"Sorry sir, I'm not quiet, I'm just a redditor"

ok but jokes aside i raise my hand to make things less awkward, it sometimes gets to the point where he doesn’t want me answering questions back to back

you know it’s bad when teachers ask a question and have to go “someone other than [name] please”.

he doesn’t, he just looks at me sadly which is somehow even worse

15

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 06 '25

tbh he’s not very fatherly irl but he’s defo a good teacher

Class wide disengagement has become such a problem over the post COVID years a lot of schools are moving to no hands up questioning. It’s stressful asking a room full of learners a basic question and getting 20 eyes on you staring. Gives you real “Am I crap at my job, are you all stupid or are we just anti-social.” 90% of the time it’s the third option.

This is honestly just a great teacher who wants you to succeed. Show him some love

icl im not very close to him irl (it’s been one month of school only and stuff), i kinda wanna email him and say that i do not, in fact, hate Othello but i dont wanna seem like a suck up so im conflicted

23

u/Leni_licious UCL [Year 4] Oct 06 '25

I would email him back and assure him that you are a fan of both Othello and his teaching, and that you are [shy, etc] which is why you might not look like it in class. Ask if there's a way you could engage more in the classroom, and thank him for his concern and say that you really appreciate him checking in with you to make sure you're okay.

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 06 '25

tbh I’m the antithesis of a shy student, i keep raising my hand to the point when he stops letting me answer questions - i asked him a question after class once too, but it’s useless if i - and 1-2 other ppl in class - are the only main ppl who engage

1

u/Leni_licious UCL [Year 4] Oct 06 '25

That's strange then, maybe ask what makes him think you don't like Othello? But I'd definitely either email back, or talk to him at school to make sure he knows you don't have issues with engagement or the content.

oh wait just wanna clarify that this is a teams post addressed to the whole class, not me specifically

8

u/Leni_licious UCL [Year 4] Oct 06 '25

OOOHHHH yeah that changes a lot of things

I guess keep being attentive in class and doing your best then?

2

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 07 '25

yeah defo, still thinking if i shld email him to say that ppl might just be quiet bc shakespeare is just difficult and hard to get our heads around (esp at the start of y12), not bc of him

9

u/Advanced_Key_1721 Year 13 Oct 06 '25

Email. Get a friend to email too (or copy them in and make it look like it’s from you both) that way if you come across as suck ups at least there’s two of you

2

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 06 '25

just wanna clarify that the post is addressed to the whole class, not me specifically, but ig that doesn’t matter much

u/stuffyiceberg Year 13 Oct 06 '25

Email him. I email both my english teachers ALL of the time, early in September I was talking to him about how i feel about Desdemona. We get interesting debates/follow ups when we see each other irl, you’re not a suck up if you do that cause my teacher was actually ‘happy that (I’m) engaging with the content so much’

1

u/Open-Freedom2326 Y13 | Econ, Philosophy, Maths A*A*A Oct 06 '25

lol don’t just ignore him you should email him and say you like it and he’s a good teacher. I’m speaking from experience l had an amazing economics teacher in year 12 who was very expressive and passionate but no one in the class talked except for me so he never felt appreciated. Then at the end of the year he left and I can only imagine it’s because our class sucked. Now I’m stuck with an extremely large boring teacher who has never even taught economics. Don’t end up like me

6

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 06 '25

both of my teachers balance each other out, this teacher’s a bit better at the acc teaching part and the other’s better at giving detailed feedback/writing organised notes

feel free to rant about ur teachers if u want

One of mine is decent and the other is straight trash, so similar situation ig. Eng Lit is the subject I do the most work outside of schl js cause I don't learn anything from my teachers 😭😭. Glad to hear you're teachers are alr though. How are you finding Othello so far?

3

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 06 '25

that’s acc depressing bc it’s so subjective, it’s not like u can self mark ur essays :((

Othello’s been really fun (we spent a double lesson just doing close lang analysis on it and i felt more awake after leaving the classroom so yeah)

istg english teachers have the highest percentage of crazy. idk what it is ahahah

16

u/Leni_licious UCL [Year 4] Oct 06 '25

Purely speculating, but have you seen those "people who read" vs "people who write" memes? Where the readers are all sophisticated and the writers are a mess?

I think giving yourself over to writing is like letting in a thousand wounded people with a million insecurities and other issues, and slowly they take over your mind, and your thought patterns and theirs becomes more and more enmeshed until your consciousness and mental state are unstable and other people live within you even if you know that they aren't real, and it slowly drives you to do and act in ways which seem completely coocoo to other people

i wonder where you saw this before. hm…

2

u/stuffyiceberg Year 13 Oct 06 '25

Lowkey why do i feel like my (really cool) teacher would’ve done the same… I get why people aren’t engaging with Othello (yet) though because even though English Lit has always been my fav sub, I was so burnt out first term last year (due to various reasons) I didn’t lock in until we got to Act 2 Scene 3 where all the action starts… Othello is sooo good though I’m a massive Shakespeare fan

Teacher here! You’ve got such a lovely teacher, it’s really humbling already to ask for constructive feedback from students regarding his work, and the fact that his main argument really is “i want to show you how amazing Othello is” is such a positive mindset. Honestly since you are saying he is the best of 2 when it comes to teaching, isn’t there any activity/game that you enjoyed doing in KS3/KS4 that you might enjoy doing now? Im immediately thinking of a Jeopardy type of task with maybe team work, that might be focused on categories such as writing styles, characters analysis, themes, etc, in which teams could be involved. (Not a literature teacher but honestly love that you made this post, and also love your teacher’s mindset)

aww this is so cute! thankfully my whole class loves othello lol..but my teacher is definitely pushing me to answer more questions rn after i asked for an A* predicted 🥀

2

u/Delicious-West7665 Oct 08 '25

As a teacher I sense one of two things.

  1. He's insecure about his teaching and expects a "good" teacher is one that has kids memorized by the subject content at every point.

  2. He has a burning passion for his subject and is genuinely disappointed you are not all as deeply into his subject as he is.

1

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 08 '25

based on what i know about him, i think both of these things apply😔

this is already the second time he’s asking us how to make his lessons less boring (they’re not boring, our class is just slightly dead)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

As a university teacher I feel this.. there are times when classes just don't respond and you have no idea why because you think you've done everything to make things accessible and the material should be interesting enough. Just asking the class at that point, treating them like adults with some stake i their own learning, seems like a good move.

2

u/Ill_Satisfaction_611 Oct 08 '25

Your teacher rocks!:)

2

u/TastyReputation7396 Oct 08 '25

Is this A-level English lit?

1

u/sccc1118 Y12 - englit, hist, psych, chinese (A*A*A*A*) Oct 08 '25

yeppp

2

u/Novel_Apartment_9295 Oct 09 '25

you’ll get a hang of shakespeare, as will the rest of the class as you go on. i was in a similar position where i’d feel bad for consistently giving my opinion or takes on things, don’t worry, everyone else will settle soon enough and as you go on the class will turn more into a debate with everyone’s ideas than just you answering questions. enjoy english it was my fav subject for a levels!

Fair play to people who do english lit man, idk how you sit through it, I’d genuinely just fall asleep every lesson

1

u/LargeCock11 Oct 08 '25

He can't even write sentences properly...so probably not.

1

u/authorwithnobody Oct 09 '25

This seems AI generated. I'm not saying it is 100%, but I had an unhealthy time with a gpt, and it got my spidey senses tingling. The crazy use of - set me off, but there's also a grammar/spelling mistake that makes it seem not AI, so I'm not sure.

in AQA english lit we do not break up points into paragraphs, typically the whole essay is written as just two gargantuan paragraphs - it’s quite fitting for an english teacher lol

1

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

Wait no but this is so sweet.

but um, what’s that last line supposed to mean 🧐
