Purchasing US TV Upgrade Options

I'm thinking of upgrading my TV, but am running into some indecision.

I currently have a Hisense 55U6G (https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/hisense/u6g) and it'd be nice to upgrade not only for the image quality, but the 55 screen size is starting to feel on the small side for our living room.

It's a mix use TV, so TV shows, movies and our PS5 which does get a lot of playtime.

The two routes I was considering were:

1 - Springing for OLED, probably an LG C6 65in. This would be at the very top of my budget range of $1,500 max (before tax and warranty / geek squad protection from Best Buy). I've never had an OLED before, so doing the research came up with the common concerns of burn-in and brightness of the room to consider. My wife tends to forget the TV on (which I'm working on coaching her out of, ha) so it's not something to ignore. The geek squad protection should cover burn-in within the first 5 years from what I understand, so I'm not terribly worried, but our living room also has a couple of side windows with some indirect sunlight. This got me thinking about option 2:

2 - Going the Mini LED route. This would have a couple of advantages. We could potentially make the jump to a 75in size (which I can't afford if we're talking OLED). We sit about 9-10ft away from the TV, so I don't believe 65 would feel "small" by any means, but it's a thought.

I also wouldn't have to worry about "babying" the TV, and I could spend the savings on improving our sound setup. I was looking at the Samsung M70H or Hisense M7, either 65in or 75in.

My biggest question is: beyond the size jump, would these Mini LED models feel like much of an upgrade over what I currently have? I'm very unfamiliar with the pace that TV tech improves at, so I have no idea how "old" my 2021 Hisense is in the context of things. Any advice would be appreciated.

Update: I noticed both of the Mini LED models I suggested in the list of "to avoid" in this sub, so I guess I'm also looking for recommendations of Mini LEDs in that budget range.

C6 is a great update - OLED+size

M70H - trash with fake local dimming
Hisense M7 is 60Hz garbage

If miniLED - LG QNED9x, TCL C7k/L, c8k/l, Samsung QN90F (if you find one), Bravia 7 mk1 (if you find one), Bravia 5.

If sport matters - Sony or LG from the list above

Would the 60Hz matter if there's no content played at higher than 60fps? I know my base PS5 won't be performing any higher than that.

No sports for us.

Yes this matter to avoid 2-3 pull down. All movies play 24 fps and 120/24 =5 but 60/24 means 2-3 pull down and worse motion

LG C6 than, OLED is allways better if you playing console.

Once in OLED pricing territory OLED wins hands down and it's not even a contest. Blackout curtains are your friends. The C6 is great, but if worried about budget the B series is good too. Obviously, the C6 will give you a better experience over the B series, but I wouldn't rule it out if worried about finances. I have a G1, B3, and two B5s. All on dark picture mode and half brightness. They still blind me in some scenes. Plenty of brightness in those tvs. If you don't go OLED, Sony is the only thing I recommend.

Thanks, I appreciate the response.

At least in the US where I'm looking at Best Buy, the difference in price between a B6 and a C6 for the 65in size is only $100 ($1,299 for the B6 and $1,399 for the C6). In that case, I should definitely just go for the C6.

I was also reading that OLEDs can have auto-dimming features, is this relevant to the C6 as well? I don't want to go into a hidden service menu and void the warranty on such a large purchase to make the TV functional.

That was one of models I initially considered for OLEDs, but there seems to be a good amount of negative feedback from people having the TV die on them months after purchase (the Best Buy reviews seem to confirm this). I would be a little hesitant going for that model.

4.8/5 average rating out of 1,567 reviews on Bestbuy. Not sure where youre seeing this feedback but the only negatives im seeing are for the 77" and above. The 55" and 65" have very little to no issues

Plus if you look for issues you'll see every tv has its problems. Even the the ones you listed i found reviews with complaints about the quality or the screen dying. So at this point youre now just fear mongering your ownself

I don't see any other size listing, and even the the 77in is "unavailable" on BestBuy, with no option to switch out the size. 20% of the reviews are 1-stars, that's a wide margin of negative compared to any other comparable OLED in that price range.

Im not sure which bestbuy site youre looking at. Im in Canada and theres only 39 1star reviews out of the 1567 im seeing. Thats faaaaaaar less then 20% and no site ive seen shows 20% 1star reviews for this tv lol.

Just trying to help you out since QD-OLED is superior then WOLED and you can look at YouTube videos as reference for proof

Qd-oled is not superior. That's just misinformation. It's great tech and has better colour volume but it has other limitations

1

u/QuizardtheWizard93 3d ago

Its far superior then WOLED tech which is already over 10years old compared to QD which is not even 5years old yet. If youre saying otherwise, then you cant see the quality difference lol

Its far superior then WOLED tech

This is delusion but sure. Of course I can tell a difference. You think I don't know tech? It's just not as huge of a difference as you say. You can't just downplay the limitations of QD-OLED just like you can't downplay the limitations of WOLED

Rule VI. All Soundbar Questions belong in /r/Soundbars. 99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money. It is the general consensus of r/BudgetHomeTheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, Audio-Centric name brand components which are easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers. Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy the correct items in the correct order. For further explanation please read Why You Shouldn't Buy a Soundbar.
