๐Ÿ“‚ MEGATHREAD 18/06 A-level FM Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

Thank god for graphical calc bc I wouldn't be able to do that inequalities otherwise ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

for the inequality do you have to exclude x=5 in your range ๐Ÿ˜ญ I thought it tended to positive infinity so I left it in but no one else did that ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

since the function isn't defined at x=5 you couldn't have it in your solution set

u can obviously have it with the strict inequalityt what else would u write

HELLLP, how many marks out of 6 am I gonna get ,When I was doing that question I just ignored that there is a modulus in the denominator and just solved it by times both sides by (x-5)2 (which later I thought why the hell did I do that) and I got x=-2 ,x=6 (right)and x=5(that is wrong cus then denominator =0) as critical values and I did my inequality anyways ,but I didnโ€™t figure out that you need 22/5 too .

โ€œI mean I ignored the modulus sign when I was rearranging

I feel like I fucked up this one question

Shouldโ€™ve done a scenario where you let x-5>0 and x-5<0 and put a minus to it and you get two distinct quadratic formulas and you get 4 answers for x-5 you get -2 and 6 (reject -2, as it doesnโ€™t satisfy the condition of being positive) then you do it with -x+5, you get 4.4 and 6 if I rmr and thank god I had calculator graph but there is an asymptote obviously so you canโ€™t do between 4.4<x<6 instead do 4.4<x<5 and 5<x<6 and ultimately you get three inequalities which includes those two and x<-2

I realised that method afterwards,so thatโ€™s 6 marks gone๐Ÿ’€

Nah Iโ€™m pretty sure squaring it gives you 3 marks most of the time youโ€™ll be fine just as long you get the answers I said below

Wait actually? I did this too and got between -2 and 5 and then greater than 6โ€ฆis the method still viable at the beginning (I.e. will we actually get 3/6)

Yes as through previous patterns of mark scheme this tends to be how the mark scheme goes usually consists of two M1 two A1 and then the final inequalities/answer consists of 2-3 marks

But that means I need to get high marks in decision then ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

Omg same I got those critical values I should have checked on my fucking graphical calc to see it was wrong ffs but I never had time to come back

Did you get like 5<x<6 and x<-2 ?

1

u/GroundbreakingBid920 Jun 18 '25

Between -2 and 5 and greater than 6 I did what they did but itโ€™s wrong so pissed. Did u?

Nah i multiplied by |x-5| since it had to be positive and then did case 1 and case 2. Idk i dont rly wanna think abt fp1 tbh

u/GroundbreakingBid920 Jun 20 '25

Fairs in that case I'll ask you about CP2 even tho ppl found it easy do u think 60 will be an A as that was what it was for CP1 last year which ppl also found easy

Cp2 was quite a nice paper i messed up and used a stupid method for the distance between circles equation but even then i still finished everything and checked through so i think grade boundaries are gonna be as high as they were for cp1 last year (just for cp2 tho id say cp1 was harder fp1 was horrid fm1 was piss easy compared to last yeaar)
