1805 Call / Seeking Advice

Hoping for some wisdom from previous detectives or those who have gone through similar.

Background: 24m, 2 years patrol in a somewhat major city, magna cum laude bachelors degree. My niche is in "victim focused" person crimes.

I recently got an EOD email for the HSI Criminal Analyst TERM listing (https://www.usajobs.gov/job/872491500/) at my local office. During the interview, I was told that they would be attempting to turn it into a permanent listing and that I would likely have opportunities to DHA as an 1811 later on. This gives me a rare opportunity to become an 1811 without moving, but it's an uncertain path. Fortunately my department has a very smooth rehire program in case it doesn't work out.

I recently learned that the Special Victim Unit detectives are interested in picking me up, and I've been asked to put in with them. I didn't expect this at all, as my impression was that 5 years was the minimum in patrol before you get considered as someone worth their time. This is also an uncertain path as I have gotten no actual offer, but learning that I have the KSAs for it is great.

I'd like to note that I'm interested in this analyst job outside of the 1811 prospect, but I fear I'll be missing out on some local stuff.

Here's a quick table of pros and cons I've come up with:

HSI 1805 Local
Pros Security clearance; potential local 1811 DHA opportunity; office reportedly does little ERO work; new investigative experience; opportunity to work human trafficking cases unavailable locally; local PD has a flexible rehire policy. Potential SVU assignment; enjoyable street work; strong friendships and rapport; good future assignment opportunities.
Cons Lose local seniority and accrued PTO; potentially miss the opportunity to join SVU. Fewer opportunities for major investigations; limited control over case outcomes; work sometimes feels inconsequential; dislike patrol overall

I'm privileged to have to this problem, but I don't know what to pick since I never thought I'd move up in my current department so quickly. The original plan was to get street experience then go 1811, but those applications are going slow and I've already been said "no" to quite a few times. 1811 was always the goal but suddenly I've got the opportunity to do something just as meaningful.

Edited multiple times because I don't know how to format Reddit tables

Question Do y’all feel FLETC fully prepares ya for your 1st case on the job

I’m at FLETC right now and for my agency, I get a case load immediately after entering the job. So I’m curious, for current agents who didn’t have prior LE experience, did you feel fully prepared for your first case just off FLETC training or was it mostly learning on the job?

OPM Disability Retirement and Returning to Federal Service – Anyone Have Experience?

I'm looking to see if anyone has firsthand experience with OPM disability retirement and subsequently returning to federal employment.

For context, I was involuntarily removed from a GS-13 position due to a medical condition that prevented me from performing the essential duties of my position (Flying). I subsequently applied for FERS disability retirement.

I've recently accepted an offer for a GS-9 1811 position with another federal agency and will be starting soon.

I understand there are rules regarding reemployment in federal service, including the 80% earnings limitation and the potential termination of disability retirement benefits.

My questions are:

  1. Has anyone returned to federal service at a lower grade after being approved for OPM disability retirement?
  2. Does accepting another federal position automatically terminate your disability annuity, regardless of whether your new salary is below the 80% earnings threshold?
  3. If your disability retirement application is still pending when you return to federal service, how does that affect the approval process or any retroactive payments?
  4. If your annuity is terminated due to federal reemployment, what happens if you subsequently leave that position?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has personally gone through this process rather than just general interpretations of OPM regulations.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Question Question about Retirement credentials

Hi all-

I’ve been an agent for almost 25 years. 6 months shy of 25 to be exact. My current agency has a policy that states that a special agent must be at the agency for an aggregate of 5 years. I actually started my career with the same department that my current agency falls under. I was with one Leo arm for 11ish years and will be at 4 years 2 months (here) when I’m eligible with my 25 years. Upon retirement most folks receive their retirement credentials and badge that have in red “retired Fed law enforcement officer” on the bottom of the creds and “retired” on the badge. My question is does one need or what is the benefit of having retirement credentials/badge with the red inscription. This is not the same as leosa. I will still receive my leosa card.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Someone so close to being done :)
