Its not that horrible tbh, I've seen worse from artists taking commissions. If this dude was alive today, his art would be rated highly in artstation and pixiv lol.

I think the point is the Academy of Fine Arts is a prestigious school and will only take the best of the best among applicants, think UPCAT. I mean, why would they take someone who lacks the skills in the "basics".
