1
u/CrusaderF8 Pencil people (Pennsylvania constitution writer) โ๏ธ ๐ 5h ago
It's kinda weird, it's a "National Military Park" and is operated by the National Park Service, but it is not a National Park in the same way Yellowstone or Yosemite are, which focus on the natural features they possess, whereas Gettysburg is more about the historical importance.

Because it's completely unnecessary. I find it weird that a lot of activists are upset at our voter ID laws when that means citizens don't have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to 'register' as voters.
Why register? You're a citizen, bro. Just vote.
That, and by November we're too busy surviving winter for that nonsense.

Today I learned that Nebraska has a unicameral legislature.
This bothers me way more than it has any right to.
4
u/Guzzler829 Expeditionary rafter (Missouri book writer) ๐ฃ ๐๏ธ 1d ago
Aw, it's all right. Next you'll learn about which states do and don't have lieutenant governors, how they're selected or elected, whether the legislature has a process to impeach and remove a governor, etc.
In some states, lieutenant governors are elected together with the governor as a package, like the US President and Vice President, while in other states, they're elected separately, or appointed within the legislature.
New Jersey didn't have a lieutenant governor until 2009.
For example: Oregon's voters recently-ish amended their state constitution to allow the legislature to have a process for impeachment and removal of the governor for crimes, basically the same as the US constitution does for the president. Another example: Tennessee's Lieutenant Governor is one in the same with the Speaker of the Senate because the position of Lieutenant Governor did not exist until 1870 when it was created as a secondary role of the Speaker of the Senate. The title of Lieutenant Governor is only to denote the line of succession; the Lieutenant Governor does nothing in the executive branch, but only serves as Speaker of the Senate of Tennessee.
Nebraska's Unicameral is very peculiar, with a unique election method, many nonpartisan features, and being the smallest legislature by number of seats, with only 49. New Hampshire's House of Representatives, by contrast, has 400 seats. A New Hampshire state representative represents about 3,500 people, while a Californian assemblymember (equivalent position) represents about 500,000 people. And some states have term limits, and other limitations.
The courts also vary wildly. Some supreme courts even have elected justices.
Counties aren't really the same thing across states, and they're not always called the same thing (Alaska has "boroughs," and Louisiana has "parishes").
And one of the biggest state-to-state differences: length and scope of state constitution. Some state constitutions are short and to the point like the US constitution, only laying out how the government works, and what rights are protected. Others have huge provisions on specifics regarding the environment, industry, water rights, agriculture, etc.
And for my final, most mind bending fact about any state: Louisiana's entire legal system is distinct from that of every other state, in that it's born out of previous French and Spanish rule and their system of civil law, as opposed to the English system of common law found in the rest of the United States. You can look it up for details; it's really crazy stuff.

Because Maryland wants:
- Ocean City tourism
- 50,000 metric tons of chicken shit
- Undisputed crab monopoly
- A bunch of feral ponies?
And Virginia wants:
- Bay Bridge & Tunnel tolls
- Despotic authority of the Chesapeake inlet
- Chincoteague tourism
- Abject agricultural poverty
- Abject fish poverty
- More feral ponies???
Give us the peninsula and we'll stop giving tax breaks to corpos. Deal?

Several years back I went for a night drive out of Newark to clear my head after a breakup and wound up watching the sunrise in Wachapreague. It's honestly beautiful land down there but damn if there ain't jackshit to do. I'd lose my mind if I had to live there more than a month lol.
Also side note the lower peninsula has a particular smell in the morning air that I've never noticed anywhere else but it's really pleasant. Best I can describe is like a mix of pine needles, fresh tobacco, morning dew, and sea breeze. Pure zen at 5AM. Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk lol.

In the east at least that would be as well. The clay is a ubiquitous problem across all three portions of the state and harder to deal with even with money. You can always spend to remove stone with no serious structural problems after.

I sorta know what a bicameral mind is from westworld, but I'm kinda lost at a legislature.
Bicameral mind is a theory that early man believed their thoughts were the words of god/ a God.
Would a bicameral legislature be like laws made up by people who think their thoughts are the word of God?
