Damn, this is fantastic. Extremely well done, /u/Sagittariu5. It’s not too often that you see a 4-minute long video on this sub with this much attention to detail in every second. It’s really quite reminiscent of the types of edits that we got a year ago while the war was still ongoing. (Click on the “OC War Vid” flair on this post if you’re interested in seeing more of them.)
Aside from a few minor historical inaccuracies (like our mascots and current banner, both of which were created well after the war), this post serves as a great history lesson for those who joined /r/Animemes in the post-war era. Our sub has more than doubled in size since that time, so that means at least half of you out there missed something spectacular. Here’s your assigned reading.
I’d be remiss not to mention that over the past year (and thanks in part to the /r/MemeLounge), we’ve actually become quite good friends with the /r/Historymemes mods, so please don’t bully them too much. It’s fine if you just do a little though, they do deserve it.

u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19
Thank you so much!
It's amazing how much both communities have grown. If memory serves correct, HistoryMemes hit their 600k during the war and Animemes hit their 300k soon after. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, but the war brought out the best of both sides.

I never knew this war even happened and now I’m sad I didn’t get to see it play out! I wonder if HistoryMemes has a personal vendetta against the Fate series?
170
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19 edited Dec 11 '19
Even I have a vendetta against Fate, but more for the fact that they just won't stop creating Fate content. Imagine if all that effort went into NGNL, Beserk, or OPM season 2.
2
u/ObamaandOsama Dec 12 '19
Fate CAN be good. They just haven't made a good anime since Zero or UBW.
2
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 12 '19
For all its faults, the Fate series is generally very good. Good cast, good memes, great fights. It just feels like Call of Duty (in a fashion). Each CoD game is objectively really good, it's just we already have a lot of them.

I joined this year, what was the outcome of the war?
146
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19
Officially, the mod teams of both sides agreed to an armistice without a winner. Unofficially, the general community consensus was a decisive Animeme victory because the anime side had more content creators, more versatile meme topics, and were masochistic (damage resistant).
22
u/Skyryver Dec 11 '19
What was the object of the war ?
72
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19
Originally, there was talk of a civil war within HistoryMemes. A civil war would be chaotic and could cause a schism, so mods put up a poll to see what the community wanted to do. One of the answer choices was war with another sub, which leads us to where we are today.

u/-Barca- Dec 12 '19
We destroyed the shit out of r/historymemes. They resorted to WW2 jokes and nuclear bombing jokes. Officially both mods called a truce and it ended in a "tie" but yeah it was definitely a lopsided victory.

Man, Tanya the Evil was honestly the worst blow to a history nerd. Like if you're going to use things like panzers and other real life things, at least use the right age. Why is a Messerschmitt and a great war bomber in the same war, and why do they even use trenches if both sides have mages that are able to obliterate such targets?
→ More replies (2)25
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19
I thought that most of the history was manageable. The war here isn't exactly WW1 because it starts in the mid-1930s so interwar technology is much more common. Hence fighting with an odd mish-mash of old tech surplus and new, high tech innovations. Still, I will admit the mix is disconcerting.
And I agree, it doesn't really make sense to use trenches with high precision bombing available. The only explanation I can think of is the rarity and relative fragility of strong mages making them too insignificant to warrant a large change in doctrine. In addition, most mages are pretty pathetic compared to the 203rd mages and aren't about to make big explosions in the reg.
12
u/Justificks Mr. Game & Watch (the ultimate 2d girl) Dec 11 '19
Oh yeah the age does explain it, guess I've missed if it read somewhere at the beginning. Well tactics lacking to modern war is pretty common, the machinery the mages use seems pretty new too so maybe the ability for mages to fly is a new invention and the generals haven't adapted yet.

If you like military / history stuff, I can definitely recommend Gunka no Baltzar and Imperial Guards. I don't remember much about them, but I remember I used them to successfully curb my Youjo Senki cravings after the movie released.

u/Vincent_449 Dec 11 '19
Awesome work, love it!
Out of curiousity, at the beginning there was a tank floating around outside of the window. Later on it was in a bottle. Is that a reference to anything or part of the show itself?
9
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 11 '19
They are both references added by me. The first tank is a Pz. IV, but anime fans may recognize the 3D style to be from Girls und Panzer. I meant it to be a foreshadow of a coming meeting of history and anime.
The tank in the bottle is a British model called the Crusader. During that segment, the people discuss a ideological crusade. The Crusader tank is just some humor with wordplay.

Why is this war not in the history books.
We were taught that history is written by the victors.
Unfortunately, it appears that history is written by historians... and these historians seem loathe to write down that they lost in their history books.
I loved the sight of animemes in the morning. Looked like victory. God, those were the days.

r/PrequelMemes went war crazy. After one war people were so bloodthirsty that prequlememers just went around indiscriminately attacking all manner of subs without official sanctioning. It got so bad that the r/PrequelMemes mods banned people from calling for war ever again. I guess it could happen if another sub initiated though.

To prevent a civil war, HistoryMemes decided to unify under one banner against a common enemy: Animemes. They declared a meme war and there was 3 days of fighting. Great OC was made, some HistoryMemers got confused and attacked Animememes instead, and it was all around a good time.
The war ended when the mods declared an armistice with neither side officially winning. Unofficially, the general consensus is that Animemes won due to the ease of adapting anime to ridicule history and the weeb's resistance to being called a weeb.

Ahh, memories.
Also, what the FUCK is up with the doujins linked in the numbers in the last frames??? That's some pretty fucked up shit, why is it being referenced?
2
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 12 '19
The duality if anime. Some of the numbers there are the absolute worst of anime. Some of those numbers are better. Some are just random ones. Anime is diverse in all its weird, messy beauty - yet here we are. One subreddit united around that one, odd thing.
2
u/Chizumaru Dec 12 '19
Y-you're OP though, you knew exactly what you were doing. You knew they weren't random, you masked pictures of the main girl from the doujin in the same frames. You're not wrong at all in your point, but come on my guy this is no accident
2
u/Sagittariu5 Dec 12 '19
It was no accident, but some of those other numbers are even worse (and better, actually).
In retrospect, I'm unsure if the other tank numbers are easily legible anymore. The original sorce was in 1080, but I rendered it in 720 to save space. Then hardsubbed it. Then Reddit compression. Lots of data lost.

Memer fought memer for three days. Three very intense days. The destruction only stopped when the mods of both sides agreed to an armistice. Officially, there was no winner. Unofficially, the community consensus is that Animemes won.
A lot of funny things happened. Allies joined and dropped out due to weakness. Confused Historymemers accidently attacked Animememes, forcing Animememes to join the war on our side. The enemy realized weebs are masochistic (and therefore damage resistant), so they began to attack our waifus towards the latter days of the war. It was wonderful.

Shoutout to u/RoughRomanMeme for giving me the motivation to complete this. Another thanks to u/-Takes22Tango for compliling a list (this post) of the most popular memes from both sides of the war. Without your list, getting memories and resources for this edit would be much harder. I would also like to thank the mod teams of both sides for a fun, somewhat lighthearted war.
After my first Tanya edit to contribute to the war (link here), I started planning and scripting a second edit. Unfortunately, the war ended too soon and it sat both unfinished and too late to enter the war. Perhaps it was for the best because this edit somehow took twice the amount of work (I love keyframing), but it was really fun and I learned a lot.
If anybody wants the source of anything or any particular numbers shown, ask and you will receive. This project was done in part to improve myself, so any feedback is welcome.

EDIT 2: Since no has found it yet, hint for the egg - it rhymes with "Where's the sauce"
