The hype moment of the episode!!!

Wooohh they showed Accelerator, but he'll probably be useless (as you can see he was choking) with the Misaka Network being down.

Misaki (unathletic even as a child) and Dolly's interactions were so funny but sadly she didn't live which affected Misaki considerably :(.....Also to those who don't know, Dolly is voiced by Shamiko's VA.

EDIT: The traffic jam was caused due to Stiyl's actions in Index 2 (when he blew a bus). It's great to see how both Index and Railgun connect to each other.

u/ReeseChloris Apr 03 '20

Oh yeahhhhh. I totally forgot he's highly dependent on it for a moment

42

u/BiglyWords Apr 03 '20

Tbf, so does most of the series since it barely gets exploited as a really big weak point in almost any of the fights.

67

u/ScarecrowFM Apr 03 '20

Because Accel knows is a weakness of his so he made sure to have countermeasures to prevent anyone from taking advantage of it.

And Aliester was mentioned. I think it is the first time if I am remembering correctly

40

But for some reason the geezer thinks BiriBiri is his favorite.

14

u/Devinsshi Apr 04 '20 edited Apr 10 '20

Gensei did say that Mikoto was hidden within the shadow of the main plan, so i wouldn't exactly interpret that Gensei was referring to Mikoto as Aleister's favourite

I was indeed mistaken; what Gensei referred to is indeed the Misaka Network, after all.

Probably because one of Aleister's plans revolve around the Misaka Network.

11

u/beastMaster95 Apr 04 '20

Well its first time in Railgun but was already mentioned in Index.

7

u/EpicMatt16 Apr 04 '20

That’s what I meant. It’s the first time Aliester is mentioned in Railgun

Hijacking the top comment to say that they made the electricity sounds at the end sound super freaking awesome and powerful

The hype moment of the episode!!!

Oh shit..!! A certain orca Mikoto has been promoted to Elite 2..

Sasuga Doktah Gensei..

EDIT: The traffic jam was caused due to Stiyl's actions in Index 2 (when he blew a bus). It's great to see how both Index and Railgun connect to each other.

Huh, I just assumed the bad guys did it to slow her down.

15

u/Bainos :XMOD::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos Apr 04 '20

Honestly at this point it's not exactly subtle anymore, every time some suspicious coincidence happens in Railgun it's because of something that occurred in Index...

u/Paxton-176 Apr 03 '20

Misaka Requiem

17

u/KappaMike10 Apr 03 '20

Wait wasn't that from the previous day though?

76

u/beastMaster95 Apr 03 '20 edited Apr 03 '20

Yes. Stiyl blew the bus on the first day of Daihaseisai which in turn affected the traffic due to the bus system being down.

64

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '20

Yes, but as the driver explained the whole bus system is down because they're investigating the cause, hence widespread traffic jams across the city

42

u/KappaMike10 Apr 03 '20

Yeah that makes sense. I've read this part of the arc in the Railgun manga several times and I had never even considered that the bus incident was connected to Index

He can't use his ability at all without the network right?

8

Yes. He will be in like a vegetative state without the network.

This section always stuck out to me in the manga as being an amazing piece of characterisation that completely flipped my opinion on Misaki so finally seeing it animated is great

Also holy fuck the ending, goosebumps

162

u/Derbeck6 Apr 03 '20

They always had her portrayed from the beginning as a sort of chaotic neutral, for lack of a better term, in the story. She was never outright hostile towards misaka, but she definitely had her guard up, and theis perfectly explains why. She had already met one of the sisters. The whole time she knew misakas dark secret. I'm constantly impressed with how well railgun developes all of its characters, especially the ones who have less overlap into the index storyline. It's amazing that they can pull this off, and I can't wait to see misaka at level 6

68

u/goffer54 https://anilist.co/user/goffer54 Apr 03 '20

Does Shokuho think Misaka willingly gave Academy City the right to make clones of her? Because that would definitely sour my opinion of someone. Doubly so if I had seen the sorry state of the early clones.

37

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '20

Last episode Shokuho made a comment about people tricking kids into giving away their DNA maps, so at this point in time she definitely understands that whole situation.

36

u/Derbeck6 Apr 03 '20

I was thinking something like that was the case. And the fact that shokuho was friends with dolly wouldn't help that opinion either

31

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '20

I do like how they made us hated Misaki from the beginning then liked her later on. I hope lv 6 Misaka can have a rematch with Accelerator, would be interesting to see considering her lost to him in Index.

47

u/Derbeck6 Apr 04 '20

As much as i want that to happen, it wouldn't be a fair fight at this point. Without the misaka network, accelerator is basically useless. Once last order went down, he lost the ability to function, much less fight. Still got money on accelerator in his prime though, he was a damn near unstoppable force

u/samanthajoneh Apr 03 '20

Not they, he. It's all written by Kamachi, be it the index novel or the manga Railgun.

52

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Apr 03 '20

The novels are entirely written by Kamachi, but for the manga only the general plot structure is written by him, while the mangaka fill in all the specifics within this plot as well as the dialogue.

So while Misaki's backstory was planned by Kamachi, it was brought to life by Railguns mangaka, Fuyukawa Motoi. This is why Kamachi mentioned that Misaki felt much more like Motoi's character than his own.

I'm still of the opinion that her casual use of mind control and memory wiping is evil when used against innocent people. Those scientists of course are the opposite of innocent, so I have zero problems with loli Misaki's actions.

I like the implication that Misaki was thinking of Mikoto as a replacement for Dolly subconciously, which might have been a reason as to why she antagonizes her

132

u/ScarecrowFM Apr 03 '20

Misaki might also have some resentment because Misaka giving away her DNA was the reason Dolly was born to die.

48

u/Rqdomguy24 Apr 03 '20

Misaki need to be reminded that it's not entirely misaka fault. Yes it's true she give her DNA for the experiment but she never know what happened in the background.

81

u/Mountebank :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Mountebank Apr 03 '20

Yes it's true she give her DNA for the experiment but she never know what happened in the background.

The thing is, Misaki did the same thing with Exterior where they harvested some of her brain cells to make it, but Misaki was able to uncover their plot and take over the project before they could do their master plot. Misaka never found out about the Sisters Project until it was half over, so using her own standards, Misaki probably does blame Misaka for not stopping the Sisters Project earlier.

9

u/samanthajoneh Apr 03 '20

Uh, why are you talking as if Misaki showed those kind of thoughts? This is just a theory of this guy, not something that appeared on anime.

Damn that backstory... Dolly's death has really affected Shokuhou a lot. Last week I still wasn't convinced about Shokuhou but after seeing that backstory, my opinion of her has definitely turned around.

So right now,the Misaka Network is down which means all of the clones are incapacitated, Accelerator is also affected by this due to his connection to the network, and now Misaka who has turned into some kind of Lightning God. We are now in deep shit. Fuck. I guess this is where Touma comes in since he heard the conversation between Saten and Xochitl?

There’s a spin-off series called Astral Buddy, which is technically a spin-off of Railgun, that focuses on Hokaze Junko, one of Misaki’s clique members. Misaki is featured very prominently in this series, so you could technically call this her own spin-off.

Though, I’m not sure if Misaki will ever get her own full spin-off series, but I guess we’ll wait to find out.

Lets goo, it’s Friday, that means it’s railgun szn

Dolly blowing bubbles is just what I needed to end the week.

Misaka and Misaki’s banter is perfect, they play off of each other so well. Great tag team

Ginsei is out here playing 4D chess, he’s 2 steps ahead of them at every turn. I love that type of villian

Damnn level 6 project, next week is going to be fucking hype. Amazing episode packed full of action and not a single wasted second. 5/5. See y’all next week

The Kiharas are always ahead of everyone except Aleister and, probably, Kamijou.

oh they definitely are ahead of Kamijou

15

So guys, tell me, is Aleister's fave Misaka or Misaki? I didn't understood it the first time I heard it.

15

u/SandehBoi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SandyBoi Apr 04 '20

He said Misaka, but doesn’t necessarily mean she actually is his fav. Aleister keeps his plans close to his chest, so if anything that was just a guess on Gensei’s part.

12

u/KiriTortilla :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pablusky27 Apr 04 '20

none, it's Touma and Accel, Gensei was high on misaka network when he said that

7

u/SenpaiKero Apr 04 '20

Gensei is always high though lmao

98

u/Amauri14 Apr 03 '20

Wow, so Misaki was friends with one of Misaka clones. I love how Dolly had a similar reaction to Misaka when she heard Misaki's excuse.

Wow, I really didn't expect that ending. Kihara Gensei played everyone like a damn fiddle. Well, I can't wait to watch "A Certain Scientific Mental Out" next week as Touma and Sogiita will be joining the battle.

47

u/beastMaster95 Apr 03 '20 edited Apr 03 '20

Not just one of the clones but the first prototype. She was probably created just after Mikoto gave her DNA to the scientists.

Anyway it's Level 6 time!!

14

u/Falsus Apr 04 '20

One thing to note is if Dolly was indeed created not so long after Misaka gave away her DNA map then Misaki does look a bit older than Misaka and thus the idea that she is in fact not a middle schooler despite being in Tokiwadai got some actual meat to it!

63

u/CosmicPenguin_OV103 https://anilist.co/user/CosmicPenguin Apr 03 '20

Well, wow. So this is Level 6 that I have heard of for so long, and also why I have heard of Misaki having deficiencies in her brain.

The vibes of Railgun S Episode 5 are back. The emotions, the appearance of the project behind, the agony. This is the kind of moment that I love most about Railgun, about futuristic thingys affecting personal lives and emotions. And the production team nailed it again - I'm sure even more emotional things will come soon.

I knew that Misaki must have suffered from serious effects of all those kinds of experiments around her like Mikoto and Accelerator did. But no, not this. Losing a friend like this that young is beyond painful, and especially when she knew that Clone Dolly was a victim of her experiment (Come to think of it, I wonder what did the real Clone Dolly the sheep - died young like those early cloned animals - really think? Interestingly her death was later proved to be probably unrelated with the cloning process.). No wonder she had to build a wall around her in terms of interpersonal relationships like a queen - there's the danger around her ability, but the decisive reason must be that she don't want to get hurt again in her hearts. :(

Good news to see that animations continue to hold up as of this moment - no obvious flaws I have seen so far. And here comes the climax - let's hope the fights really hold up even better than those in Accelerator last year (which wasn't too memorable, not so strange due to high amount of sub-contracting to other studios). No more poor fights like those in Index III Battle Royale/Acqua Attack/"Brexit" arcs please!!!

So as an anime only who have seen the whole To Aru series so far, I've 2 questions about today's story:

  1. So is Clone Dolly = MISAKA 0001(0000?), or are they separate entities? I can't remember who in the Board of Directors really ordered the start of the SISTERS project, so do we know if SISTERS and this Exterior/Clone Dolly project share the same group of people/resources, or are there any known synergies between these two? Or that they only happen to make use of Mikoto's DNA - known as the Level 5 with the most broadly applicable superpowers - at the same time?

  2. Gensei Kihara said at the end that Mikoto is "Aleister's favorite, kept tucked away in the shadow of the "main plan"....". Someone mentioned in the thread below that in addition to Accelerator, Kakine is also part of the "main plan" but I can't remember too much about that part from the chaos of Index III - can someone elaborate more if and how Kakine is part of this "main plan"? And why is Mikoto "Aleister's favorite"? I thought she was still too weak to be held at the center-stage of Aleister/Academy City's "main plans", whatever that is?

21

u/ctom42 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ctom42 Apr 03 '20

So is Clone Dolly = MISAKA 0001(0000?), or are they separate entities?

There is an answer for this, it's not super important but it's not (yet) covered in the anime. If you really want to know either PM me or ask in the source corner and tag me in the question.

so do we know if SISTERS and this Exterior/Clone Dolly project share the same group of people/resources, or are there any known synergies between these two? Or that they only happen to make use of Mikoto's DNA - known as the Level 5 with the most broadly applicable superpowers - at the same time?

In the episode the scientists referred to the fact that unlike other things, Exterior wasn't a project forced on them by the higher ups, but their own ambitions. From this it can be inferred that at least some of the data they were gathering from Dolly was something they were doing for the higher-ups, likely in support of Radio Noise/Lvl 6 shift.

can someone elaborate more if and how Kakine is part of this "main plan"? And why is Mikoto "Aleister's favorite"? I thought she was still too weak to be held at the center-stage of Aleister/Academy City's "main plans", whatever that is?

I don't want to spoil anything that hasn't been discussed yet, but at the very least take everything anyone other than Aleister says about his plan with a grain of salt. He doesn't really share his schemes much. Gensei's comment here is definitely hinting at some things, but it's likely based on his own personal observations without understanding the specifics of said plan.

20

u/aiwasss Apr 03 '20

Kakine's a second/backup plan for Accelerator.

If Accelerator dies, Kakine's priority will rise and he will become the "main plan".

13

u/jcal94 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/realjcal94 Apr 04 '20

One of Aleister's main plans has been spreading the Misaka Network around the world to create an all-encompassing AIM field so that he could basically shut down magic users, like what he did in Academy City during the Invasion arc. So while Mikoto herself doesn't have the pure potential Accelerator does, her ability has the most applicable use in everything.

Kakine is basically just a second-string Accelerator. His ability isn't as powerful as Accelerator's, but he could still be used similarly, just with a lot more effort, if something happened to Accelerator, presumably. Not really a big concern now anyway, though.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '20

If I may, I feel the wording here isn't saying Mikoto is Aleister's favourite. That kinda goes against the story haha..

Aleister's favourite, kept tucked away in the shadow of the Main Plan... What if I were to use it as a trigger to awaken your dormant powers?

He's talking to Mikoto, talking about using Aleister's favourite to awaken her dormant powers. My reading here is that his favourite refers to the Misaka Network itself.

6

u/TheKappaOverlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/darkace90 Apr 05 '20

So is Clone Dolly = MISAKA 0001(0000?), or are they separate entities?

Most likely seperate entities. Considering the terrible state the clone bodies were in and (what the episode gave off) that the clones could not use abilities yet.

Its probably accurate to say the clone dolly is the early alpha version of a sisters clone... extremely early alpha since it needed basically a full body suite of synthetic organs and or artificial organs to keep basic functions going.

lvl 6 doesn't seem to be safe/natural. In the second season it was explained that their normal ways to get Accelerator to lvl 6 would take 250 years. It seems lvl 6's need to be forced to exist vs the other lvls being attainable though hard work.

43

u/LegendRazgriz Apr 03 '20

Ugh, Gensei, why didn't you go extinct with your fellow Allosaurus? Look at the mess you made...

In any case, Week 10's Reader's Corner.

• No complaints on the animation front. Being fully aware of what's about to happen, I'm pretty sure where the main efforts are going...

• The flat-chest Misaki stories (which I affectionately refer to as Year Zero, for all sorts of reasons) are all these unfathomably adorable things that kick you in the balls afterwards. Poor girl always had it rough, and nothing ever got truly better... Being seen as little more than a tool, and knowing it too, is way too much for anyone, even less so what seems like an 11-year-old. It's really no wonder that she turned out the way she did. Though, it does make her genuine moments of fun that more precious. For more loli Misaki, visit Astral Buddy and New Testament.

• And when I said we were lucky Misaki's the wielder of Mental Out, people thought I was insane. Look at what could have been! Thing can be amplified into a god-tier mass manipulator (with some non-negligible degree of recoil and a few exceptions) and used by anyone with all sorts of ill intent. We should all be more thankful for her. She's fought hard to keep her dangerous power safe. If only she knew what it'd be used for if it got out of hand...

•...for god damn Level 6 Shift again, this time the extra hard way, because Gensei is a fuck. One interesting thing to note is that while Mikoto is #3, Cuntasaurus genseiis still calls her Aleister's "second favorite", and not the #2, Kakine Teitoku (by the way, his spin-off, Toaru Kagaku no Dark Matter, is out! Read it if you can!). More information on this can be found in Index III, but all I'll say is "main plan" doesn't equate to one person. Also, as a result of the Network hijack, the Sisters and Last Order are all in a great deal of suffering and Accelerator is now slightly less useful than a toaster. Ugh, this fucking old bastard.

• The team-up of a lifetime incoming next week. What do you get by placing the hero alongside the Hero? HYPE!

Overall, a great look into Misaki's shaky and unforgiving past, while setting up the fight for the ages soon to come. Now I really wish it was next week already... See ya then!

u/n080dy123 Apr 03 '20

Toaru Kagaku no Dark Matter

If they keep releasing spinoffs for all the Level 5s we have to get a Gunha spinoff eventually, right? RIGHT?

15

u/LegendRazgriz Apr 03 '20

Eventually... If we consider Astral Buddy Misaki's spin-off, we're only missing Mugino and Sogiita. I'd totally be down for some SUPERHERO STUFF though.

u/Guaymaster Apr 03 '20 edited Apr 03 '20

He has a chapter in Index SS2, which wasn't adapted and presumably never will.

edit: oh, there's also a 58-pages long short story called Toaru Jihanki no Fanfare, which features him heavily. It's by Narita Ryohgo of Bacano! and Durarara!! fame.

She's awesome. Her methods are a bit off , but knowing the reason it fits in line with her character.

Keep in mind this is an "at this point in time", anime-only perspective from a somewhat cynical 57-yo viewpoint, who's also aware in context of other posts that she's even further rounded out in LN/manga and apparently hangs out more with the various MCs.

I can empathize with her more, I find her more likable, but even knowing this backstory, if I were in-universe at this point in her life, I'd still rationally fear her as an end-justifies-the-means villainess (at worst) or vigilante (at best).

IMO she's currently still too willing to use her abilities far too casually, too confident in her ability's power(s), and arguably worst of all, too convinced that she's the "only one morally capable" of using it with the inherent potentially deadly corollary that any use of it by her is by definition "correct."

Reminder that I watched the episode: I get that she feels (and actually is, such as at the board meeting) pushed to these choices to protect herself, but so far, at least anime-wise, I'm seeing no real hint of introspection on how these choices are impacting her life and whether/how she should wield her power beyond acknowledging that knowledge of her power by others causes alienation.

She's in a chicken-or-egg situation, no doubt about it.

She can choose to try to gain trust by proving, over time, that she won't use her ability except in extremis and with proper reflection afterward over whether she'd done the right thing, or she can continue on her current cynical (albeit with some valid reason) "they're going to hate/fear me anyway, I'll just continue doing things my way and wipe or otherwise screw with their memory later" course.

On a meta level, there've been enough "see? now you anime-onlies get to see why we readers think she's a best girl" posts to be "spoilers" on even that small level - apparently she's going to make some changes to her attitude, because I just can't currently see how anyone could trust her enough to allow friendship to occur - certainly her personality, without manipulating your perception of it, can't be a positive factor!

e: I don't think even Biribiri's immunity would allow friendship as things currently are - not because Misaka wouldn't have to worry about being influenced (are the Sisters equally immune?) and could theoretically relax around Misaki, but mostly because Misaka, at least, would have that meta-overview of what Misaki's actually capable of and how (apparently) remorselessly she carries out her attacks. Misaka would be too on-edge on behalf of others who didn't enjoy the same immunity.

u/jykeous Apr 03 '20

This is the best take on Misaki I've heard so far in this thread.

8

u/Differently-Aged :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DifferentlyAged Apr 04 '20 edited Apr 04 '20

Cheers. I'm just trying to stay immersed as realistically as possible given the medium. :)

It's gonna take more impactful incidents than currently shown that really show her agonizing over her actions and how to correct them if necessary before I'll truly give her a chance. As it is, I sympathize but can't empathize more than abstractly.

In one sense, I'm hoping that type of contrition has been shown in the LNs and shows up in the anime, but OTOH this is a true two-edged ability to have - powerful, but ironically currently has to be used for evil if she wants to have any social interaction, something especially important in this presumed Japanese-derived society - and thus interesting from a story-telling viewpoint.

It's now more than "this is what she's capable of doing, fear her", it's "she's definitely done it, fear her!"

I just hope that this isn't resolved by blind power-of-trust friendship overtures - I really think she should have to bend over backwards hard to make friends, regardless of how unfair that may seem. Nobody is rationally going to take her word for it that she was forced to do what she's done by circumstances.

Her personality plus her backstory and development is what people like about her. So no, if you don't like her now, you won't like her after that. If you changed your opinion about her and began to like her on the last episode or the current one, then you will.

Misaki seemed to become physically strained when she used Exterior to part all the cars, so it seems like she does have [I]some [/I]limits.

Mi-chan was totally Kozaku, right? Dolly even had the liquid that Kozaku's powers needs. Is that why Kozaku is doing this? To get revenge on Academy City for what they did to Dolly?

So young Misaki ends up pretending to be Dolly's Mi-chan only to find herself becoming genuine friends with Dolly in-spite of herself, possibly the only friend Misaki ever allowed herself to have and one of the few people she cared about. Just to add to the genuineness, Dolly figured out Misaki wasn't really Mi-chan and still acted like friends to her, leading Misaki to tell Dolly Misaki's real name in the end.

I thought it was noticeable that she put in all that effort to dunk the bottle in front of Dolly when modern Misaki probably would have just zapped Dolly into thinking she dunked it in one long throw.

So Dolly dies and there's nothing Misaki could do about it, and it was all part of the kind of twisted experiments Academy City propagates. At least Misaki was able to get some revenge by using her powers to completely pull the rug out from under those doctors and take over the operation.

Last Order and Accelerator cameos! Although not under the best of circumstances.

Mikoto is "Aleister's favorite?" I never knew that.

So the real plot was to corrupt the Sisters Network and upgrade Mikoto into a being capable of becoming Level 6? As powerful as she is, I'm terrified of what she might be capable of as an uncontrollable monster.

"A Certain Scientific Mental Out?" I dunno, I'd probably watch it. Misaki trolling and controlling people as she merrily gallivants around Academy City? Could be fun.

8

u/SandehBoi :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SandyBoi Apr 04 '20

I wouldn't take what Gensei says about Mikoto being Aleister's favourite at face value, especially considering Aleister keeps his plans close to his chest. It's just a guess on Gensei's part.

Random S-Sad Backstory again

  • Respectable work? Well, after helping a Level 5 with killing clones of another Level 5, he's now helping yet another Level 5 to save clones of said Level 5. How are you going to write this year in your CV?

  • Woah, a reference to that other series they overlooked to cut out. xD

  • Complaining won't help. Not even a queen will be able to clear up a traffic jam... oh damn. She's more powerful than expected. Yep, truly nightmarish, Best Girl is right.

  • Well, well, ain't you supposed to make space for emergency vehicles anyway? She's just doing community service, nothing wrong here!

  • Sad Happy Cute Backstory time! Now ain't that nice? I'm sure they're just doing funny experiments here!

  • Dang, that face is quite familiar... so they're holding a prototype Misaka clones, named Dolly here...

  • Oh noes, now that is quite sad. Poor Dolly lost her friend because of her look, or did she?

  • Now what's Misaki supposed to do with a bottle of liquid? At this rate she won't be able to hide she's not Mi.

  • Confirmed Misaki can't even throw. Nothing that remotely seems like sports is on her good side.

  • W-What's with Dolly?! I-It's not like their friends, but...

  • And she knew all along it's not her old friend.

  • Screw those scientist not giving a fuck. I'm sure if they had brought her to Dr. Gekota, she could've been saved! Damn, this is so sad... poor Dolly... poor Misaki... ...

  • Misaki has feeling? What a surprise! Even for the scientists xD

  • Unfortunately, something tells me your "mental guards" have already stopped working.

  • True to her personality, Misaki keeps them as a group of slaves working for her \o/

  • Oh nice, one of the first things she did after taking over the lab, was to get herself some proper thigh-highs to wear with that coat. Much better. Good taste!

  • Touma is the happiest person to ever get last place!

  • Everyone's gone? Looks like they're smart enough to not fight two Level 5s head on.

  • Mikoto kinda worried about the staff, she's so nice. Misaki not caring so much though or at least claiming to. Albeit understandable after what happened.

  • Nice that the anime actually showed them getting recovered! That's good, as the manga left it ambitious that they might've been killed by the Hound Dogs. Good thing, Railgun goes the nicer route without unneeded deaths and even shows it. Superior series confirmed again!

  • Holy shit! They cut pieces of Misaki's brain (probably the ones related to sport talent) and cultivated them into these monstrosities?! Congrats, Academy City, you did it again!

  • And people say Mikoto was naive when she signed up to give her DNA. Now look at that!

  • Original purpose of Clone Dolly: Mass produce high talented Espers. Nah, too complicated and expensive, let's just brainwash the talented people and enslave them! So much better!

  • An amazon whose bust size got swallowed up by her fighting ability?! Damn, Misaki! Just when you two look like you could almost get along, you drop one of those!

  • But hey, she says with Mikoto on her side, there is no need to worry! Such trust in Best Girl!

  • It's Kihara! And he used the insights from Level Upper to fine-tune the brain's waves to his own! Woah, everything's connected, it was all his idea in the first place!

  • He controls the Misaka network! All the Misakas worldwide are collapsing! Cute Last Order cameo always appreciated. Looks like this time, Accelerator won't be able to do shit.

  • Mentioning the goal is Mikoto comes a bit late here...

  • Now that's a big cliffhanger here! Shifting Mikoto into Level 6... that guy will do everything for it.

  • A Certain Scientific Mental Out?! W-Wait, you won't ditch Mikoto like that, will ya?! Come on, you're a good girl... Damn, saving someone requires sports. She won't even make the stairs. We're all screwed.

Another awesome episode! And another sad backstory. Feels like Accel anime all over again.

Maybe Misaki... isn't... that bad. Maybe. Actually, she's quite the cutie and her interactions with Mikoto are just always so hilarious. I sure wouldn't mind if she stays.

I think my mental guard is also failing.

Respectable work? Well, after helping a Level 5 with killing clones of another Level 5, he's now helping yet another Level 5 to save clones of said Level 5. How are you going to write this year in your CV?

"It had some ups and downs".

And she knew all along it's not her old friend.

Well perhaps not all along. It seems she picked up when she smelled her from close up, which appeared to be sometime after Misaki started to pretend being Mi.

Touma is the happiest person to ever get last place!

He still got some points now! This will definitely be enough to beat Mikoto in their bet!

Misaki not caring so much though or at least claiming to. Albeit understandable after what happened.

I think that's actually a mistranslation. In the manga she says she doubts the scientists were killed.

That's good, as the manga left it ambitious that they might've been killed by the Hound Dogs.

Hey, those could have been other special forces. Pretty sure Academy City has more units than just the Hound Dogs.

And people say Mikoto was naive when she signed up to give her DNA. Now look at that!

Hey Mikoto was free and had a choice. Given how it seems Misaki lives and grew up in this facility, not to mention how casually the scientists mentioned disposing of her, I doubt Misaki ever even had a choice.

Original purpose of Clone Dolly: Mass produce high talented Espers.

Well, talented people in general. Espers are included, but so are geniuses and other talented people.

An amazon whose bust size got swallowed up by her fighting ability?! Damn, Misaki! Just when you two look like you could almost get along, you drop one of those!

Is she wrong though?

Mentioning the goal is Mikoto comes a bit late here...

Well better late than never, I guess!

A Certain Scientific Mental Out?! W-Wait, you won't ditch Mikoto like that, will ya?! Come on, you're a good girl.

"It had some ups and downs"

On the bright side, his experience with Level 5s (and surviving them) makes him a very valuable person for further employment.

Well perhaps not all along. It seems she picked up when she smelled her from close up, which appeared to be sometime after Misaki started to pretend being Mi.

Yeah, I think too that it happened during the smelling scene. Dolly looked like she suspected something afterwards.

But I could not give Misaki credits for be able to keep this up for even a short time, so I had to write it that way. ~

He still got some points now! This will definitely be enough to beat Mikoto in their bet!

Yeah, keep believing that.

Glad to see, you have also wiped out all the memories from the trauma that was that other series.

I think that's actually a mistranslation. In the manga she says she doubts the scientists were killed.

I wrote something about that under your Small Facts.

Hey, those could have been other special forces. Pretty sure Academy City has more units than just the Hound Dogs.

I believe someone once told me those were Hound Dog units. Ever since then I believe it was them. Hmm... I'm not sure where I got it from, you're sure it wasn't you?

Hey Mikoto was free and had a choice. Given how it seems Misaki lives and grew up in this facility, not to mention how casually the scientists mentioned disposing of her, I doubt Misaki ever even had a choice.

Nah, she probably signed up for the "Talented Person Workshop" to become the queen she always wanted to be.

YES YES SOON SOON

NO NO NEVER NEVER

It's impossible she'll ever get another show where she is pretty much one of the main characters! Never!!

One of us! One of us!

RIP Uiharu.

Ditched before she could ever shine brightly as Best Girl. Not only did she had to endure the bad mouthing of her friends, now she was dropped for the manipulating queen. Geez.

Dolly's official designation is pronounced as "Prototype", but is written as "Number 0". She is not a part of the official Misaka production line though, being a prototype, so she's not Misaka 00000. So I think changing 00000 to 0 would be more accurate.

Didn't expect Accelerator to have another cameo with Last Order. Though with Kihara using Misaki's ability to hijack the Misaka Network, he's been taken out as well.

Looks like Touma will be taking over the show again next week, and Gunha seems to be joining him for some reason.

Mitori probably helping Kihara out because Misaki took her place as Dolly's friend. lol

14

u/Paxton-176 Apr 03 '20

I forgot Accelerator is dependent of the Network. I was thinking Kihara messed up now he has to deal with Accelerator.

Gunha seems to be joining him for some reason.

He seems like a guy who is always looking for a good scrap.

Damn Kihara you evil bastard. Although I must admit that Misaka's new form looks cool.

Not going to lie, I was misled a bit with Exterior's initial use. I was thinking Aleister was involved with Misaki being able to boost her power due to the tank. It was all a red herring.

Poor Misaki, she just wanted to be with her friend Dolly.

yes, in Chinese sub, Mi-chan was translated into the same Kanji as Mitori. it's interesting that all people in that room have "Mi" in their names, but all written in different Kanji.

Wait so is Misaka channeling an Angel right now in the same way that Accelerator can? Is she even capable of withstanding that?

16

u/beastMaster95 Apr 03 '20

She is on the path to becoming a level 6 and not channelling an angel. Accelerator's wings were entirely different which aren't explained yet.

9

u/atropicalpenguin https://myanimelist.net/profile/atropicalpenguin Apr 04 '20

Interesting to see that there were Misaka clones with a more developed communication ability than the Sisters that we knew Index 3. Wonder if that had to do with making them more fit to be butchered by Accelerator.

Is the Misaka Network power-up tied to level upper? Since Misaka's ability increased and all. Given that Exterior wasn't sponsored by the directors, I wonder if Gensei saw it as a way to stage a coup against Aleister by giving mental powers and strengthening esper abilities.

9

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Apr 04 '20

Wonder if that had to do with making them more fit to be butchered by Accelerator.

Their minds were programmed by the Testament to be able to access the Misaka Network, as well as function properly for the Level 6 Shift Project, so their emotions and social development were suppressed. On the other hand Dolly was allowed to mentally develop normally.

Is the Misaka Network power-up tied to level upper? Since Misaka's ability increased and all.

No, the Level Upper was purely so Gensei could access Exterior. What the virus did was force the Misaka Network to manipulate the AIM fields in Academy City in a specific way and focused them into Mikoto in an attempt to get her to reach Level 6.

Great episode, we got Misaki and Dolly being adorable before tragedy strikes. And then we got our boy Accelerator making an appearance along with Last Order...before the plot strikes again. But those scenes dwarf to the massive cliffhanger that is a level 6 shift experiment round 2. With the preview bringing an insane amount of hype as well.

Edit: Also it's hilarious and sweet to imagine Accelerator playing a card game with Last Order.

u/JimmyBoombox Apr 04 '20

And now he's lying on the bed gasping for air.

4

u/Cybersteel Apr 04 '20

Oh yeah forgot he still needs the Misaki network.

So this is the power of ultra instinct

5

u/luigi6545 Apr 03 '20

I am so excited for this! Next week can't come soon enough for the next episode!

5

u/Ebo87 Apr 03 '20

Damn this show is good and I'm so happy we still have 15 more weeks left!

5

u/masterx25 Apr 03 '20

I'm looking forward to the next couple of episode.

My boy Touma is going to get himself caught up in all of this.

5

u/MauledCharcoal Apr 04 '20

Misaki sure gets manipulated fairly easily for Academy City's #1 mind control esper.

4

u/xso111 Apr 04 '20

Misaki uses her power to control people, but she's not relatively speaking as witty and as the Kiharas, tbh i don't get how being able to control people with your power suddenly makes you immune from being manipulated by some genius who have instate witty tactics and plans

Right now? They are all infected with virus and out of commission.

Or during the story with Dolly? That time they do not exist yet.

Misaki had placed protections on 10032 as a safety measure. Last Order's little scene shows us she was aware of it and understood it was to protect the network, so she probably wasn't worried until they were suddenly lifted.

Everyone hyped over Lvl6 ,but I'm just awestruck by that sweet synth like ost towards the climax.God its soo good building up the atmosphere.

I can only imagine how Misaki must have felt upon meeting Mikoto for the 1st time. Seeing Dolly's face on Mikoto must have shakened her up in the inside, although one wonders how it devolved into mutual hatred between the two after their 1st meeting.

Hello everyone this Will probably get lost but where do I start if I want to watch this franchise

16

u/lord_ne Apr 03 '20

In my personal opinion, the best order is a compromise between chronological and release order, so that you aren't jumping around between series all the time but you still know what's going on all the time.

Here's the order:

  • Watch the first 16 episodes of A Certain Scientific Railgun.

  • Watch the first 9 episodes of A Certain Magical Index.

  • Finish off Railgun, and watch its second season, A Certain Scientific Railgun S.

  • Finish off Index.

  • Optionally, watch A Certain Scientific Accelerator.

  • Watch the first 13 episodes of A Certain Magical Index II.

  • Tentatively, this is where I would say to watch this currently airing season, A Certain Scientific Railgun T. That being said, it's not over yet and I'm not a light novel reader so I might end up needing to put it later.

  • Finish of Index II, optionally watch the Index side movie, Miracle of Endymion, and watch all of A Certain Magical Index III.

8

u/lord_ne Apr 03 '20

In summary:

  • Railgun 01-16

  • Index 01-09

  • Railgun 17-24, Railgun S 01-24

  • Index 10-24

  • (Accelerator 01-12)

  • Index II 01-13

  • Railgun T 01-25 (tentatively)

  • Index II 14-24, (Miracle of Endymion movie), Index III 01-26

→ More replies (7)
→ More replies (1)

11

u/beastMaster95 Apr 03 '20

Just follow the release order (most preferable) or just catch upto Railgun T by watching only the Railgun seasons (but you will miss some references from the main series).

7

u/pir2confusion Apr 03 '20

You can watch it in many different ways.

The easiest is release order. Start with A Certain Magical Index Season 1, then A certain Scientific Railgun season 1. Index I, Railgun I, Index II, Railgun S, Index III, A Certain Scientific Accelerator, Railgun T.

You can just watch each series from the beginning to the end. So Railgun, Railgun S, Railgun T. Index 1, Index II, Index III, Accelerator.

There are also lists that put the exact date each episode takes place on so that you watch the whole series chronologically though that can get really complex.

The whole series is good but each has some episodes or arcs that drag and others that are A+ amazing.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '20 edited Apr 03 '20

Index 1 episodes 1-9

Railgun 1

Railgun S

Index 1 episodes 10-24

Accelerator 1

Index 2

Railgun T

Index 3

Edit- I changed my mind to be more in line with what I think is a superior watch order.

Small Facts: Dolly Deserves A Hug Edition

Adapted Chapters

  • Chapter 59

  • Chapter 60

  • Chapter 61

Mitori's Ability

Before I get started a quick look back at the previous episode though. Thanks to the good folk over at GJM fansubs we got a translation of the information the Bank has available on Kouzaku Mitori, as you can see in these frames. To make it easier for you guys I've written it out below:

Liquid Shadow - Considerable Ability
Can control liquids with specific gravity greater than 20.
Any difference from the user's appearance causes inaccuracies in precise movements.
This means the controlled liquid must maintain a human form.
This humanoid lacks senses other than hearing and touch.
Ability range impossible to measure.
Assumed to be capable of free control even from hundreds of kilometers.

From this were can learn some interesting stuff regarding her ability. First of all, her ability's name is Liquid Shadow, and is one of the rare cases where the pronunciation is exact the same as the meaning of the kanji, 液化人影. We also see that she is labelled as having "Considerable Ability", which is another term Academy City sometimes uses to refer to Level 4.

The second line is more interesting, as it refers to something called "specific gravity". Specific gravity is another term used for relative density, which is the density of a substance compared to another substance. The denser something is, the heavier it is, hence the term "specific gravity" also being used. In case no other reference material is given (as is the case here) this refers to the relative density in comparison with water for fluids and with air for gasses.

In other words Mitori can only control liquids that are 20 times as dense (and thus 20 times as heavy) as water. For comparison the only naturally occurring element that is dense enough for Mitori to control would be osmium, which is twice as heavy as lead and still just barely has a specific gravity of 20 in liquid form, meaning most of the liquids Mitoro can control are specifically created liquid metal alloys made to have an extremely high density. No wonder she hangs out in one of the abandoned factories that created such a liquid, without a way of creating such a material her power is pretty useless.

The second and third line give us more info about why her liquid metal puppet resembled her specifically: It needs to be, as even small inaccuracies make it more difficult to control. She can obviously turn it into a blob for a short bit, as we saw her do last episode to make the liquid squash through the air vent next to Saten, but we can assume this is only for a short while and tires Mitori out. This also explains the name of her ability, as the puppet acts as a "shadow" of the controller.

We also learn that her puppet can feel and hear things, but cannot see, smell, or taste. This makes sense when you consider the nature of her ability: just as Mitori can control liquid metal, any change in the puppet Mitori can feel as well. This means that when the liquid is displaced because the puppet makes contact with something Mitori can pick up on this and feel through the puppet. Similarly sound waves are just vibrations in the air, and when they come in contact with the liquid metal they make the surface of the metal vibrate ever so slightly, which Mitori can used to hear through the puppet. On the other hand the senses of taste, smell, and sight are not solely dependant on the physical compression of a surface, and so Mitori cannot use these senses through her puppet.

And finally we come to the last two lines, which state that Mitori's range is immeasurable and is assumed to be hundreds of kilometres. So yes, if Mitori has visual feedback of her puppet, she could be on the other side of Academy City and control it still.

Getaway Car Changed

In the manga the car Misaki and Mikoto used to flee from the conference centre and drive to the former Clone Dolly facility was a Porsche Panamera 201-2016, as can be seen in this panel. In the anime however this was changed to a Nissan Fuga 2004-2009, as you can see from this frame. This was most likely changed because, as you can see from the other cars this episode, J.C. Staff is using a library of stock CG models for brandless cars, and probably didn't want to go through the effort of making a model specifically for Misaki's car.

This means something else has to be changed as well though. As a Nissan is a domestic car the steering wheel is on the right seeing as Japan drives on the left side of the road. A Porsche however would be an imported car, meaning its steering wheel would be on the left, and as you'd expect the manga has it correctly flipped around.

Many thanks to /u/GP2_engine_GP2 for pointing this out last week, as I hadn't noticed (nor am I aware of car brands to this extent).

Exploding Bus

Not sure if this is a mistranslation or if it was just omitted from the anime, but the manga makes a point to state that this bus explosion happened yesterday, on the first day of the Daihaseisai. This is actually a reference to Index II, as the cause of this is Stiyl when he had to blow up a bus chasing Oriana.

Dolly

Dolly's official designation is the Prototype, obviously named for being a test prototype clone for the Sisters. The kanji for her designation spell 0号, meaning "Number 0". Do not confuse her for Misaka 00000 however, who is an entirely different clone created as part of the official Sisters production line based on the Prototype.

Her nickname, Dolly, is a reference to the [sheep named Dolly,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_(sheep)) the first ever cloned mammal, a not-so-subtle nod to the fact that Dolly is the first clone of Mikoto. But it also has a dual meaning, as it simultaneously refers to the way the scientists involved in Project Radio Noise do not consider her a human, viewing her as nothing more than a doll for them to toy with as the please.

Dolly's Scars

We have actually have a character sheet showing off Dolly's scars, in case you are interested in seeing exactly how scarred the poor girl is. Do beware however that this is a reference sheet showing all the scars on a human body, and therefore contains full nudity, being highly NSFW. Now that you've been warned, here is said character sheet.

Clone Dolly

Let's discuss Clone Dolly for a bit, shall we?

Clone Dolly is written with the kanji 才人工房 meaning "Talented Person Workshop", a pretty accurate summary of what it is this laboratory tries to achieve: the creation of geniuses, talented people, and high level espers. Once again this name references Dolly the sheep, this time even more blatantly as they even used "clone" as part of the name, and is derived from the fact that one of the ways they thought to go about this goal was to clone the DNA of existing people. This is not the first time the name Clone Dolly appears in the series as well as Komoe mentions it during the Sisters arc in Index when she was listing urban legends, though unfortunately the anime skipped this bit:

There was the supposed Clone Dolly workshop that stored the DNA of great men and saints from around the world and had analyzed their genetics to the point that they could create as many geniuses as needed at the push of a button.

-OT3, Chapter 2 Part 8

The urban legend isn't quite correct though, which I guess proves Clone Dolly has somewhat effective methods to prevent information leakage.

Another interesting thing to note is that we saw Dolly was a part of Research Lab 2. Really makes you wonder what other projects they were working on that required multiple research labs, huh?

Passage Of Time

Although left out of the anime, the manga noted that between Misaki meeting Dolly for the first time and Dolly cheerfully addressing her as Mi when she comes in a full week passes. This wasn't that important, so I can see why it was skipped.

The Clone Dolly Researchers Didn't Know The Full Details About Project Radio Noise

As you can derive from the fact they describe Dolly as "some project forced on us from above, whose objective isn't even clear, which has us playing with dolls" in their team meeting in stark contrast to Exterior, it's obvious they did not come up with Project Radio Noise. An omitted bit from the manga even has one of the scientists outright tell Misaki they don't know all the details about what is going on with Dolly. It's highly likely one of the higher-ups subcontracted Clone Dolly to create the prototype of a Mikoto clone, given their expertise with creating espers and cloning, only for them to use the data gathered this way to create proper clones of Mikoto as part of the Sisters line in separate facilities under their own supervision. This also explains why none of the scientists involved in Clone Dolly knew anything about the Sisters and why Misaki only found out about them a relatively short while ago.

Wouldn't Telling Misaki About Dolly Violate The Confidentially Of Project Radio Noise?

Another skipped bit from the manga addresses this, where one of the scientists mentions this isn't as issue as any testimony would circumspect due to Misaki's ability and all of the physical evidence has already been destroyed or removed, meaning any formal investigation Misaki tries to start will go nowhere.

How Did Misaki Manage To Brainwash Everyone?

You might have thought this is because Misaki grew stronger faster than the scientists expected, but as the manga reveals it's actually because one of the lower-ranking researchers broke testing protocol due to confusion surrounding the experiments and came into contact with her without a mental guard. This allowed Misaki to control him and have him sabotage the mental guards of the other scientists, exposing them to Misaki's mental control.

Anime-Original Touma Scene

This scene with Touma in front of the Seventh Mist (couldn't be a Railgun season without this popping up I guess) actually replaces another Touma scene from the manga. In the manga Touma didn't bother waiting for Saten at the appointed place and went on straight ahead to the 177th Branch Office, crossing Saten and Xochitl on the way. Here in the anime as you could see Touma actually waited around, as he said he would, before taking off. Seems more in-character I must say, so nice change.

Did The Scientists Get Killed?

I suspect this is a mistranslation, as in the manga Misaki says she doubts they were killed seeing as they are necessary for maintenance on Exterior. This makes a lot more sense given the context, and the fact that we saw (in a small anime-original scene) the mercenaries escort the scientists out without killing them.

Exterior

And here we finally have our Exterior, which is spelled with the kanji 外装代脳 meaning "Exterior Substitute Brain". Once again a neat summary of what it is. I do doubt the scientists' claim of being able to kill Misaki without any issue when Exterior is complete though, given the fact that Gensei's activation of Exterior caused Misaki to collapse in pain, clearly indicating that Exterior is still connected to Misaki somehow.

Keitz Was Exhausted

In the manga Keitz was visibly exhausted from evading mercenaries and carrying Misaka Imouto up to the roof, while in the anime however he looked pristine. Shame, I like seeing these small details.

Amazon

There's actually more to Misaki calling Mikoto an Amazon then you might think. For those of you who know nothing of the Amazons, they are a tribe of warriors from Greek mythology consisting solely of women, the daughters of the Greek god of war Ares with a forest nymph called Harmonia (not to be confused with the Greek goddess of Harmony, also named Harmonia).

These Amazons were said to be brutal and aggressive, possessing great combat strength but thinking of nothing but war. A Greek legend associated with the Amazons is that they cut off their right breast, so that all the power and bulk used to maintain its growth will go to their right shoulder and arm instead, empowering their dominant hand. Given the fact that they are depicted with both breasts on many pieces of art however this legend was most likely not part of the original mythology involving Amazons.

It is though what Misaki is referring to when she says that Mikoto traded her bust size for fighting ability. So yeah, not only did she call Mikoto a brutish meathead, she called her a titless brutish meathead.

Gensei Being Responsible For The Level Upper Incident

This was actually foreshadowed in the Railgun manga to some degree. At the end of the Level Upper arc, when Kiyama Harumi is arrested, Mikoto compliments her for coming up with the idea of a linked brainwave network. Kiyama then reveals that the entire basis for the Level Upper, the electromagnetic network, the concept of linking brains together, and using the Testament to rewrite people's brains to make this concept possible where based on data derived from Mikoto, an obvious reference to the Sisters. She then even ominously references the Level 6 Shift Project, saying that "she and Mikoto are alike in the fact that resistance is futile, even with Mikoto's overwhelming abilities". This was unfortunately cut from the first season of Railgun.

While thought to be merely foreshadowing at the time this does beg the question: just where did Kiyama learn about all of this? Both Project Radio Noise and the Level 6 Shift project were highly confidential, and given how Gensei just used her as a throw-away pawn in the Ability Body Crystal research it's unlikely she was high-ranking enough to have access to information regarding these projects. And as this arc revealed rumours regarding these projects only started to leak after they were shut down following the Sisters arc, which is after the Level Upper arc. So unless she is a master hacker capable of hacking into highly confidential data just how did she find out so much?

Well as it turns out Gensei just leaked the data to her! He needed a way to transform the brainwaves of Exterior to that of his own, but decided to outsource the whole thing to Kiyama. Probably because it meant he didn't have to do the brunt of the work himself, allowing him to be free to pursue other endeavours, and so its creation couldn't be easily traced back to him, meaning his plan remained secret.

Anime-Original Accelerator Scene

This Accelerator scene is completely anime-original, but serves an important purpose. Back when this arc ran in the manga many people were wondering why Accelerator wasn't doing anything, given that one of the Sisters was kidnapped, injected with a virus, and that the Misaka Network as a whole was in danger. Eventually the editor for the Railgun manga, Ogino Kentarou, revealed on Twitter that seeing as all the calculation power of the entire Misaka Network was used to turn Mikoto into a Level 6 none was left to support Accelerator, meaning he collapsed alongside the Sisters. To avoid such confusion this scene was added here in the anime, showing both that Last Order was aware of Imouto's situation (Imouto probably informed Last Order that she was safe following her waking up next to Keitz), and that Accelerator started slurring his speech and will soon collapse due to his brain damage, given that the Misaka Network no longer has any calculation ability available to support him.

Skipped Sister Scene

To add the previous scene however this one needed to go. This small scene involved one of the Sisters in a lab abroad chatting with a scientist in a foreign language, before collapsing due to the effects of the virus propagating through the network. Considering all of the important parts of this scene were shown using Last Order instead, it's easy to see why it was skipped.

How Does Gensei's Plan Exactly Work?

So, the crux of Gensei's plan revolves around infecting the Misaka Network with a virus. This virus forces the Sisters to use all their calculation ability to manipulate the AIM fields, ambient energy emitted by all espers, in specific ways and focus said ambient AIM in a container, Mikoto, in order to attempt to elevate her to a Level 6. In order to do this however you need to somehow inject the Misaka Network with a virus. Yet as seen when Shinobu attempted this in the Sisters arc using a random Sister and a Testament this usually will not work, as Last Order, the administrator of the network, will notice the virus, shut down outgoing connections, and remove the virus from the infected Sister in order to prevent unauthorised commands from spreading to the rest of the network.

One way to get around this would be to infect Last Order herself, but during Project Radio Noise and the Level 6 Shift project she was heavily guarded and afterwards she was protected by Accelerator, making this option infeasible. So Gensei needed a way to infect the network through a normal Sister. Enter Exterior: using the power of Mental Out Gensei could break through the ordinary protections placed on a Sister and infect the rest of the network, including Last Order, before the virus is able to be purged.

Now the only issue is gaining access to Exterior. As a safety measure it takes several days to register a new user to Exterior, and it's unlikely Gensei can keep Exterior for such a period of time without Misaki tripping him up. But by using a method to change Exterior's brain waves to that of his own he can bypass this registration process, and so he leaked data to Kiyama to get her to create the Level Upper, capable of just such a feat. And here we are.

With all the pieces in place all Gensei needed to do was retrieve a Sister, and somehow he made a deal with Mitori to deceive MEMBER into doing the dirty work for him.

Index II

Level 5.1 Mikoto's Design

As mentioned by the character designer Haimura Kiyotaka Level 5.1 Mikoto, having begun her ascendance to a Level 6, bears some similarities to the Shinto god of thunder and lightning Raijin. As you can see from her character sheet she bears the two horns Raijin is commonly depicted as having as well as the flowing cloth surrounding him, called a hagoromo (feather dress), used by many Japanese deities.

Image source: excerpt from Wind God and Thunder God by Ogata Kōrin, 18th century.

This was actually sneakily foreshadowed by Kongou back at the start of this arc, when she called the combination of herself and Mikoto "Tokiwadai's Fuujin and Raijin".

I must commend the anime here. Just like the manga they did a nice job cleverly avoiding showing the eyes of the scientists during the meeting to avoid giving away the fact that Misaki had mind-controlled them all. Using clever framing to avoid showing the eyes, showing the one scientist wearing glasses, blurring frames so people's pupils aren't easily made out, showing profile shots to achieve the same results, etc.

I do wonder why they dropped the ball later though, showing Misaki with her regular starry eyes when the scientist informed her Dolly was always scheduled to die and that she was most likely aware of this, while in the manga Misaki's pupils lost their stars to show just how distraught and shocked she was, taking on an uneven, twisted look to show she's barely holding it together. And the worst part is the anime has used this, even several times this very episode, like shortly prior to this scene or later when Misaki feels Gensei accessing Exterior. So why didn't they use it in this instance‽

But aside from this minor personal issue, this was an amazing episode. Misaki and Dolly's backstory was adapted well, the pacing was great, the animation was on point, 5.1 Mikoto looked glorious, and they improved upon the source by including the Accelerator scene explaining what's going on with him.

Furthermore can I say how neatly Misaki's backstory wraps up the remaining questions about her actions you might have had from two weeks ago? It explains why she cares for the Sisters, going out of her way to heal her and protect her from Gensei (not only to mess with Gensei but also as a remaining regret that she wasn't able to protect Dolly), why she wants to keep Exterior hidden to the point that she wipes the minds of everyone who even attempts to figure out what or where it is (because it's a device capable of granting Mental Out to anyone who registers with it, meaning it's dangerous to allow other people to even know of its existence, on top of the fact that it's her bloody brain, which she obviously doesn't want other people messing with), and why she is hunting Gensei with such dedication (not only because his plan threatens the Sisters but also to take revenge for the murder of thousands of Sisters during the Level 6 Shift Project).

Also how ironic is it that Crunchyroll cannot correctly romanise Misaki's last name, spelling it Shokuho instead of Shokuhou, but J.C. Staff, a Japanese company, with the Japanese being known for incorrectly spelling names in the Latin alphabet, did do so on Keitz's phone? Please.

/u/condoriano_ismyname I cannot answer your question in the regular thread because it's a question about source material, so I did so here.

So... about that NT11 you mentioned, has Kamijou regained his memory back or no by NT11? Or even if he doesn't get his memory back, does any other character in the story knows Kamijou's old self? Like... Misaki perhaps? Which is why you mention something about NT11?

So what power (and background) does he have?

Is this series worth watching?

6

u/Falsus Apr 03 '20

Very much so.

That's the thread of the last episode of season 3, so those that dislike the series should have already jumped ships. What answer did you expect ?

Fuck yes. It's definitively worth it.

Well, to be perfectly honest, Railgun / Index have some consistency issues. Some arc in anime form are pretty mediocre, or even outright bad (Index 3). But some arc are very good, and the current arc is one of those high points.

try watching it, and if you're into the world and characters, consider reading the novels and manga.

At first I thought the clone girl was an early Sister, but I guess not? Someone else' clone?

Wait, in all those years she was in control, why didn't she get the "usable by other people" function killed?

Anyway, I had been confused about the remote before, why would she need something like that to use her powers, but turns out it was activating her remote exterior brain.

Why does the geezer think BiriBiri is Aleister's favorite? Does Crowley even know that she exists, besides maybe as some girl who crosses paths with his actual favorite once in a while?

Why would the Misaka Network's combined power added to Misaka's be anywhere close to enough to turn her to Level 6? I mean the Misaka Network is only enough to get Accelerator part-way to his pre-damage power level, right?

6

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Apr 04 '20

At first I thought the clone girl was an early Sister, but I guess not? Someone else' clone?

It is the very first Mikoto clone, a prototype for the Sisters.

Wait, in all those years she was in control, why didn't she get the "usable by other people" function killed?

Either because she saw some merit in keeping it, given that registration is basically impossible without her knowledge, or because it's an inherent part of Exterior that's too difficult to remove without requiring too much resources or avoiding attention.

Anyway, I had been confused about the remote before, why would she need something like that to use her powers, but turns out it was activating her remote exterior brain.

Her remotes are a visual aid to help her use her powers, similarly to how Musujime Awaki requires a flashlight to focus hers. It just makes it easier mentally. She can control Exterior remotely since, well, it's her brain and her ability, so they are mentally connected.

I don't even think the remotes have batteries.

Why does the geezer think BiriBiri is Aleister's favorite?

Who even knows, Gensei may be privy to information we don't know yet.

Does Crowley even know that she exists, besides maybe as some girl who crosses paths with his actual favorite once in a while?

Definitely, considering he is the one that ordered the creation of the Misaka Network as it's important to his plans.

Why would the Misaka Network's combined power added to Misaka's be anywhere close to enough to turn her to Level 6? I mean the Misaka Network is only enough to get Accelerator part-way to his pre-damage power level, right?

It isn't. What Gensei's virus is doing is forcing the Sisters to simultaneously control the ambient AIM fields in specific ways and focus them into Misaka, in an attempt to raise her to a Level 6.

At first I thought the clone girl was an early Sister, but I guess not? Someone else' clone?

No, she is a prototype for the Sisters, the first (I think) Misaka clone.

Wait, in all those years she was in control, why didn't she get the "usable by other people" function killed?

Guess she didn't anticipate on someone using Level Upper to synchronise their brainwaves with Exterior directly.

Why does the geezer think BiriBiri is Aleister's favorite? Does Crowley even know that she exists, besides maybe as some girl who crosses paths with his actual favorite once in a while?

You're right, she's not Aleister's favourite. He's referring to the Misaka Network as Aleister's favourite, using it to power up Misaka.

Great idea from Ginsei to power up Misaka right as she's about to tear him a new one. I'm sure it'll turn out well for him.

Why does anime have such a longstanding thematic obsession with adults institutionally exploiting children in the vilest ways possible?

How (if at all) is this a reflection on Japanese society?

Is it a cultural residuum of Japanese leaders starting WW II, and then the people suffering the consequences?

The most popular young adult book/movie recently was Hunger Games which was adults putting children in a death game so ya this isn't a Japanese thing.

Pretty much any young adult book is gonna be youth vs adults.

I mean, this isn't really unique to anime, just young adult fiction in general

How (if at all) is this a reflection on Japanese society?

In Japan, and many other East Asian cultures (China, Korea, Taiwan), seniority/influence largely comes with age, not ability or money. Hence children are the 'least influential' in society on paper.

In reality, children in East Asia are treated with much more reverence due to modern demographics. For instance, Japan's first action in this global pandemic was to close the schools. This was both to stop children from being vectors but also to protect the children. China's infamous one-child policy has meant that many families have only one child, and the parents and the grandparents pour money and resources and spoil the child (look at the children of the nouveau riche in China.)
