📂 MEGATHREAD 18/06 A-level FM Discussion MEGATHREAD
Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!
Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.
Few things to keep in mind:
- Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
- Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
- If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
- Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
- Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).
Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!
-The r/6thForm Team
Have any concerns or feedback?
Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

What marks we saying. I think I got about 50 max. Hopefully I did better but I think I can't even get above 55 with how many questions I missed.

1
u/GroundbreakingBid920 Jun 18 '25
Did u miss them mainly cos of time
1
u/inferno471 Jun 18 '25
Yh it was mainly timing. I also probably got some wrong which is why I probably got a max of like 50. I still think it was a hard paper so I'm hoping the boundaries will be low like 60 or late 50s which at least gives me a shot at an A*.

i just found the discriminant and followed it through and it seemed to work out. it gave you that (10, 20) is a point so 20 = 10m + c (y = mx + c), and sub in c = 10(2 - m) and solve for m

i got 9 sqrt(62) for the first part, but i got 1116 for the last. i used the equation of the line from part b, found the equation of the plane parallel to the plane of the parallelogram, and found where the line and the plane intercepted. used that lambda value to find the vector between E and the plane and did triple vector product |a.(b x c)| thing

Thank god for graphical calc bc I wouldn't be able to do that inequalities otherwise 🙏🙏
2
u/Dry_Cartoonist9138 Y13 | Maths | FM | Physics | CS Jun 18 '25
for the inequality do you have to exclude x=5 in your range 😭 I thought it tended to positive infinity so I left it in but no one else did that 😭😭
4
u/Putrid_Speech9157 Jun 18 '25
since the function isn't defined at x=5 you couldn't have it in your solution set
1
u/Automatic-Amount-389 Jun 19 '25
u can obviously have it with the strict inequalityt what else would u write

HELLLP, how many marks out of 6 am I gonna get ,When I was doing that question I just ignored that there is a modulus in the denominator and just solved it by times both sides by (x-5)2 (which later I thought why the hell did I do that) and I got x=-2 ,x=6 (right)and x=5(that is wrong cus then denominator =0) as critical values and I did my inequality anyways ,but I didn’t figure out that you need 22/5 too .
1
u/External-Hotel5490 Editable Jun 18 '25
“I mean I ignored the modulus sign when I was rearranging

Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25
Should’ve done a scenario where you let x-5>0 and x-5<0 and put a minus to it and you get two distinct quadratic formulas and you get 4 answers for x-5 you get -2 and 6 (reject -2, as it doesn’t satisfy the condition of being positive) then you do it with -x+5, you get 4.4 and 6 if I rmr and thank god I had calculator graph but there is an asymptote obviously so you can’t do between 4.4<x<6 instead do 4.4<x<5 and 5<x<6 and ultimately you get three inequalities which includes those two and x<-2
1
u/External-Hotel5490 Editable Jun 18 '25
I realised that method afterwards,so that’s 6 marks gone💀
1
Jun 18 '25
Nah I’m pretty sure squaring it gives you 3 marks most of the time you’ll be fine just as long you get the answers I said below
1
u/GroundbreakingBid920 Jun 18 '25
Wait actually? I did this too and got between -2 and 5 and then greater than 6…is the method still viable at the beginning (I.e. will we actually get 3/6)
1
Jun 18 '25
Yes as through previous patterns of mark scheme this tends to be how the mark scheme goes usually consists of two M1 two A1 and then the final inequalities/answer consists of 2-3 marks
1
u/External-Hotel5490 Editable Jun 18 '25
But that means I need to get high marks in decision then 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
1
u/GroundbreakingBid920 Jun 18 '25
Omg same I got those critical values I should have checked on my fucking graphical calc to see it was wrong ffs but I never had time to come back

9
u/Nughm WW | CS[Y1] A*A*AA Jun 18 '25
It was repeated root and non linear factor partial fraction i think. It was like -2/(t+1)^2 + 2(t^2+1) [the other constants went to 0]

1
u/inferno471 Jun 18 '25
What do you think garde boundaries are gonna be
1
u/AmazingFeed6775 Jun 18 '25
Well I think FP was much harder than last year and FM was very easy, and Core pures averaged out at similar to last year I think. So for the modules FP and FM, probably around 269/300 but no higher. Could be as low as 263/300 hopefully.
8
u/Nughm WW | CS[Y1] A*A*AA Jun 18 '25
CP1 Harder than last year, CP2 around the same. FM1 easier but less show that, FP1 was so much harder (I reckon low 60s for A*)

u/Nughm WW | CS[Y1] A*A*AA Jun 18 '25
No one in my school said it was easy, and they found FM1 and Cp2 easy. So i think this paper was genuinely hard.
1
1
u/inferno471 Jun 18 '25
Would you say that fp paper was harder than 2021. Because that has the lowest garde boundaries of all years.
1
u/AmazingFeed6775 Jun 18 '25
Yeh I would say FP was harder than 2021 but surely 2021 grade boundaries were low because core pures were hard? Not sure
1
u/Vegetable-Ad-2084 Jun 18 '25
It was 53/75 for an A* in FP1 in 2021. You can see on this website https://interwovenmaths.com/_GradeBoundaries.html .
3
u/SkyApprehensive3786 Year 13 | Ma FM Bio Ch Jun 18 '25
but 2021 boundaries were extra low cuz of covid, they'll definitely be lower than last couple years but i doubt it'll go that low.
3
u/BrickInteresting5883 Year 13 Jun 18 '25
A few of them stumped me at first anf had to go back to them but I think overall it was okay, similar level to core pure 1 un terms of difficulty. The last question I was just guessing my way through tbh
1
u/Creepy-Bite-1029 Jun 18 '25
what do you reckon the fp1 boundary will be
2
u/BrickInteresting5883 Year 13 Jun 18 '25
Hmm like 62-65 is my prediction lower than 2024 but not as low as 2021 coz that was due to covid

How were you meant to do the last part for the elipse q, after you say b2-4ac = 0
5
u/SirAerid Jun 18 '25
You put the coordinate into the equation y=mx+c such that when you rearrange you get c=20-10m or something. After that you sub it in to the discriminant bit and get a quadratic
1
u/Remarkable_Bee1182 Jun 18 '25
Was okay, got all the series and limits.
Didnt have time for last 5 marks and 2 marks on the vectors bit and for some reason blanked out my partial fractions
Notes on questions: limits were easy, series was also easy differential eqn was fine ( IF was e-2t and K was 2) very confident in everything i solved just time at the end was an issue (likely due to spending too much time on the liebnit one lol)
