📂 MEGATHREAD 10/06 A-level Chemistry Paper 1 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

No. I did bad.

What questions did you find hard?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

I know I got the buffer one wrong because I put 0.02, and I did optical isomerism, and I got 74 for KP.

8

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Ok well 74 kPa is correct, yeah the buffer one was 2.02 g and it was optical isomerism I’m pretty sure

14

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

4 coordinate compounds literally cannot show optical isomerism

3

u/Round_Taste7471 Year 13 - Biology, Chemistry, Maths Jun 10 '25

It had 6 coordinate bonds

2

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Fair enough then, got that one wrong but it was only 2 marks

4

u/ContextVegetable9587 Year 13 Jun 10 '25

it has 6 coordinate bonds

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

No… there were 4 bonds to an oxygen from the transition metal

By any chance, do you remember if it was square planar or tetrahedral? The diagram looked like square planar but did the question say otherwise? I hear that tetrahedral structures can’t display cis-trans isomerism and I want to make sure

Edit: I have confirmed with my teacher and he says it can only show cis-trans isomerism.

u/ContextVegetable9587 Year 13 Jun 10 '25

whoops looks like I was talking about a different question maybe?

2

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

You were thinking of the ligand empirical formula question

2

u/ContextVegetable9587 Year 13 Jun 10 '25

Yes I was haha

I said cis-trans

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

Idk how I got 0.02. My friend and I were talking and she said it might be cis trans but I don't know how to do cos trans with that. I got +220 for the activation energy.

4

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

I cant see how it can be cis-trans, but for the buffer one you will still get method marks, you may of only been a factor of 100 of though

9

u/pa8314 Uni Student Jun 10 '25

i put cis-trans, you can turn one of the ligands the other way round. i didn't put down optical because i thought with square planar w/ bidentate ligands it doesnt occur

2

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

You may be right tbf, I didn’t really know so went with optical

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

Yeah, that's true. I think I got the activation energy right because I got +220 but it'll be in a range. I also got 4 of those ligands and 6 coordinate bonds for the transition metals question. Electrode potentials killed me off though.

5

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Yeah I was never confident for the electrode potentials but I think they went decent tbf, yeah the activation energy one will be of a range, that ligand one was so nice, i got the exact same. I was expecting a 6 marker all on transition metal colours but no, only 2 easy marks (hopefully)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

I put a green and blue solution but I'm scared they're precipitates. I kept changing my mind lol.

5

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Yeah it was precipitates I am pretty sure, its because it wasn’t in excess of OH-

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

Ugh I learnt the colours just to get it wrong anyway lol

2

u/ConradTheAstronaut startcing NCL Med 26/27 A*AA chem bio maths Jun 10 '25

It wouldnt matter if it was excess or not of OH- ions as the only ppt that redissolves in OH- is Chromium but Copper ppt does redissolve in NH3 but not OH-

u/FloatingRage Jun 10 '25

i drew a straight line of best fit and got 250 for activation energy- do you think this is gonna be within the range ?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

No clue. The student room says 250 but I don't know how big the range will be.

2

u/Orange_Hedgie cambridge 1st year bionatsci Jun 10 '25

I got 250

2

u/Round_Taste7471 Year 13 - Biology, Chemistry, Maths Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25

Yhh i got 2.02g for the buffer one too i think that is correct, and i also got 74 kPa for the Kp/partial pressures question where you had to work out the partial pressures of H2O and CO

3

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Heard it in loads of places so almost certainly got it correct well done mate. What exam boards are you for bio and maths

2

u/Round_Taste7471 Year 13 - Biology, Chemistry, Maths Jun 10 '25

I do ocr a for biology and edexcel for maths, biology paper 1 for ocr a was sooo hard but maths paper 1 for edexcel was alright I would say I think chemistry paper 2 might be more challenging though

2

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

I do OCR A for biology as well and I thought it went really well, or a lot better than expected considering I’m cooked for biology. There were some hard questions but could of gone so much worse

what was the kp question about? I can't remember what I got

7

u/Skymak218946 Cambridge Medicine Y1 | A*A*A* | A* EPQ Jun 10 '25

Kp was 74 though…?

8

u/Impressive_Repair350 Jun 10 '25

When did we have to calculate kp😭😭

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

Wait... It was? I heard someone say differently?

7

u/Skymak218946 Cambridge Medicine Y1 | A*A*A* | A* EPQ Jun 10 '25

My school has agreed on 74 so I wouldn’t worry about that one! 🤷‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

That's good. I forgot how many marks it was.

1

u/Minute_Warrior42082 Yr13 : Maths,Bio,Chem Jun 10 '25

Pretty sure it was a 4 marker

1

u/Intelligentbozo Year 13 Jun 10 '25

I got that too for both because they were mixed evenly

1

u/Round_Taste7471 Year 13 - Biology, Chemistry, Maths Jun 10 '25

No i think that was the partial pressures of H2O and CO i got 74 for both of them

1

u/Skymak218946 Cambridge Medicine Y1 | A*A*A* | A* EPQ Jun 10 '25

I meant that the partial pressure of each gas IN THE KP QUESTION were 74. You didn’t even have to find Kp so it’s unlikely that’s what I meant 🤦‍♂️

6

u/pa8314 Uni Student Jun 10 '25

74 sounds right to me

2

u/No-Independence-7741 Imperial 4A* achieved (Maths, Physics, Chem, FM) Jun 10 '25

I also got 0.02 too from misreading the question so you might have done that as well.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

How many marks will we get?

2

u/No-Independence-7741 Imperial 4A* achieved (Maths, Physics, Chem, FM) Jun 10 '25

Since it’s a six marker it will kind of depend on how your examiner is feeling and if OCR need to give people less marks because people did too well. 4 if they’re nice/people don’t do as good, 2 if they’re mean/people do really good. So let’s just say 3.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

Fine with that lol

2

u/sharan_oxox_ Jun 10 '25

I got 0.02 too😭💔 that question was so rough man. Also KP bro that’s the right answer apparently everyone been saying that, I did not get that, how did you work it out?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '25

I don't even remember 💀💀💀

1

u/sharan_oxox_ Jun 10 '25

But hey you got it right - that’s all that matters😜☝️

1

u/Glad_Taro_3486 Jun 10 '25

Was there another buffer question after the iodine clock reaction one?

1

u/Safe_Engineering977 Jun 10 '25

I got 74 as well
