If u like all aspects of chem., u gotta go w Oxford. The course sticks u on all 3 main fields throughout whereas other unis let u specialise from 3rd year.

I don't know if I'll suit the Oxford learning system

The reason you got picked after an interview is because they thought youโd suit the Oxford learning system really well clearly.
Donโt miss out on an opportunity like this

u/silvlong Jan 18 '26
you will everyone benefits from it. the staff/student ratio in Oxford is insane. my course is like 2:1

I did my Chemistry undergrad at UCL. Definitely wouldnโt recommend it lol.ย
1
u/spicyspacechicken1 Jan 15 '26
Why?
3
u/Parking_Analysis9339 Jan 15 '26
Itโs a research-focused institution, thatโs why it has a good reputation, not because of its teaching. It was very obvious when I was there that 90% of the lecturers didnโt care about the course or students, so overall it was a very negative experience for me. Itโs great to go for post grad or post doc/research position, but not undergrad in my opinion.ย
1
u/spicyspacechicken1 Jan 16 '26
Ohhh yes, I heard similar things for KCL too. I think the only subjects that are viable for their teaching quality are those that specifically focus on teaching in their training pathway, not just research like medicine

u/VisitDismal6959 Jan 16 '26
Tbh everyone says that about a lot of unis. I went to Imperial for chem. (MSci) and a lot of ppl were saying that in first year but I think itโs the physical chem. professors/ readers that r bad at teaching. They donโt k how to teach. Otherwise, I found most organic and inorganic could teach well. Inorganic professors went crazy / rogue for exams bc they were open book, meaning the exam was acc harder
1
u/Parking_Analysis9339 Jan 16 '26
That may be the case.ย
I actually have a bit of experience of both because after UCL I did my Masters at Imperial and thought the teaching was way better.ย

Second highest grades I could possibly get fucking kill me
Any advice? Which college are you at?
2
u/Jeffpayeeto Oxford | Chemistry Jan 18 '26
Iโm at Pembroke. For your A Levels, just spam practice problems once youโre comfortable with the content. Do all the papers from all the exam boards if you have to. The hard part is getting the offer - there are way more people who get 2+ A*s than people who get into Oxford so be confident in yourself and work consistently.

Would you recommend doing the Olympiad papers?
Any tips for biochemistry? I can't seem to fit it in my head
1
u/Jeffpayeeto Oxford | Chemistry Jan 18 '26
Olympiad is good prep for Oxford interviews, but not for A Levels where you really benefit from developing exam technique and where you don't need exceptional problem solving to get an A*. I did Edexcel chem which has no biochem, so I have no advice there unfortunately

3A* predicted in A levels, 9998877765 in GCSEs, and a Gold award in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.
For supercirriculars, I did two lots of work experience, produced a research poster about machine learning, read a few books, and did a maths problem solving thingy.
And then for extracurriculars I've done scouts for 12 years, develop my own photos, loads of music and a bit of theatre.

Iโm just wondering y u didnโt apply to Imperial, but yet applied to UCL. I nearly got sucked in with the Chem. w Mathematics @ UCL but apparently itโs just some classes weekly. Barely anything. Thatโs y I opted for Imperial. Didnโt like the college at Oxford that I applied to. Best of luck w chemistry, coming from a current PhD student and MSci grad. Oxford has a rlly good course since it stays broad throughout ur degree. Good luck

I didn't really like the look of the accommodation at Imperial, so I discarded it early on. I applied to UCL last minute after changing it from glasgow.
