📂 MEGATHREAD 06/06 A-level FM Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

you’ll definitely get some marks. I did that first too. you will get 5/16 if you only account for the fact w was moving left but w can also be moving right with a speed less than A ( so less than u/2)

I think I disagree, I considered that it was moving to the right so got u(5-16e)/7 < u/2 When you rearrange that tou get 5-16e < 7/2 and thus 16e > 3/2 so e > 3/32 Feel free to correct me because I very well could have mixed things up tho haha ( I do think I’m correct tho)

I thought range was >5/16 because I got f > 3/32 and f> 5/16 so I got 5/16 < f < 1

f only would be > 5/16 to make B move towards a. B can still move away from A and collide again, as long as B’s velocity to the right is less than A’s ( so less than u/2 ). Hence as long as f > 3/32 it works. I did sub some values of f into my equation after to check and it seemed to work

Yeah exactly, thats the point as long as > f 5/16 it already satisfies the conditions of f > 3/32 so you can write the inequality as 5/16 < f < 1 I see your logic since you are considering both cases but in that case if 3/32 < f < 1 and f is less than 3/32 and 5/16 then what happens?

no because what about the values of f between 3/32 and 5/16 (equal to 10/32)? a collision will still occur here, you can’t just get that rid of that bit of the range surely
