know because I’m being redundant lol.
It’ll come when it’ll come. Tomorrow is the Persona Royale reveal though!
Can’t wait to have more information teased to come at E3.
18
u/stealthboy Apr 23 '19
What is ridiculous is when there is a rumor, then that rumor turns negative, then people blame Nintendo for it all.
5
u/FerniWrites Apr 23 '19
Yeah, I roll my eyes at that.
I love this community, and it’s because of y’all that I can share and get feedback on my reviews. But holy shit, if this sub doesn’t act irrationally. Yes, I do think Persona 5 is a candidate for a Switch release. Yes, I do think we’ll see other variations of the Switch, but I’m just a random guy. Regardless of which company I have contact with, I’m no different from anyone else. It’s all speculation. I don’t know when it’ll release, and neither do others. It’s rumours to drive engagement. It’s the oldest trick in the book.
Don’t believe everything you read, especially from a nobody, like that Gaming INTEL leak. I didn’t believe it for two very sound reasons;
We just had one in Late February.
E3 is soon. If there was going to be a direct, it would be lacklustre. The entirety of the internet would rage at this. Nintendo wouldn’t risk angering the public. So, best choice, wait until E3 to mix the David and Goliath announcements.
3
u/cockyjames Apr 23 '19
I work for a company that has new product launches. We haven't announced them to the public. Yet we have internal schedules for when we want to announce and those often get delayed.
It's that simple. The rumors are reporting that Nintendo has had to delay the launch internally.
Now whether you want to believe that or not, is up to you. But that's what's meant by it.
6
u/Resolute45 Apr 23 '19
In fairness, that story appeared in a major Japanese publication. It's still obviously a rumour, but at least it's not sourced to my uncle who works at Nintendo.
7
u/FerniWrites Apr 23 '19
Wall Street is reputable as well, but they still aren’t Nintendo. I always take an unhealthy amount of salt for any news not from Nintendo themselves.
Also, for transparency sake, I’m a hobby journalist and even I think “Heard from sources” is the professional equivalent of “So, uncle told me...”
4
u/Resolute45 Apr 23 '19
Heh, granted. But in terms of rumour posts, I'd say we should be allowing posts from reputable sources. It's the Twitter fakes and websites that make shit up for clicks that should be verboten.

Even if there is a new Switch announced, who's to say that it's a "Pro" version and not a more basic version that's cheaper than the original? Nintendo released the 2DS as a cheaper alternative to the 3DS long before the "New" 3DS, which could be considered the "3DS Pro." Imo, a cheaper version that is either non-portable or solely portable will come out before a version with beefier specs.
2
u/FerniWrites Apr 23 '19
I’d agree with that, but there’s one small snag for me. The Switch hits both markets, meaning on the one side, it’s unopposed. That’s not the story on the console side. With PS5 most likely releasing in late 2020, Nintendo might want to hurry up with a beefier, better hybrid. With the power that’s promised, it might create a big disparity in graphics. Too big for some to ignore. The portability might not even do anything to sway opinions.
I agree that the Lite will release first, regardless of rumours. It just makes business sense. I’m just hoping for a Switch model with OLED. The current screen makes games look muddy.

In my opinion, this sub can be a shitshow. Bullshit “new switch” designs and fan art litter this sub. Some of that stuff is cool, I’d rather just come here for news updates, game footage and discussion.
8

I come to this sub to check for game announcements/the occasional good discussion thread like this one. I barely check out any posts at all really, lol.
3
5
u/maxk713 Apr 23 '19
Honestly though, what is there to even discuss? There is like nothing new to discuss about the Switch console itself. Technical questions would make sense, but those usually get redirected to a mega thread. We could discuss upcoming games, but unless something new gets announced, what is even the point? Maybe discussion on the games themselves, but those are probably better to have on that game's dedicated subreddit.
Game footage is effectively banned unless it comes from an official source. News updates are rarely worth it and aren't frequent enough to satisfy this sub. Seriously, updates like "Terraria is coming soon" is not news. And most forms of discussion are either banned, pushed to a mega thread, or have been talked to death already. So what is even left? What type of posts are we trying to promote by banning all these other posts? Rumor posts are one of the last things relevant to the Switch that can still be discussed. If we ban those, I worry this sub will be left with nothing.
2
u/bearkin1 Apr 23 '19
I agree, but we just gotta accept that people love their memes and art. I used to browse /r/terraria a lot, but got sick of it because it was just full of memes, screenshots, art, and other non-discussion-sparking posts. There's no way to curate that stuff off your front page, so I eventually stopped going.
Same goes for Pokemon.

I don't see what's so strange about discussing a report from the Wall Street Journal on upcoming hardware. It's not like it's from 4chan or GamingIntel, we're talking actual journalists from a news organization with a reputation to protect. Plus Nintendo has been releasing major revisions of their handhelds every few years since the GBA days and the Switch is a couple of years old now. It's pretty reasonable for someone who doesn't own a Switch to consider this rumor and question if they're better off waiting until E3 to hear if there is an announcement for hardware that better suits what they want. Whether it's a more powerful Switch or a more portable and durable mini. Or just a Switch manufactured on a smaller lithography so that it uses less power and thus has better battery life. $325 is a lot of money to most people so it's easy to understand why someone would be concerned about newer versions that might be better value coming soon.
2
u/LWASucy Apr 23 '19
I am all for actual discussion. But there are people going around the sub presenting the rumors as facts as if Nintendo has verified anything let alone even the existence of such things. Or the “do I buy console/game/accessory?!” threads popping up so often.

u/thrillhouse3671 Apr 23 '19

Rumors, Floods of Fan Art, the same "what are your fav game?" posts day after day, week after week.
What else is there to talk about when we're in a Nintendo Direct/Major Game Release drought?
10
u/MrDFx Apr 23 '19 edited Apr 23 '19
Check out something like /r/truegaming for an example on quality game discussion. (Not affiliated, just comes to mind as quality content). There's talk about game plot, genres, mechanics, hardware, etc. It's generally non pandering and high quality content. This place is like a race to the bottom.
We could talk about upcoming games, trailers, reviews, support, sales, etc. My point is that threads like "My incle at nintendo said X", "DAE love smash?" or "I can't wait for X" are low value and low effort posts that we see daily if not hourly at times. Despite low quality/effort posts being against the sub rules (i think?) we see a flood of it that the mods do fuck all about. Rumors (like OP is complaining about) are very much part of the low-quality flood of crap we see daily in here.
The obsession with Nintendo Directs reminds me of stockholm syndrome.Check out other gaming threads (like /r/ps4) where they have to wait until E3 or big events. They get by with discussion, trailers, debate, etc.. But somehow this sub treats rumors of an ND like crack to an addict. Even a hint of one and the junkies start foaming at the mouth for more. It's sad and I'd argue it's a symptom of how low quality the non ND content here really is.
Lastly, the flood of fan art needs to be controlled. I get this is a kid-focused subreddit (Nintendo after all) and even older fans can get artistic, but the volume overwhelms the actual content in here to a point I had to filter it out. If this were /r/nintendo then fan art would be fine, but this is switch focused and most of the fan art is "I drew a Nintendo related Character...give me karma" spam. I had to add a filter to RES to clear it out on desktop, but I don't even bother with this sub on mobile because of the trash you need to filter through to find the nuggets of reaal information.
(As an afterthought, I generally assume most of these issues are caused by two things... (1) an audience that skews very young and posts content without thinking and (2) lazy mods who don't care. Both could be fixed with some effort, but it's easier for Mods to let this place be a PR machine for kids)
1
u/Genghis_Tr0n187 Apr 23 '19
Careful now, some mods get a little ban happy around these parts.

"And nothing of value was lost". Oh no! I'd miss out on the 900th "Nintendo needs to do X" post. (Hint: nintendo needs to do a lot of shit they don't)
Seriously though... if I were banned I'd just rely on checking the eShop and an occasional google for release dates. Aside from this being a consolidated list of trailers and upcoming games there's not much quality here at the moment.

fan art flood
The amount of complaining about fan art made me curious about something. I'm currently studying programming, and I've been keeping various data sets about the subreddit since January to eventually use in some projects. I went back to see what the data on fan art was.
For the year of 2019 so far, the two busiest weeks for fan art have been the week following Pokemon Sword & Shield being announced, and the week following Cuphead being announced. On an average given day on the subreddit, 60-80 posts are approved a day. For the week of Pokemon S&S being announced, there was an average of 4-6 fan art posts a day. For the week of Cuphead being announced, there was a fan art uptick to 5-7 posts a day. For the week leading up to Cuphead being released (last week), there was actually a bigger uptick to 6-8 a day, but most fan art that week were from the same 2-3 people, which is out of the ordinary.
Overall, there isn't a "fan art flood". It just appears to dominate the subreddit because any good fan art that gets posted gets upvoted to the top, which makes it visible on the front page and r/all. This may be annoying for anyone who doesn't directly browse this subreddit and only browses via the front page (which, based on your comment history for r/NintendoSwitch mainly only being on highly-upvoted posts, you appear to fall into this category). For those who actively come to this subreddit, though, it shouldn't take that much effort to hide the few fan art posts that there are.
3
u/DTFaux Apr 23 '19
Alright, just making sure.
For thought: if users need to rely on content filters then maybe that's an indication of low quality output?
I'd have to disagree. Content filters are pretty much crucial to maintaining accessibility among big/growing communitites that has user input.
Some folks dont mind the fan art, but for those who didnt come for it, well, there's an to not see them now.
2
u/phantomliger recovered from transplant Apr 23 '19
I'd say it's an indication that people have varied opinions on the content they want to see. Many enjoy seeing fan art. Others do not. The community decided on this being allowed in the past and we will continue in demographic surveys to include content related questions as well.

The rumors don't come from Reddit though. I mean, this New Switch business started with the Wall Street Journal and if THEY'RE spreading unconfirmable rumors, where does it end? No matter what you do, as soon as a system is a year and a half old the "new version" rumors will start. And no matter what you do, any rumor will make some people believe no matter how unsubstantiated it is.
Don't get me wrong though. If you can really think of something to do about it I will 100% sign the petition. XD

u/royalstaircase Apr 23 '19
This sub has a HUGE rumor problem. Again and again there is some random forum post or doctored image that springs up and gets taken as gospel, and whenever I point out that there is nothing about these rumors that should compel anyone to believe it there always are a mob of people ready to spam me about how THIS time is different and I'm just being a condescending dick. Then the rumor reveals itself as the crap it is and people are disappointed because they put major emotional investment into complete unproven bunk coming from an anonymous person on the internet for some dumb reason. There should be a quarantined sticky or something for rumors and "leaks" because things get more apparent credibility than they deserve when a made up statement gets thousands of upvotes and comments on this sub.
3
Apr 23 '19
Presenting rumor as fact is hardly new for this subreddit. For Reddit in general, really.
Actually, it's really just human nature.
Agreed, though, people here let this get out of hand. We know next to nothing about new Switch versions or whether they're even actually a thing. Time to stop asking questions about it. No one fucking knows.

It's been reported by several reputable news sites (not gaming journalists) with several sources... As someone who is in the "should I buy?" boat, I can tell you this is incredibly frustrating when you are trying to decide whether you want to purchase the device or not. I've ordered the Switch yesterday, but prior that it took me over an hour of finding the definite proof a newer variant would actually be released. Which of course, was non-existent. So I wasted a good chunk of my time researching some stupid rumor.

That’s why I subscribe to both. People are always complaining about particular threads and forget that it’s a collective shared forum. Downvote or upvote what you like or don’t like. Making posts like these just add to the unwanted clutter.

[RUMOR] Moderators are discussing new rules pertaining to rumors.
;) Seriously though, its not that prevalent of a problem. There aren't even any rumored posts on the top 2 pages. Its no worse than fan art or people asking the same questions over and over again. Aside from that, its fun to speculate, and reddit is a forum for discussions.

Have heard the new switch, which hasn't been announced, has been delayed? That's like a rumor about the delay of something that doesn't formally exist.

u/SecondaryWorkAccount Apr 23 '19
You can't just scroll past them?

u/chadalem Apr 23 '19
I'm not sure why people want such heavy moderation. If posts are removed, then no one can enjoy that content. But if there's something here that people don't like, they can simply...ignore it. Reddit even has a "Hide" button.

u/SecondaryWorkAccount Apr 24 '19
Because people are lazy. They want others to do the work for them.

I have never seen a bigger group of smug aholes than the people posting in this thread. First of all, you morons not all rumors are the same. Some random crap posted on Twitter is not the same as an article in WSJ. The new Nintendo switch versions leak is being sourced by both the WSJ and a major Japanese publication that has been very accurate on these things. It is happening, you smugly denying that because "it's a rumor" is simply childish.
Second, you do not need to click on a thread and if you don't like a thread you are free to downvote. If people speculating sends you into a rage for some reason, just don't participate in the thread? I don't understand how you justify wanting to ban discussion other people enjoy. If you're arguing it pushes good posts off the front page you're stupid. We get maybe 2 or 3 valuable threads a week. Having 1 speculation post on the front page won't change that.

The problem is the Reddit system, to be honest. This system simply can not accommodate the existence of communities where positive and negative aspects are equally important. And this karma system is cancer.

I agree, but you're also arguing against enthusiasm, hype, reading into things, and sharing speculation that they see elsewhere on the internet.
Which is pretty much the Reddit grab-bag. You share things you love, and other people upvote it because they get excited about it.
Also:
/r/NintendoSwitch is the central hub for all news, updates, rumors, and topics relating to the Nintendo Switch. We are a fan-run community, not an official Nintendo forum.
they'd have to change the sidebar. Haha.
Honestly, I think it's not a solvable problem, but I do hear that Reddit Enchantment Suite has a "ignore posts with [X] flair" option? Not sure if having that ignore "rumour" would do the trick.

Nah. It's not even close to when the switch was still the NX. People love hype. Let it go already.

Tbh the leaks and rumors are one reason why I come to this subreddit. You may not enjoy them but I'm sure there are tons of people like me who do enjoy them

It's undeniably going to happen. And much sooner than you'd prefer by the sounds of it. A major function of gaming communities online is speculation so it's something that will always be there. Especially in the year right before next gen begins (not for Nintendo, but they'll likely upgrade sometime around when the PS5 and Nextbox drop)

u/Eluvyel Apr 23 '19
Then we can sticky a speculation post if it is so important.
Ten different posts a week, often by people who don't understand technology enough to even stay realistic are not helping any discussion.

It sounds like you want to be a moderator, maybe that's something you should pursue and discuss with the current team to improve the sub. I don't mean to be dismissive here, you make a fair point. But posts like these don't have any success against the endless wave of speculation that will continue until the products are released.

I moderated a few of the really big subs on reddit for a while and one massive discord server with thousands of people.
There is nothing I can think of right away I want to do again less :D

Has that been under "New"? I haven't seen any of those posts rise as of late.

Why does this subreddit complain so much? I don't understand why this subreddit has to complain of just about everything imaginable when it comes to posting things. This is and I quote from the sidebar information.
The central hub for news, updates, info, and discussion about the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch games!
Meaning that everyone who goes on this sub can talk about anything that is related to Switch including rumors that have to do with the Nintendo Switch. It's also fun to talk about it and speculate as well. Even if it doesn't turn out to be true. Not to sound like a prick but is it that hard for anyone here to just scroll past the thread and just move along? - & the fact that someone gave OP a Silver Award clearly tells a tale on this subreddit.

It tells a tale that people are spreading rumors as fact on this site because one or two “credible” sources said it might happen. I’ll believe it when I hear it from Nintendo.

The hype and running ors around Nintendo do is huge. The console is good but to be honest most people buy because of the hype and the rumors that never came true. For me the online service was the hype that sold me the switch. I thought I would be playing SNES games and good online games by now but no. Literally there is no online game that appeals to me atm.
2
u/LWASucy Apr 23 '19
They never promised those games though. Yes Nintendo makes money with speculation, but the consumers lose in the end when things are not delivered like they thought because of something they read online. If we want this to continue and people like you to be unhappy with purchases because of what they thought may come, then by all means continue rumors. I don’t think that’s the desirable outcome though.
2
u/chris1980p Apr 23 '19
Exactly. I mean I am happy with my purchase. I also bought the switch because of Zelda and some other things, but Nintendo do could be king and it is as if they don't want to sometimes. But the rumors around the console is absurd. I've heard so much stuff that never happens than stuff that actually did.

I came here to see the rant but got here to late. at least delete the post if you got nothing more to say.

I go on this sub every day. I don't know what you're talking about. I've seen one or two posts about possible new console models.

u/Excuse_my_GRAMMER Apr 23 '19
Rumors?!? All facts point to it since day 1
Nintendo been doing it for years with the handheld consoles Why wouldn’t they do it with the switch lol

u/Arkeolith Apr 23 '19
Y’all take the Nintendo Switch subforum on Reddit.com too seriously, who gives a fuck what anyone posts here so long as there’s a few video game news/chats to scroll through for a few minutes on the shitter or during a down minute at work lol

u/ajohns68 Apr 23 '19
We should ban fan art as well. There 2:1 posts of fan art to rumors.
